You could probably replace the names you listed with orders of KR and the whole quote would still work.

“I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right.”
Leuthie replied to Mikanium's topic in Stormlight Archive
"Is it morally objectionable to kill anyone unless all other options have been explored?" Yes "Will you turn the train to kill 1 or not turn it to kill 5?" Turn in. "But you said it was morally objectionable to kill someone!?" Ummm...you gave me no other options, so all options had been explored. As such, I was morally consistent in killing the one to save the five. Dumb chull. Oh, and no, the happiness of the majority isn't my concern in these matters; rather, the continued opportunity at life. So my other answer you're confused about is consistent, as well. As for torture: I find no moral objection in tickle torturing my wife until she passes out if she won't give me the damnation XBox One controller, so no, torture isn't always morally objectionable. “I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right.”

Syl isn't a full being. She's the personification of an ideal; the cognitive shadow of a set of standards and actions that only has agency in the Cognitive realm unless bound to a true physical entity. Her thoughts on the matter are built from two things: the ideals that make up her existence, and what Kaladin brings to the table. When Kal argues with Syl, he's arguing with himself + honor. Syl can't have a clear answer for complicated moral questions that Kaladin doesn't already have himself. And Syl is selfish. She only wants honorable actions in line with her existence. She requires it. So, no: the arguments between Kal and Syl will never be fulfilling. -
In the case of the chasm, he's conflicted. He hasn't made a solid decision and put a true plan of action in place. Syl loses the bond when Kaladin actually takes action toward assassinating the king he's supposed to be protecting.

Anybody else think Sadeas was a bit... strange?
Leuthie replied to Zerovirus's topic in Stormlight Archive
Sadeas seemed consistent with all other Highprinces. We only knew Sadeas mind once we got PoV chapters post betrayal. Of course his personality seemed to change. Usually does when you're given the whole of the story. -
Considering Hoid can heal damage to his soul, and we know not the mechanics of such a thing, I'm not going to assume either way. It's completely possible that Hoid could be forbidden from hurting people.

There are KR spren who would definitely bond with Adolin BECAUSE of what he did. I also don't see it as a revenge killing. If Sadeas wasn't planning to continue to backstab his father, Adolin would not have killed Sadeas. Adolin killed him because he wasn't going to stop being a direct threat to everything Kholin. The *snapped* comment might actually have been because of a developing spren bond. *Something snapped*...on Roshar, the "something" is always caused by spren.

The Desolations ended when the Heralds walked away. The vision of Nohadon was in the aftermath of a Desolation. Jezrien would have returned to That Place at that time. Similar characters only. Young, regal kings with short beards aren't an uncommon trope, and when myths stand before you, it wouldn't be all that strange for them to be inspiration for fashion and bearing. Nohadon looks like Jezrien because why the hell not?

I'm guessing it would be easier to figure out how to enter the Spiritual Realm physically and steal the part of the power you need there.

The Passions related to the Thrill?
Leuthie replied to Lopen Skybreaker's topic in Stormlight Archive
Its possible that Odiums minions have been playing with the minds of Alethi and other peoples of Roshar for millenia. All of the cultures are pretty messed up. The Passions could be a whole set of Thrill like effects that Team Odium uses to establish a cultural Hate foothold. -
Some thoughts on Shardplate *Some spoilers I guess*
Leuthie replied to Zhalfirin's topic in Stormlight Archive
Spren are behind greatshell and chasmfiend size. Spren and gemhearts. WoB states that gemhearts grow using similar mechanics as atium in the Pits in Mistborn. Being that it would fit with intent, its possible that the body of Cultivation serves as a conduit for greatshell growth. My theory concerning shardplate is an outgrowth of that. Namely, shardplate is Cultivations contribution to the fight, either willingly or by enterprising spren or Surgebinders. They work on similar principles to greatshells: spren bond powered by gems. At one time, these gems were replenished by Cultivation herself, allow for easy destruction and regrowth (serving to dismiss and recall the helmets, for example). Currently, the gems must be replenished as any other gem. Changes in the spren bond similar to shardblade could also diminish old capabilities.- 30 replies

Terry Prachett. Read them.

