How did ancient Radiants + Heralds break?
Master Silver replied to Lanaya's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thank you for providing an excellent topic. Before the Knights Radiant and spren bond, the Heralds did lots of the heavy lifting. Thanks to there being a long time between desolations things worked out ok. BUT humanity lost a little ground every time. It is likely the fused kept getting more and more of an edge until the Knights Radiant were formed. This in turn shifted the balance heavily in favor of the humans, until the Fused learned how to deal with it. Eventually, because of the high casualties, even the Knights Radiant wasn't enough. Radiants need time to train and progress with their powers. The Fused just need spare bodies. Also, singers with their different forms have a big advantage in terms of not needing armor or as much training, for whatever they are doing. The form provides natural talent. Warform provides strength and armor. Humans have to train to gain a soldier's physic which is still weaker than warform. I think as was said by Isilel that the humans were just ground down. -
If Moash has a redemption arc (since he might). Kaladin is going to hopefully reforge the oathpact. Moash still has Jezrian's honor blade. Perhaps what Moash does is sacrifice himself and Kaladin allows it and even deals the killing blow while swearing the fifth ideal. Something like, "I will allow others to die protecting, so long as it is honorable."

Dalinar's Champion and THAT Deathrattle
Master Silver replied to Crossen's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yes she can. Nothing against Jasnah or Shallan, I just imagine (if the contest turns out to be a duel and not an eating contest) Odium's champion will be decked out in plate. Remember how tough Eshoni was in Words of Radiance. And she was only a regal with 5-7 years of combat experience. The surge of transformation wouldn't work on plate or anything carrying enough stormlight (I think) -
Dalinar's Champion and THAT Deathrattle
Master Silver replied to Crossen's topic in Stormlight Archive
Wouldn't Nale be technically the best fighter that Odium has? If Kaladin has been shown to beat the best of the Fused besides El, I would imagine that every Herald is more than a match for a Fused 1v1. Dalinar, Adolin, Szeth, and Kaladin are currently the best team Radiant has to offer. Nothing against Jasnah or Shallan, they just don't have the same sort of combat experience. Kaladin bowed out of the duel. Dalinar said he was going to be the champion. Adolin doesn't have access to stormlight. So very likely it will be Dalinar. Can Dalinar borrow Kaladin's plate? Or maybe form a bond with his old plate and Oathbringer (bringing them to life somehow). Sort of what Kalak does. But even then, it is still a Herald. -
Yeah it is a chilling cliffhanger isn't it? This is where I think Hoid's bond is going to come into play. His spren is going to meet back up with him. Hoid is going to try to perform the same trick again (since she didn't witness his awesomeness) and explain that she has seen him do it before. Right before meeting Odium. Then Hoid will know what happened. But likely, this won't happen till it is our almost is too late to do anything to change the plan.

How heart breaking would it be if Ishar forcibly takes Szeth's and Kaladin's Nale bonds, kills them. Bondsmith, Skybreaker, Windrunner. I think that would be terrifying. I'm still curious of how powerful Heralds are. I do think that Ishar is going to be the one that is used for Kaladin's big reveal. Can Szeth use division to temporarily correct madness. Wait.. Wait I've got it, cleansing Shinovar... Szeth swears idea bringing Ishar back to sanity briefly he fixes stuff, and then reveals Kaladin's Child of Tanavast connection.

