Well let's look at the basic case - with the basic case of Awakening you have to have breath, color, a command and you have to visualize the effect of the command. More breath makes it easier but does not change the effect. Amount of color does not seem to be a factor in how well the command works either. So that leaves the command and the visualization. The command must be verbalized for the lower heightenings but in the upper heightenings can be given mentally. This makes me think that this is a cognitive filter for the power. Metal and shapes are physical patterns that shape the power, the commands are a cognitive pattern that filter the power. I would guess that at the lower heightenings the verbal Command is necessary to form a firm enough pattern on the cognitive realm to filter the power. Notice that at the lower heightenings you must be touching objects to Awaken them - similarly to soulcasting which is also a cognitive realm task.

This sounds good to me - when Syl first started she wasn't much different from a windspren. As her bond with Kalidin grows she seems to be more and more grounded in the physical realm.

Or it could be that in elantris time you wouldn't want to but they fixed it pre-WoK times -
Theory: Hemalurgy can transfer any Investiture
discipleofhoid replied to discipleofhoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Another thought here - we were discussing what could weaken the bonds between realms to allow hemalurgy without killing. Extreme emotion seems to have realmatic effects that could be construded as a weakening of the bond between the spiritual and other realms(allomancers/ruin controlling koloss) could this be the key? -
I am leaning away from it being Hoid for 1 reason. Brandon told us to look at the note on the AofL map. That note makes it sound like a group is gathering the information and then 1 person is compiling the information into the AA. This does not fit Hoid's MO. From what we know of the seventeenth shard(a group with enough resources to send 3 pepole after Hoid on a planet other then their own.) It sounds more like something they would do. I would guess that we have not met the author of the AA yet. Although that would make a good question to ask Brandon.

You mean like in a cave beneath his palace that is only accessible through the most guarded room of the palace and then only by an allomancer burning duralumin?

Theory: Shadesmar Map is Complete
discipleofhoid replied to discipleofhoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I still don't think that the Roshar shape is a coincidence(see my explanation above.) However my theory for Sel would be that the sun Shallan sees in the distance is the Dor and it is located in the Shadesmar location corresponding to Sel. I also wonder is this is what the broken sky could refer to. -
Theory: Shadesmar Map is Complete
discipleofhoid replied to discipleofhoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So from what I understand, the reasoning for the seas being other planets is that shadesmar, as the cognitive realm shouldn't really reflect the physical realm. i.e it shouldn't have a set shape. The other reason that is given is that this is an in world representation and could be wrong due to in world bias. These are reasonable assumptions - However given the other evidence we have I don't think this could be the case. Here is my reasoning: 1. Shadesmar can be used not only to move from planet to planet as well as to discrete locations on a planets surface. We have 1 confirmed case of this and some other possibilities. Speaking of Hoid Brandon said: This is the confirmed case. Others would include the Traveling power mentioned in the Jasnah Chapter headers. 2.Shadesmar, by its very nature reflects the shape of the physical world. Bold statement no? Stay with me for a moment and you will see why I think this. So what are the beads in the sea? They are the cognitive aspects of everything in the Physical realm. Shallan talks to the cognitive aspect of the goblet which she was touching before the change and had in her hand after the change. Is would be reasonable to assume then that the sea of cognitive though would follow the shape of the land that the physical aspects are part of/ are on. 3.This map was created during the Silver Kingdoms - at the height of the Knights Radiant power. An overlay of this map with the other maps in the way of kings shows that it matches the map of the silver kingdoms but that there have been land-form changes since then that are on the current Roshar map but not reflected in the Shadesmar map. The Knights Radiant used Shadesmar at least for their transformation powers and I suspect also for their travel powers. They also managed to map Shadesmar enough to note that you could get to other planets from Shadesmar. Knowing this it does not seem reasonable to me that they would include 2 other planets access points in the shape of the Roshar continent on their map. 4.Most of all the Shadesmar Shallan visited had some shape. There were flames and glass beads and a distant sun. This is not a shapeless "thought realm". It is more malleable then the physical realm but not shapeless. -

So why are the seas shaped like roshar then? Coincidence? -

Theory: Shadesmar Map is Complete

That is close to what I was trying to say. This is the map of Shadesmar in Roshar - The areas where the other planets would be/connect are shown as the Expanses and Nexuses. I don't think the Seas are other planets because they actually form the shape of Roshar which makes no sense if they are other planets. That at least one of the expanses is another planet is confirmed. I don't think it to much of a stretch to expand that to all of the expanses. The nexuses is a little more of a stretch. Do you think it is too much of a stretch? -
Following up on wispy's response - Brandon is a skilled enough writer to vary his writing style intentionally. He also has a firm enough writing style that unless he was intentionally varying his writing style for these parts it would all be in Brandon's typical style. They are not. Therefore the variation of writing style is considered a clue to the nature of the in-world authorship of the Ars Arcanum.

