Crackpot theory: Vasher is the Big Bad of the Voidlight Archive
Jult replied to Nitpicking's topic in Stormlight Archive
I maybe would have put this on the Cosmere board instead of the Stormlight board for.. reasons. I fully agree that Vasher will have a major role to play eventually. I expect that at some point in the Cosmere's future, nearly all of the original Vessels will be replaced with characters that we've watched ascend. And Vasher's been on my shortlist of potential Vessels for a while. I've never really considered him as a candidate for Retribution, but yeah he's definitely on the right planet and his personality is a pretty decent match for the Retribution. ^That's a bit more difficult for me to get on board with. I do have some theories about Autonomy messing with Roshar, but I don't think Autonomy is allied with any of the other Shards. -
Who in the Cosmere could be a Disney Princess?
Jult replied to pureintonation's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't think it has been 100% confirmed to be one. But it's implied pretty heavily and generally accepted as fact around here. -
I would love to. Sorry for the late response. It's been crazy couple of weeks. Copper is a bit blurry, but I believe it is: Reflexive Cover: Before a character uses an Invested ability that can be blocked by a coppercloud, spend 1 focus to burn Copper. Expanded Coppercloud: The maximum radius of your coppercloud increases by 5* your ranks in Allomancy Covert Coordination: Before an ally within your coppercloud makes a Stealth test or a test with raised stakes, spend 1 focus to grant them an advantage. Efficient Smoker: Your Burn Copper duration doubles, and you can change the size of your coppercloud as a free action.

Who in the Cosmere could be a Disney Princess?
Jult replied to pureintonation's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Oh wait this is funny but Lift: Magic hair - Uhh yeah why not. She could probably use either Progression or Abrasion on it I guess. Magic hands - For sure Talking animals - Her Aviar is a parrot.. So, yeah it talks a little. Poisoned - not that I recall Cursed - Her Nightwatcher boon should have a curse associated with it. Kidnapped or enslaved - Yep. Mraize and Raboniel both kept her in a cage. And used her as a Lifelight factory. Problems were solved because a big, strong man showed up - Barely... But, publicly, the story about her saving Gawx is that he saved himself and then told Nale to leave. So, that could count. Which puts Lift in the 6/7 group as well. -
Who in the Cosmere could be a Disney Princess?
Jult replied to pureintonation's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Tress is a good answer: Magic hair - Technically no, but her hair is a defining characteristic. Magic hands - Only if she's holding Aethers in them Talking animals - Yeah Poisoned - Yep. Chapter 8 Cursed - The Sorceress tried to at least.. Kidnapped or enslaved - Big yes. Problems were solved because a big, strong man showed up - Hoid Sarene should get an honorable mention too: Magic hair - Not at the moment, but she's Aonic.. So, she could become an Elantrian Magic hands - Same as hair. Talking animals - No, but where do Seons fall on that chart? Poisoned - Yeah Cursed - Only in appearance, but sort of. Kidnapped or enslaved - I'd say yeah. Problems were solved because a big, strong man showed up - Raoden Bonus - Is a literal princess. -
Shard-vehicles could be interesting. Probably nothing as complex as an automobile. But I could see Shardboats or Shardboards being manageable. If building-sized really is the limit, then you could get pretty creative. Spawn an entire wagon for some Shard-public-transit.

Yes!! My highlights: Kandra Ancestry, more Twinborn stuff, the Hemalurgical Chimeras that my brain refuses to remember, A-Copper (congrats to anyone who wants to compound Copper - you can start today).

Ooh I was just recently looking into something kind of related. I've been pondering Emotional abilities on Roshar. We don't see any from the Surges (besides some Connection shenanigans) but we do see the Thrill and the Revel from the Unmade. Plus, Odium himself does some manipulation here and there. IF (and it's a big "if") we assume that these abilities function in a similar way to Emotional Allomancy... Then I think you'll be interested in revisiting the chapters of Oathbringer where Dalinar attacks Rathalas. To summarize: He is clearly stated to be feeling the Thrill at the beginning of Chapter 75 while wearing his helmet. But he retains a good amount of self-control - to the point that he realizes he's been tricked and starts to order his men to retreat. At that exact moment of signaling his men, an explosion hits him so hard that his helmet shatters. Soon after he completely reds out... and when he recovers his senses, his Shardplate is so wrecked he doesn't even wear it for the rest of the assault on Rathalas... And well... we know what happened in Rathalas next. It's not ironclad proof. There were certainly other factors in play that would have amped him up. But it is interesting that his helmet shatters before he fully loses control. When I have time, I might flip through the books to try and find each POV experience with the Thrill and see who had their helmets on or not. More on-topic... If Nergaoul's influence could pierce Shardplate.. I'd imagine Rashek's could too. But Dalinar was a normal human wearing deadplate in the scene above. Living Plate may be a different story. And even just being Radiant could have some impact too.

