How much time should the characters in the middle of Armageddon be shown crying over the loses of individual people? Elhokar was pretty damned focused on getting his wife and child out of Kholinar. Dalinar et. al. have much bigger things to worry about and don't have time to grieve for those who may not actually be lost. Keep in mind that most of the characters were unaware of any actual losses until they found out all at once that Elhokars whole family was lost as well as the city. I'm sure he could have introduced mourning scenes here and there to show these human moments, but the book is 1200 pages long already. Can't we just assume that people in a Desolation mourn and move on to something more fun to read about?

I'm on my phone, so quoting WOB isn't going to happen... We have WOB that Unmade are splinters of Odium. We have a quote from an Unmade that they were "made and then unmade". How about Odium made each of these super spren based on his favorite Hate creating human emotions. Made. Odium was then trapped on Braize by H&C and his splinter babies were heavily impacted. Unmade At this point, they're just floating splinters of hate that Odium has some control over. At least one is possibly defecting, and they present challenges to our protagonists, but they aren't a huge player in the greater scheme of things, per the Diagram.

She brought back her people's gods, when her people were fighting and dying in a war caused by them killing a foreign king for the crime of...wanting to bring back her people's gods. While traitor is what the law calls people guilty of treason, there are other definitions of traitor; one of which is to deliver your people into the hands of an enemy.

From the perspective of watching a villain being created, Moash's progression has been great. He's a perfect anti-Jezrien, which seems to be what Odium (and BS) is setting him up as.

Venli sought power as a means to freedom. Her people were destroyed because of it (traitor). By the end of OB she's seeking freedom from the chains that her ambition and Odium tied her to. Hence her openness to bond with the comet spren. The line fits Venli perfectly by the end of OB.

You're all looking at this way too hard 1) We have no evidence that Odium splintered Honor. It could very well be that Honor splintered and sacrificed himself. By doing so, he could control where the pieces of him ended up, allowing for the current final showdown with Odium. Odium did kill Tanavast, but not before Tanavast splintered himself as he saw fit (most likely with Cultivation's guidance). Odium may be none the wiser to this aspect of Honor's death, leading to his surprise. 2) At the time of Dalinars ascension, Odium is speaking to his Fused. "We" could simply be an inclusive term he used because those he makes fight for him are listening. Odium went so far as to deny one of his Lieutenants a body to save Venli just to convince parshman that they should follow Him. Marketing is important to Him. He used We because others who helped him kill Honor are listening. 3) Syl knows exactly what Dalinar is doing when he opens up the perpendicularity. She even has a name for it. So, it's been done before. Likely by Honor. He's not tapping into some new God power. He's using the power Honor left for him. 4) Unity is not a new Shard. "I am Unity" is a Bondsmith Ideal. Really surprised no one has brought that possibility up. It could also be an aspect of Honor; a named Splinter, if you will. It could also be how Dalinar chose to answer Venli when she asked who he was. I find it hard to believe that B.S. reached very far out into the Cosmere for this scene. Dalinar has tapped into a power that Tanavast set up for him. Syl's name for it makes this clear. Odium is a trickster/marketer of hate and uses the inclusive We because his followers are listening. "We killed you" is not some hint or foreshadowing. It's just Odium being surprised while surrounded by his followers. "I am Unity" is, IMO, Dalinar's interpretation of Intent of the Splinter that Honor left for him in Stormfather. It would greatly explain why Stormfather would remember a ranting Honor around the time of the Recreance. Honor without the Unity aspect of his intent wouldn't be as good at smoothing over things with his charges.

True. My first sentence is bunk. How about this: Alter ego and "me" are two different things. My character in Dragon Age isn't me, but he does represent a part of me in the game. The last half of that quote is a better way of saying what I mean, I guess. He is there to give the author a more direct voice; A character on both sides of the third wall. Autonomous, but less so than the other characters. In any case, his purpose is beyond good vs evil.

My view is that Hoid is Sanderson. He's the direct voice of the author; an alter ego if you will. As such he's neither evil, nor good. Originally, he was just an observer, but millennia of observation has changed his view to one that requires action. I'm also guessing that this fight between 17th shard and Hoid isn't about good vs evil. Shards have specific intent. Humans don't. Humans are complex and have complex motivations. What Hoid seems to be doing goes way beyond good vs evil. When you have to choose between the destruction of a world and your ultimate goal, the game you are playing can't be judged by our understanding of good vs evil.

That WoB basically solidified one fact: Investiture is investiture. Its interaction with a planet, a Shard, or an individual's sDNA determine how the investiture manifests Physically (Breath, Stormlight, the black mist around Vasher's blade, etc), or what Effects it has (what we call magic).