This is still what under two years into the conflict? The Fused have been continually surprised by how good the Radiants are when stripped of their powers. Perhaps we can call that a theme of RoW. How ironic it would be if El is the champion and he goes in expecting to be invulnerable to a shard blade, and Dalinar, the good old Blackthorn shows up with a long sword LOL. Aluminum does very poorly against steel, or so I've heard :-p One problem is, that with the new Odium, he knows Dalinar too well, and might predict that.
-
So I did like the idea that the last two oaths would be about leadership. But the protection theme seems to be going strong. I do think, "I will protect myself so that I may continue to protect others" would be a great 5th ideal. It would bring Kaladin's arc to a good conclusion. He seems to be on this path now. It could also be something like, "I protect by continuing to lead." OR Life is more than protecting other

[Discuss] Why aren't the Singers extinct?
Master Silver replied to Gnmish's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I can see most of the knights and spren break their oaths rather than kill defenseless Parshmen. -
[Discuss] Why aren't the Singers extinct?
Master Silver replied to Gnmish's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think that is a great point. Think of it like a hail mary in football. Every desolation, the victory that stopped or contained the Singers became more and more desperate. And when the singers had realms and armis and fortresses, I think the humans just were able to stop the Singers ability to wage war for a time. But the singers have so many natural advantages. It isn't until the Knights Radiant and surge binders that the humans start to make gains, but these are countered by the singers. The only opportunity to wipe the Singers out was when most of them were Parshmen, but human greed (and maybe decency) stopped them from doing that. But yeah, Rabboni came to that conclusion too. The cycle must stop and someone has to pass into the void. -
You don't think Navani would leave in order to be with her beloved Dalinar? The Fused just lost their top scientist. Taravangian certainly could spin this in a way that he is the hero, and Dalinar is going off to be noble and kill insane gods. In a way it would be the same sort of WHHHAT plot flip that happened in the mistborn series.

I could see both Jasnah and Navani in a knee jerk reaction to Dalinar losing, going after him, and Kaladin saying wait!!! When Navani leaves, she breaks her bond with the sibling. Jasnah abdicates to go be a world hopper/ Kaladin takes up the crown and running the tower (Dalinar's Kingdom) while perhaps the sibling bonds to Relain after all.

Who is the Other Sliver? (from the Brandon Shardcast)
Master Silver replied to teknopathetic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
We might as well make a list of the most heavily invested characters on Roshar and see if we can tease it out. Thanks for jogging my memory. I need to read Elantris again. 1. Shards-Odium, Cultivation 2. Shattered Honor 3. Hoid (who is a silver), 4. Nale (Herald+5th ideal Radiant) 5. Heralds 6. Vasher (not sure where he is in terms of number of breaths). I'd say 2000 breaths is below the Heralds, but 40k is above them. 7. Fused 8. Radiants 9. Adolin 10. Soul casters/ shard bearers (who are bonded to dead eyes) 11. Singers 12. Humans -
Who is the Other Sliver? (from the Brandon Shardcast)
Master Silver replied to teknopathetic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
SPOLIER-ish. So, would the emperor (from the planet of Endowment) count as a sliver? Because if 500 breaths makes you immortal, 10k breaths is getting up there. How many breaths were needed to awaken NIghtblood? So perhaps Vasher. My other thought is Kaladin. Child of Tanavast and all that. Maybe a Ghostblood? -
I'm still curious about what happens if a Shard is split in half. You are far more than a splinter at that point, but far less than a full shard. Could that be a way to keep the Shard from completely overtaking a persons personality? If Dalinar dies, what happens to the Stormfather? Between the Stormfather, the Honor blades, Honor Spren, and Syl+Kaladin, what amount of the Shard of Honor do you think they make up. If Kaladin being the "child of Tanavast" bears out, then this is backwards. Stormfather = 20%, Honor blades = 5%, Honor Spren =15%, Sly+Kaladin =.05%. A normal Windrunner would be .001%. Not that Kaladin is accessing all of his power as the child of Tanavast yet. I see him as equaling a Herald upon swearing the fifth ideal. I think it would take 10 WIndrunners of the 4th ideal to take on a Herald. Just my thoughts while adding random numbers

Yes, but the intelligent spren, if they knew that there was a way to help them return from being unmade, perhaps they could talk with the Sibling, the intelligent ones might listen because they are tired of being enslaved to Odium
-
I completely agree. And they way Shallan gets other people to become their best self, a lot like what Renarian showed at the beginning of Rhythms of War. So get the correct rhythm, infuse them with their natural light while getting rid of Odium's void light. This should, kill and remake them. Especially if they are willing to be remade. Any thoughts on what the Thrill would end up as? Or what bonding the thrill would do. Talin+Thrill= game over for anyone he fights
-
Even though Jasnah is the best at Transformation, I think it would take a light weaver+bondsmith to remake and unmade. Dalinar would need to connect to them the way he did Ishar and see what they are, convey that to the light weaver who then transforms them into their (best self), like Shallan did with the deserters. Just my two cents on how it would be done.