The gemheart and the spren bond exist side by side to power the magic needed to allow great shells and Chasmfiends to attain and function with such great size carapaces.
-
Does make more sense that Cultivation wouldn't want her creations relying on a construct of Honor when she can feed them directly
-
They require a spren to attain and function at their larger sizes. Spren require a bond and Stormlight to operate in the physical. The gemhearts store Stormlight given off in Highstorms. As for Larkin's...I have a feeling the Stormlight they ingest is lost/does nothing.

Considering Stormfather says "ODIUM REIGNS" to Kaladin in response to his question "why do we fight?"...I'd say Broken One refers to Odium. Why he's called Broken One is a good question.

Spren are so different from each other, it's no surprise that their interactions with humans are also very different. Thinking about what an Elsecaller can do, how else would such a spren make first contact? Pattern hung out in drawings and asked for truths. He's drawn to art/lies and truths. Ivory is transformation and transportation. Playing around with her shadow and pulling her into Shadesmar is the only interaction he's capable of until the bond forms. Would he have killed her? Depends. Did he know she might have died?

That ones a bit ambiguous. Could be the Alethi coming for the Parshendi (breaking the land through ecological disaster of depopulating Chasmfiends) or the new Parshendi forms, or an antagonist we don't know about yet.

I like equating excessive Stormlight use with being a Savant in Mistborn. The magic starts to take over with increased use, usurping your Spiritual and Cognitive aspects. I can't equate Szeth and Nalan. Szeth exuded emotion when on screen. He often detached when killing, but that's not being emotionless; that's simply a technique for getting through trauma. Nalan's lack of emotion might be related, but he has much more emotion 6 years prior at Galivars death when Jasnah sees him walking down a hallway. In the proceeding 6 years he's been hurried trying to protect the world and has changed himself through that work. A Stormlight/ Justice spren Savant, if you will.

Spren are intelligent in the Cognitive Realm pre-bond. In the Physical, they're shadows, unable to interact, much less think. Human bonds give them full access to this Realm. What that tells me is that some spren might take such a thing too far and attempt to completely usurp the bondmate's cognitive self entirely. This may be an answer to why Nalan is an emotionless justice machine. Imagine a spren in a man-suit...

There is something nefarious going on in the bond. Its symbiotic, to a point. Spren have an agenda and that agenda may not be in line with those they bond with. The like on the back of WoR strongly implies that there will be conflict involved with spren widening the cracks that they fill in. Hell, we already see that in Shallan's story; pretty strongly even. Pattern is a big part of why Shallans family destroyed itself, and its quite possible the possibility of this destruction was part of the reason Sallan was chosen. There's also a reason the KR broke all their bonds at once and walked away. Tip the symbiosis scale too far and the weaker side might look for a way out...

That could be Eshonai while transforming into storm form. Killing will be her life, her new strength betrays her, and she can no longer wander and explore as she had wished to do.
-
Sounds like the advice is to keep the secret of how to destroy the KR secret until the new Orders are formed. They may need to be destroyed. The may also implied that they may not.

Seems to me that Cultivation's spren, of which we've seen two: Pattern and Wyndle, are actively seeking bonds and using predictive ability to do so. Since tgey have a living Matron, they may be able to plan and think in the Cognitive realm better than the only real Honor spren weve seen. Shallan had artistic ability early and a stressful family. Pattern saw both and slipped into the crack in her Cognitive self. He increased her creativity and nudged existing family stress further along to form more cracks for him to fit into, culminating in the death of her mother. In short, Pattern found an opening in a child and exploited it.

Two questions- one about Jasnah, one about the Oathpact.
Leuthie replied to Zerovirus's topic in Stormlight Archive
My thought is that Radiants were chosen for each Desolation. They don't have a higher tech level or fabrials. They have shardplate and shardblades. They are stone age humans taught bronze by Heralds and given abilities, armor and weapons by spren. And Wonkavators it seems. Desolations reduce them all to the stone age again, the Heralds disappear. By the time tech increases again, a new Desolation squashes it.