Its Disney. Only the protagonists parents are allowed to die

Stormlight is raw investiture as it manifests in the Physical realm on Roshar. It is of/belongs to no one. Honor set up a regular delivery system before He was Splintered via the Highstorms. Cultivation feeds it to various creatures through gemhearts. Odium's delivery method is unknown, but may not even exist. It would make sense for him to make use of the delivery methods of the Shards he's targeting instead of Investing himself in such a way. But Stormlight itself is raw investiture; unowned and controlled by whoever can use it.

In the Recreance Vision, it appeared that the Radiants were in formation and attacking the fort. They then stopped and dropped their weapons and armor. This doesnt give a why, but it does suggest a simple how: convince your spren that you're going to kill hundreds of innocents using their power and the spren will severe their bonds. If they are weapons at that time, they're stuck as weapons.

Radiants magnitude of brokenness is irrelevant
Leuthie replied to signspace13's topic in Stormlight Archive
The spren has to have an opening to enter the Physical. The spren also has to have synergy with what its bonding with. The virtues create synergy which attracts the spren. The crack gives it something to fill. More synergy, stronger bond. Larger crack, more access to the Physical realm. -
Why does Jasnah value music over visual arts?
Leuthie replied to Fifth of Daybreak's topic in Stormlight Archive
The thing I love about "waveform theory" talk is how universal it is. Light, sound, general vibrations, viral propagation...just about everything can be thought of as a wave. Its like saying that a certain chef specializes in food. Of course you're not wrong, but you're not saying anything, either -
Why do the wikis refer to Ym as a Truthwatcher?

Why wouldn't you think Nale could be shardblading Radiants in order to remove their bonds, then bringing them back with his fabrial to serve him? He did it with Szeth...why not others?- 37 replies

Odium's spren can inhabit Chasmfiends during the Everstorm
Leuthie replied to blackmagic3's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm with RShara. Chasmfiends are Cultivation's. One reason she's giving up on humanity (as stated by Wyndle) is the mass destruction of them on the Shattered Planes. The Parshendi war is going to bite humanity in the chull in many ways -
The Diagram asks the question "Maybe we can create a Truthless" suggesting that King T put things in motion that lead Szeth to do something to cause the powers that be in Shinovar to make him Truthless.

BS quote about Hoid's humanity strikes me more as a comment about how much investiture changes people. Its like Obi-Wan saying that Darth Vader is more machine now than man. Hoid is a heavily invested human. At what point does a being who can change their shape, travel in an instant, heal themselves through thought, know things about the future...at what point is such a being no longer human? By Cosmere rules I'd say they are no longer human when they no longer think of themselves as human. So BS is saying that Hoid, because of his past and his level of investiture, no longer thinks of himself as human.

Perception. Interpretation. Parshendi in dullform interpreted Galivar's plans as they did and killed him for it. How do you know that Galivar knew that what he was planning would return the Listener's gods? And where does anything say the Galivar showed the black sphere to anyone?

If calling someone a liar isn't bad, what's wrong with calling Lightweavers liars? It fits. Since becoming a Lightweavers, Shallan has spent most of her time lying. To become a Lightweaver, she had to attract a spren who appreciated her ability at lying. We can redefine moral lies as lowercase-t truths that haven't been created yet, but the word "liar" would still apply.
-
The title of the thread seems to suggest that calling them liars is bad. They are liars. Say a lie loud enough and often enough and it becomes the truth. As for the Attributes: What is creation? Taking what exists (truth) and making something that doesn't exist (lie?) out of it. What is honesty? Internalizing what exists (truth). Through Honesty, Shallan gains strength to be more Creative.

Galivar was in the same position before he was killed as Dalinar was in WoR. He had visions of the Last Desolation and the Everstorm, of instructions from the Almighty how to prepare. Presumably, he had the same set of visions. It seems that Galivar entrusted knowledge of these visions to several people who all interpreted them their own way and believe that they're currently doing what Galivar would want them to do. The Parshendi believed that Galivar was going to bring back their gods, for which they killed him using a weapon created by King T (the Truthless, whose creation was suggested by the Diagram). Galivar had a black sphere that seems very Odium-like. Beyond all that, we know nothing. Galivars intentions are given to us only through the interpretations of others. Unreliable. I'm 100% certain that the truth is something we will have no possibility of guessing. There's a reason every prologue is going to be the night of Galivars death from different PoVs

Like a gun (or a shardblade), a lie is only as immoral as the person wielding it.

One thing we seem to forget is that Odium's goal isn't to kill humans. He Splintered Honor and is seeking to splinter Cultivation. He is probably also seeking to escape whatever trap thats currently holding him on Roshar. Cultivation becomes a wild card in this. Does she care about humanity? Will she sacrifice them to keep Odium trapped and herself safe? Lift's spren seems to indicate that both Shards on Roshar might end up as antagonists... Or as opposing forces that our protagonists get crushed between. Odium is the big bad, but there's more going on.
