You're all assuming Odiums goal is to kill off the people. What if his goal is killing off and Splintering the Shards which requires there be people left. Odium, then, wouldn't want to kill everyone. I've always had it in the back of my mind that Cultivation doesn't much want people around. Honor did but he's gone. Cultivation, maybe wants people around now for the same reason as Odium: the fight with Odium requires them.

Everyone has the stuff of Breath. Only Nathisians can move break theirs off and transfer them.

The third Mistborn series, to be written after Stormlight Archive is done, is going to be Mistborn in space. Pretty sure there is a grand plan to wrap it all up sometime in the year 2035.

The resonance doesn't have to be unique to Roshar. Of course, seeing Ruin because of a previous spike might mean that removing a spike doesn't necessarily remove everything that spike gave you.
-
The importance of music, symmetry, oaths, art, etc in relation to magic and power tells me that resonance is a good word to describe the "focus" on Roshar. Resonate with a spren and gain access to powers beyond the physical.

The Code Monkey's Object-Oriented Guide to Realmatic Theory

Theory: Rock, Paper, Scissors…Physical, Cognitive, Spiritual.
Leuthie replied to Khmauv's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Nightblood's black smoke seems to be a corruption of Breath; attaching living Soul (Cognitive and/or Spiritual) "material" to an entity that has never been alive (metal sword) causes a corruption of that Soul material (Breath). WoB says that the black smoke from the eyes on Roshar is related to the black smoke from Nightblood. So, I surmise that the black smoke from the eyes is the Physical aspect of a piece of soul corrupted and detached from the entity it came from by the Shardblade passing through it. -
Wheel of Time reference?Edit: stupid question now that I've read more of the thread.

The Shards are all native to Yolen. Holders from Yolen. Shards pieces of Adonalsium..from Yolen. They all went to planets they're not native to. Odium went elsewhere before coming to Roshar (like Sel); Honor and Cultivation went straight to Roshar. That's what Sanderson is saying.

Theory: The origin, nature, and purpose of Shardblades
Leuthie replied to Shardlet's topic in Stormlight Archive
Syl specifically uses the word "hate" to describe her feeling about Dalinar's Shardblade. Nod to its Odius nature? Is it possible that common Shardblades are powered by Odium while Szeth's blade isn't? -
Totally understand the relationships between magic systems. After all, they all have the same source and are different ways of accessing the same power. I was commenting on the evidence provided. Its coincidence; the result of the same author describing similar feelings in two different novels. As opposed to a planned nod to some Cosmeric parallel between two magic systems.
-
I think the parallel you're drawing comes about because both books were written by the same author, and both selections describe similar feelings.

Emperor's Soul Theory Discussions
Leuthie replied to Windrunner's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Since we're talking about things that quite possibly can't have a logical conclusion yet because the creator of the source of the arguments has intentionally given too little information for conclusions to be drawn, intuition and gut can be used as valid arguments. However, don't expect anyone to buy into your feeling without some quality salesmanship. -
Takes about 6 months after the first draft is completed to get a book out. So January seems about right

I'm not in a position to look for quotes, but PM just posted a relevant one in another thread. The bolded line is consistent with how many speak of he Radiants. No specifics are given, but "turn against mankind" is kind of strong if all the Radiants are accused of doing is putting their weapons down at the wrong time. They did something prior to the Recreance that made them hated but still needed. They put down their weapons for another reason which I'm guessing is discovery of the death of Honor and that they were tricked...consistent with the story given by Hoid to the first known new member of the Knights Radiant.

Lerasium grafts on, or changes, the sDNA necessary to access Allomancy when its burned by a non-user. Only gems store Stormlight, not metal, so lerasium wouldn't store Stormlight. And Lerasium has nothing to do with Roshar magic systems, so it wouldn't add the ability to use Surges.

It's a bit too complicated a story with too many parallels to have such a simple moral lesson as its purpose. And such a straightforward purpose isn'tHoid's style. And was the Recreance before the Last Desolation? I was postulating that Honor died before the Recreance.

Forgery can replicate the effects of Awakening (Temporarily)
Leuthie replied to LiquidBlue's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Breath is an indentity-free piece of a person's soul. Everyone has this piece. Only Nalthisians can break it off and Endow it to someone else. The ability to do so is the Investiture. The only way to forge this is if there's a possibility that the person in question could have been born to Nalthisians.- 13 replies

Vorinism and the Decline of Historic Knowledge
Leuthie replied to The Rooster's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm sure it works both ways. I'm sure the misdeeds of the KR have been greatly exaggerated. However, its impossible to vilify a perfect hero. Before stepping down, the KR did things that made it possible for them to be vilified. Stepping down at a time of peace (when they weren't needed) wouldn't be enough to turn them into villains. They would still be revered. Read the epigraph quotes. "We were loved once" "Almighty, why have you forsaken us" etc. There's evidence that the KR were betrayed from both ends: by Honor and by the people. Honor's betrayal (or death followed by Odium's wirk) made them vilifiable, the people's betrayal made them vilified. The knowledge of both made them quit. Looking forward to more information too, and of course this is all speculation. Having to say so every time seems strange to me.- 52 replies

Quick and dirty (quoteless) OP to get discussion started. Post quotes later. Wit/Hoid tells Kaladin a story. An explorer sails East (West?) Toward the source of the Storms. At the source he finds an island. Idyllic. Problem is they kill people for the darnedest reasons. They explain their actions by claiming their Emperor says it must be so. The explorer goes to find this emperor and discovers that he's been dead for quite a while. This knowledge causes such hysteria that the explorer must leave. He takes with him his guide on the island, who explains to him the whole mess. Okay. Much speculation about what Hoid was trying to hint Kaladin about. My quick and dirty speculation: -The Island is metaphorical. It represents a people who follow Honor, represented by the long dead emperor. -The discovery and following hysteria represents the Recreance. The Lost Radiants discover that it wasn't Honor that set them on their present course since he's been dead a while without them knowing, so they disband, probably with much fighting. -The explorer could be anyone, but might be Hoid on a previous visit to Roshar. -The guide is a Herald, still hanging around after ending the Oathpact. Total speculation. So what I'm saying is that Honor dies long before the Recreance. Odium takes advantage of his death to seed The Knights Radiant with bad juju that makes the world much dislike them. When someone finally discovers that Honor is dead (quite possibly a visiting Hoid lead by a Herald), the KR turn on each other and disband (The Recreance proper). I'll head off one argument by pointing out that Dalinar's Honor vision of the Recreance was the most surreal of them not counting the one where Honor actually showed up. It ended with a KR talking to Dalinar in a way that really seemed like Honor answering his question. It took place at a fort that didn't exist (at least Dalinar can't find any mention of it ever existing). And the way the KR just ran up to a fort in force and dropped their stuff just doesn't jive with other descriptions of the Recreance. In other words, the vision Honor gives Dalinar of the Recreance is one that Tanavast guessed at. While he says Cultivation is better at telling the future, he doesn't say that he can't do it. Honor was long dead during the Recreance.

Vorinism and the Decline of Historic Knowledge
Leuthie replied to The Rooster's topic in Stormlight Archive
Odium's on Roshar and Invested too much to leave. Its fairly obvious that Alethkar culture has been twisted into something that serves Odium's purposes. Culture and religion play off each other constantly; one changes the other and the other changes one over lifetimes. So it makes sense that Vorinism would be part of this corruption of culture.- 52 replies
