  1. This brings up even more interesting things/possibilities/conflicts I can cook up! I thought of the majority of the order being almost kind of "sent for," the way you'd send for a priest to perform an exorcism. So, more often than not, they respond to requests or rumors of problems in an area. Some of the members have militant training, and there is probably a sect that are solely militant to take care of a true threat. The rest of the time, I pictured them as largely non-interventionist unless they sense something is truly dangerous. While they might not always approve of other gods or enhanced humans (at least above their own god) they don't get involved with that, or aren't supposed to anyway. They seek to proselytize their faith in their own god, and obviously increased faith only adds to the god's power, but it's not so much a conversion mission as it is a mission to spread "sensible belief" habits/dispelling ignorance. Using Natural magic to one's benefit rather than believing in things that can harm. The patron god does not seek to convert, their intent is reason and education. When a community outright refuses to stop believing in a malignant spirit or creature, or is doing it on purpose to spread malignance, then that is usually when outside help is sent for. Ritual mages, even other gods - especially those who have sway in one area or another - who can address a threat better than they can. I think that if a community believed in something that was positive to neutral, they would suggest not to believe, but also not press the issue too hard.
  2. Not sure who Riordan is, but this is what I was thinking as well. Also, some ideas for this "Anti-Superstition League," which will likely tie into one or more of my characters. Please note these are only suggestions, feel free to chime in as you like on what works and doesn't. “Anti-Superstition League” ideas: Name Suggestions: Church of Reason, Doctrine of Sensibility, “The Orthodoxy” The priests/priestesses of an ascended god of reason/logic/education This priesthood spreads the word of their god, combating dangerous superstitions that could lead to the development of malignant spirits, monsters, etc. Their faith in the god allows them the gift of magically-enhanced oration/debate/lecture, which enables them to persuade many communities to dampen or abandon these dangerous beliefs altogether In some cases, the priests can also use this gift to negotiate with the monster/spirit/god in question, striking what is effectively a covenant between the being and the local community (this course of action is rarely taken and not recommended unless as a last resort) This group of people can be known in-world as the “Sayers” or “Speakers” (suggestion here) because of their powers of oration. This would give people an easy honorific title for members of this group. (Speaker Kivyet, Sayer Timmel, etc.) Groups of Sayers will often travel with an Innate, who can sense the pooling and flow of natural magic. Often they will guide the group to the problem-area in question.
  3. Thoughts on what would happen if someone/something was known throughout many countries and places but all by a different name? Would there be 5 different versions of that person/deity running around, or one person who can slightly change abilities and appearance depending on the territory they are in currently? I have some ideas on potential gods/gods-in-progress but I want to know the consensus on this before I write them up.
  4. Would you be RPing as this character, or is he just around to build the world? If the latter, I would be fine to sign off on this, though I'm not the ritual expert so I can't say whether or not the ritual changes are accurate. If you want to play this character I obviously want to know more about him. But it's a good Natural magic progression from legend to reality!
  5. I'm on board with the legend having happened, and also the creation of the apple, not sure how the man is changed into a monster, though if enough people believed that the man was beastial, it could happen. The castle being alive... I am not sure on that one, but also I'm far from the final authority on this. That's a ton of group-belief circulating around a castle to effectively animate an entire building. How wide-spread is this legend? For the castle to be "alive" it would need to be very widely-believed.
  6. Yup, that's the entire premise of Natural magic. Folklore can become real!
  7. Oh that makes perfect sense now that I'm fully awake. Thanks for adding! Legends are always fun, I've got a bunch of folklore creatures of my own that I'm planning on submitting
  8. Ahh, well, I actually don't care where the center of the world is, I think it was Steel that suggested Kuria. What were you thinking? Kolynia looks far bigger and has way more people, but would also be quite close to the commercial center, and has access to the bay and an entire coastline... This is it for me tonight, my brain is shutting off. Till tomorrow!
  9. I don't care that much either about the continent name, but if someone else does feel free! I think that the Leylines crossing near Kuria makes perfect sense to me. There are three rivers, a giant lake, a bay, all within the area. If magic and water sort of follow one another/flow like one another, then Kuria and the surrounding area would be an ideal location for crystal formation and subsequent export, both via rivers and the greater ocean. They also have control of the mouths of three rivers and the best natural port in the continent really, so even if they don't actually mine the crystals in Kuria, they could have their finger on the pulse of crystal trade. You're right about the satellite academies. Perhaps the grand council (or equivalent) of wizards meets in Kuria, and the largest academy is there. It's where I would put a large academy of magic, especially if you'd have first-pick of crystals via trade.
  10. I'll have to look up this file at work, my Chromebook does not like it Excellent job!! Also, do we have a name for the continent? Do we need/want one?
  11. I am fine with just leaving this as the map if we want to get planning. We should definitely choose a base area. I would agree with @Steel Inquisitive that the large bay and several rivers make Kuria an ideal cultural capital. I suspect the Academy would either be here, or somewhere nearby. Pedinia, Perechia and Pieisia (the Three Sisters, perhaps? I'd imagine these countries to either be constantly at war, or deeply intertwined culturally) could also be good to get a degree of progressing wildness in the setting. Vebedia and Kolynia would also likely feature heavily into a Kuria-centered world. Cucal and Fiugia could serve as "deep wild" areas. It's 500 miles from Kuria to the border of Fiugia so I doubt many people are going to be travelling all the way from one end of the continent to the other within the story.