I think the goal is to largely keep the movies and shows accurate to the books, so Apple won't have much power in forcing things in a new direction. The books are stuffed with cameos (whoever plays Hoid will be a busy man), but full team-ups haven't happened much at all yet. There are some almost Avenger-type Worldhopper groups forming such as (spoilers for... lots of books):

I believe Jasnah's stance would be to call the tyrant king a powerful dirtbag even if he is omnipotent and omniscient. She's antidogmatic. I think even if Adonalsium Himself returns and He turns out to be a perfect example of a benevolent God with full omniscience, omnipotence, and indisputable proof that he created the Cosmere and all things in it (which the Aethers dispute btw), Jasnah would still say "That's nice, but no one has any obligation to worship or serve you". It would undermine the universal freedoms that she values above all else to do otherwise. Relevant WoB: I agree she does need to grow. But I don't think abandoning her values would be growth. Her atheism, even with the existence of Adonalsium in the Cosmere, hasn't been shown to be flawed yet. And probably never will since Brandon has repeatedly said that he'll never definitively answer such questions (WoB). That being said, I don't think she needs to abandon her values to make an argument like the one you are describing. It shouldn't matter if she believes Taravangian is divine. What matters is that Taravangian sees himself as divine. She wouldn't have to have the same beliefs as him to convince him that he should practice what he preaches. This would be a good debate tactic. But it doesn't feel to me like one that Jasnah would want to use. Not sure how to put it into words... But it feels more like tricking Taravangian, so she gets what she wants on a technicality instead of a proper win.

I feel your GM's pain. The Injury system is very cool, but it does inherently lower the stakes in most fights. Which makes it difficult to make a fight feel threatening. I do think it ultimately makes for more interesting stories though because it challenges you to invent some other sources of tension. e.g. Hostage situations, figurative "time bombs", literal time bombs, racing to an object or destination, etc.

Possible improvements to Navani's flying fabrials.
Jult replied to Grubfriend's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There's so much room for improvement. It requires hundreds of laborers turning winches to move vertically and dozens of chulls to move laterally. At full speed, it goes about 5 knots (9.26km/h or 5.75mph). It also takes hundreds of infused gems to power. Certainly, Navani's discovery of using Raysium to transfer conjoined spren into different sized gemstones will cut down on the amount of labor required to get the ship moving and increase its speed. Though, I think, to save on Stormlight, I'd probably scrap a good chunk of the design related to lateral movement and build something more similar to Rysn's freechair. Keep the winch system (but enhanced with different sized gemstones) for vertical movement because that's the part that kind of requires magic to work. And find a new way to "push" the ship around laterally without consuming Stormlight. Some of Navani's earlier sketches had sails and by RoW they had added fans (though they were barely functioning)... That's a good step in this direction. Or just get your hands on some Aether spores, but that doesn't feel super possible for present-day Roshar. As for communication... The gems discovered in the Urithiru gem archive already introduced something similar to Morse code, so they do have a blueprint for that. But I also think that Navani's work with tones and vibrations in RoW was already inching towards some kind of walkie-talkie fabrial. Some kind of paired conjoiner fabrials that pass along vibrations to produce tones. -
knights radiant The structure behind Radiant Ideals (and filling in the gaps)
Jult replied to PanLin's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Minor point: Brandon has said this is possible. But probably not something he'd ever do in the books: Which may be even more in your favor. I don't think Brandon would have said he'd never include it if it is what the Unmade are doing. Though I'm not certain that Panlin was implying the Unmade were bonded to anything. One of us! One of us! -
When Swearing Oaths... WaT spoilers

