Thank you! I am curious why you think this is not plausible. To me it seemed more like an inevitability, since Roshar is one of the few planets where people know about shadesmar so well. And Brandon should not kill stormfather with anti stormlight, my heart can't handle that. Phendorana's death was the worst.
-
So I have some predictions for the night of sorrows, in no particular order: 1)A significant part of Roshar will be shattered by wave of destruction which will look like a duststorm 2)The stormfather will die. No more stormlight 3)This either cause a unending weeping or the everstorm never stops 4) Shadesmar sun will set 5) Humans will migrate to shadesmar 1)Duststorm The second death rattle seems to be more about thunderclasts but I still think, 'the world was shattered' is saying exactly what we think it's saying. Also there will definitely be a loooot of thunderclasts in the next book for the final battle. 'The stones reached towards the heavens' might about the dust reaching high. So I think there will be a duststorm coming next book. Stone will be divided into molecules which will be carried by the winds causing a duststorm. Don't know what's causing the earthquake. Also maybe we will learn why they are called thunderclasts? What is causing the division? The surge of division prolly. Whose going to do it tho, hmmmm? 2) Stormdaddy dies, no more stormlight Stormfather has constantly been berated by people for not showing mercy to people, not only that he has been growing to understand humanity and why they break their oaths. He understands why the heralds peaced out and curses Dalinar for giving him this understanding. He even cracks a joke at one point in RoW(Like father like daughter). But he constantly mentions that he cannot break his speed for anyone and stresses that there will be consequences The theory is Stormdaddy will reflexively try to stop himself when he sees that a city full of people devasted by the duststorm (or something like that) will be killed. This prolly will tear him from the highstorm and cause a hole somewhere that Todium can strike upon. Killing him Or maybe Stormdaddy knows what will happen but does it anyway. Sacrificing himself fully? Anyway this will be the darkest point of the book. Literally. Because stormfather merged with the cognitive shadow of honor. So when he dies, honor will die completely. Stormlight will now be very limited. Also the lowest point is also called 'the dark night of the soul' in narratives, just like night of sorrows. I don't think the stormfather will have such a sad death and never come back. I mean even Evi popped in for a hot sec as a voice to Dalinar. But that prolly happens near the end of the book. I see what u did there , Brandon 3) Unending weeping or everstorm Nothing much to say here. It could be the weeping, which has been a phenomenon on roshar already, when the stormfather prolly recharges his stormlight. Also 'weeping' and night of 'sorrows' It could also be an unending everstorm, then the name would make sense. Who nose Anyway there will sure be a lot of flooding on the available land 4) Shadesmar sun will set The last two are just dialogues, but that's the exact place authors put foreshadowing because dialogues are not expected to contain them. Also there are prolly more dialogues like this. This is the two I found. While they seem to be talking about the regular old sun, I think it's far more likely that it's talking about the sun in shadesmar. It stays fixed in position, near the horizon. I just don't think odium is strong enough to threaten the actual sun. We know from a wob, that the reason shadows lie towards the sun in shadesmar is connected to pull of the beyond( which is after the spiritual realm) In fact, the sun might actually be the spiritual realm itself. We know that odium has enough power to hurt the realm. Maybe todium hurts the SR through the Stormfather? He has a window to the SR afterall. 5) Migration to Shadesmar We know from the 'man stood on a cliffside' death rattle that people on a cliff seemed to be fine. This means the oathgate of Urithiru prolly will be fine too. This will be how humanity escapes calamity and extinction. A sizable chunk will still die, making book 5 the darkest book yet. I was not sold on this prediction until I remembered this. Remember the land-water inversion in shadesmar? Land is a body of water on shadesmar and vice versa. What a wierd rule right? Never made sense to me. In this theory, land will get replaced by water in the PR! That means shadesmar will slowly gain new land! Perfect for humans to live in. From a story standpoint, this will be a great way to make roshar cosmere level quickly and believably, since they live in shadesmar and can learn about realmatics way easily now. Navani will find out how to make fabrials without trapping spren. As to how they will survive without a sun in shadesmar, I have other theories.... What do u guys think? Please tear this apart.

