Sixth Incarnation of Pandora
Honorless replied to imriel452's topic in Sanderson Curiosities & Unpublished Works
Brandon reads part of the Sixth Incarnation of Pandora here: at 1:04:05 -
Man, flashback to Way of Kings. Shallan getting haunted by the Cryptics was so intriguing! Hmm... it's constantly being hinted that Formless might be less dormant than the Three realize, and is the one working with the Ghostbloods, a frightening notion but possibly yet another red herring. Ooh Pattern was a spren scholar of humanity! Have I mentioned I want a booklet on spren culture & society yet? It does seem odd that Cryptics, the spren of mathematical truths Bond Lightweavers who're about personal truths. Truthwatcher spren, sorry, I keep forgetting we have a name now, Mistspren, who, at least from what we've seen so far, seem to be about personal truths, bond Truthwatchers who seek universal truths. I wonder what the clouds pointing at the distant, cold sun of the Cognitive Realm might represent. Finally, how spren manifest stuff from the Physical! They take the souls of objects from the physical world, then make the object’s bead on the other side reflect its physical nature. The Physical object remains unaffected. So it is in fact the same as what we see in Secret History. I think Lightweavers and Elsecallers could probably do this too instead of just making the surrounding beads come together to mimic the shape of the chosen physical object. Actually, couldn't anyone, or possibly anyone who's Invested, do this? Ah, yes the false information packet method. It's become rather famous, especially after Tyrion used it in Game of Thrones. I really hope it's not Ishnah, I rather liked her! I liked Vathah too though, on the other hand, I can't see him being a Ghostblood. Beryl seems too obvious. So... will we come back to Ishnah? Wonder what the obsidian ground of Shadesmar is made of? I can't believe it's actual obsidian. (And the crystalline plants too) Hmm, does taking a chunk of the obsidian reflecting a river on the Physical affect the river in any way? "the stone here was eager to be something else and could easily be persuaded to change" hmm... something like pure Cognitive material? Beryl is very interesting, instinctive Lightweaving and skill with Soulcasting. "Then again, the way that Lightweaving worked for Truthwatchers seemed different—even if one disregarded whatever Renarin was." okay, we need to see (standard) Truthwatcher Lightweaving. Also, once again, how do the Windrunners deal with the Skybreakers that have Division? Formless... is a he? The hurry up and wait mentality that soldiers can get stuck in... I really like the character study thing that Rhythm of War is doing. I don't think anything's stretched out at all, like some of the reviews said, at least so far. I'm really liking this book, it might take the place of my most liked Stormlight book! I'm absolutely loving Shallan and Kaladin in this book, as much as I'm loving Navani and Venli, who's book this one's supposed to be. Oh my, wonder where the Reachers went off to *thinks back to Venli's chapter* hehe Hmm... using Szeth in a situation like this. I mean, we as readers know enough about Szeth to be relatively comfortable with their decision, but how could Dalinar and Navani be comfortable making this decision? Ah, one is never too old to find themselves! Also, Navani ships again, this time Sebarial x Palona! (it totally counts as shipping, and by "again" I'm referring to Jasnah & Wit rumours. Hahaha, nah I'm just trying to annoy people who're annoyed by shipping!). Navani and Jasnah's relationship is quite interesting. A sealed-off room with the Tower's replica, which itself has this very room and miniature replica (how cute), it seems Navani comes to the same conclusion as many Sharders, that the Tower structure was malleable. The answer could simply be the Surge of Cohesion of course but the living Tower hypothesis can also be supported by this. I did suspect Navani's critic was more likely to be a spren than one of the Sleepless (minor Dawnshard spoilers) Their thinking is quite al bit inhuman and they sound resentful of humans too. But most spren were fine with what Navani is doing. So, my suspicion is still on Odium's forces a bit, the timing is just too convenient. Navani seems to have come to the same conclusion. Hmm.. Jasnah's worry makes sense. There are far too many secret societies on Roshar who probably knew of perfect gems. Some are with the spren as well in their banks. Hah, Adolin is bringing back Maya closer and closer Recap of what we know of spren society so far: Honorspren and Stoneward spren, sorry, Peakspren have their own cities, as do Highspren and Inkspren I think. The Peakspren apparently have different nationalities, with completely different views towards resurgence of the Knights Radiant. Cryptics