  1. “Gotcha. Can you try to imagine that feeling in other parts of your body? Your hands, your head…?”
  2. “Let’s start small. You say you absorb energy, right? What does that feel like?”
  3. “You will be able to. Soon. Hopefully.” Vance held up his left hand. “This was the magic one. I reallocated some of my excess life force to it to power up the slap; though I pulled it a little to make it harder to notice.”
  4. “Excellent idea!” Vance stood up, strode over to Antin, then slapped him in the face. Twice. One with each hand. “Pop quiz: which one had magic behind it?”
  5. Vance cracked his knuckles. “Well… out of context they make less sense. Lesson One was - given the choice - to never fight an opponent in their own domain. That could mean pretty much anything, ranging from a snowball fight against the kids in the treehouse to the likes of this witch here and her magical mansion. ”Lesson Two was to always control your energy output for any given situation. You never know how many tricks the enemy might have up their sleeve, so conserving your own power and techniques is critical. ”Lesson Three: Make time to breathe.” Vance sat down. “It’s good for your health. ”Lesson Four is kinda like the theory behind Two. Basically, never let your guard down in someone else’s domain. Quickest and easiest way to get murdered by an arrow trap. ”We’ll skip lesson five. That one’s not important… lesson six was Magical Energy 101, and Lesson Seven is right now.” Vance pointed at Antin. “Detecting magical energy.”
  6. To those of you who are Hollow Knight fans:

    Spoiler

I'm pretty far complete on my Switch HK game. Yet to beat P5 or AbsRad, but those are just about the last couple things left on my primary file.

Besides that, there are a few achievements I haven't gotten yet. Obviously both the Pantheon story endings, but also two others:

    • Beat the game with 100% completion in under 20 hours
    • Beat the game with 100% completion in Steel Soul

So guess what I've been doing today.

To those who did not deduce my meaning:

I’m speedrunning steel soul to 100%

I’ve got about a billion failed attempts under my belt that didn’t get so far as dream nail. This time around I got roughly 35% in just a couple hours because I’m going for upgrades and playing it safe instead of doing my regular speedrun thing. Hopefully this is it!

  7. "Alright. Thus begins Lesson Number Seven: How To Sense Magic Like a Pro." Vance gestured to... well, technically absolutely nothing. The floor, mostly. "Have a seat."
  8. "I meant that I'd teach you the basics right now, and if you get it then you can help me find the way out of here."
  9. Kaeni nocked an arrow onto her bowstring, a little nervous. She couldn't quite pinpoint why. Perhaps there was something in the air. "How long are you planning to stick around for once you get in?"
  10. "Hrmm, well..." Vance stopped, looking... quisitive. "Come to think of it, you're probably not likely to get a better control environment to learn that... so what'd'you say? Wanna learn how to detect magical energy? It takes years of practice but it's all uphill once you get the trick."
  11. "That's the hard part, 'specially since this witch lady clearly knew what she was doing with magical masking here..."
  12. "Yes and no." Vance didn't stop feeling around. "Yes in that I know how to in principle. No in the sense that the principle is that we have to find the lynchpin for this reality and break it, and frankly it could be just about anywhere."
  13. He started feeling around with his hands, stumbling about like a blind man. "We're in a layer dimension. It's kinda like a pocket dimension, 'cept instead of being completely detached to our universe it's laid directly over the top like a blanket. Takes quite a bit of magic to make one like this; all thorough and such."
  14. Vance tentatively stuck an arm into the room. Nothing. Both: nothing. Did he step beyond? Tell the others or make sure Antin was alright? He had a sneaking suspicion as to where he might have gone, though whether his or Quest's help would be most useful was the real question. What the hell. We agreed to pair off: let's keep that working at the very least. With that he took in a breath and stepped through the doorway, immediately being pulled into a plane of infinite darkness.
