Ye gods, I am woefully behind! Aldred is nigh useless unless this thing wants something he can strike a bargain for. What exactly does it want, @Chasmfiend#1? Any ideas?
-
Ooh unexpected but I like it. Honestly I never imagined it so clever but I'm kind of fond of it now. However, it seems very powerful quite suddenly. Is it still evil/negative, and just trying to trick everyone? Or is it misunderstood? Or simply trying to figure its own self out?

I’m just fine with it! Please do!

Lita raised a hand at Kumiko. "It's no trouble," she said. "I'm Lita Attar, I'm a Twinborn." She sighed, looking back over her shoulder at the large PlasmaCore building. So many secrets, a part of her whispered - that troublesome voice, the one that was her constant companion. There they sat, hunkered down like an old banker in his counting house greedily shining his coins. But she was a babe in the woods compared to these people. The ones who played this game could sling fire, burn holes through walls, change their soul even. For Lita had begun to suspect what kind of talents Laurelai was hiding under that cool porcelain veneer. Lita was woefully unprepared, newly recruited and only just having learned Alleytravel well enough to avoid killing herself and others. What kind of hope did she have to weasel secrets out of a vault like PlasmaCore, let alone the world? No hope at all, Lita thought, irritated. At least, not in her current state. Twinborn were rare, but she may as well have just been a Tineye. Brass feruchemy was practical, sure, but what could she possibly do with it to keep herself safe? Short of being caught in some kind of fire, the best she could hope for was to die at a pleasant temperature. She stared at the little nails in her forearms. What had Mac called them? "Training wheels?" "I'll need more than that if I'm to be of any use," she muttered to herself. "Let's go," she said, louder now so both Okame and Kumiko could hear her. "I've got tea in my rooms if anyone wants some." She stepped into the shade of the nearest alley and made sure the Horneater was following closely. Her hand brushed her pocket where the Stranger's coin sat heavy and cold. She remembered that eye like a night with no stars, and a too-wide smile full of jagged edges. She drew the coin out and the image of the world shimmered in the palm of her hand. Lita flipped it, caught it and looked again. The spiked skull grinned at her knowingly. Anything is attainable, but there is always a price. Lita pocketed the coin and sighed. It seemed it was time to start paying. @Invocation @kenod

The tendrils of shadow slowly receded, seeming almost to dissolve where they touched the deepest shadows of the tunnels. Still, a strange feeling remained in the air around them, like the darkness was merely nursing its wounds, not truly gone. Sound echoed oddly, the lapping of water at their ankles sometimes loud, sometimes soft. There was a thickness to the air, as though everyone's ears were padded with cotton. Aldred ran up to the group, noticing Thorstein standing with a glowing bag and a long axe. "You found us then? Good," he said, panting. Aldred jerked on the wrist of Karl, who staggered after him dumbly, eyes wide in terror. "Reiner tried to make a break for it after Mutig charged off - unsurprising. He ran down that way," he pointed back the way he'd come, "and... well I'm not sure, actually." There had been a high, keening scream, then - nothing. No splash of a body falling limp into the water. No fevered panting of a young man caught off guard. No low moans of the wounded. Silence. He and Karl had stood there in the deepening gloom, listening. Then, the thrumming of magic had reached a deafening roar, and Aldred caught sight of something moving out of the corner of his eye. It hung in the air like a fat, black spider, shuddering along in an odd, fitful gait. One moment, it was far ahead, then, behind, and then, back where it started. He could never get a firm look at it, try as he might. When he heard the commotion further off, he'd lost sight of it, only seeing its tendril-like legs or sharp protrusions fading back into the shadow. "I think I might have caught a look at it," Aldred said, letting go of Karl's wrist. The boy stood there, staring at the wall, clearly in shock. "Did anyone hear it speak? They mentioned it speaking to them, demanding food and the like. Did it speak to any of you?"

Sorry! I was kind of controlling it but I don't have any real firm lore on this thing, except in order to kill it you need to show it it's own reflection. I didn't want people to have to wait on me to move the thing around, so I left it pretty open-ended. However, I'll step in and get things going there. Apologies, I've been neglecting this to work on pet projects! Also, @xinoehp512 and @MacThorstenson please feel free to come up with something, compare notes, etc. I am totally okay with whatever we end up doing with origins. I'll add you to the PM Mac. I'd love to be involved but have no firm ideas I'm married to for lore, world origin, etc. so I'm just here to help create!