only have one city iirc. Cultivationspren and Reachers seem to not have their own cities, often wander around or live in mixed spren cities, Mistspren seem to be the same imo. No idea about Ashspren but them and Peakspren do seem to live in mixed spren cities sometimes, we saw them in doing so in Celebrant, Inkspren and Highspren do that too but they're usually more reclusive. Honorspren and Cryptics are not well liked, because the former tried to conquer Shadesmar and the latter are considered weird. Honorspren don't like Highspren or Inkspren. It seems Ashspren are the angriest at humanity, actively seeking revenge. The Reachers are trying something different. Honorspren and Peakspren are divided, many are still angry but quite a few are Bonding, the rest are determined to isolate themselves from humanity, Inkspren are also isolating themselves. Cultivationspren, Cryptics and Mistspren have been trying to initiate Bonds for a while. Highspren never stopped Bonding. Pattern is still a cutie! Mraize is still a creep! The cube is alive! "someone ought to tell that one what a protective cup is used for on our side.…" oh no... A new Deadeye, from Nale and the Skybreakers' killings? It's a Cryptic... could it be Tien's? Shallan's memories from before her mother's death! She's handled a cube like this before. So is Beryl the spy or did Mraize see through the ploy? Ah, Veil also thinks Mraize might be feeding them wrong info and misleading them. Veil and Radiant open up to Adolin about Shallan's fear of being fake and being abandoned when people find out the truth about her! Shallan (the facet, one of the Three, not the whole person) is retreating. Formless is getting closer to the surface. Marat or Tukar? Is Marat still occupied by Odium? Tukar is under Tezim aka Ishar's rule. Not good. How did they get into Shadesmar? Does this relate back to Dalinar and the Mink's plan to advance on the occupied Emuli front, which hinges on Tukar to also oppose Odium's forces, which is really dubious as Ishar's crazy. How did Ishar send them here, did he get back his Honorblade? No, they seem off, some other method. Uh-oh, they're following them. Hello again, Notum. Oh, they exiled him. I agree with Adolin here, they're simply ignoring anyone who's trying to argue differently and there's a lot of words I'd have liked to have with them. They're being very stubborn and unreasonable. Many Radiants died for generations to protect all of Roshar from Odium, the Recreance too was done for the same reason. Most of it is fear, rather than hatred, imo: spren were rather unaccustomed to the concept of death applying to them, plus many seem to believe that they just linger to slowly wither away into nothing whereas rather than going into the Beyond. You can argue against the hatred: these are not the same people, they did nothing to them, why the Recreance happened, what Odium might do to them after winning but that fear, how do you argue against that? Also, I'm starting to suspect that Restares has their ear. Another Brand of the Fused: the Deepest Ones, Stoneward parallel, these ones use Cohesion to treat stone like malleable liquid. "The Deepest Ones had smooth skin, no hair, and barely any carapace—just shells over their heads and genitals. This put their vibrant patterns on display across the full lengths of their sinuous bodies." Carapace protecting genitalia, the Parsh are really starting to remind me of the Turians from Mass Effect. Venli is fascinated by them, as she also has access to Cohesion as a Willshaper. Another Brand of the Fused: the Flowing Ones: Edgedancer parallel, use Abrasion to reduce friction to slide around, we saw them in Oathbringer. Hmm... the description of Cohesion from Raboniel: "The Surge of Axial Connection—the Surge that binds the smallest pieces of all objects to one another. The Surge that holds us together. The makay-im can meld their essence into the essences of other things, intermingling their axi. All things are mostly emptiness, though we cannot see that it is so. A stone, like a mind, exists to be filled by thought and Investiture.” sounds like Physically, they manipulate molecular bonds. If that is true then they are joining Illumination as a potentially OP ability when they gain more scientific knowledge. If they can mess with molecular bonds then they can potentially chemically alter substances and transfer energy between molecules. (quickly, someone create a topic in RoW lore & mechanics ! ) Also, Raboniel is pretty cool. She confirms that Adhesion is the missing Surge but says it's not a "true Surge" as it's only of Honor and not both Honor and Cultivation. Her views on Honor, Cultivation and Odium are reminiscent of what Odium claimed in Oathbringer: a god of the people, that he alone feels. Kaladin's chapter "Understanding" is a small one in size, but big in heart.

