Renata took another sip of wine and felt her mouth flatten into a line. Typical, she thought. The wealth of kingdoms in his hand, and the man still cooked up a line like that. Wit so rarely paired hand in hand with rank. She turned, tilting her head back to try and look him in the face. Almighty but he was tall, even by Alethi standards, and everyone knew they were basically giants. She stepped back a bit to avoid looking ridiculous. "Brightlord," she said, breezing past his comments on her looks. "What a relief to know someone will be on this expedition with a proper weapon. I don't believe I caught your name?" @Element of Chaos

@Element of Chaos how old is your character? Trying to decide what kind of flavor of irritated Renata will be at the flirting, and age will be quite the determining factor.

Renata raised her glass to Wilhelm a slight bit before taking another sip. She took a pastry from one of the little trays sitting nearby, and palmed two others for later. Lighteyed food, she thought, eyeing the little confection. It was nonsensically small, but tasted good enough. It was hard to find food with enough kick in the Alleycity, but this was good, filled with some kind of vegetable curry. That part of her that was not part of her shied away from the idea of eating "men's food." Renata shoved it down, taking a bigger sip of wine. Men's food, women's food, that wasn't her concern; she was darkeyed. Food was food. Renata looked harder at Wilhelm, partly to distract herself, partly out of true curiosity. The look in his eyes gave her an uneasy feeling. He seemed hungry, ravenous even, but he hadn't touched any of the food. She made a mental note to watch that one. So many coats, she thought, looking at his bundled form. He must be sweltering in that.

Not a bad skillset, actually, Renata conceded. She watched the woman take a small bite of the food, which seemed odd for how hungry she looked. Probably checking for poison. Clever. She probably should have done the same, though poisoning the entirety of an expeditionary force before it even started seemed highly unlikely, even to Renata's own paranoia. "I'm Renata," she said, taking another sip of the wine. "I'm a courier and a runner. I was a scribe back in Vedenar - full slate of skills. Shorthand, some cartography." She shrugged. Another girl had piped up, calling herself Arun. Renata waited for her to list any skills of her own. The man she was talking to earlier had summoned, then dismissed a shardblade. That would've made him a Brightlord back home - Heralds only knew what that meant here, though. No need to ask his skill, Renata thought. @Sorana

Renata looked up from her inspection of an elaborate fabrial hanging on the wall. She'd heard someone call it a "clock"; apparently, they told the time. This one was embellished within an inch of its life, and Renata was rather impressed that it hadn't ripped itself out of the plaster yet. The speaker was the girl with the limp; she looked like she hadn't seen a decent meal since Aharietiam. Renata wondered what her skills were. She snagged a drink off the tray of a passing servant, nodding as she did so, and sipped at it. They served odd wine here, but Renata liked it well enough, despite the fact that it was almost always one of two colors. This one was light yellow and fizzy. She took a sip. "Perhaps you'd like to go first," she said to the woman, watching over the rim of the glass. @Sorana

"A bear, Aldred?" Liezl was much as Aldred remembered her, a Kurian down to her bones with a bright sheaf of honey-blonde hair and golden tan skin. The scowl she fixed him with was also familiar. Aldred grinned at her. "I told you the next time I was in town I'd bring you something special." Liezl rolled her blue eyes, but couldn't quite keep a smile off her lips. "Five years it's been, and now you come tromping in leading a blighted circus through my pub? If that beast so much as scratches the paint on my walls..." "Yes, yes, I know, barred for life," Aldred waved a hand through the air. Liezl raised a brow at him. "Barred for life? More like behind bars for life. I own this place now, you wild rover, and I won't hesitate to call in the city guard if I need to." "My Liezl, a tavern owner," Aldred mused, catching a strand of her hair between his fingers. "You've come quite a ways from pulling pints and sleeping behind the woodstove, eh?" Liezl batted his hand away. "I never slept behind the woodstove you cheeky rogue, as you well know." Aldred winked at her. "Indeed I do. Speaking of, might you know where a tired Sayer could lay his head this evening?" "If you want a room, you'll pay good carats for it," Liezl said, waving the barmaid over. The young woman looked harried, having just filled a punch bowl full of root draught for the bear outside. "Greta, this is Aldred," Liezl said, pointing at him. "If any one of that party starts a fight, he is the one responsible." Aldred put on his most charming smile for Greta, who had quite excellent taste in hair ribbons and blushed rather prettily. "Oh my dear Greta," he said, "I'm very responsible." Liezl snorted and headed towards the tavern's back room. "I mean it Aldred, don't ruin my pub!" "A pint of mead, if you've uncorked it Greta love," Aldred said to the serving girl. "Just bring it outside." With that, he strode back out into the spring sunshine and wedged himself beside the hunter at the edge of the table.

I just can't stop thinking of Mistborn with this city name... Ahh, the odd coincidences of life.
-
Yeah. If we want to start personifying "the city" then I'd say that, in true commercial fashion, you'd have to be or do something to gain aid. So, if you're clever, the city will aid you. Or, if you know what to ask for, it will help. Or, if you trade fairly with your fellows, the city will accept you. Something along those lines.
-
Certainly the latter- probably not the former. "The City" is generally the personification of trade/commerce, culture-mixing, and moral ambiguity at least as far as I've seen both irl and in other stories I've read. Roshek is the epicenter of trade on the western coast, but it's also dangerous, skeevy, and full of poverty like any large city.
-
That's a really good point! I agree, "the city" itself will be a source of common belief.

