I'm certain he had the Cosmere in place prior to writing Elantris. There are a lot of spoilers to the greater story in Dragonsteel. Although there is always room to change it for published works.

It seems like Shardblades work in reverse to spren. When they aren't bound to a person, they are just swords. Someone picks one up, there's and flash in the gem, and the sword becomes a phantom that disappears when the holder drops it.

Not true. Metal is metal.

Syl can effect the Physical Realm through her bond with Kaladin.

It does make sense that the dying would leave the Physical first, allowing them to see the Cognitive. Especially on Roshar, where the barrier between Physical and Cognitive seems to be very thin and have lots of holes.

Above silence the illuminating storms dying storm's illumination the silence above. A ketek made up of part titles. Seems to put together storms with the death of Honor. Above silence: windrunners Illuminating storms: second order Dying: third order Storm's illumination: second order The silence above: windrunners Symmetrical, and the words are probably directly tied to the order symbol. Pretty sure this has already been posted somewhere.

Cryptics can't be "seen" in the Physical. Shallan doesnt see them. She draws them. All spren "live in the Cognitive". Seeing is a Cognitive activity. So is the way Shallan draws. Spren don't exist is the Physical without help. They are simply perceived. Any interaction is through bonds. So if a spren is bonded to a gem which allows bonds to an owner...you have a Shardblade that is a spren

It could also mean that Shard/Splinter/Adonalsium are just bundles of useless energy/stuff without a sentient entity to guide it.

But you're right, we don't have enough examples or WoB to come to any conclusions about Splinters.

Thing about Odium's Intent is that you can find it everywhere there is conflict. And the statement Hrathen made is as true on our world as on his. Whether that quote was a nod by Brandon to the greater Cosmere story or just an interesting coincidence is a question for him. In any case, I'm sure the changes made by Odium to Sel to cause the Splintering of Devotion and Dominion still linger. I'm also pretty sure he has no current active influence; a little busy on Roshar.

Sorry. Phrased the answer wrong. If it isn't sentient, it doesn't have a Splinter.

While Odium might have over-Invested himself to get rid of Honor and Cultivation, I seriously doubt there are any Splinters of him hanging about. One requirement to speculate on Splinters that I stick to: Is it sentient? If it's not sentient, it's not a Splinter. Completely forgot about the gem. That does tie it to the Physical. It also makes Shardblades a bit too much like Lightsabers.

In other words, both Shards' Intents could have been fulfilled with no fighting had Cultivation and Ruin ended up on the same planet.

They don't have a nice physical presence. They pass through everything that isn't their bonded holder. Much like...spren. The fact that they leave the things they pass through changed (rocks sliced, living things "detached" from limbs, etc) can and has been explained through non-Physical Realmic means. Their Physical presence is...incomplete. Like bonded spren.

(Theory) "The Most Important Words A Man Can Say"
Leuthie replied to Colateralwar's topic in Stormlight Archive
I get the impression that Parshendi are caught between humans and whatever humans are fighting. So much between that they end up as pawns on both sides. From recent WoR readings, Its quite possible that this little ability is used by both sides. Jasnah is only half right at the end of WoK. -
Voidish might actually refer to spren.
-
Hence all the maybes and possiblys in my post. My guess is that the "binding" of Dawnshards is at least slightly related to the process behind what happened in that reading: touch to change the spren, spren binds to rock to become Thunderclast. Total speculation. And yes, you can fight a huge animated piece of rock with hammers. You can technically take out a tank with pistols, but most troops would prefer something better. I'm guessing they want hammers because spears and blades are completely useless, not because the hammers are sufficient.

Anyone notice that Syl is holding a "radiant" sword while driving off the deathspren from Kaladin while he's fighting for life after the Highstorms?

5th heightening does result in agelessness. Each Breath gives you more resistance to disease and toxins and slows your aging. At 5th, this effect reaches a maximum. Full resistance and no aging. Being able to control your age at will is Returned ability. If you're 65 when you get your 2000th Breath, you'll be 65 forever. You won't gain the ability to choose to be 20. TLR at 5th heightening will have full control over his age without having to juggle age as he's been doing. He can store Breath elsewhere, store the accumulated age, get the Breath back when he wants to stop aging. He can probably keep his youthminds full all the time. Not sure how being ageless would hurt him.

There's a difference between Returning and reaching the 5th heightening. The former requires a Splinter of Endowment, the latter just requires an amount of Breath.

Do humans on Roshar have any sDNA differences from Yolen humans?
-
This "touching spren to corrupt them then they dive into the ground and bind with rock to become Thunderclasts" from the most recent reading, combined with "Dawnshards allow one to bind anything" (paraphrased) tells me that binding spren to stuff to create, for a lack of a better term, golems was a thing. Maybe the good guys needed Dawnshards to do it. Maybe Odium can do it without them. Or maybe he has the Dawnshards. Maybe shardblades and Oathpacts and Heralds were ways to combat the golems that the bad guys can still make but the good guys can't because they lost the Dawnshards that made it possible.

Are spren attracted to somebody/something or do they cause it?
Leuthie replied to Meg's topic in Stormlight Archive
No Highstorms so no Stormlight so no spren. Or its less direct and the same power that keeps the Highstorms out also tamps down spren. I lean toward the former: spren formation requires the local presence of Stormlight. More accurately: Stormlight causes the formation of spren. -
They are called honorspren because they are a manifestation of the concept of honor. They are attracted to honorable actions for the same reason.
