HEY! Don't you dare say anything bad about Cadmium!!!!!! My cult (just me at this point) will track you down!! /s Just for the record, when storing Cadmium, you'd undergo hypoxia, which is the lack of oxygen. You'd have to try and make yourself hyperventilate to not die, though. Why would you say it's the poor man's gold? How can it be used to heal? Just trying to build knowledge for my cult (While typing the rest of this post out, I just realised that it could mean faster healing, so is that what you meant, from what I said at the end of my post?) This would only be good if you know you're being gassed. Once it's in your blood, you're probably already going to experience symptoms. With odourless and colourless gases, you probably won't be able to react in time Oxygen poisoning seems like a very real possibility when you tap at a high rate. Except, with most other feruchemical abilities, when you tap very fast, you don't seem to hurt yourself (i.e. Skimmers being able to support their own weight, Steelrunners not ripping themselves apart, Firesouls being able to handle their own heat). So, if you don't get owned by hyperoxia, your cells could function at a higher rate than before, leading to higher metabolism, faster heart rate, faster mental cognition, and just better strength all around (think of turbochargers and superchargers in car engines, more air means more combustion means more power).
-
On top of this, F-Cadmium could be very useful for similar applications, such as with people who are drowning, or who have water in their lungs. Lifeguards could have F-Cadmium medallions on the ready, and potentially save many lives. Basically anyone suffering from asphyxiation could be helped with this application. Also, if you are dying of asphyxiation, could you store that asphyxiation in a Cadmium-mind? Just as being a heavier person could store "more" weight per Investiture? Interesting to think about.

I'd bet the Ghostbloods managed to nab some spikes, but most likely most of the rest of the spikes would be kept by the kandra, as (iirc) Sazed doesn't really want Hemalurgy to be rediscovered by the general populace.

Waging war on the rest of the Cosmere 101
Njvodin replied to Grubfriend's topic in Cosmere Discussion
If war comes, I feel like Scadrial and Roshar are definitely NOT gonna be on the same side, but that Chasmfiend panzer idea is pretty cool -
I wonder if it would make digesting faster? Not sure on how metabolism works, but if your stomach is cooler, would it be able to intuitively put more work into digesting? As well as this, it could make you use less water?? maybe? It seems to be very useful in survival situations, I guess. Almost leaning into Bendalloy with this one, but whatever. Still nowhere near as impressive as Cadmium. The true cult of F-cadmium will rise. Mark my words.

Okidoke, I'll have a shot at answering this. Sorry in advance if it becomes a textwall. First, I'm gonna assume that the average Kandra digesting this mother will not have the skills to keep the baby alive. Secondly, I'm going to reference the First Contract. As per the Coppermind, the First Contract includes the This means that a Kandra cannot kill a living human. Thirdly, I'm going to reference process guides for Western Australian hospitals. In this, I'm personally going to extrapolate and say that before 20 weeks of gestation, a foetus is not legally considered to be a human. In this, I'm also going to extrapolate and say that after 20 weeks, a foetus is legally considered a human. To support this, I took this from the Victorian Royal Women's hospital website (which is from Victoria, not WA, but its close enough): Registering in this case means legally registered to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry. Now, let's assume that the baby is of 20 weeks or more of gestation. Legally, and ethically, this baby is considered alive. Assuming the Kandra digesting is morally obliged, and also following the First Contract, the Kandra cannot digest this mother, as it would potentially kill the baby. There may be some Investiture shenanigans that can be done to prevent the baby from dying, at which point the Kandra could have the muscles/functions/bones/hormones/whatever else, needed to sustain a pregnancy. Or, the Kandra could be skilled enough, and separate the baby from the digestion, and somehow assimilate the pregnancy. I dunno how this could be done, but I bet that it is possible with a skilled enough Kandra. Assuming the baby is less than 20 weeks gestation, it is legally, though maybe not morally, okay to digest this corpse, as the baby isn't legally alive yet. No special considerations are necessary to keep it alive, and any average Kandra Joe off the streets can do this. I think I had a lot more to say but I forgot what I wanted to say, so this will hopefully be enough