Adolin talking to Kaladin about the thrill (not that Thrill) of competition and how it's different from taking enjoyment from hurting others. I'm really enjoying the dynamic between these two since OB. Adolin totally sounds like an Elsecaller here, being the best one can be... Haha, they still haven't figured out Zahel. He had given Adolin a Hallandren coin. Oh wow, the Ryshadium are very intelligent horses And now Adolin sounds like an Edgedancer... Ooh Adolin's sword collection! I've always loved the look of the punchy stabby swords: think knuckleduster but pointy, I dunno what they're called irl We'll see the Stump again (an older woman on an adventure! About time fantasy did this! Looking forward to Rothfuss' promise to deliver the same... whenever that might be), and the Stoneward is Iriali & very free-spirited, and an Edgedancer (the same one from the preview chapters) whose religious views are very interesting. More Vathah and Ishnah, I'd like to see more of Gaz and Red too, but the former hasn't even made an appearance yet. Huh, thought Stargyle would be a cameo, was surprised when he was chosen to accompany Shallan & Adolin but he got switched (conveniently!) with one of the newer Lightweavers who's under suspicion for being with the Ghostbloods and killing Ialai but I don't know, seems like a possible red herring. Why, hello there, Felt Even Adolin is wary of Jasnah, wonder what will happen if he finds out what Jasnah intended to do to Renarin in Thaylen City. Soulcasting is how the Alethi armies maintained their military might, so it makes sense that Jasnah is concentrated on that. It's a valuable commodity: an army marches on its stomach. Shallan is the most talented at illusions and wants them to be spies, Jasnah seems to have been careful enough to not undermine her. Shallan's accidental Soulcasting: blood, fire, crystal, is there more to it (looks at Ten Essences chart) or is she just bad at control? I'm really starting to dislike Dalinar's controlling, monarchical, domineering attitude. It seems the Dustbringers' affiliation with the Diagram is quite visible. Their spren are among the ones most angry at humans for the Recreance. Finally, Adolin's inner thoughts after finding out who exactly the Blackthorn was and what he did. I've waited long to see at least some consequences. And now I'm thinking of Willshaper for Adolin... from his fashion to his free-thinking and making his own path, being his own man and such control over himself, perhaps a touch of Dustbringer too... He always tries to be honest with himself, he could be a very good Lightweaver too... He's fine with his own choices, not wanting to live up to the ideals of some spren. He wants to be all of the things. And there's Maya..... There's a lot going on with Adolin. So the one that the Oathgate spren called the parent was the Sibling. The Stormfather and his Bondsmith, Dalinar were the ones to convince them to start operating again. Nohadon was the Sibling's Bondsmith intensifies! The steps from the Oathgate in the Cognitive Realm are named after him. We've suspected Melishi to have been the Sibling's Bondsmith too, since "one Bondsmith was in constant accompaniment of Urithiru" and he was the sole Bondsmith during the False Desolation and the Recreance, and now the Sibling is called a Deadeye. Basically, I'm fully expecting a Sibling Bondsmith to revive the Tower, but who? "The tower was the same color the sky turned in Shadesmar when a Highstorm was passing over Roshar." Hmm... further support that Urithiru is the Sibling. How else would the Tower be as Invested? The Ryshadium are a bit different in Shadesmar too Isasik the mapmaker, hehe That reminds me, where's Unyielding Fidelity? I expected to see it in the map (another Sea of Lost Lights map from Nazh!) Ah, it'd be between the two maps, that's unfortunate. But plenty of interesting stuff on this map too. More spren interactions! With Mistspren and Peakspren we now know all the names. Congrats to those who guessed the Peakspren were the Stoneward spren, sorry to those who guessed Keenspren were the Truthwatcher spren. Mistspren appearance is really interesting, I wonder what they represent. Hmm... Cultivationspren appearance is strange too, now that I think about it. Pattern is adorable. Oh wow, some spren have their own cities, some have their own countries that means that the same type of spren can have different nationalities! This is fascinating! "Fused to the east (around Cultivation's Perpendicularity), strange things in Shinovar (no idea), Honorspren acting uppity (something to do with Restares?)" Syl being a total bro. Jasnah can Soulcast medicine... wow. Kharbranth has stethoscopes too, I shouldn't be surprised but I was. Kaladin has found a sort of peace here. Heh, the Rosharans shall now know the common cold! Teft's spren was Phendorana!? I like Hesina, hope she gets a chapter or interlude too. heh, they still can't quite wrap their minds around the concept of another world as other planets. Shallan still seems to think of off-world as beyond Shadesmar, though it would be a bit difficult to conceptualize and admit for modern Rosharans. Huh, so the Ghostbloods are looking for Ba-Ado-Mishram. The Heralds Nalan and Kalak were present during her Binding, note that it happened after the Aharietiam. Haha, bad drawings of Adolin trigger Shallan it seems. I like Radiant and Veil, even independent of Shallan, as their own characters. Kaladin talks a bit about being depressed. Kaladin is, no surprise here, absolutely