  12. I really like the number of lakes on this map, I like lakes
  13. Basic European is fine with me. The landscape is likely going to be more varied anyway, with belief and identity floating around tweaking a few things here and there. It's more just that I want it to make relative sense. No massive deserts right next to huge forests, things like that. Nailing down a climate zone area makes drawing up a world more cohesive is all, and will also affect culture in big ways.
  14. @MacThorstenson That tutorial is very helpful, I think this is the way to go about the map. I don't have a need to make it myself, but I can take over playing around with it if that makes sense to everyone. I think what we should nail down up-front is the general climate zones we want to rp in. Do we want a tundra/taiga/temperate area (upper Northern Hemisphere), basic European climate with forests, hills, dales, plains, etc, Mediterranean climate with a large ocean component, steppe, desert, archipelago...? The list goes on. So, what are we feeling?
  15. Oooh thanks I'll take a look now. Meanwhile, I created a Master Planning Google Doc that we can continually reference and edit as needed. It's open-edit so be honorable everyone
  16. Ah, well I wouldn't be opposed to it, though I do think I'd prefer a nice solid 70+/30- ratio of humans to non-humans. I imagine that the Natural magic creatures and spirits aren't generally interacting with humans on any kind of positive level generally, and that they are largely in their own spheres, so if there is too much division we'll effectively have to run two separate storylines/worlds or just sort of mash everyone together, and I personally don't think that makes sense. But I'm sure the others will also weigh in on this and we'll figure out what to do.
  17. Seems plausible but what else can you tell us about this animal? What kind? Powers? Origin of legend? Why everyone believes in you? Basic motives? Etc.
  18. Lita nodded, looking up at the mention of her name. "Simple sounds wonderful," she said, tapping brass now that the chill of the room had started to cool the blood on her shirt sleeve. "And I think a medallion is just fine for now, but thank you." At least until I can buy a few more blouses. It was hardly fair, stabbing a woman through the sleeve of her second-best linen blouse with no warning. She tried not to think too hard about the little spike in her arm. It had been surprisingly less... violent than she had imagined. All the old stories about the World of Ash spoke of blood and axes, Steel Inquisitors with spikes through their eyes gleefully slaughtering helpless peasants. The people before her were most definitely odd but they hardly seemed dangerous. Don't be a fool, she told herself, watching the blue-skinned man pat down his smoking pocket. You don't look dangerous either, but you managed to kill a man. She had a feeling that these people could do far worse than kill her, and they'd do it with the same bemused smiles they were giving her now. Now don't sell yourself short, she thought. I'm sure they'd be far happier than 'bemused'. They'd probably throw a party. A tiny trill of hysterical laughter escaped her mouth. She closed her mouth quickly, clearing her throat and burning tin. Lita focused on the clean, sharp pain in her arm, the light of the room, the shine on the little Spanreed pens in the blue man's hand. One breath in. One breath out. Lita looked back at Laurelai. "Yes, I think simple is best to start with." @Voidus
  19. Work is insane rn but I will be devoting this evening to brainstorming things! I agree weaknesses should still be a thing. Makes a character more fun to play with because you need to be creative and find ways to live with the limits.
  20. I support this character! Great idea for the university, the age-cheat is a great way to cram a lot of knowledge into a character that still looks and acts spry and youthful-enough to do lots of stuff.
  21. "Death" is generally personified as being utterly unconcerned with the goings-on of the world anyway, so I can imagine it only getting involved if someone/something wanted to block it from its own rightful tithe, as it were. The taxman cometh...
  22. Also with @kenod's spirit and creature classification, we basically do have sentient creatures that aren't humans, and someone could likely rp as one if they wanted to (though that would come with its own limits).
  23. Oh I meant just like different races of humans, different cultures, things like that. Like on Roshar, maybe not quite "races" but very distinct cultures, a range of skintones and eye colors. Fun diverse-looking people so everyone has options to play with. I know this is a more classic fantasy landscape but I love a world that has a realistically diverse set of peoples and cultures.
  24. @kenod these are masterful! They also really allow lots of room for creativity, basically anything we want to make up can map onto this guide. I don't have any complaints, aside from maybe the Progenitor ability, but also if the offspring are mortal and not that clever then it would likely keep the world from quickly filling up with unkillable horrors.
  25. It's pretty slow over here too, though it's much prettier than my ugly map I have a larger map of the area I had originally drawn somewhere at home if we want to go bigger. I would probably prefer keeping it to a somewhat small area, so that everyone is sort of forced to move around one another in the story. I created an entire culture around my original map-world actually, though I don't really intend on using much of the world anymore (I moved the story plot to a smaller setting but just kept the world around). If you want I can link to the google doc and we can all edit and pick and choose around this, change names, customs, etc. as we like. I created countries and races so if we wanted to we could just use those, or we could come up with new ones. I also created a bunch of weird creepy folkloric creatures which I think would be fun to throw into the world, and we can make new ones too. I'd love to brainstorm some in-world curses based on the culture, and I'd also like to discuss basic customs and taboos, because those can really increase immersion with little effort up-front.
