Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Honorless replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
"That can be arranged" the Nightwatcher purred, "if you take it off first..." You refuse, naturally and make to leave, when suddenly"such impertinence" the Nightwatcher's voice rang out, low and dangerous,"few have ever dared to turn away from me" her voice made goosebumps appear on your skin. "But I may yet overlook that, for even though oth-" she suddenly lunges for your face, her hundreds of arms dragging her body towards you in a burst of speed, a terrifying thing to behold. You almost freeze in terror, but flinch just enough that her hands merely graze across the skin on your face (but not the skin of your face, of course). That contact was enough to make adrenaline course through your veins, you turned and you ran like you had never run before in your life. You turn to look behind you as you run, a mistake, as you behold the even more terrifying vision of the Nightwatcher using her multitude of arms to scurry from tree to tree above you, each arm grabbing branch after branch and weaving and coiling through the trees towards you. You run even faster. You can feel your lungs burning, but like Fleet before the Stormfather, you kept running and running and running. Laughter behind you, but you don't turn to look behind you. "Is this what you wish for, masked one? To keep running?" her voice drifted across the woods, as though the trees themselves had spoken. "Granted" , her voice rang out. You stopped running, stopped moving even. You start sucking, yet try as you might you could not get your body to move. "your previous wish is granted". How did she do that?, you wondered. You could feel a breeze poking at your back, before you realized that the thing poking at your back wasn't a breeze. Terror, you experienced true terror at that moment. "Your bane..." a voice smooth as silk called out,"is that in order for that to happen, you must keep running" . Elsewhere, @ShadowLord_Lith is experiencing nearly as much terror as you, as he suddenly starts running and running and running, unable to stop. You vile trickster, you curse, and you curse and you curse, as dawn comes and goes, and a new evening approaches. The smell of something delicious wafts towards, making your stomach knot uncomfortably in hunger pangs. "Just decide to show me your face", the Nightwatcher's hands caress you, "and you can move again", she idly points towards a buffet table of twisted branches of living trees, on which rested clay utensils containing the most mouth-watering dishes. I wish for the power to weave people's Connections -
Welcome to the Shard, @burns1066! Hmm, post this topic on General Brandon Discussion, I think, you'll get more responses there There are some threads on interesting names: the second one is only slightly related, but I think you'll find it interesting nonetheless
-
I'm surprised to find a fellow Worm fan here! I don't think there are many on the Shard who know of it, except maybe those who came over from Reddit or are Reckoners fans...? Yeah, I'm in if this is still open Edit: just saw that you last visited in 2017...

Counterparts not as in by Realmatic mechanics. Just that one does something that corresponds to what the other does. The Unmade may have been unmade for specific purposes by Odium

How do you pronounce the names of the various Cosmere characters or locations? Any unusual personal pronunciations?
-
Well, Dumbledore being gay never threw me off. Apparently that was seen as very controversial, judging by the sheer amount of memes.

ideals Who created the Ideals of the Knights Radiant?
Honorless replied to Honorless's topic in Stormlight Archive
That was never under doubt But we've deviated enough Why are these words so rigid? Where were they taken from if they were the inspiration for Way of Kings, rather than Way of Kings being the inspiration for them. To note: I'm not saying there wasn't a first oath before, just that it may have been different than this one- 52 replies

Granted. The Nightwatcher hurls you into space. Your body revolves around the Earth, thereby completing your wish. My wish: Edit: oops, sorry @Truthless of Shinovar didn't see your response there -
ideals Who created the Ideals of the Knights Radiant?
Honorless replied to Honorless's topic in Stormlight Archive
We don't know much, but here's how I see it: I don't know about the Bondsmith Oaths, on one hand: they belong to the same Order and have the same attributes and Surges. On the other hand: the Godspren are vastly different from one another. Nightwatcher, in particular is to Cultivation what Stormfather is to Honor. Then again, Dalinar's oaths exemplify both honor (bring men together) and cultivation (rise each time a better man). The Stormfather is not a Honorspren. He was created by Adonalsium to be a part of the natural ecosystem of Roshar. He was Invested further by Honor when he arrived on Roshar though. Honor was originally responsible for creating Honorspren but he later gave that duty to the Stormfather, slowly giving him more and more power. Now onto my conjecture: this is why Windspren were called lesser cousins to Honorspren. The Honorspren were basically Windspren before this The idea of 'Honor' also has many cultural connotations and Tanavast did interpret them as part of his Intent. Honor is about being bound by rules: Surgebinding as a magic system is of Honor. Some of the Nahel Bond capable spren lean more towards Cultivation, but the system itself is of Honor. The oaths are somewhat natural to Nahel Bonds in their general idea but seem to be more up to interpretation by both the parties: Radiant and spren. The First Ideal is more particular in its wording across all the Orders "Life Before Death, Strength Before Weakness, Journey Before Destination", but the rest can be sworn differently: as we see with Kaladin, Teft and Lopen- 52 replies

ideals Who created the Ideals of the Knights Radiant?
Honorless replied to Honorless's topic in Stormlight Archive
@Calderis, the quote you mentioned seems to indicate that the Honorblade he is holding is among the two that went missing That just added to the confusion I thought Szeth was given the Honorblade? But then again why would they give an Honorblade to him and then exile him after branding him "Truthless"? He could have simply taken it... That does make more sense Do we know when Nale took back his Honorblade? He did actually join his Order, rather than just grant them patronage and was said to be alone in that regard. So he may have been utilizing an actual Shardblade for a long while before getting his Honorblade back during the time period within the books. We know the other one was definitely Taln's though, @The traveller, it only went missing after he reappeared on Roshar with it, in his broken state of mind (if that is what you were asking)- 52 replies

