Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Knight of Iron replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted! Your entire country is flooded with a miles worth of snow and everybody is buried alive. The temperature drops to -50 degrees Fahrenheit / -45 degrees Celsius. Everyone still somehow has internet (fueled by Cultivation's Investiture, of course) and they communicate the news nationwide that winter break has begun and will end when they figure out how to get rid of all the snow. Your bane is that you are now allergic to snow. I wish to join the Ghostbloods. -
I've got another one. I present a case against Jasnah Kholin. 1) She kept the Voidbringer secret a secret for just long enough that when it finally got out, it was mostly too late She claims no one would've believed her, sure, but really? The whole world of scholars look up to her, and she expects us to believe that nobody would believe that one of the most highly-renowned scholars, a heretic, believed the Parshendi were Voidbringers. Yeah, right. A heretic worried about the threat of Voidbringers? That only gives it more credibility. She must've withheld it for some time so that the Alethi could push the Parshendi to the heightening of their desperation. She wanted the Voidbringers to come back all along. Why? Maybe she's evil. Or maybe she just wanted to study them while they destroyed the world. 2) She was gone during all the events preceding the Everstorm After practically guaranteeing nobody would be safe from the parsh when the Voidbringers returned, she left the Physical Realm. Sure, sure, she was investigating but not learning much. Doubt it. I mean, it's Jasnah we're talking about here. She knew all along, she saw the signs, and so she abandoned everyone. When her plans didn't work as well as she expected them too, she came back right when all the immediate danger was over. Awfully suspicious. 3) She has a tendency to try and kill people for not very good reasons First off, I'll bring up her past in that she hired an assassin to, eventually, kill off Aesudan. Why? Probably not for good reasons, that's why! Probably just because she was annoying. What a dumb reason to kill someone. Then there's the issue of Renarin. Sure, he was acting all suspiciously with his corrupted spren and Voidish seeing the future, but he's still her cousin. She didn't even give him a chance to explain himself. The only reason she didn't was because she remembered that she had evil purposes, so therefore Renarin became a very useful tool in her evil plans. All this, not to mention the time she Soulcasted those dudes (they hadn't even done anything yet!), purposely leading them to her. To satisfy her bloodthirst, clearly. Conclusion: Jasnah Kholin is an outright liar, a deceiver, and a cool, calm, and calculated murderer who seeks to bring in the end of the world as quickly as possible, endangering the lives of those she pretends to love while saving her own skin. All for what is likely scholarly purposes. Side note: Imagine if we get some of this stuff right, that we are actually picking up on legit foreshadowing and exposing his plot twists, lol.

Yes, just the other day I was looking at Way of Kings and saw Dalinar's chapter title as Unity... . Plus, upon reading the epigraphs, I am so frustrated with myself I was never able to get what seem to be otherwise obvious things. This epigraph, for example, really got me: After finishing the book, I figured it was talking about the Voidbringers. Never realized what I held contained quite obviously the secret that destroyed the Knights Radiant. Ever since then, I have found lots of foreshadowing done in the epigraphs, and because of it, I have an entire document on my computer listing nearly every one and my thoughts on each, what they could even mean. And to think when I first started the Way of Kings (my first Brandon Sanderson book) I just started skipping the epigraphs. Also: I actually got this one! I didn't get the first one, but I did get a suspicion he would let himself die. I was proud of myself, for, like, a second before I realized that he was GONNA DIE.
-
Don't know if we will have references to them, exactly, but I mean, Mistborn Era 4 is all space opera-y. I think if there are any planets left that Brandon wants to showcase, that might be where it would happen. I think Brandon has way too much on his plate cosmere-related to write new stories for some of these other planets/Shards, so I think it is likely that they'll just end up being a part of what he already has on his plate.

