  1. "Do they have anything in common, these missing people, other than the fact that they all went down to the Fens? I assume that's why we are here." Aldred shuddered. The Fens were a half-sunken maze full of unsavory things, from gangs to cuthroats to rats big as a man's forearm. He'd spent several months in Roshek five years ago, and only once had he ventured down into the Fens. It had taken about a quarter hour for some ragged teens carrying bottle-glass shivs to corner him in a flooded alley and steal his money and his boots. But that wasn't the real reason he'd never taken a second look down there. It had an odd feeling about it, the Old City. No one knew for sure what was down there, beneath all that water and silt. Sound moved strangely through the watery streets, and narrow passages would often open up into grand, bricked-over squares or promenades, only to funnel back into winding paths. Staircases would end in walls, and old buildings filled with row upon row of luminescent mushrooms. Aldred had even heard stories of the old Academy being down there, though he doubted that one. The Academy had been built farther up the shore on solid rock, and looked like it had stood there forever. Still, the Fens were not a place Aldred wished to find himself. "I'll want that mage with us," Aldred muttered. "Him and his fancy coin lantern. We'll need all the light we can get down there even during the day. It's constant twilight down there, and wretched hard to move without being overheard."
  2. Chiming in here totally randomly to say that I love this song. Good choice. That is all.
  3. "Lost ones?" Aldred said, stepping closer. "Sorry, but what exactly has been going on around these parts? All this magic floating around these days makes it hard to sense anything dangerous. I mean..." he gestured behind him, where Mutig and Chadwick had started up the road back to the tavern. "Those two alone would be enough to pull me toward a place out in the wilds. Here, there's a Natural magic being on every street corner." He moved to sit next to Amara, thoughts turning toward darker things. "Has something been taking people? Let me guess, there's a terrible rumor flying around about it..." Belief. Such power in belief, and even a simple story could soon grow wildly out of control. @Sorana
  4. Yes! I’m heading to sleep but Liezl is an NPC so feel free to write any interactions with her you might need at the tavern while I’m gone. Just make sure to throw the “Fritz is missing” line in there somewhere. Excited to write some creepy darkness weirdness once everyone assembles at the mouth of the Fens!
  5. Lita turned, surprised, when it was Laurelai who answered her question. Well, she wasn't surprised that Laurelai knew who the Nightwatcher was, but when last Lita had looked, the woman had been completely immersed in her watching. Like a hawk, Lita thought, briefly imagining Laurelai as an enormous raptor stuffed into a blue and silver havah. She coughed a little to hide her sudden giggle, then set down her glass of wine. Enough of that until I've had some food. Laurelai seemed a bit odd talking about this subject, but Lita couldn't quite put her finger on it. There was a tiny frown creasing her brow, but Laurelai's voice was as easy and plain as it usually was. Except...there. A tiny waver. Lita forced herself not to smile at catching it, instead looking properly enlightened at the information - which was, actually, quite interesting. "A blessing and a curse?" Lita asked. "So everyone knows that they will get cursed, but they go anyway? And there isn't even a guarantee that you'll get what you want?"
  6. Lita jumped a little at the sound of someone shouting down below on one of the main guest levels, briefly noting the man and then dismissing him. There were so many people here, so many to watch. She had about a dozen questions for Laurelai, but she worried that the thing hanging above their heads might hear her asking. Something told Lita that whatever it was didn't have much of a complicated agenda, but invisible spirit voices weren't something she wanted to mess with if she could help it. She tapped the tip of her nose with the end of her spanreed pen, then looked over at Okame, who was still attempting to worship the invisible voice. The rusting Horneater had just finished eating some kind of flatbread wrap that he'd managed to smuggle inside his robes, which would have impressed Lita if it didn't make her so terribly envious. "Who is this Nightwatcher person you Rosharans keep talking about?" she asked Okame, more to keep him from talking to the invisible spirit than anything. She did admit to being curious though. Everyone she'd asked had skirted around the subject, talking about the "Old Magic." It smacked of secrets. @Invocation
  7. Excellent choices all around! I actually don't know who I would have dinner with so I suppose that was a rather unfair question of me to ask. I suppose Hoid is an obvious choice, and I think it would also be fun to have dinner with Breeze. We'd drink wine and be snarky, and I'm sure he'd Soothe me into thinking I had the most excellent time.