What is the time difference between Warbreaker and Mistborn 1 could it be a style change in the one persons writing over those years? Note: Personally I lean towards the many writers one compiler idea myself but I think this needs considered.

Unless he had the mass of a small planet or moon then he would fall faster! - Ok so now I'm being silly. But the thought of an allomancer with the mass of a planet if intriguing.

Theory: Shadesmar Map is Complete
discipleofhoid replied to discipleofhoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Maybe I worded it wrong in the theory - This is a map of the shadesmar focusing on roshar - with the other locations accessible via shadesmar shown. I would guess that Expanse of the vapors looks like an inverted what ever planet it is etc. So saying it is complete is probably a little off. It contains references to all shadesmar locations would be better. -
Theory: Shadesmar Map is Complete

It is like the maps of europe from the 1400's where europe is huge and the other lands are small notes in the margin -
I guess if you go for future view that could be true. But the tone in the essay seems to be a current person looking at the situation not someone looking back.
-
Part of that could be due to the incredible mass that Wax had at the time. He had added enough to make the floor of an old and well built mansion collapse under him.

Note: This theory may change significantly as I am still unsure about it. Theory Statement: The entire Cosmere is represented in the map of Shadesmar in the Way of Kings. Reasoning behind theory: These two quotes from the recent signings got me to examining the map of shadesmar. If we combine these two and assume that all of the Expanses are worlds we have 3 worlds Expanse of the Densities Expanse of the Broken Sky Expanse of the Vapors I then took it a step further and assumed the nexuses were also worlds. There are 3 of these as well. Nexus of Transition Nexus of Imagination Nexus of Truth With Roshar we have 7 Planets. This all solidified when I read this post and realized that we currently know of 7 planned Shardworlds. I think Brandon may have finally nailed down how many planets he wanted. For shards this would make 2 shards on Scandrial 1 on Nalthis 3 on Roshar 2 on Sel 1 on Silence Divine Planet 2 on Taldain 5 on Yolen Let me know what you guys think. Then we can start figuring out which name refers to which planet.
-
At this last signing Brandon said it was either hoid or a member of the 17th shard. Let me dig up the quote. Edit: It was in today's twitter thing no wonder it took me so long to find. My vote is that Chaos is the author - Given the Authors views on hemalurgy and Chaos' perchance for Spiking pepole it becomes rather obvious I think
-
Correct my math if I am wrong guys but: The edition number is: x 15 y 6 16 10 So with the number system as I understand it we should have y = 256 x =4096 This would make the edition number 4096 + 15 * 256 + 6 * 16 + 10 = 8042
-
Could all of the nexus/expanses be the other cosmere planets? That would make for 7 planets. We have 2 shards on Scandrial 1 on Nalthis 3 on Roshar 2 on Sel 1 on Silence Divine Planet ? on Taldain ? on ? Planet This would make for 3 shard at least on the final two planets which seems like a lot. I dont know though because this would make it so the dragonsteel book is not accessable via shadesmar.

Link to the spreadsheet someone did for the timeline thread on timewasters. One thing I was noticing is that Gavilar found the Parshindi a year and five months before he died. This coincides with the time frame in which Szeth becomes Truthless. Coincidence?

Well they would be giving away most if not all of their connection to their god who is a shard of adonalsium. Thus they lose most of their connection to the powers of creation. I could see that being harmful. They can't return so that would be detrimental as well. We know they get sick easier and are more depressed. There are several negatives to being a Drab just from what we can see already. I suspect that their is something else we don't know yet as well. I think this theory works with that though. Another thing to remember is that even sentience comes from the connection to a shard. So they would still have a tiny connection but I think you are right about it being a sacrifice to give up your breath.

Good Catch! and the bullet shot within a time bubble that was dropped before it hit the edge did not slow down - by the same reasoning. So what is happening to that energy and how can this be used for FTL
