A look back at Vyre's Knife after chapter 14
Honorless replied to Honorless's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Brandon always gave the impression that the color of the gem was important so your theory makes sense. Color, perhaps in a Cognitive sense, rather than chemical or crystalline structure. Also makes me wonder why certain colors of gemstones were associated with certain pairs of Surges...- 7 replies

Yes, Stormlight is specifically Honor's Investiture. Investiture was presumably distributed by the Highstorm even before Honor's arrival as the spren needed it, but the Investiture may or may not have been different back then. Stormlight was definitely distributed back during the times of the ancient Radiants, way before Tanavast's death.

So near the end of OB, we saw Jezrien getting stabbed and seemingly permanently killed. Many people wondered about the mechanism via which the knife worked and whether Jezrien was truly gone or had his soul captured so he couldn't reincarnate as Heralds were wont to do. The knife that Moash/Vyre used had a sapphire set into the pommel and the sapphire in question glowed during the deed. In the same book, we saw an Unmade getting trapped within a gemstone, so we knew that it was a strong possibility. People also noted the similarity with Hemalurgy. Of course people asked Brandon to confirm certain things: 1) Jezrien's soul was captured so it couldn't be reborn (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/377/#e12261) 2) The mechanism is similar to Hemalurgy (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/256/#e8665 , https://wob.coppermind.net/events/258/#e8774) 3) Sapphire, which is specifically linked with Jezrien and the Windrunners, was used specifically against Jezrien here (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/262/#e8798) And in chapter 14, we are told that the Fused could also be captured in gemstones: “They imprisoned some of the Unmade in these, Leshwi,” Raboniel said. “How close do you think they are to discovering they could do the same for us? Can you imagine it? Forever imprisoned in a gemstone, locked away, able to think but unable to ever break free?” A) So, Jezrien could still be rescued, reminding y'all just in case you forgot all about him. But in which case, so could Moelach.... (And may I remind you, they just chucked the gemstone he was imprisoned in into the ocean. And may I also remind you that Nazh was capable of retrieving Shallan's sketchbook from the bottom of the ocean after her ship sank) Hmm, I wonder... how was Re-Shephir imprisoned back then by some historical Lightweaver? Was she also captured in a gemstone? How'd she get out? B ) This mechanism might work against other Cognitive entities. It works with spren, Unmade, Fused, Heralds, so it might also work with the Returned or Divine Breath, with Seon & Skaze, with Shades (is that how Nazh's Shade gun worked? Heyyyyy... firespren flamethrower, anyone?) C) Sapphire was used against Jezrien, so was the King's Drop targeted because of this? Odium did say he was seeing to it as an additional safeguard for something unlikely to happen or something like that, iirc (could someone check?). Was there more to the King's Drop than just being a perfect gemstone? D) If the mechanism is similar to Hemalurgy, what happens if you, you know, go through the entire process? After the stealing comes the grafting. What would happen if Vyre's knife is stabbed into someone again? Would Jezrien take over their body, Fused style or possession style? Would they get some of Jezrien's attributes?

Those are good points, @Stormwalker but on the other hand, why was the Stormfather chosen by Honor to absorb his Cognitive Shadow? How was Honor able to pass on his duties, like creating Honorspren to the Stormfather before dying? How come the Highstorm distributed not just crem but Stormlight, Honor's Investiture? The Highstorm already existed, and so did the Stormfather, in a different form. The Nightwatcher might've been created by Cultivation, so maybe Honor did something similar too. It could be that the Sibling was created by Honor.

F-Bendalloy stores nutrition & calories, it might not necessarily store hydration. Hydration storage would allow a Sand Master to perform Mastery for a longer duration of time. The ability to control more ribbons does not come from more Investiture or more water but from repeated Overmastery as we saw Kenton discover.

I very much doubt that abolishing slavery would really do all that much with the existing social structure, the lower Nahn have barely any rights and could become indentured labourers, slaves in all but name. How is the slavery economics doing currently? Entire regions blocked off, one of them both a major supplier and buyer (Alethkar). On the other hand, the ongoing conflicts and labour shortages might be things that they could exploit.

Firemoss is a bit weird with how easily it catches fire but I think that might just be the result of Rosharan flora and fauna having a symbiotic relationship with spren.