  8. How about a glass of punch? If you could have dinner with one of Brandon's characters, who would you choose?
  9. I voted "yes, dependent on features." I think that making a forum/site specifically dedicated to the RP would be handy and it would also make the expanded settings easier to grow without cluttering the main Alleyverse RP. I personally would enjoy having something like the "Gallery" here so that I have somewhere to post my mediocre RP art without feeling awkward that the whole Shard can see my niche doodling that only a small subset of people would care about. I'm sure I'll think of more things and edit this accordingly, but the Gallery is the one thing I'd really miss giving up on here. I haven't been so interested in drawing in years.
  10. Yes! Okay, also, someone should go get Thorstein and Lilia. I can have Aldred run back, or have Leizl tell them, but I imagine they'll both want to be there for the monster-hunting? @MacThorstenson @kenod I'm pretty sure everyone else is out there in the streets together.
  11. Renata slipped her pen out from behind her ear and flipped open her little notebook, scribbling down what had just occurred. "What is going on up there?" she called from beside the wall, fear leaking into her voice and turning it slightly shrill. Renata cleared her throat, putting a little more substance behind her words. "Not a moment ago it sounded like this place was ready to rip apart. You expect us to simply stand around without asking any more questions?"
  12. I would totally support an individual website for this, but I agree with Mac that it would need to be differentiated enough to not simply be paying to reinvent the wheel. I would not mind chipping in some money for it though, goodness knows I buy far stupider stuff regularly.
  13. Definitely sounds good! I really appreciate all of you taking initiative with the plot and stuff because I'm going through a bit of a time over here and it's gotten way harder to create recently. I enjoy reading where everyone is taking this plot and I love everyone's characters
  14. That sounds good! I need to sleep but I'll have more time tomorrow to devote to building this up. Thanks for your help!
  15. Just leans up against a wall face-first. Easy.
  16. That could work! I did actually imagine it kind of like a fungus or an aspen tree, with a main "system" that sent out tendrils of sorts. They could follow it back to the host-thingy. Yikes lol I'll definitely have to write the actual description of this thing during the daytime
  17. Another character! Bio below. I'm willing to change this if he's too OP, I'm not intending him to be a combat character but giving him zero fighting experience also seemed incongruous with his occupation/background. @MacThorstenson or @Voidus EDIT: I'm actually striking this submission, I just don't have the mental bandwidth to do any more characters justice at this time. Feel free to ignore this in perpetuity.
  18. Sorry for the delay! It could go either way, though I was thinking that it would be acting of its own accord. It's not particularly clever, but it is large and smart enough to plan attacks and sneak about. However, I could easily readjust a storyline to make it bound to someone. If we choose to go that route I may need some advice from someone who understands the Ritual side of magic.
  19. The MOST legit of websites!
  20. "Kelek," Renata swore, retreating from the staircase until her back hit the wall. It sounded as though the building itself was wailing and creaking, ready to break apart. The young doorman stood at the top of the staircase, eyes wild, looking nearly as scared as Renata felt. Something has happened, she thought. Something wrong. Renata glanced back through the main room, where a few of the guests were still lingering. Should she run for it? Break out through the front? A part of her knew that wouldn't be happening. The only way out was through.
  21. Lita nearly spat out her sip of wine at the sound of the voice in her ears. She flared her tin, narrowing her eyes at the floating shape, trying to get a better look at it, but the dust had gone. A chill moved through the air, weaving around her like a strange serpent; she shivered. Laurelai had already started talking to the thing. Wonderful, she thought. More shadowy, strange floating voices talking to me. She doubted this one would be as interesting as the Stranger's Shade was. Almost on reflex, she touched the coin where it sat in her other pocket, resting against her leg. Then, she nudged Okame, who had begun speaking aloud to the spirit in his usual booming voice. "By the Survivor, could you possibly talk any louder?" she said to him through clenched teeth. "This thing heard us whispering halfway across the room, I'm sure you don't need to shout at it." @Invocation
  22. Renata backed towards the main room again, still keeping a wary eye out at the top of the stairs. There was a part of her that wished to do something, to intervene, but fear held her back. This wasn't her business, and it wasn't her fight. She could see the man in the coats hanging back as well, watching. Clever, she thought. He's odd but clever. Cleverer than the others. It was almost comical. Here they were, likely all set to head out on a doomed expedition, and already someone wanted to start killing. She watched Hellbent brandish his shardblade at Lizanne, looking almost like the Thrill was upon him. No, Renata thought, paying careful attention to his face. He enjoys bloodshed all on his own. It wasn't a comforting thought. She glanced back up the stairs again, silently willing Nitinyas to descend the steps. If they were all going to die, she'd rather it was later than sooner.
