Help I think I'm suffering from burnout!!!!!
Frustration replied to SzethTheHonorblade's topic in Creator's Corner
I had that predicament. How close are you to done? -
I'm a native speaker and I barely understand it. From what I get it feels to contrived to be natural.
-
When the guy the entire planet believes to be God says "this is forbidden" I would expect it to be an even bigger stigma than it is currently. But you recognize the possibility? Notice how he trails off. He isn't certain of that conclusion. Melishi could see the lines, but was unable to use them. Therefore it is possible to only be able to see them. That's one of the core themes of the Skybreakers. A order so aligned with Honor their spren often argue that they are the closest to him. Notum saying that there won't be enough checks on Kaladins power now that Honor is dead in Oathbringer. Multiple spren saying that Honorblades are dangerous because they aren't bound etc. Yes and those were totally done with Surgebinding. What greater feat has Surgebinding ever done? Does anyone other than the Stormfather consider it dangerous?
-
Wait, you could give Shedinja an Air balloon, and terastalize it into an electric type.
-
We do in fact know it existed back then, because in one of the Visions Honor says "to see the future is forbidden." Shards being splintered can have dramatic effects on the landscape. In fact if I've heard correct, back when the Shattered plains were in Dragonsteel they were the location of the Shattering of Adonalsium. That's not what he said at all. Melishi never implied that they could be manipulated. He is very much about restrictions. Dawnshards we're necessary for the greatest feats of Surgebinding. What greater feat has ever been accomplished than the Cataclysm of Ashyn? And additionally what planet has ever been destroyed without the Dawnshards?
-
Again, any other world you would be right. This is Roshar. I am unaware of any proof that links Surgebinding with the destruction of the Shattered plains. Melishi thought otherwise. Even going so far as to call seeing them about as useful as knowing what color scarf you brother had. I don't think the danger played into it as much as you think. This is Honor we are talking about. He needs no motivation other than keeping power in check. With the help of Dawnshards. So why allow division?
-
If the Radiant was that concerned with messaging they wouldn't have implied that they could see the future. You have proof that non-dawnshard Surgebinding is what destroyed the Shattered plains? So why couldn't Bondsmiths see Connections? That's a non-dangerous but incredibly useful power. Yes, but Honor was still concerned with limiting Surgebinding, even after they lost the Dawnshards.
-
So. Terastalize. Thoughts?
-
"Don't tell anyone. I can't say it. I must whisper. I could have prevented this." And how would a Bondsmith touch the sun? And even if they could the amount of Stormlight needed to maintain that, even for a second, surpasses the amount on Roshar at any given time. "'The most powerful forms of Surgebinding transcend traditional mortal understanding," Nikli said. . . . 'All their greatest applications require Intent and a Command. Demands on a level no person could ever manage alone. To make such Commands, one must have the reasoning--the breadth of understanding--of a deity. And so, The Dawnshards."-(Dawnshards pages 270-271). Did he have a choice? For all we know it could have been an all or nothing. And what happens when you mix futuresight with Dawnshards?
-
If this were any other planet you would be correct. However this is Roshar, the planet where games of chance are forbidden because they are too close to seeing the future. If a Rosharan said they foresaw something they ment it. How does Connection Manipulation destroy a planet? Or seeing Connections for that matter? The Cataclysm of Ashyn was only possible with the Dawnshards. However even with that Honor still felt a need to restrict Surgebinding. If he were just trying to contain destructive powers he would have forbidden Division. However he didn't. He is trying to cut back on the power of Surgebinding, not just it's most destructive aspects.
-
So why use the word "foresaw"? Roshar is very careful about seeing the future, they wouldn't use such a word without meaning it. I said powerful, not dangerous.
-
And why go through all the effort to hide it? Because his goal was to limit the powers of Surgebinding, so he cut back on the most powerful abilities.
-
The WoB has to outright be wrong for it to be anything other than canonical. It took Dalinar over a year at the third ideal in order to see Connections. Something we know Melishi could do. Additionally, there are only two regular Truthwatchers. So with that in mind I say it would be weirder if they had seen the future.
-
No, it doesn't but with that, the emerald, and the WoB it makes a solid case. When does a Regular Truthwatchers ever do that?
-
Truthwatchers are opposite Bondsmiths on the Surgebinding chart for a reason.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...

When you watch this video And think I know, I'll stop. Also if whoever made this video is reading this(cause I assume you have an account here if you read the coppermind) hi, I really liked the video, and you did a good job copying his speech patterns. -
Another aspect of Illumination. Just like how you can use Adhesion for Connection manipulation and to make full-lashings.
-
What's the third surge?
-
I'd imagine that regular Truthwatchers would be as good as seeing the future as corrupted Truthwatchers are at making illusions.
-
Because seeing the future is forbidden. It's probably a normal Truthwatcher thing, but Honor's restrictions prevented it from being used until he started to die. Just like seeing Connections for Bondsmiths. She said that they couldn't corrupt powerful spren before in Oathbringer and Mystical makes it clear the Radiants we're convinced she could only corrupt lesser spren.
-
Shardblades shouldn't drain Investiture, unless there is something about how they work we don't understand.
-
Well fabrials just got even more powerful.
Frustration replied to Frustration's topic in Stormlight Archive
Even if they are almost entirely in the cognitive realm Raysium daggers should do the trick. -
I'm of the opinion that Bondsmiths can do this. Either in a soft way by rewriting Connection so that they trust you and do what you say. Or by turning them into Parshmen and giving them no choice.
-
Is Surgebinding end-positive or end-neutral?
Frustration replied to cometaryorbit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
What's the difference between matter and Investiture in this context? All matter and Investiture can be converted back and forth. So for this classification is there any difference?- 32 replies
