Map including the Free Kingdoms
discipleofhoid replied to discipleofhoid's topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
Referring to Mokia in book 4 Grandpa Smedry says ‘Thank you! All right, let’s get moving! We have an entire continent to save!’ - This would lead me to think that Mokia is indeed a continent. Also if the Hawaiian islands are north of Mokia and Tonga/Samoa are south that would make it roughly the size of Australia. Nalhalla could still be quite large if it sat sideways in the North Pacific -
Map including the Free Kingdoms
discipleofhoid posted a topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
Does anyone know of a map of earth including the free kingdoms? My kids have convinced me to GM an Alcatraz RPG for them and I am trying to figure out the relative locations of the continents. Short of a map can we logic out where they should be? I know the map Alcatraz sees in book 1 has one large continent in the pacific and then two other continents whose location is not specified. Also if I remember right the pacific islands are refereed to as outlying Mokian territories. According to the coppermind one of the continents seems to be Nalhalla while the second is Mokia. From the culture of Mokia I would expect it to be in the Pacific Ocean. Does that mean it is the large continent or are there two there? From the culture of Nalhalla I would expect it to be near the UK although given the prevalence of English in the world I am less sure of that one. Book two mentions the Kalmarian Wilds in connection with jungles. That could possibly be the third continent if so it is in a tropical location and near the world spire as well. -

Neither link is working for me? They go to 17th shard 404 pages.

Ok so this may be a bit out there but pulling apart the sounds in the words nonsense, balderdash and Figgldygrak and stitching them back together I get: "Sh aw r d b l (long A) d s g i f n g R a y s K n o w l e d g " This is phoneticly close to: Shardblades giving Rayse knowledge What you guys think? Could this be the hidden message?

I hope it is a scene like this: Kaladin doing that would be awesome. -
Why do I get the feeling Jasnah is going to die?
discipleofhoid replied to The Count's topic in Stormlight Archive
Given Jasnah's comment And with Dalinar's visions giving a possible way to translate the Dawnchant it would not surprise me if she found studying Dalinar's visions to be more important. -
I would suspect that where most names are being represented in English with the letters that come closest to the pronunciation where Wit is a concept or title more than a name. Thus rather then giving us the rosharian word that means Wit we just get the concept in English.

And to be fair - I wouldn't want someone to just give me the code, that would ruin the fun of it for me - more I would want additional hints from those who had solved a code I was stuck on or a place to bounce ideas about what a hint Brandon has given might mean. I am in Idaho so I can almost guarantee none of the bookstore codes will be near me. So I guess now that I have thought it through I don't really have my original question.
-
Sounds good - I will wait (im)patiently for further news.

The rules for the Steelhunt say that we cannot post codes online in an open way but that posting to private forums is ok. So a few questions: Is 17th Shard a private forum - no password is required to read posts so I would lean towards no but maybe? If 17th shard is not a private forum could we get a topic that is members only set up that would count as a private forum for collaboration on this. If no to the first two questions does any one have any other ideas on how to collaborate on this?

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
discipleofhoid replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think we came up with that partially from what Brandon signed in my Alloy of Law - along with his comment that it would not make any sense for around 10 books. This combined with the promise of FTL in the 3rd mistborn series lines up about right for what he was saying. There may have been other hints in this direction too but that is the one I know of off the top of my head. -
I had always(well since we found out that the Elantrian shard was devotion) assumed that the reason that it was the second generation that could become Elantrians was because they were the first ones that were truly devoted to the land represented in the Aons. Having been born and raised there they saw Arelon not just as home but as their land.

It makes sense is you agree that surgebinding is Honors magic system. From that perspective all of the traits that attract spren of any kind could be considered honorable. It is not that they are acting such to attract a Syl type spren as that all spren that bind with knights radiant are hounorspren.

The Emperor's Soul *Elantris Spoilers*
discipleofhoid replied to Windrunner's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Given. I was more concerned that I had been negligent in my Brandon stalking missed the release of new Brandon material to read. If it was a reading at LUTE then I can impatiently wait for it to be released. -
I would agree with this statement but type III entities are definitively end positive and I can't find any way to define Nightblood as end positive. So either something big is going on behind the scene(almost for sure) or the magic system needs split to classify it. How are others reconciling Nightblood with end neutral or end positive theories?
-
I don't know if szeth is that compelling but the shin backstory is sure to contain a lot of interesting tidbits
-
This depend what you mean by Awakening. If you mean Type III Biochromatic Manifestations that appears to be end positive. If you mean magic on Nalthis then it would be all three which isn't an option on the poll. Type I entities(Returned) could be any of the three(but are probably end negative.) Type II entities(Lifeless) are either end positive or end neutral. Type III entities(Standard Awakening) can be argued to be end neutral but I would say that they are end-positive Type IV entities(nightblood) are most likely end-negative.

The Emperor's Soul *Elantris Spoilers*
discipleofhoid replied to Windrunner's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Ok so the coppermind says "Hoid appears in the sample chapter." Was this the chapter Brandon read at one of his events? Or is there a sample chapter of this I just can't find? -
Dragonsteel not in the Cosmere?
discipleofhoid replied to discipleofhoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Ok, never mind then. Move along folks nothing to see here. -
Was looking at a quote Zas just posted in another topic and I saw this gem. Opinions? Did Brandon mean a different world here or did the shattering of adonalsium create a new universe/ warp the people present to a different one? Or does shadesmar link different universes?

Gavilar killed so Dalinar would succeed?
discipleofhoid replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
Going off this has Brandon ever said if Odium was one of the three referenced in that quote? Or is that just the common assumption. -
Gavilar killed so Dalinar would succeed?
discipleofhoid replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thinking about this several quotes come to mind. One from Honor, and some from Navani and Dalinar's conversations. Gavilar was definitely not the same type of man that Dalinar is and I would argue about them even being that similar. They both may have followed the Way of Kings but they were very different people before coming to the book and so are going to learn from it different. As noted by Honor cultivation is more skilled at looking into the future. She might have seen some character flaw in Gavilar that would have doomed them all. Or maybe the war with the Parshendi was necessary. We really have to little to go on to be sure. But I really don't think that we can discount this theory on the grounds that Gavilar and Dalinar were to similar.