Good to officially meet you, @Doneil! Happy to hear you feel welcome in the Shard!

The spears that the shanay-im used seemed to have an aluminium core running through it, coming out the tip as the spearhead

Hmm they are both said to hate each other. On the other hand, both are individuals with dubious morality. I'm of two minds on this.

Who else is thinking Worldhopper Jasnah after reading this chapter?

1) The simplest Fused weapon against us isn’t truly a fabrial, but instead a metal that is extremely light and can withstand the blows of a Shardblade. This metal resists being Soulcast as well; it interferes with a great number of Radiant powers. Fortunately, the Fused seem unable to create it in great quantities—for they equip only themselves, and not their average soldiers, with these wonders. Aluminium! Also, sounds like Brandon won 2) hmm, just a note, inhaling, exhaling, swallowing to access Investiture. I suppose it's the easiest Physical parallel to show Spiritual consumption 3) Mink's hyper paranoid reaction reminded me of Vin a bit 4) Hmm so much of what Kaladin and Shallan and Dalinar have discovered of their abilities have been instinctual. With actual study... here's hoping for some min-maxing! 5) Finally Jasnah makes an appear-gah! Wit! And they talk... Edit: Navani, please don't give the shippers fuel 6) Ishar's forces are behind enemy lines, who are sandwiched between him & the coalition over in Emul. I think this might be where the Skybreakers who joined Odium under Nale's guidance strike. Nale still listens to Ishar. Edit: called it! Also battle lines, currently the Fused and co control Alethkar, Iri has joined them, the current force in Emul is presumably the same that ravaged it to get through the south central Rosharan states to Thaylenah. There's also Kharbranth technically, sort of +)Why are the Honorspren withholding their support? What did Restares say to them? 7) welp, Mink for general! 8) more Dustbringers (as promised by Brandon), sounds like they might all be troublemakers, maybe all on the Diagram's side 9) Go Jasnah! Abolish slavery! Also, yeah, Dalinar's really monarchist. Let other Bondsmiths crop up, let them be good leaders, and let them not be Kholins! 10) Finally, the Heralds! Also enter Navani's theological crisis! Ah, Wit being gentle, good, good. Hmm, they still prefer to think of Braize/Damnation and Ashyn/Tranquiline Halls as separate planes of existence rather than planets, or did they simply not connect the dots? Finally, full confirmation that Ishar forged the Oathpact. Oh, deep Realmatics, how much did they know back in Ashyn? A lot, one would assume, given they went nuclear, so to speak. How much of that knowledge still exists on Ashyn? Wonder if the Silence Divine might connect with the Stormlight Archive a bit more deeply, it's set in the same time as the back 5. 11) So Dalinar with current Stormfather who merged with Tanavast's Cognitive Shadow vs Ishar with his Honorblade, will we get it, folks?! Am I smelling a set-up? 12) Okay, what are the Shin doing? Sounds like religion gone out of control, which Brandon does experiment with a lot. Only Jezrien, Nale & Taln's Honorblades are not in their control, and speaking of, we still don't know who has the last one...

Ah, got it. Shouldn't be too much of a problem, I think, most Worldhoppers probably have access to an Invested Art and the rest probably have access to some tricks to blend in. The Daysiders do have set market hours, called Taisha standard time. I'm sure the Scadrians would still enjoy the novelty.

Kaladin and Shallan’s stagnation and continued regression
Honorless replied to Vasherin's topic in Stormlight Archive
Real life people stagnate and regress. This just felt more realistic to me. Character struggles are just as interesting to me as magical showdowns. -
Why do you say that about Selish spark-of-life specifically? All Shardworlders would seem to have more than drabs but less than a Nalthian with a vibrant, healthy Breath. They'll just think their Breath isn't as robust. Taldain people, from both Dayside and Darkside would need to acclimatize their sleep patterns for regular day/night cycles. Sel and Roshar's gravity means they would need to acclimatize themselves on other planets, plus Roshar's weather is different too, but that'd probably make them happier about weather elsewhere. Scadrians would finally see moon(s)! But their planet's pretty standard post-Catacendre. Final Empire era Scadrians must've gotten a surprise with blue skies, stars and green plants.