Renata opened her pack and removed her other spheres. The combined Stormlight cast a decent amount of illumination around her, and set the many small shards of glass on the ground glittering. "We should wait till morning," she said. "Then some of us should scout the area. Get some kind of map going. Perhaps find a river, or some hills or cliffs to climb and see if there is a town nearby. The Doctor mentioned a 'native population' didn't he? Someone lives here."

Are everyone's spheres out of stormlight by now @Voidus? Or do some still have light?

Ooh I like it! I’m on mobile rn so I can’t be super eloquent but I am glad we’re discussing the origin of the world and some mythology. I think eventually this will become quite relevant if we want to create a larger conflict arc or any problems with one of the magic systems. I am super interested in discussing and fleshing this out whether in character or just here!

Renata cringed at the sudden, terrible scream, shutting her eyes as the light from the orb flashed in a blinding burst. Even still, white spots popped and danced before her like spirits in the misty darkness. She felt around blindly for her notebook and dropped sphere; thankfully, both were not far from her. The scream still hung in the air, high and awful. She sat there, clutching her belongings, until part of her vision cleared. The Stormlight in her mark was barely there anymore, illuminating a small piece of the darkness with a sullen little light that hardly reached past her hand. And still, there was the screaming. Renata slipped her pack on and grabbed her little knife out of her boot. She edged around the pile of rubble, keeping her back to it so no one, or no thing, could get behind her. It was dark now, true dark, and the air felt thick with mist and dust and the cold piercing ring of that scream. "Take that storming Blade out!" she hissed at where she imagined Hellbent might be. "There won't be a thing for miles that hasn't heard that wailing!" @Ark1002

Suddenly, Lita felt her pocket twitch. Fine for now. Have sent word to Mac's department though they likely already knew given how extravagant this is. You did the right thing. Lita felt her her whole body relax, only then realizing just how tightly she had been holding herself. She'd also started tapping brass unconsciously, which she eased off until it was just a trickle, keeping her warm with her tin on. Now is not the time to get sloppy, she told herself. "Yes," she answered the Fox woman. It was a testament to her stress level that she was barely curious about the woman's nature. "We head back for now. If Laurelai gets in trouble, I'll know. And so will plenty of others, I imagine." Others who had more than tin, brass feruchemy, and two dozen rusting thumbtacks in their arms.

Renata ducked behind a large pile of rubble when she saw Hellbent stab his Shardblade towards the glowing orb of light. "Are you trying to get us all killed?" She called out from behind the pile of bricks, clutching at her pack and trying to get as low to the ground as possible. First the tower, now this? She had a decent view of Doctor Nitinyas' body from her vantage point. He hung there like a gruesome pennant, hand raised, face frozen in terror. The same expression, Renata thought, still hunkered down behind the rubble pile. She dug around in her pack for her notebook, flipping it open to the sketch she had done. Yes, definitely the same. These people had seen something as they died. But what? Renata hadn't even heard a cremling, let alone animals or people, since they had emerged from the cellar. Something in Shadesmar, then? Some kind of spren? Let's hope it stays there.

Renata followed the two of them around piles of rubble. A small, white hand peeked out from beneath what looked like the lounge room wall. A shudder ran over Renata's skin as she pictured the look on the faces of all the dead servers. She'd done a quick sketch of it in her notebook, though she'd have rather banished it from her mind entirely. "Do you think it's some sort of fabrial?" She asked Wilhelm as they neared the light. If so, there didn't seem to be any Stormlight to re-power it. Renata was trying not to think about what they would do when all her spheres ran out of light. Torches were an obvious choice, but fire was easier to spot and harder to control. @I think I am here.

Renata thought, chewing her lip. "Doesn't sound too safe to climbing around on this mess," she said finally. Then, she hooked her thumb over her shoulder where Hellbent was searching for the source of the light. "Why don't we ask him to do it?"