awesome. Kaladin is as much a doctor as he is a soldier and it looks like he might become a psychologist. He's found a new purpose, where he's needed, where he has experience, where he can help! OMG, other Shards!!! Invention (perhaps the one who is hiding and just wants to survive? Same as Wisdom? Harmony wasn't able to contact them again), Whimsy (apparently wasn't of much help), Mercy (worried him for some reason), Valor (she actually likes Hoid). Harmony and Endowment talked. Harmony just learned of Devotion & Dominion's demise & Splintering. Ambition and Odium apparently did not clash alone, Mercy was there too and the fight left a scar in the Spiritual Realm somehow! He's disturbed by the effects on Threnody (we need Dust Brigade to release already!). Autonomy and her Avatars remain hidden from him. No mention of Cultivation, perhaps she is hidden from him too and/or perhaps he didn't try to reach her in the Rosharan system with Odium active. *starts counting* Ambition, Devotion, Dominion, Honor, Cultivation, Odium, Preservation, Ruin, Autonomy, Endowment, Invention, Whimsy, Mercy, Valor... so two other Shards are also hidden. Wisdom might be one other, which would leave just one other. Invention, Wisdom (assuming the two arr not the same, the last one (or two, if Wisdom and Invention are the same) might refer to the Shard that is not on a planet (though Ambition isn't either, for the most part. Ooh nor Autonomy, sort of) unless of course that WoB was referring to the same Shard who was hiding and just wanted to survive, which could be either of these three. Harmony realizes the danger Odium poses and wants to take action. He also understands his motive: to be the sole god in the Cosmere, to remain Odium by Splintering the other Shards rather than absorbing them and changing him, and as Shards are essentially infinite he doesn't need power. He thinks that Odium is not being controlled well by its Vessel, and we now know that Rayse is somewhat in conflict with the Intent of his Shard, so he's not off the mark but Rayse isn't nearly as warped by Odium's Intent as Harmony suspects, the two still conflict, so he's correct that he isn't a perfect Vessel. Harmony also says that Odium's Investiture would remain and gain sentience even if Rayse is gone, many of us do suspect that Rayse might get killed in book 5 and the wider conflict as well as the Shard of Odium itself would come to the forefront in the back 5, this might support that theory. Harmony is looking for a champion. I'm thinking Kelsier: he was Connected to Ruin and held Preservation for a time.

You sure? Just in case... if you change your mind halfway through I'm putting it in a spoiler box Edit: Ah, I didn't see EK had already obliged you

It's easy enough to guess who this is from! Shallan in warriors' garb, we need a drawing! Hmm... wonder which magic system Mraize's cube is from... Also all the Radiant spren drawings as promised! Wow, uh guess we know who the Truthwatcher spren are now and we may have met them before already Honorspren hate Highspren and Inkspren the most, due to their unbending nature. They dislike Cryptics much less but are wary of them all the same. Looking forward to seeing more spren culture! Ooh the Lightweaver team structure! They call themselves the Unseen Court... ugh, the Windrunners need a cool name too, dammit! Hmm... the High Court? Probably not, what with the Highspren... and Teft. Kaladin is now the most eligible Alethi bachelor, lol

I have to say, the interludes between part 1 & 2 took my breath away. We've already read the Syl interlude. Syl tries to understand Kal's depression and asks Dalinar for advice, realizing that she does understand, to some extent. Syl also delivers some burns to the Stormfather. Sja-Anat and Odium's relationship was interesting to observe, as well as her perspective on the world given her nature and what exactly she's trying to do, and why and how. She's considering Mraize's deal. Her thoughts on the Sibling are certainly interesting. It seems the Sibling really is the Tower of Urithiru itself. Sja-Anat confirms that the Sibling is a child of both Honor and Cultivation, and calls him... "cousin". And we get our first glimpse of how well the Intents of Honor, Cultivation and Odium fit. Odium is about feeling passionate about something, arguing against things you don't agree with, questioning the existing status-quo, standing against the wrong, becoming better by questioning things and by acknowledging the parts of yourself you do not like to transform yourself into something better, allowing yourself to like and dislike things, dispute against moral majority and group-think, hating injustices... Odium is the spirit of conflict, of dissent, of disagreement, of discord, of anger, of defiance, of disapproval, of protest and opposition, of differences. Odium isn't evil but the ability to discern evil from good: Odium is integral, and slots right in with Honor. Growth begets conflict and conflict begets growth, Odium slots right in with Cultivation. It's just like Preservation and Ruin, pieces of a whole. Taravangian's interlude reads like the turning point like Kaladin at end of Way of Kings or Dalinar at the end of Oathbringer imo. Also Battar is still in Kharbranth and appears more sane than the other Heralds, making Taravangian even more distrustful of her. The Part 2 epigraphs, ohmygodguys, the letters continue....

Is this just for chapters 1-19 for those who didn't read the preview chapters or the first interludes as well?