I don't think they were real entities, only religious myth. They are from Elantris They were supernatural enemies of Jaddeth in the doctrine of the Derethi, as the souls of men who rejected Jaddeth.

They did swear to the Oathpact: that they stay on Braize, and while they are there, the Fused are also bound there I don't believe they had to swear anything to get access to Surgebinding. The Honorblades were given to them for the purpose of fighting in the Desolations, that is Oath enough. The Stormfather only calls them out for breaking the Oathpact and Syl notes the Honorblades as "monstrous" because bearing them does not require one to swear any Ideals. They got the Honorblades after becoming Heralds, for which they had go through Proving Day, that was all. No oaths were necessary to bear the Honorblades, their access point to Surgebinding. Are you suggesting the Honorblades acted differently for the Heralds? We know that is not true when Brandon elaborated that the lack of Bonds is the reason why the Honorblades require more Stormlight. The fact that the Heralds did not need to refill via virtue of their direct connection to Honor was also a function of the Honorblades themselves. The Shin and Szeth, in particular, didn't use that function because they didn't know of it. Also, it was a matter of what he believed: that was why he needed 10 heartbeats to summon it.- 52 replies

But it has been mentioned that the Honorblades required no oaths. Why are the words so exact? It must have become solidified somehow- 52 replies

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Honorless replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
"Oh my little hopeful petitioner, my silly little petitioner...." the Nightwatcher croons, cradling your face in her many, many hands before tearing it off your skull, "Granted! A twisted copy of the Masque of the ShadowLord that protects the wearer from my curses, so long as they never take it off, molded to your wishes" she looks down at you, writhing on the ground, "and just like the Masque, this too shall reflect my curses to the face that my petitioners wear as they come to me: yours. Yours will be the burden to bear their curses, as you wished, twice over." She takes your hand to help you stand, then hands over the mask of your face, "feel free to hand it to a petitioner of your choice, to protect them from me and bear their burden yourself, little one. We shall call it The Rueful Masque" She looks at you as you try not to sob, as the salt of your tears burn your exposed flesh, "but let it not be said that I am heartless! You may compel the wearer of your masque to take it off. If that happens, then their curses become theirs alone and you are freed from that burden. And no one may tell the difference between the Masque of the ShadowLord and the Rueful Masque" she smiles. @Truthless of Shinovar, you currently have the Masque of the ShadowLord @ShadowLord_Lith, hope you don't take it badly, it's all in good fun @Llstml, you did technically ask for a copy of the Masque of the ShadowLord I wish for the ability to create a simulation of the real world, within which, while it is activated, time will pass at an accelerated pace, without aging anyone in it, so that one can see the result of their actions without causing havoc in the actual world -
Welcome to the Shard, @VinDiesel! Nice pun Narratively, reading Warbreaker before Words of Radiance gives the best experience because it dives into the history of certain characters that appear there. I should warn you, that novel is noted to be quite slow for a longer duration than other Cosmere works. @Doombrigade is from Israel, I believe

Not Oaths per se, they needed to get into a certain mindset and swear to it, if the spren approved then the Bond worked- 52 replies

Agree with Karger's interpretation. As we also see in Scadrial with 'Ironeyes', some figures just become culturally associated with something negative as people forget the original stories. On Roshar, we already know that to be the case: with Vorinism's stance on visiting the Nightwatcher as well as conflating the Nightwatcher with the Unmade, Chemoarish. I'm with the counterpart to Sja-Anat theory, one modifies men, the other spren

Even the Lightweavers spoke the First Oath, we just missed when Shallan spoke it in her childhood. Then onwards they don't have any Oaths, only Truths. I think, since the First Oath is codified... Well if the organization of the Knights Radiant decided to codify it after the conflict between Nohadon and Alakavish, their collective belief may have influenced the spren enough to solidify the First Oath, kind of like we saw in Geranid's Interlude in WoK.- 52 replies

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Honorless replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Well, since you asked... The Nightwatcher looks at you in surprise then guffaws. "People have asked me to not curse them before but no one has ever asked me to do as you asked. Some have also asked me to not curse the next wish-maker as their own boon, noble as the Heralds themselves, wouldn't you say?" The Nightwatcher takes your face in her hands, literally, takes your face in her hands, tearing it off. "And you can help them!", she continues as you scream, crafting the skin of your face into something else "the Masque of the ShadowLord: whoever bears it shall receive no additional bane from me, so long as they never let me see their true face, for their banes will be borne by you, my sweet little brave-as-the-Heralds..." -