[Discuss] Windrunner 5th Ideal
KaladinWorldsinger replied to Mason Wheeler's topic in Stormlight Archive
Interesting point of view, but I would say Kaladin definitely chose both times to end his life, but syl and Dalinar could not care less Kal: I wanna die Stormdaddy: what about syl? Kal: too weak Daddynar: lemme connect u with ur bro, bro Kal: wut? It just doesn't make sense to let Moash die( who is definitely going to try to kill himself) because no one really wants to die. Kal has proved that twice. Stormlight archive is about 'broken' people. All of the main characters are broken. Radiants are almost by definition broken(not exactly), the heralds and their torture are obvious metaphors for mental illnesses, even spren need to be healed from being a deadeye or broken If syl had given up on kal in the first book, kal the radiant would not have happened. Shallan was integral to the battle at thaylen fields nd she deserves help. The only person the series has given up on is Sadeas, who was petty, born in a stupid culture and not broken. Moash is not written to be Sadeas. He is broken first, evil idiot later. Kal just won't let Moash die. Atleast it would not work with the theme of the series at all. Also, Dalinar has done the worst crime ever in the series but he is redeemed at the end. Edit: Also even elhokar got a redemption arc before his death, and teft was killed only after he fully accepted himself. -

I think the level of detail is exactly why he is going to get a redemption arc, because if not, if he is supposed to be a villain, then why show us the whole process. I haven't seen many good redemption arcs, most are just ok. But I disagree that 'good' redemption arcs don't focus on the character's mistakes. I find it to be the opposite -

I have theory based on the idea that maybe relador( syl's old radiant) was a fifth ideal radiant. I think it it makes sense, syl slept for centuries right( someone correct me if I am wrong). That much damage should mean fifth ideal prolly. And we also know he was old. And that he traveled to villages or something. That means the fifth ideal lets you leave the frontlines. I think this will be the final exposition that syl will give to Kaladin, some knowledge about what kind of thing the fifth ideal is. I think it will be one of these these three I will let others protect themselves I will help others protect themselves I will lead others to protect themselves The whole kill to protect debate always stemmed from his issues with Lirin, which is resolved-ish when Lirin kind of allows it at the end of RoW. Moash, on the other hand, is still unresolved.... Kaladin's ideal will be the second one, helping people. He wants to be a therapist afterall. Theory time: Moash will torment kal more, kal won't fight him much, try to reason with him more, Moash will lose his pain taking gift. When Moash starts feeling all his guilt, he will try to take the easy route and try to kill himself Kal will think about letting this happen and then remember tien's horse. This will make him remember the one time where kal helped tien instead of the other way around( when tien was called to the army and he was terrified and kal decides to protect his normally happy brother by touching the horse in the flashback) He will rush forward and stop Pathetic Moash from killing himself. Moash will ask why " Because life is worth living. Because it's not all just pain. You will be warm again. But You need to live and face consequences for your actions. You need to fix what you have done" Moash will say " I don't have the strength to do that. I can't handle that pain" Kal will say " I will help. I have decided. I will help others protect themselves" Dalinar, across the continent, in middle of battle will say, These words are accepted. To people saying Moash should just die, I agree. But I don't think that meshes well with kal becoming a therapist. Also deadeyes can be healed evidenced by Adolin, they are broken spren ( metaphor for broken people). And what did Moash become? Blind. A literal deadeye. Moash is broken, there is no way kal the therapist will just let him die or kill him. That I am pretty sure is right. If Moash is not getting a redemption arc, then there is no way Brandon would have gone into nearly as much depth as he already has. Or made him blind. So even if you want Moash to die, it's not gonna happen Another question, is this the first redemption arc Brandon has done? -
Since we are on the internet, you sadly cannot see me hyperventilating about what you just said and how this was genius. I was a little unconvinced before about my theory( I still think this is how Kaladin should end) but I didn't actually think that Kaladin would lose his powers. You sir have convinced me of my own theory, have my damn upvote

tWoK got away with it because 'the' is very invisible. U can't do something like that with a 't' at the end. Honestly I don't want all that. I just want 'The night of sorrows'. That would be amazing

Guys the the only two suggestions possible is Knight of woe( ref night of sorrows) Knights of honor Anything else is just too complicated and aesthetically not pleasing.
-
Well if the duststorm continues, there wouldn't be much ground left. I also don't know what a event like this would do to plate tectonics. Make a planet uninhabitable maybe. Relocation to shadesmar? I like to think the duststorm is the night of sorrows