Yeah, I think the way I said it was a bit screwy, but what I meant was there was a copper metalmind also on the spike, but the spike is primarily made out of brass. But even with that, we're not sure what would happen with the memories in copper metalminds after the metalminds are melted together. This is so cool, I'd never even thought about multiple cognitive shadows on one body. I'd love to think of it as Spook and Kelsier crammed into the same body, it would be really weird

This could be pretty funny, you could have like a form of Russian Roulette, where you have 6 combined copper/brass spikes that double as F-copper metalminds, all spiked from different people with different abilities and memories. 5 of those memories are nice, happy memories that leave a good impression, and the last one is something really really gross, or just horrible, and leaves you mentally scarred for life.

The way I think that Brandon is trying to portray it is of the land of Arelon itself. There may be some flexibility here, as like you suggest, if Duladel is conquered, and people begin to think of Duladel as just another district of Arelon (albeit a country sized one), then adjustments may have to be made to Aon Aon, just like with the Chasm Line. However, it could also be strict, like what the borders of the country look like. So, if Duladel is kept separate (I don't know what the map of Sel looks like right now, so Duladel could be on the opposite side of the continent for all I know), then the boundaries of what people believe to be Arelon constitutes what the magic itself relies on as a base standard, in terms of Connection to land. In that case, I'm not sure how territories would work with Aon Aon. Maybe they're like way off to the side of Aon Aon Pretty interesting thoughts though

Ooh this one is fun My first two choices are A-Duralumin and F-Nicrosil. This is, in my opinion, a really easy way to supercharge any of the metals. Allomantic duralumin speaks for itself, so I'll explain F-Nicrosil a bit more. If you store Investiture for whatever 3rd metal you want (allomantic is easiest, so say A-Steel), and then in one burst use all of it, while simultaneously using duralumin, then use A-Steel to do a super-super-Push. If you focus it all on a little coin or something, it could surely go so fast it kills in one shot, but that's kinda boring. I'd personally use it to Push the other contestant away. It'd be funny, plus it could seriously damage them. But I also think there's too much protection for physical damage. Why not use A-Zinc or A-Brass to absolutely shatter someone's mind? We know that a duralumin powered Soothe or Riot can make peoples minds go blank for a hot second, but an even more supercharged (twin-charged?) Soothe/Riot would destroy them, knock them unconscious, even. The problem with facing someone like this is that you can't actually protect yourself, unless you're compounding copper, or maybe if you had an aluminium hat, but I'm gonna pretend that the opposition doesn't have one of these. You could do a lot of things, like twin-charge pewter punch someone, and absolutely decimate them, or twin-charge aluminium to REALLY make sure you get rid of all the metal in your body. Or, electrum, and find out what you could be doing instead of wasting time twin-charging a useless ability. If you could figure out how to use duralumin on feruchemical powers, then this also opens some possibilities, such as running across to the opponent with F-Steel at like Mach 5, or F-Cadmium, whatever the heck that does for you. Maybe you just start hyperventilating and the opponent freaks out and runs away. But seriously, it sounds like it could be pretty fun to toy with.

Haha Pattern is an interesting choice! My answer is pretty vanilla, I'd have to go with the Stick Dalinar as my favourite I just like, among other things, how he's basically the embodiment of stoicism but is also very vulnerable at the same time.

Welcome to the Shard What's your favourite cosmere book, and who's your favourite character? And, how much have you read of the cosmere?