Found this @Ookla the Prolific and @Kingsdaughter613. Apparently it's not much of an issue, though Bavadin has more female personas than male. As for Bavadin's gender... Doesn't sound like an answer to me. Who knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And while we're on the topic, are Bavadin's avatars kind of like a Legion thing? Like, some of Stephen's aspects were female, though I think the majority were male. Am I wrong to kind of see them as aspects, like Bavadin is splitting his/herself into her aspects? Or is Bavadin just making new people or something.
-
Very much so. And I do agree with @Ookla the Imperial. But yeah, there is some innate sense of very, very basic right and wrong that we acquire at a certain point in our childhood, maybe around eight years old, where we definitely by that point know that murder is wrong. Everyone has some degree of this accountability for very evil things, and, as aforementioned, we do call it the Light of Christ. Others would call it natural law. And so in a funny kind of way, I believe that not knowing the difference between good and evil is actually a protection. Then you can't be held as good or evil, seeing as you don't either. This is why animals, for example, are innocent, despite having the ability to "bad things". They're innocent, because they don't know any better. Just the same with a five-year-old and that cookie. He doesn't know any better. A whole new meaning to ignorance is bliss. Side note: This argument could be used against my religion by saying that by not believing in my religion, they are safer from doing evil things. True. They will still be accountable for other things, as they progress through their life, and the Judgment Day at the end of the world--we are judged according to what we did with what knowledge we had. Also it is a part of my religion anyways that eventually everyone is going to reach a pretty high understanding of right and wrong, whether in this life or the next. So there's no use avoiding it.

I am no philosopher... but I do have an opinion (by which I mean a religion). Yes, there's good and evil. Why? I don't know. I'm religious. So God? But that is not satisfactory, and so it is why I think it's just that perfect love for God and for others is what makes good good, and that which is against that is evil. But the act itself isn't necessarily good or evil, due to the accountability of the user. If a man does not truly understand that something like, say, lying is wrong (due to not 100% loving/respecting others enough to be honest), than he is not evil. Now, when he starts to understand why it is wrong, then the moment of truth comes. If he chooses to continue down that path, then he is more evil for doing so. If he, however, changes and stops lying, well, now that's good. Basically, what is good and what is evil are really just other words for pure love and not pure love. Whether a person is good or evil depends on how much he actually understands, and what he does with the understanding he has.

"Sure thing," Knight answered, "but we should probably stop for a hamburger along the way. I'm starving." As he spoke, he pulled on his wristbands, and laughed. "In a way, we're doing the world a favor, you know. What we do here."

Hello @Voice in my Head and welcome to the 17th Shard! Who is your favorite character in the cosmere?
-
A little thing I thought of. Essentially the gist of this is you choose an evil Stormlight Archive character and make a case for them. You set up a nice-sounding argument that would leave the reader like, "Oh, hey, maybe they aren't so bad after all." You can also make a case against a mostly good Stormlight Archive character, setting them up as some sort of secret villain. As a tip, do NOT mention any evil the evil person may have or any good the good person may have. You present the facts unfairly. Or fairly. Whatever you want. For example, I present to you a case for Odium. 1) He doesn't necessarily have an evil goal. It is Rayse’s ultimate goal to become the sole and most powerful god in the cosmere. But is this necessary evil? Not out of necessity, at least. It could be possible that Odium is just trying to take over the cosmere to try and make the cosmere a better place. But the other Shards wouldn't have it. Preservation just preserving things forever, Ruin just ruining things, Honor and his oaths (no matter what), Ambition… well, perhaps Odium has a good reason to believe all these clashing Intents are not good for the cosmere. He probably just wants to rule everything so he can to fix up the cosmere’s problems. I mean, he even says in a perfect world, he wouldn’t have had to kill his fellow Shards. 2) He can appear as a grandfatherly, kind, and reasonable old man. He manages to treat Dalinar with respect and kindness, so even if it was faked, it is still likely that there is some amount of kindness somewhere in his soul. There has to be. Plus, he even offers to be reasonable with Dalinar, and he sure seemed reasonable! Anyways, he can’t be all bad if he can appear as if he was everyone’s grandpa! 3) He has been severely corrupted by his Shard. Yes, I know he was not much of a nice man before choosing the Shard of Odium, and may have even had evil intentions before the Shattering even occurred. But, however, we can’t blame Rayse for exactly everything he has done. By this point, his Shard’s intent, Odium, has become who Rayse is, with some minor tweaks on the interpretation of the Shardic powers. Maybe the interpretation that Odium is passion and not just hatred was Rayse’s doing in an effort to redeem himself. Maybe Rayse really regrets taking up the Shard by now but there really isn’t anything he can do about it except let the hatred consume him. Maybe, in the end, Rayse will beat Odium by splintering himself in one last act of redemption. Conclusion: He's just a slightly confused and well-intentioned immortal god of passion that wants to save the cosmere from its disharmonious ways. He has kindness, reason, and hates destroying Shards as much as the next guy, but he is smart enough to know it must be done. Any evilness or corruptness? That's just his Shard's intent! He can't be directly blamed for that. Also guys do not destroy other people's arguments this is just for fun. Or for making a case for actually misunderstood characters. Anyways.

