  1. "Sure thing. Anyone could use it. That stone is solid magical energy. As long as you have any way to use magic whatsoever, then soaking in its power to use is as easy as breathing."
  2. "Not exactly exactly, but..." he pushed his lips to one side, "that's an aether stone. Big as they come. That's some serious magical power right there."
  3. "Most summoner types like her are real into it. All equations and formulas instead of finnicky spellcasting. Works consistently." Vance's eyes were still on the staff. "How did a witch like her get her hands on something like this...?"
  4. "...Fair enough." Vance still hesitated before reaching in.
  5. "I doubt her magic is tied to this thing. More likely it's just an extra-special magic stick she has on hand, just in case."
  6. "Only after we broke into her house. I guess the whole human sacrifice thing was a bit much, but..." Vance shrugged. "I mean, some part of this just doesn't sit right with me. Especially seeing as how I doubt we've seen the last of her."
  7. "Nah. Just at some point you start wondering if it's really okay to break into some witch's mansion and steal all her valuables."
  8. "It's probably safe," Vance replied, "but whether or not we should actually take it is the question."
  9. Vance met Antin in a space nearly identical to the room they had both been in mere moments ago, only with a misty blue fog layered overtop, wisping about lazily. A slew of boxes similar to those back in the mansion lined the walls, each lined with iron and trapped shut with a silver padlocks. The door was completely missing, leaving it to be wondered whether there was anything at all lying beyond this space of wood and mist. Most strikingly, however, was a stone lattice like twin vines snaking around each other in the center of the room. Standing up perfectly straight - floating, actually, an inch or two above the ground - within this encasing was a tall wooden staff topped with a perfectly diamond-shaped red gem. "Bingo," Vance said.
  10. "It'll feel..." Vance furrowed his brow. "You'll know it when you feel it."
  11. "Just focus your on and into your energy. Once you get a feel for it, just shift it to match the frequency you feel here."
  12. "The amount doesn't matter, so as long as you have any at all. Changing the overall frequency is just as simple for a small amount as it is for a large amount."
  13. "Last time the lynchpin was rigged to trap folks like us. They kinda made it work backwards, in a way. Instead of our essence being tied to this side and having to cross over manually, it forcefully tied our essence to that side to trap us there. Crossing back over would be difficult, so it was simpler just to break the break the connection that was tricking our forms into thinking we belonged there." Vance sat down in the center of the room, gesturing for Antin to do the same. "This time we have to resonate with the layer dimension in order to fit in there. That takes altering your soul's frequency: basically, changing how your magical energy circulates throughout your body."
  14. "There's never any telling what particular layer dimension someone might be using in any situation. Detecting it means you can discern the resonancy at which the dimension resides, then using the lynchpin you can allow yourself to cross over."
  15. "No point in finding the lynchpin if we can't activate it."
  16. "Oh, it's probably right about here." Vance gestured at an empty spot in the exact center of the room.
  17. "You're holding yourself back. I mean... I know you just started doing this. It took me months just to start detecting magic, but..." You're a natural at this, Vance finished in his head. Right now you're better at detecting magic than the vast majority of people, and with half as much training as I've done you'll have far surpassed me. If anyone can get this first try, it's you.
  18. Vance shrugged. "Yeah, but you're really never going to get a better chance to learn this kind of thing than out in the wild like we are now. Maybe you can do it, maybe you can't; you won't know until you try."
  19. I spent enough time on this to post it here as well: Also have some process drawings, plus 11:30 PM commentary:
  20. "Oh god, we're in a cult."
  21. "Not yet. We... we gotta..." Kaeni was totally hyperventilating, a hand on metal arm guy's stab wound. "Think. We gotta think." She turned to... Ran'at. His name was Ran'at. Think. Think. Was that tail venomous? Was there anything she could do about it if it was? How deep was the wound? How much was he bleeding? "Ra... Ran. Um - you..." She squeezed her eyes shut to focus. "Gods, I'm sorry. This is gonna hurt." Kaeni set her other hand ablaze. @PyroPhile