My thought process was more along the lines of: Kaladin has the strongest possible bond with syl> Syl survives the pull into PR due to the strength of the bond and can actually live > syl becomes a functional human and two humans can't have a nahel bond> so no radiance anymore. Another reason for this happening is that Kaladin if he survives would be a fourth level or fifth level radiant with 10 years of experience. Pretty op for someone who wouldn't be a main character. Todium is exactly the kind of guy who would destroy one third of humanity to save the two-thirds. Also the night of sorrows prolly happens next book, soo.. something bad might happen. Thank you

KaladinWorldsinger replied to bmcclure7's topic in Stormlight Archive

Hmm, I know there is a lot of evidence and foreshadowing for it. But it seems like such a sad ending for kaladin, never having a proper enjoyable life. He will become involved in the greater cosmere wars and will see a lot of his friends and their descendants die. Also the scale of his protection just skyrockets ( one bridge crew,to elhokar, to dailnar, to Urithiru to suddenly all of roshar for the rest of time) I don't know, Kaladin seems like a guy who constantly takes up leadership by responsibility. He becomes a living legend sort of by accident than an actual conscious decision. I really like him on smaller scale problems. Didn't hoid promise him, 'he will be warm again?'

My theory revolves around finding the BEST thematic ending for kaladin. The thematic is important because that excludes narrative foreshadowing or clever wordplays and stuff. This is strictly the ending Kaladin should get if the the plot went along with his character arc. For example The name kaladin means 'born unto eternity', the line' Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do' and 'Son of Tanavast' seems to imply that Kaladin would become Honor. There is foreshadowing but it's not the most natural conclusion to kaladin's arc. Same with him being a herald or becoming king(that one stupid death rattle) What I think the most natural thematic conclusion will be: Kaladin becomes a worldsinger. Kal will go with szeth to shinovar. His budding therapist skills will be put to the test by szeth and ishar. This will become more complicated near the ending with the arrival of Moash. Kal will have a struggle if he really should kill Moash and then chooses to instead talk some sense into Moash. On the other side, something happens to todium prolly and Moash loses his 'gift' to not feel pain. So if he can't escape pain, what will he do? Moash will try to end his miserable life. Kal runs forward, grabs the weapon and says the fifth ideal, 'I will help others protect themselves'. The suicidal character will stop someone from killing themselves. Kool Kaladin moments ensue, for three seconds. Ishar goes crazy again, creates a perpendicularity and pulls syl thru it. Syl becomes a full human.( No I am not a syladin shipper) And Kaladin loses his epic stormlight powers and becomes a normal human again. I am guessing he will still use the windrunnur honorblade for the final fight before giving it up for Dalinar to reforge honor or something. My big theory is that the night of sorrows will be the darkest event in the books, where a major catstrophe occurs, a significant fraction of humanity will die(like a third). The human race will survive by escaping to shadesmar, but be broken by the sudden calamity At the end of book 5, Kaladin will start living more for himself while still doing his best to help other people. He wants to be a therapist. Who has been giving Kaladin free therapy since book one? Wit. The worldsinger who shares stories. Also after a calamity, knowledge will prolly be hard to pass around, humans will be fragmented. Stories, like the legend of stormblessed and a religion around Dalinar and oathbringer will connect people. Kaladin will finally learn how to play a flute and sing honor's and cultivation's rhythms to people as Instructions to create stormlight or lifelight. So kal and sigzil will go around shadesmar listening to and sharing their own stories almost definitely around a stew. Kaladin as the posterboy of the new worldsingers will become the travelling swordsman kind of figure/legend, cuz he will still be a badass in normal combat. He will prolly try to bridge the gap between humans and singers and listeners. In the back half of stormlight, kal will be a zahel, wit kind of figure who wouldn't be invested but still pretty badass. He could be the therapist for the new heroes. He will also reveal that in 10-15 years he has been successful in reviving many of the deadeyes, something he learned from Adolin, which will quite literally save the good guys side. Why does no honorspren bond Kaladin u ask? Because a nahel bond is more 'intimate' than even a romantic bond and I am pretty sure the honorSpren would consider Kaladin 'taken' and violating it 'cheating'. Kaladin might become a edgedancer, but only in the distant future. This is my perfect ending to Kaladin. What do u guys think?
