  1. "Well a knife is just a really short sword, right? So the only difference is length, and throwing...I think." Miyako tilted her head, realizing she didn't use knives that much. "In fights you will have the shorter reach, so you have to be real close for stabbing or far away for throwing. You'll also be bad at blocking. But that's where your floating and shields come in." "But wait, wouldn't someone be easier to detect when using magic? If someone didn't use magic for like, a year, would they still be detectable even though they wouldn't have been using energy?"
  2. Miyako nodded, dismissing the idea. "The problem with knife fighting, is I know how to use 'em cause I know how to use swords. I don't really know how to teach you without using sword forms and techniques."
  3. Miyako paused, thinking. "That could be easier for you to learn and it would help you progress faster. Could you do that?"
  4. Brandon in the past has tried to quantify investiture. He hired a bunch smart people and had a whole project where they tried to find exact amounts of investiture in different magic systems and measurements. What they found out is that is would be basically impossible to do this, and it would put too much of a limit on Brandon to try and stay consistent across the cosmere with exact amounts of investiture. So even though it would be very cool to quantify investiture, it is unlikely that it will ever happen.
  5. Miyako scowled at Hyron. "We need to work on your knife fighting first. You can't fight if you can't attack."
  6. Miyako set her mouth in a hard line. You couldn't just walk up and heal someone without permission! And why did she want him to do it? Tides! This was a mess. Confused, Miyako choose the simplest option. She ignored it. She spared Hyron a glare and then turned to Yerik. "Let's start your training."
  7. Miyako folded her arms, defiant. "I've walked off a broken leg, I've trained in crippling pain. I've survived this far on my own. I don't need your help." Miyako said, staring Hyron down, daring him.
  8. I wouldn't say the girls are making fun of us. It is more that their commentary is breaking down our cognitive function and our collective grip on reality as they analyze the hopelessness and irony that is life. Also hello, I'm here.
  9. "Wait, why do people have different manifestations of magic?" Quest asked, fascinated with Vance's lecture.
  10. At Yerik's response Miyako grumbled, but realized he was right. She couldn't fight the sea. Miyako began blushing as Hyron walked up and grabbed her hands, looking at them. Tides, who was this Hwind? She sat their frozen while he examined her hands but pulled away as he spoke. "Nowhere I can't handle." Miyako declared. She smothered her blush and turned to Yerik. "Let's start your training. We have to use this times stuck in here for something." Quest had walked in to ask Vance's opinion, but the current conversation was much more interesting. Vance seemed to know to much about magical theory to be just a simple warrior. Who was this man? Quest piped up from the doorway, "The elements, right?"
  11. Miyako let herself be shepherded into the hold, resisting the urge to stay above deck and... do something. It felt good to be out on the deck, controlled by the will of the sea. Protected by only her skill and wits. Miyako's true domain. They entered the hold and out of the rain. Miyako focused for a second and then all the water on her body, seeping through her clothes and hair floated off, forming a blob of water. She nudged open the door and channeled it into a stream, out the door. Miyako turned to the rest of the group, "What are we going to do?" Miyako asked.
  12. Miyako finished trying the rope and saw Hyron lashing the sails with vines. It looks like it was time to get back down to the deck. As Miyako began to climb down the mast the ship lurched in the waves, throwing her off. As Miyako sailed through the air she grabbed at a rope, narrowly grasping it. It burned as the rope slide through her fingers, wet in the rain. Miyako gritted her teeth against the pain and struggled to slow her fall, but the rope slipped out of her hands. Miyako fell, twisting to try and land on her feet. She landed hard, rolling to minimize the impact. Tides, that would leave a few bruises. Miyako stood up groaning, and stumbled over to Hyron and Yerik. She grinned at them, despite her pain and called out through the wind. "We should be ready for the worst of it!"
  13. Yes, Wax is descended from Breeze and Alllrianne but I don't think that means a lot. The bloodlines would still have been diluted a ton from skaa blood. Sure, Wax might have strong coinshot abilities but that could just be the natural variance in allomantic power. I don't think you could really point to Wax's heritage for his strong allomancy. Yes Wax is related to full nobles but so are most current metalborn. Wax might be generally stronger from noble blood, but not specifically strong.
  14. Quest was squatting just outside the newly set up camp, scribbling away at his notebook. The yard surrounding the house was the perfect clearing to camp. Glancing up from his notebook Quest was pleased with where he would be living for the next while. The clearing was filled with a tent holding supplies and personal possessions, several sleeping bags, a firepit, and log for seating. With the rays of sun shifting through the leaves and view out into the forest it was actually very picturesque. Quest went back to writing. He was just a yard away from the house walls, trying to figure out the language the witch was using. The faint scratching of pencil and songs of birds sounded through the quiet clearing. The runes were alien to Quest, but he was beginning to see patterns. Given time he could certainly decode the meaning. With that thought Quest smiled and returned to his research. Miyako looked around at the ship and saw the ship members struggling to get to ship into storm condition. They slipped around, tying ropes and checking the ship. Most were below deck or tied to the ship but, tides, this was a mess. Miyako cut through Hyron's vine, slipping her hand out his. She called back to Hyron and Yerik as she ran across the deck. "Cover me!" She glanced around before setting her sights on a man struggling to tie rope to the mast, hanging on for life. Finally a challenge. Miyako smiled and leapt into action. As the ship listed to starboard, she slid across the deck, sheathing her sword. Miyako pushing off the deck, leaping towards the mast. She landing on her feet running up a angle before the ship started to swing back around. She leapt up once more and caught onto a beam of wood. She used the momentum to pull herself up to the sailor. Miyako grabbed the startled man before he could fall off and yelled at him, telling him to go down. As he protested Miyako pulled the rope away from him and began expertly tying it to the mast. Tides, this was fun.
  15. Surprised, Miyako looked down at Hyron's hand in hers. She paused, looking at his face and then squeezed his hand once, holding on tight. "We aren't going down. We are more capable than half your crew combined!" Miyako yelled back, waving her sword for emphasis.
  16. Miyako was wallowing in self pity when she heard shouting from the main deck. She snapped up from her bed and whipped out her sword. She leapt from the bed and opened the door; having already discarding her backpack in the room's chest. Miyako stumbled out to the deck, fighting the movement of the ship. She took in the scene of panic and mayhem, noting the dark clouds that stretched across the horizon. She ran up to Yerik and Hyron, pushing against the wind. "What the tides is this!" Miyako screamed through the storm.
  17. Miyako didn't blush. Miyako never blushed, and therefore she couldn't be blushing right now. Miyako flicked her eyes up up at Hyron before quickly looking at the vine. She slid her sword through the vine and into the sheath, smoothy. Very smoothly. She shook the vine off her arm and cleared her throat. "Umm, good work Yerik." She turned back towards Hyron face bright red. "I need to rest. I'll, umm, be in my room." She quickly brushed past Hyron and out onto the deck. Tides, what was that? Miyako gritted her teeth as she strode across the ship with purpose. Miyako put off a strong face to the world so that it knew it couldn't hurt her. If she cared for something then she could be hurt again. So why had something gotten past her blockade? Why was something growing in her heart? She got to the back of the ship, where Yerik said the rooms were. She threw open the first one and slammed the door, breathing hard. She walked over to the bed and collapsed, sinking into the mattress. Tides.