The spanreeds will also have to be perfectly in sync, as a small jarring motion on the receivers end will cause the Aon to be imperfect, and probably just fizzle away, or whatever happens to it on paper

I reckon that this wouldn't actually be that hard. First, devise a way to accurately predict and/or calculate the strength of a singular brick, of various materials, including clay bricks, metal bricks, sandstone, et cetera. The easiest way of overcoming this block is to hire a soulcaster who soulcasts air or purified water into whatever material you want to create the room out of (steel, for simplicity). Second, designing the room with the Intent of it having no entrances, such as a time capsule that will never be opened. This step is a little harder, as if you want to create the room out of multiple bricks or blocks or whatever, then you have to have the same exact Intent for each little piece. If you create the "room" as only one hollow piece (requiring a mould be made before soulcasting it, or just knowing how to soulcast a hollow object out of solid material), then it would be a lot easier, and a lot more structurally sound, (especially if you can make the "walls" like a metre thick), as you only need to have the correct Intent once. Fourthly, you can spend 100 years trial and error-ing to perfect the Intent and the room, as its a pretty simple process. This is ignoring the challenge. If you want to have an entrance, that the Forger does NOT go through, but tries to Forge their way through, then there is once again a simple process. Lets say that the original room is a Soulcast block of steel with the dimensions 4 metres tall, 10 metres wide on each side (4x10x10). The walls are each 1 metre thick, and the ceiling and floor is half a metre thick. So, the inside volume is 3x8x8. That's not super relevant though. Using the same Soulcaster that originally made the steel box, you then direct them, and ONLY them, with very precise instructions, to soulcast out ONE, and only one entrance into the block of steel, with very precise measurements (e.g. 1.7800 metres tall and 0.5643 metres wide(just an arbitrary measurement)). The most important part is to make sure they have the correct Intent, and the correct measurements, down to the millimetre. There's no need to create a door, so there will be no need to worry about that, and the need for a door should be completely ignored, even to the point of having the Intent of not creating a door, as then the Forger cannot manipulate that Connection. Since there is no time limit on how long the Forger tries to get access to the room, I feel like this would last the longest. A Forger off of Sel would have no idea what a Soulcaster is, and would spend much time trying to find imperfections in the material, which, if soulcast with pure air or pure water, would be impossible to find with the naked eye. They would also have an extremely hard time trying to make a door appear through a metre thick of steel, especially if there was originally no intent to create an entrance. However, if this is the challenge room, then they may have a slightly easier time trying to make a second entrance appear. Also, as a sidenote, this room would have to be on a different planet, where there is no Dor presence, like Scadrial or Yolen or something, to restrict the access to Forging itself. I also quite like @Aeoryi's idea of killing the poor Forger

Different/Additional investiture in Lifeless
Njvodin replied to Aeoryi's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I feel like this would be harder than using Breath, but it might certainly be possible. As an example, using Stormlight to Invest a singer Lifeless, and, assuming they have a perfect gemheart, you might be able to give them a Command. But it seems like it would be a lot more difficult if its two radically different Connections than to the Nalthian system. If it was, say, a Nalthian corpse, it may be easier. Just speculation though. Assuming the first one is possible, we could get an intelligent spren, as they are just Investiture, and smoosh them into a corpse (that sounds really gross, I'm sorry). As another example, you could get the Stormfather (dunno how you'd manage that, but I'm sure its possible), and smoosh him into Tanavast's corpse, and make a super Tanavast/SF . While I feel like the first two are easy enough to do, this one would be hard, bordering on impossible, as the Connection and Intent of both Investitures would conflict and cause problems. If you could do something like harmonise the Tones of the types of Investiture, then you could perhaps make something new, but I'm not 100% on board with the possibility of this one. This could be interesting, but the way that I see it, a Divine Breath is just a super-Breath, it just automatically brings you up to the 5th Heightening, or whatever it is, while only being a single Berath. So, it'd just be the same as Investing a Lifeless with like a couple thousand Breaths (plus one), which is a tad expensive. It may do something though, as Returned are pretty much just Lifeless. Who knows?- 11 replies

