  1. A deep rumbling sounded from just over the next ridge, accompanied by... Clicking. "The hells is that?" Kaeni said.
  2. "I meant after we finish exploring this place and head back to town."
  3. "I think we should probably rent a wagon," Vance replied, setting the book back on the shelf and taking another, "and take them back to my place sometime. I'm sure there's plenty else here for us to take too."
  4. "'S what I'm doing. There's a lot of magical theory here. Nothing out of the ordinary, but a collection like this..." Vance was impressed. How had a witch like that come across a collection like this?
  5. "It's probably not something super important," Vance explained, now flipping through pages, "but definitely something they use a lot."
  6. "Yessir." Vance started at the shelves, frisking through the old books.
  7. "Mostly. Just a bit shocked is all." He stood up and brushed off his pants, then looked around. "Well, at least one thing's for sure: there's something here in this room that they don't want us finding."
  8. "Urg. Yeah." Vance pushed himself up into a sitting position. "That was... weird."
  9. Vance had absolutely no way of guarding himself. He was already sweating from the exertion of focusing so much energy, and gathering a protective veil about his entire body would've been difficult even without that in so short a time. The darkness slammed into him, coursing across his body and tossing him to the floor. All in all, it didn't do much. He lay on the floor in a daze for a couple seconds. "The hell was that?"
  10. Vance, however, did not begin detecting magic. He was focusing far too hard on the pinprick of incredible power focused into his fingertip as he pressed it into the lynchpin. Resistance came immediately, pushing back against his energy - but not enough. Releasing the pent-up energy, he shattered the connection between realms, and the shadow realm blinked away instantly, leaving them back in the doorway of the room. "It worked!"
  11. "Just about..." Vance put the last bit of energy into his finger, then gestured Antin aside. "Alright. Here goes."
  12. Which one are you again?
  13. “Alrighty. That should help weaken it a little at least.” Vance started prepping his magical energy, pushing it into his fingertip. “Keep it up for now. I don’t know what would happen if I hit you with this on accident, but I doubt it’d be good.”
  14. Every male person with a chill personality and a non-humanoid pfp blends together on the shard for me
  15. "Great time as any to learn. Basically, this spot of magic that you're feeling is an intermediary between the physical world and the one we're in the right now. It keeps them connected so that you can access them from each other. Without it, that witch never would've been able to trap us in here without a full-on banishment spell." Vance started gauging the amount of energy put into it: less than he'd expected, but more than he'd hoped. "It also acts as a weak point: hit it hard enough and this whole place should shatter. 'Course it's not as easy as just throwing a fireball at it and calling it a day. It's a direct energy-to-energy attack that's required, which is... difficult, but not impossible. Just unintuitive." He looked at Antin. "You're absorbing a bit of it, right?"