Renata whirled around, almost hitting the man with her outstretched arm. It was Wilhelm, an odd look on his face. Well, odder than usual. "Damnation!" she hissed at him, heart pounding. She kept walking, matching Wilhelm's pace so he couldn't get behind her again. She heard Lizanne call out next, her shape materializing out of the misty gloom. "Are you alright?" Lizanne said. Renata nodded. "Yes, I got out of the way just in time. Is anyone trapped down there in the cellar?" @Sorana

Renata peeked over the top of her travel bag, which she had quickly thrown over her head as the tower came crashing down. The massive cloud of dust had finally started to clear, swirling into the misty night air. She could still see a dim light flickering weakly where the entrance lounge had once been. Curiosity tugged at her, and she stood, walking over to her knife and sheathing it back in her boot. Renata held her sphere aloft, the white light of the clearmark diffusing around her in a soft, dusty glow. She could barely make out the figure of someone stalking towards the light in the fallen tower. "Hello?" Renata called, coughing a little and trying to wave away some of the dust as she continued walking. Only one survivor? She thought, panic beginning to set in. Just one? "Is anyone else out there?"

Lita stood two blocks away from the PlasmaCore building, watching the giant sky ship and doing her best not to panic. ”We left Laurelai,” she said to Okame. “We just left her there!” She’d sent Lita an Alleycant message indicating they head back to the Alleys, which meant she probably wasn’t dead. That was good, because if she was dead then it was probably Lita's fault. She didn’t want to think about what her punishment might be for a failure like that. Out of habit, Lita’s hand strayed to the coin. She took it out, staring at its face as though she expected it to do... something. It had gone back to the scales again, and it had regained its unnatural coldness. She resisted the urge to throw it at the Horneater, instead sliding it back into her pocket. She’d puzzle over it’s odd behavior later. Lita took out her pen next. Out safe, heading back to the Alleys now. Need help? I might be able persuade Okame to go back for you. Also, sorry. Lita grimaced at the lukewarm apology, but slipped her pen back into her pocket anyway. She gave a single, sharp sigh. “Come on,” she said to Okame, walking towards a nearby alley. “Follow me exactly, and remember, don’t stare into the sky. And try not to burn any holes in anything.” @Invocation @Voidus

Lita thought, then nodded. To ruin with subtlety. She was used to back room dealings, shadowy corners, the slip of the hand over a glass of brandy. Not... whatever was happening here. Besides, it's not like anyone here didn't know who she was working for "I think we make a nice addition to the decor up here," Lita said, giggling with slightly more hysteria than she intended. The heat in her pocket had cooled a bit, though the coin was still hot. A warning, perhaps? That would be useful, though its reluctance to cool left Lita anxious, watching the man on the balcony with wary eyes.

That's the most I've ever heard him speak at once, Lita thought, almost laughing at the absurdity of her surprise. "Well you were the one that waltzed into the Alleys carrying two corpses and asking to join," Lita muttered under her breath. "Everyone's looking at us, sodding blackened ruin. If we get out of this I'll have to resign as the world's most un-subtle spy." She looked for the man in the black coat back on their balcony. Where had he even come from? And Lita could have sworn she'd heard a few explosions from outside the building. She sent a quick message in Alleycant, careful to keep the pen inside her pocket as she moved it in case it fell down into the milling crowd. "I think you can put us down now," she said. "Not back up there though, somewhere closer to the exit. And further from that fellow."

Lita shrieked at the sudden change in direction, pocket still hot. She was in... the air. She was in the air. "By the Survivor's bloody spear," she hissed at Okame. "I knew this was going to end poorly!" She scanned the crowd below, searching for Laurelai. Wherever you are, get out now. "We need to find someplace safe to Alleytravel. I've had enough partying for one day I think, how about you?"

A sudden, odd warmth touched Lita's thigh, heavy in her pocket. The coin? Lita frowned a bit, not taking her eyes off the man who had sat down one table over. She flared her tin, catching the sound of a disturbance out in the lobby. Suddenly, a man sprinted inside the doors from the lobby, looking terrified. Lita tensed, fingers tapping Okame's leg under the table, then she nodded her head just barely towards the man. Rusts, she thought. Oh rusts. The warmth in her pocket continued to increase, almost painful now. What in all the hells? @Invocation