Where did the parshendi do get their shards?
Njvodin replied to The Stormfather's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'd like it if there were some sympathisers to the listener cause back when the Recreance was just happening, and some individuals in some specific orders, like maybe some Edgedancers or Stonewards who wanted to help them out. As to how they discovered the gemstones, I have no clue. Maybe we'll find out something in Book 5 because I have a feeling the Shin are somehow related to this. They seem to be very mysterious. I just think it'd be cool if some of the ancient Radiants were interacting with the listeners, or at least aware of them and supporting their movement. -
I actually think that anyone CAN do it, as we see Nikaro, who is barely Invested, if at all, summon both a few Spirits, AND Yumi, who is actually most likely more Invested than those Spirits. So we have evidence that any random person can do it. I believe that maybe the Yuki-Hijo are better at summoning Spirits than the average Joe off the street, but that doesn't mean no one else can do it. If we correlate spren directly to spirits, then we can see that anyone can attract them, as anyone can have emotions (or in the case of true spren, whatever the order is interested in, like lies with Cryptics), just like anyone can make art. Which, I also believe, is part of the underlying themes, that anyone can make art. I don't think I said that it affects gravity, but the Surge of Gravitation, as the Rosharans know it, which affects mass. They are two seperate things (except for maybe Reverse Lashings?). A Cognitive Shadow like which we see on Threnody exists because their Connection to the Spiritual Realm is damaged somehow. The Nightmares on Komashi are the same as the Threnodite shades because they have also a damaged Connection to the Spiritual Realm, as the father machine is consuming their Investiture (which comes from the SR). That process you reference is just the father machine drawing them from the Cognitive Realm to the Physical, so it can feast upon them (at least until it started eating spirits, but by then the CS's Connection to the SR is already damaged). However, Midnight Aethers and the Midnight Mother are unrelated. They are the result of corrupted Investiture, not Cognitive Shadows, as far as I know.
-
I think the way the book explained it, Painter could paint the shadows because he was able to impress his thoughts onto the shadow itself. This could be a property of Cognitive Shadows themselves, maybe ones that aren't very Invested. However, the more Invested something is, the harder it is to influence it. So something such as a Seon, Skaze, Spren, or Spirit, or just any Splinter of a Shard in general is going to be harder to influence with something such as Painting. That's not to say it's impossible though. Maybe a skilled enough Painter that is really good at art, that is on some level Invested, or has something powering their Painting, could rewrite a Splinter (depending on size of the Splinter I guess). I reckon that you could say spren are attracted to emotions (Honor and Odium are kind of emotions, I guess?), and are pulled out of the Cognitive Realm, just like how the Spirits are attracted to art (Virtuosity is about art), and are potentially maybe pulled out of the CR at Komashi? I think you're pretty spot on with this one, the Spren of Roshar are somehow attracted (probably emotions), and coerced into becoming fabrials as the ancient Rosharans knew them. I think I saw in a WOB somewhere, but I can't find it now, that the father machine is akin to Nalthian Awakening, but doesn't use Breaths to Awaken it, just like how Yolish Lightweaving and Rosharan Lightweaving share a name, yet are slightly different. I think maybe this is the direction that even newer-style fabrials are going to go. We've only ever seen one other thing like this machine though, and that's Nightblood. I don't think these three are terribly related. The nightmares are Cognitive Shadows, whereas Midnight Aethers are an aether, which I'm not 100% on what that even is, and the Midnight Mother is something unrelated to Cognitive Shadows, I think. But in saying that, it's also similar to my previous point, how different magics share the same name but are slightly different origin. In my opinion, these two are not related. Skyeels seem to be somehow manipulating the Surge of Gravitation through a luckspren bond. Yes, the trees are are also manipulating Gravitation, but I doubt that they're also bonding luckspren. Maybe like you say, they are related. I could see the Spirits somehow being a part of this, but for a flora, an unthinking entity, being able to form a bond, is a little strange to me. Additionally to this, there does seem to be a thing with Spirits where if you have one half of a Spirit doing one thing, the other half has to be doing the complete opposite. So, if the trees are being Lashed upwards, then something has to be Lashed downwards, or some such. I agree with Firesong here, I don't think that it's due to a bond or anything. Just good ol' fashioned divine intervention. Feel free to correct me and point out any errors I've most likely made

As much as I love the Stormlight Archive, and as much as I want to see the characters develop, and how the worldbuilding plays out, I really love Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. Without spoiling anything, I'm a huge sucker for the style of the book, the genre, and the interactions between the characters in the story, especially the main characters. The ending really got me
