Here ye hear ye! Good day to you all! We over at the Fantasy World Planning Thread have been hard at work, and we're about ready to open up the world (called Jörð) to anyone who wants to come and join in the fun! There is a master-planning Google Doc linked in the OP of the thread, and we invite you to read it over and create a character of your own. Please don't hesitate to ask questions! We are all really excited to get this started and create an awesome story together!
-
Ooooh.
-
Please no But I do get where you're coming from. Building is fun!
-
I figured that was probably the best way to keep things in the general direction of "order." I'm really excited! This world is wonderful. We have all done a great job of building it!
-
I'll do the advertisement! I've never actually run an RP before so I'm not sure I'd be the best person to GM. I just want to be as helpful as is needed.
-
While I'm eager to jump right in, if we waited till tomorrow we could advertise in the larger PM and see if anyone wants to add characters or has questions. I could start the thread, or at the very least do some setting-descriptions to put into the first post and set up a few locations (an inn/tavern-type place for people to congregate, a census-station in a government building perhaps. If some people want to hook up at the Academy location, they should work out what that might look like though I have no idea, so they can build that themselves.) The giant river that runs through the heart of the continent needs a name. The Kur could be a good one, giving credence to the country named "Kuria." I don't much care that the rest of the rivers/lakes aren't named but that one will probably come up at least in passing as people are entering the city or walking around in the flooded portions of the under-city. I welcome any other names.
-
Still I'm glad someone brought it up before we were in the middle of the course of the RP. It's cleaner now and we have a framework we can point to when others turn up. Also, I will try and hunt through this thread for exactly what we decided on Innate magic and re-work the Google doc with that. Edit 2: Okay I think I got the final decision in there. I also put in the details on Descendants. Please edit as needed.
-
I like it! I agree, I think we have enough to get started. Anything that needs to be ironed out during the course of the RP we can do when it comes up. I'm glad we ironed this out though, magical Descendants were bound to come up.

I think children of non-ascended parents should get minor ability, or affinity as you suggested. Affinity for something related to their parent's power. As for the names, Changeling is good, and Legacy sounds fine. Descendant could also work, with a capital "D". It makes sense that children of Natural magic creatures/gods have some power but I also want to prevent a bunch of people creating tons of magical children. I have the impression that a truly ascended god wouldn't be much interested in having children, unless they were perhaps a fertility god/goddess, but even then. The way we've set up divinities in this world gives the impression that once ascended they sort of lose interest in mundane human affairs like governance, etc. But that's just my opinion.

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
ZincAboutIt replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
I'm so sorry! This is terrible news, and my heart goes out to his family and you and anyone else. I hope they find a light through that darkness. -
TenSoon, hands down. I love him, also who doesn't want to hang out with a talking dog??? Also Breeze, because I think he's terribly underrated and we could drink wine and be snarky together. And probably Amaram before he becomes an adult so I could convince him not to make such bad choices and do something good with his life instead.
-
Ah okay, thanks for clarifying!
-
Wait Natural magic users can use Innate magic? I thought that was an inborn trait?
-
What kind of investiture would you choose to use?
ZincAboutIt replied to Truthless of Shinovar's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Definitely Allomancy. Fewest strings attached, take-anywhere. I'd probably choose tin or one of the emotional metals. Not that flashy, but oh-so useful. -
I don't think you're crazy. People are all different and morality isn't as ironclad as lots of people think. I think perhaps I might not be the best to debate this point heavily, since I don't much care whether or not Kelsier is in the "good" or "bad" camp. I like darker characters and I like a person who is more than one "thing," so Kelsier is probably in my top 5 all-time characters, if not my favorite. As this conversation proves, what makes someone a hero or a villain exists on a movable scale that is different to each person. The desire to justify or demonize Kelsier's actions isn't something that I am very intent on, I just love that he can be (and is) both. Now if the question is whether or not Kelsier has a normal reaction to regular murdering, the answer is a resounding no. Kelsier is not normal.
-
Yes exactly. If someone broke into my house and tried to kill me or my husband, you bet I'd kill them if I had to. But there is a huge difference between "this person needed to die" and "I'm glad I killed this person."
-
I love Kelsier for the grey area he inhabits. His personality is such that he could be cast as protagonist or antagonist based on the circumstances. Even if he were to become on the "villain" side of the story later on, I'd still love him as a character. It would not strike me as odd to have him on either side in a story. His character is pretty much built to walk on the thin divide between "good" and "evil." He's very well written in that he encompasses both sets of traits needed for both heroes and villains. He is ruthless, dark, self-focused, arrogant, and is quick to violence. He is also loyal, caring, smart, and willing to stand up to injustice. Whatever plot or setting Kelsier ends up in during future Eras, as long as he maintains his core personality I don't mind which side he ends up on. I do think that people purposely overlook his epic dark streak in an effort to keep him in their "good guy" pile, though. Kelsier is pretty scary unless you're in his circle of people to care about (which can be pretty large). I am somewhat like this as well - without the murdering - so I can relate to this tendency. I think part of what makes Kelsier so interesting is that while he inhabits our grey area, he doesn't actually have much of his own grey area for people. You are either friend, or enemy, and the dividing line basically states whether or not he'll be totally comfortable killing you with a big smile on his face.