As the party filtered in, a young boy slipped out the front entrance and ran back down to the main square near Tradesman's Gate. "Hot food and good ale at the Half Moon Tavern!' he called, jamming a red floppy cap adorned with a ridiculously tall feather onto his head. He ran all over the square, drumming up business. If be brought in a good dozen patrons, Mistress Liezl might even give him a toffee, and Fritz did ever-so love toffee. He passed a woman with a flower growing out of her head walking with a large wolf. "Half Moon Tavern, open to all for the census!" he called. "Just up the Wein Canal, on your right! Food and drink for all!" Fritz smiled, thinking of toffee, and sprinted down a side street, calling all the while. @kenod @ShadowLord_Lith

Aldred kept walking and rolled his eyes. "Swim in the canal, for all I care," he said, leading them up a winding street towards a large, cheerful tavern overlooking one of the smaller canals. It wasn't the best part of town, but it was far from the worst either. A jaunty half-circle swung from the eaves, and it looked as though the patio was fairly empty. Lucky, that, Aldred thought, looking back at the group. One of them had shifted shapes; Aldred thought it might have been the surly one complaining about music. "Alright," he said, stopping outside. "I know the barmaid here, so no one kill anyone in there or it'll be me barred for life. Bear," he pointed at the large bear, "it'd be best if you went through this entrance." Aldred rapped on a wooden picket fence surrounding the outdoor seating. "I'll go tell Liezl she's got a large party. If we're lucky, it might be late enough in the season that she's uncorked the mead."

"They serve food, too!" Aldred called over his shoulder, step quickening at the thought of stew and spaetzle or maybe some of those lovely fried fish that Liezl used to cook. "And there will be music!"

The tavern is right alongside a canal so there's fish a-plenty. Also, @Chasmfiend#1 I'm getting serious "Golden Compass" vibes from Mutig. He reminds me of Iorek Byrnison the Panserbjorn. @Invocation quick question, is Janim still a bear? I can't keep track of all the bears.
-
Just missing Lilia and Chadwick I believe. Ahh, the poor owner of the Half Moon is going to have their work cut out for them pouring pints and serving... whatever it is that bears drink. @Chasmfiend#1 The tavern has a lovely patio perfect for bears
-
"Well met, Jurgen," Aldred said. "And as it happens, I do. It's been a good while since I last passed through Roshek, but I'd bet my boots that the Half Moon is still pouring pints." He glanced over the bear, who was easily as tall as a man - taller, really. "And they have a lovely patio out back," he added. "Follow me." I wonder if old Burkhardt is still there, he thought. That leathery old boot owes me at least one drink, and another game of dice. He smiled over his shoulder at the odd troupe and sauntered across the square into the city proper.

Aldred nodded to the man, a powerfully-built fellow a good half-dozen years older than himself. He turned to the soldiers, who had stopped rather suddenly, looking unsure. "I has been a long day for us all," he said to the men. "But surely, there must be something else for you to do? All is well here." The leader of the squad looked to his second, conversing briefly, then nodded. "You do good work here, Sayer," he said. "Just make sure this lot doesn't kill one another, eh?" Aldred smiled and put a hand over his heart. "The light of logic be with you," he said to the men, who had already started retreating back into the upper city. He turned towards the hunter, and felt some of his talent fade. "You'd do well not to make enemies of the city guard," he said. "The census has them all on edge, I can feel it." He grinned again, giving a little bow. "I'm Aldred, though some call me the Itinerant. You keep some interesting company." @Steel Inquisitive

Aldred felt the tug of magic again, accompanied by the feeling of fear. Someone needs to do something, he thought. He could almost feel other people in the crowd thinking it too. An accord needed to be reached. A deal needed to be struck. The Itinerant was required. He stepped out into the square, leaving the Ritualist merchant and his wares behind. A squad of soldiers had begun to descend on the small group - it looked like violence was imminent. Aldred felt himself grin a little too wide. The hum in his mind grew louder, louder. He felt the talent swirl around his tongue like fine apple brandy as he stepped between the groups. "My friends," he said, his voice carrying unnaturally through the noise of the square. "Can we not all resolve this peaceably?" You are calm, he thought, pouring it into his voice. You wish to listen, you wish to treat with one another. A deal must be struck. @Steel Inquisitive @Chasmfiend#1 @Invocation @Vargo Seldon

A story? Aldred felt the smile slide back onto his face. If a story was what this fellow wanted, then a story he would get. And a room as well, he thought, grin broadening. What a deal indeed. "As it happens, I do know my fair share of stories," he said. "Out in the wilds of east Perechia, I came across a village that was utterly beset by --" The humming, droning thrum of magic swelled in his ears, nearly drowning out his own thoughts. Something pulled forcefully at his mind, a powerful yank. Aldred cut off his sentence, head turning sharply to gaze over the crowd. It wasn't hard to see the source of the magic: across the square, a massive bear stood speaking with a man and woman, and... was that a wolf? The skin on the back of Aldred's neck prickled, and he felt some of his talent slide into place, urging him to to speak with the creatures, to strike a deal. He looked back at the Ritualist. "Well, there's a story in the making," he said, pointing at the bear - wait, no, the two bears. How could he have possibly missed anotherbear? "This city's madder than a cat in a sack with all this magic stuffed into it."

Not too sure what you mean by your first question. The way I view large cities is that there are so many people believing so many disparate things that there is actually less of a chance for a Natural being to manifest there - usually. Some things, like the larger gods, or something like that, have enough people believing in them. But after living in large cities for years and years I've found that most people are socially atomized enough that getting enough group-belief together is hard. That's just my opinion though.