Got one more. When Elhokar starts to swear his first ideal, he also starts to glow. And Moash has to put in a good bit of extra effort to get all the Stormlight out of him. I don't think we see him breath in any Stormlight prior, but I only skimmed the chapter. So, he maybe made a connection to the SR. That's probably what's happening on that page. The referenced chapter does mention the light from when Szeth swears his 5th ideal. I think whoever wrote the Coppermind entry assumed that the intensity of the light was correlated to the level of the ideal. It's not the wildest leap in logic... But probably shouldn't have made it to the Coppermind without confirmation - especially written in such a matter-of-fact way. -
When Swearing Oaths... WaT spoilers
Jult replied to Through The Living Star's topic in Stormlight Archive
Just checked. Unclear for Venli - the scene immediately cuts away as she says "Journey before Destination" (OB 120). And even less clear for Rlain. He spoke the words "offscreen". Tumi appears to him in RoW 111 and then in RoW 114 they're already bonded. So, we didn't see them spawn mini perpendicularities. But we also didn't see them not spawn mini perpendicularities. I tried to look into a few other scenes where I could remember oaths being sworn. And they were all pretty unhelpful in both directions. Lift speaks her 3rd oath in Edgedancer but it's noted that she embraced the ideal "in her heart" long before that (and we do see her wielding Wyndle as a weapon before she says it aloud). Plus, Lift isn't exactly a standard example of a Radiant. I re-read Szeths earlier oaths too and they're like weirdly underwhelming in hindsight. Stormfather isn't even the one to accept them - his Skybreaker mentors do. But also you're right: not a mini-perp in sight. That'd be a better explanation, but when Nale, Syl, Kaladin, and Szeth discuss it in WaT 129, they seem to think Szeth's 4th ideal would have been enough. There's a line on the Coppermind that says: But I'm not sure where the "proportional to what numbered Ideal" bit comes from. I checked the referenced chapter (WaT 134) and don't see that stated anywhere (I could have missed it though). It feels like a bit of a retcon to be honest. Although maybe we just don't have enough information? -
Neat! Thanks for this. Seems I should have been more confident about "Leveraging Brace".

I'm pretty amused to see how many people clicked this out of hope that it was true instead of fear. I'm also in that camp for a lot of the same reasons people have already said. I hate adaptations. I've never seen an adaptation be better than the source material. If Cosmere movies and TV shows have to happen (and I wish they didn't), then I'd prefer that they'd be new stories instead of re-imagined versions of existing ones. At least that way they'd contribute to reaching the end of Brandon's vision for the Cosmere instead of delaying us getting there.

When Swearing Oaths... WaT spoilers
Jult replied to Through The Living Star's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yes. He did indeed. You may not remember because the chapter ends and cuts away quite frustratingly when it happens. So, it would seem it is not unique to Windrunners. There's a conversation in WaT 129 where Syl says it applies to all Radiants: -
I think the target substance does matter. But agree to disagree. I already feel like I've pulled us too far from the original topic. I wouldn't say it's only a game mechanic. Radiants connect directly to the SR when they speak an ideal and get a huge temporary boost of Investiture as a result. That's what the empowered status represents. Ahhh... It's always the Ars Arcanums that get me.. I've got to re-read those more often. Thank you, friend. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I think PanLin's main ideas could work and are similar to what I've been hoping Voidbinding would turn out to be (which may make me a bit biased towards wanting them to be right). Even if we want to ignore RPG evidence, I still argue that it's possible Renarin's lightweaving shortcomings could be more of a personal skill issue than a universal law of how Enlightenment works. If that's true, then we can think of Enlightenment as being additive instead of transformative (with regard to Surges). Which eliminates any wrenches that Mraize's lightweaving may throw into Panlin's theories.