Thank you!

I always test right on the border between Slytherin and Ravenclaw, but I think if it was cards on the table, Slytherin would win. I'm a clannish, cunning, adaptable little thing. Color me royally un-surprised at the massive Ravenclaw over-representation.

I get the impression that the academy is closer to a trade school/university hybrid, so I definitely think that there would be a large and impressive academy there but I'm not sure if it's THE Academy. But yes, there would be an academy location there.
-
I think that smaller groups initially makes more sense to me, but I don't mind much either way. Several of the group could be staying in the same hostel perhaps, and rumors of a disappearance in the area are particularly new or intense? A few people could meet at a census station? If you have an idea I'd love to hear it. I also edited my character. I've changed his name to fit the naming conventions better, made him younger, less powerful, and more interesting (I think). More room for development.

People you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley
ZincAboutIt replied to Voidus's topic in The Alleyverse
Lita followed Laurelai as she took them on a fairly straightforward path, winding their way onto an alley of red brick. She tried to memorize the route, but the scenery slipped through her mind like water in a sieve. Her feet felt heavy and her head light - never a good sign. The rooms behind the pale blue door were sparsely furnished but nicer than her flat in the city. There was an air of efficient tidiness that gave the place a dormitory feel, like the back rooms of a university. A small portion of her mind that was still awake stirred at the mention of a "department of records," but it was a teaspoon full in an ocean of exhaustion. "Thank you," she said to Laurelai, hoping her words didn't sound too slurred. "Is this a place I can rent long-term? It's far nicer than my room in the city. I've got little to pay with now, but I have more back at my flat." She wasn't entirely sure how this was going to work, but her father had always told her it was better to offer to pay and be refused, than the other way 'round. "Oh," she added. "If I do need to leave, do I just...Alleytravel out? Is there a special door?" A special door? Lita repeated to herself, feeling like an idiot. What is this, fairyland? Laurelai was clearly keen to be about her own business, but Lita did not fancy being stuck down here without knowing a way out - even if she probably wouldn't be leaving for a while. Old habits died hard, and what kind of spy would she be if she didn't double-check her exits? @Voidus -
No thanks!

Wait really? Would it affect hair, though? I imagine hair would still catch fire. Sorry I don't mean to derail this...

That's a great suggestion! I have to admit Ritual magic really confuses me so I won't me much help there, but if you can work out a way for them to do this, then I think we should definitely put this into their arsenal of tools. This may be what the more "militant" arm of the organization does if the simple belief-change won't work. Okay new plot idea below: @kenod @MacThorstenson @Steel Inquisitive @ShadowLord_Lith