Have had platoon sergeants that were just brilliant, I loved this friendship between Teft and Kaladin. It also was unexpected for me. I've been putting people in the safe category once they hit the third ideal. They just become so much harder to kill. But then this happened. Are any of them truly safe :-(

Heralds madness - corrupted purposes
Master Silver replied to IndigoAjah's topic in Stormlight Archive
What if the Heralds madness is due to not being reincarnate. So we know they are all cognitive shadows right? So their cognitive selves take physical form. Honor knew they would die over and over again. So, what if them dying was supposed to act as a reset button, taking them back to the time when they were their best selves. They retain their memories, but their cognitive shadows upon reincarnation are the selves that took up the oath pact. The further they stray from the oath pact and their noble sacrifice the more they become the inverse of what they were. And perhaps Talin's madness is also due to them eventually not killing him anymore and just going around the oath pact. So I wonder if a normal death would reset them so to speak. No idea when I wrote the above ^^^^ I was just wondering how much of a power shift having (9 now) Heralds healed of their madness and fighting for team Radiant. Do you think the humans could win even with the Everstorm? -
True, forgot about that. What do you think of his blindness? I think it a direct result of his murdering Teft. Part of Moash, not his mind, but spirit is telling him that the path he is on is actually causing him more pain, and Kaladin's way, with stew, and friendship gathering around a fire is the way to deal with pain, not giving it to the void. Until Moash recognizes that, he will be blind. Hard to see a redemption arc though..... He does have Jezrian's blade and an iron will. Other's have said it, but he could take Jezrian's place.
-
And think about what it took to make Moash fail in his mission. Kaladin swearing the fourth ideal, something many including himself didn't think he was capable of. Also, the Pursuer kinda disobeyed a direct order, and is somewhat responsible for this. That makes Kaladin the third (If shallan has her's) Radiant for team Honor with plate. Aside from that, Navani needed to become a Bondsmith and a Fused had to betray Odium for her to not die. So really, I would say very extraordinary circumstances caused Moash's failure. It will be interesting it Moash is cast aside a broken and useless. He is in the mountains somewhere. What if he is found by the Horneaters and brought to Rock.

Where is the blade representing Testament
Master Silver replied to Dakaladin's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yeah, Shallan is still bonded to it. This is the blade she uses to kill Tin (I think that is her name), on the way to the Shattered Plains. So it just puffs to mist. I say this because I don't think Shallan had progressed enough in her oaths for Pattern to become a blade. So I think somehow Shallan killed Testament, mostly, but was still bonded to her because she didn't break her oaths as thoroughly as the Radiants during the Recrenece (mostly because she was a child and didn't know what she was doing). -
Radiants will just need to keep their gems containing stormlight in a sealed box (maybe made of aluminum, that makes it so light cannot escape. Also, I think having Radiants of the fourth ideal, who can place their gems inside their armor, and are also far less susceptible to these type of attacks will be key. Finally, After listening again to the end of the book, Odium is talking about terrible endings. Removing the fused that are insane by anti-void light makes sense. But his sane fused. I doubt he wants to risk them in pitch battle before the contest. Especially if he thinks he can win. Keeping all of that experience will be vital and give him a huge edge over the armies of other Shards. The only issue is, I think he is going to be very surprised at the the tech advantages of other civilizations. But I'm of the mind that magic beats tech.