They usually include GM notes whenever they do something like this though. They're quite good at acknowledging when they blur the lines on canon info. For example, Skybreakers waiting until the 3rd ideal to use Division is mentioned in the rulebook: They just don't force that restriction on players because non-Nale-following Skybreakers exist. 100% agree that the books trump the RPG. But the books only say that Renarin can't Lightweave normally. I think most of this fandom has assumed that means no Enlightened Truthwatcher can. And, while that may turn out to be correct, I don't think it's a completely safe assumption - especially since the RPG seems to contradict it. Renarin may just be bad at it or maybe there's some trick to using Illumination as a Truthwatcher that the Lightweavers can't teach him. Most of these are tweaks to make combat more fair in-game. They aren't as dramatic as granting access to an entire Surge tree that a character normally wouldn't be able to have. I'm not even sure I'd call them all inaccuracies. I could see it being more difficult to convince an object to become fire than anything else - Shallan certainly had a rough time trying to convince Stick to be fire. And I can't recall many scenes in the books where 4th-ideal Radiants dealt with suppressor fabrials - I can only think of Kaladin doing it at the end of RoW, but that was immediately after swearing an ideal so he would have been more empowered than normal. And I'm not sure what you're referring to with the stone vs living things comment - I think in both sources Soulcasting living things is harder.

From the RPG's Stormlight Handbook: Being "nearly incorporeal" would probably make them a bad choice for slinger ammo. They can travel through stone surfaces, but I don't think they teleport from stone to stone. I picture something similar to how the Deepest Ones move. No. They can't communicate by thought until the 3rd ideal. You have to speak aloud to them and be within a normal hearing distance for them to hear you until then. Also, unlike most spren, they are audible to anyone nearby when they speak. They don't have the ability to obscure themselves from others like most Radiant spren (though they are very good at camouflaging themselves in stone).

My game got cancelled this week, so at least I have your summaries to feed my addiction! Are you leaning towards any Radiant Paths for Teeth? Or is he a Warrior through and through?

The Stormlight Handbook for the RPG does contain rules for bonding Enlightened Spren. It's limited to Mistspren only - probably to avoid spoilers and conflicts with canon, but it's notable to mention that bonding an Enlightened Mistspren in the game gives you access to all 3 of the normal Truthwacher Talent trees (Mistspren Bond, Progression, and Illumination) as well as a special 4th tree for Enlightened Talents. I think it's important to highlight that this 4th Talent tree (which contains Talents related to seeing the Future and Past) does not replace any of the other Trees. It only grants additional Talent options. Until the books say otherwise, it's the closest thing to a canon answer on Enlightened Spren that we have. So, my current opinion is that Renarin could do normal Lightweaving; it just hasn't clicked for him yet. Him not being able to do it doesn't automatically mean that no Enlightened Truthwatcher could. I love the direction you're going in, and nothing is jumping out at me as a contradiction. I'm not sure where in your table it would go, but since we're diving into Cognitive and Spiritual variations on Surges... One "gap" in the Surge system that has always irked me is that there doesn't seem to be anything in the Surges analogous to Emotional Allomancy. I don't expect a one-to-one mapping of abilities between the different power systems, but I do subscribe to the idea that there is an underlying unified magic system that all of the others are based on. And it really bugs me that there are no Emotional powers - something that we know exists in the Cosmere - on the planet that ODIUM is Invested in. It's been a hope of mine for a while now that Voidbinding would fill this hole. Especially since we've seen some of the Unmade doing it already (Ashertman and Nergaoul mostly).

Spoilers Requested: Taln and his Honorblade
Jult replied to DoctaDajman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Adding to Treamayne's cliff notes to expand on the RPG stuff. But PLEASE don't look if you plan on playing Stonewalkers. There are a couple big spoilers in it. Also, you will get to actively witness the blade being stolen enroute to the Shattered Plains in the RPG -
A very good point. I definitely agree that it wouldn't happen overnight unless some kind of Shardic intervention was involved. So then do you think the subastral could have been something other than mists pre-Rashek? Or was the deepness important enough to still be the default in this ancient version of Scadrial? I did think of metals and almost used them in my previous example instead of electricity. I agree that they'd make more sense. Could it just be that there are so many varieties and uses for metals that there isn't a very consistent cognitive image that springs to mind at the word? If I say "mists" most Scadrians are going to picture something similar, but if I say "metal", there'd probably be a wide variety of mental pictures going around. This whole idea originally occurred to me when I was poking around the Coppermind and saw this highlighted bit: It got me thinking about potential advantages/disadvantages of having navigable terrain within your local subastral. Particularly ones related to the Rosharan-Scadrian conflict that's going on in the background of the SP novels. I also danced around this as a possibility for how Autonomy may have limited the accessibility of Taldain, but that's probably not the case. She probably just did something to block off her perpendicularity.