I, being younger, am very late to the party with Star Wars, obviously. I get to miss out on all the anticipation building for the original or real Star Wars trilogy. It is because of this I accidentally ended up liking the prequel trilogy. Now my family has disowned me and I live in a box because nobody will hire me (not actually). In seriousness, I'm actually kind of glad we get to go through this experience. I will tell you that I didn't find Stormlight Archive until not that long ago, and I was kind of sad I wouldn't ever be able to theorize about Oathbringer. No, I didn't get years after finishing Words of Radiance to explore every avenue, every possibility ever, to go down every road. I finished it, wondered "what's gonna happen next" and picked up the next book. So there's that.

I doubt this is what Brandon intended, but technically that WoB says that they wouldn't "automatically turn into" shades, while the other WoB says they "would be shades," because they are "the same thing." Maybe that's what he was talking about. Though that one was 2016 and the other one was 2014, so maybe he changed his mind since then. Same! For some reason I see it as being the opposite of Endowment, as in with Ambition you're going to aspire to growing powerful via killing others or something. Or maybe Ambition never set one up but there kind of is one via interacting with shades somehow.

Random unrelated question: Does the Vessel in any way change what the metal is able to do? Probably not. Just wondering if lerasium would be different from vinium or kelsierium. Like, can they even change it in any way? Just a little? EDIT: In the process of writing this I got thoroughly distracted and began writing a list of people I wish would Ascend so they could get a cool metal name. All cosmere. See below. I know. It's pointless.

Granted, you can magically build little structures (like in the game I assume you mean, Fortnite) and the materials are all cheese though. Your bane is you can only use the power when you're hungry. -
I won't and can't scientifically disagree with you, that is surely a reasonable way of looking at things. Now, I am religious and do not hold this view myself, though I do mostly understand this viewpoint. I find it interesting. I do definitely agree with the probability illusion, though. I'm just jumping in to share my point of view on free will, though you don't have to agree with it because there really isn't anything proven, just what I have faith will be proven. I believe that, first off, basically invisible matter that is "spirit." We are both our spirit (which is in the shape of our physical bodies) and our physical body. Our spirit must be connected with our nervous system somehow, especially concerning things with the brain. Now, the brain is still a great mystery in the precise mechanics of how it works. Most of it is a mystery with just a lot of theories. We don't even know why we yawn, we just have theories (used loosely, as they have in no way gotten to the point in the scientific method). Our spirit controls our body and is probably so connected with what we observe happening in the brain when we make decision. This is an interesting topic and I love learning about other ways to look at things.

Guessing Stormlight Book 5 title
Knight of Iron replied to KandraAllomancer's topic in Stormlight Archive
Let's notforget that these are named after in-world books and mostly only vaguely have any connection to the plot of the book. I don't think the title will be directly Szeth-related just like the Way of Kings has about... no connection with Kaladin. Words of Radiance has some connection to Shallan as she owned a copy, and Oathbringer, well, Rhythm of War could possibly be related to Eshonai or Venli, like it's a story book that their mom always read to them before nighttime. The in-world book has always appeared in the book, so could be possible. I don't care much for either of them enough to judge whether or not Rhythm of War would be a good bedtime story for them but it could be possible. I do suspect the name would be closely related to whatever it's about, like Words of Radiance was about the developing Knights Radiant, etc. By the way, I like @Honorless's Knot of Woes, though, and Kindred of Winds. I'll throw in some more options, like Knights of Winning. Knights of Worlds. Kingdom of Warriors. King of Ways. -
