  1. Aln thought about it for a moment, then nodded. "Sure." His secretiveness made her wary, but he hadn't done anything to make her distrust him. This would be a good chance to assess his skills, and generally find more about him. She looked back at Folorian, wishing that the group was standing closer together. She kept missing pieces of what people were saying, and she didn't doubt that it looked a little ridiculous, the way she had to keep constantly glancing around the room. She nevertheless managed to deduce most of what he said, and responded, "I'll fill both of you in on the way". She was glad that Folorian was coming. His presence made Surgebinding more difficult, it was true, but it was worth it to have someone around that she could count on. @Ashbringer @mathiau @Gears
  2. Aln glanced over at the door, and her eyes found the letter. She recognized the seal - it was best not to delay reading this particular communication. She broke it open and quickly scanned the lines. It was brief, and as usual was left unsigned. She frowned as she read it. Anomalies were common in a city built on Investiture, but this was deemed important enough for her to be contacted. It seemed to require prompt action. She turned back to face the room. "I'm afraid something's just come up that requires my attention. I apologize for cutting the conversation short." She handed a sheet of paper to Dr. Gears, which read: I, the undersigned, hereby pledge myself to the Guild of Scholars, and promise to strive to gather and spread knowledge throughout the Alleyverse and corresponding worlds. Signed, ______________ "Sign this and you're in the Guild," she told him. "You have access to the books in the library, though I would ask that you leave a note if you find it necessary to remove any from the building. There are also some quarters in the back if you wish to stay here." Aln looked at Ben. She felt bad for dashing off and leaving him, but already her curiosity tugged at her. What was so interesting about a deadspot in a garden? "If you need a place to stay, you're welcome to a room as well. I'll be back here soon enough. I suppose you could even come along, if you want - it's just Guild business." She grabbed her satchel as she spoke, and tossed her phoenix mask onto the desk. As far as she was concerned, the festival was over. It was time to get back to work. The emptiness in her stomach reminded her that she still hadn't eaten anything, and she snagged a cereal bar from a drawer. "Folorian, do you want to come along? I might be able to use another set of eyes on this one." @Invocation @mathiau @Ashbringer @Gears
  3. Same to you! If we're allowed to vote on our own contest, mine's probably going to yours, honestly.
  4. Here's my roast. Sorry that it's so late - it took much longer than I expected. Note: it contains a few spoilers for Mistborn Era 2 and SA.
  5. It's nice that a thread exists where I can post my existential ramblings. For example, how much of who we are is based on the experiences we've had? If someone completely erased my memory, would any of my personality survive? On the topic of memory, it's crazy how much we rely on it. Imagine that an alien appeared, then wiped your memory of the encounter and vanished. Despite the fact that you lived through it, you would have no inkling that it had happened. Theoretically, that could have just happened to you. Also, due to speed of light delays, everything we experience is technically the past. It's a minimal amount of time, but it's there, which means that even current events are, in a way, memories. And what separates the past from the present, anyway? Is there a certain amount of time that's the cutoff? Like, 3 seconds ago is the past, but after that is the present? Can you ever really say that it's "now"?

  7. At this point I might as well embrace the creepy and join in. Overactive Imagination When I pass that one dark corner of the house, I always quicken my step. It's ridiculous, I know; how would the nook transform with the approach of night? Yet I'm compelled to reaffirm what I already know and check. The shape illuminated by the flashlight beam echoes my scream.

  9. Odium might not necessarily have had to Splinter in order to make some deal with the Heralds. We see him bargaining with Taravangian, after all. I think that Odium could easily have been involved in the human's flight from Ashyn, for example. They made some sort of deal with him that allowed them to leave, and possibly gave Odium greater access to Roshar in the process. It would explain their status as the first Voidbringers. At some point, they switched their allegiance to Honor, and the Heralds could have led this movement.
  10. I think the Windrunners could certainly become people that completely remove people's freedom to avoid possibility of harm (which is just a rewording of what you said). I also think that they could be a force in enabling villains. If someone is seen as unable to protect themselves, they coulod easily step in, and the "as long as it is right" at the end of "I will protect even those I hate" is ambiguous enough to allow a lot of problems.
  11. Testing an anomalous object. Has he created a method of traveling between worlds that uses no Investiture? Aln regarded the man. He was clearly reluctant to say more about that subject, but perhaps he would be willing to elaborate on the nature of his Earth. Aln had long wondered at the abundance of similar "Earthworlds", and another data point could be quite valuable. They all seemed to share a certain set of characteristics, but she had found only one other that appeared to lack prominent Investiture. Before she could question him on that, though, Ben stepped into her line of view, in the process of asking a question. "...I be answering this too?" He held the mobile phone limply at his side, so she assumed that he had finished contacting the Watch. The device also did not appear to be flashing, so he was likely referring to the questions that she had posed to Dr. Gears rather than an incoming call. The inquiry took her a bit by surprise. She used the brief questionnaire as a way of learning something about prospective members of the Guild. Did this mean that he was also interested in joining? Or perhaps he was simply offering some information about himself. "You're not required to," she told him, "unless you're applying to the Guild. Anything you wish to share, however, is quite welcome." And you're welcome to join the Guild, she added in her head. The organization was small, and she was always on the lookout for prospective recruits. She didn't want half-hearted members, though, so as a rule she waited until the other brought it up. @mathiau @Gears @Ashbringer
  12. Interesting, Aln thought, regarding the bird. She had always hoped to run some controlled experiments with an aviar; perhaps Dr. Gears would be willing to assist. "Thank you," said Aln, continuing the questionnaire. "And if you wouldn't mind, anything you can tell me about your past would be much appreciated. For example, Where are you from?" @Gears @mathiau @Ashbringer
  13. The light on Aln's wrist flashed again as a third person entered the room. This one, however, was familiar. "Folorian," Aln said, with some relief. She hadn't seen if he had escaped unscathed from the battle. "You counted correctly. This is Dr. Gears; he wants to join the Guild." Aln addressed Dr. Gears. "What investiture do you possess, if any, and what is your background in scholarship?" @mathiau @Gears

  15. I've always thought that Fleet was intended to be a lesson about accepting your failure, which is certainly something that Kaladin needs. I mean, the premise of the story is that Fleet tries to do something impossible, and failed, but the important part is that he tried. This obviously has implications for Kaladin's story, what with his failure to swear the 4th ideal, as well as the others things that he blames himself for. It's probably something that he'll think back to at some point, but I wouldn't guess that it foreshadows any specific event.
  16. Aln began to respond, but was cut off by the entrance of another man, who appeared to recognize the first. Aln waited for them to finish their exchange, then responded, "Yes, this is the place to join the Guild. I'm always happy to have more Scholars here. I rarely deny people admittance, but if you wouldn't mind answering a few questions first, that would be useful. Firstly, what are your names?" As she finished this comment, she glanced back around at Ben, hoping that he had successfully contacted the watch. Instead, he was staring at the phone with a look of confusion on her face. Aln suddenly remembered that most people, particularly newcomers, would not have encountered a phone, and stepped over to take it from his hand. "You put in the number," she said, entering the one corresponding to the city watch, "then press this button. Once someone on the other end has answered it, you can speak through it." She handed it back. "Thank you. Just one moment." She turned back to the applicants expectantly. @Ashbringer @Gears @Channelknight Fadran
  17. Where no man has gone before It's not anything like I expected, space travel. It's mostly waiting, watching numbers on a console tick past, anticipating the next grainy transmission. I see no alien ships, just distant glimmers of light. The hero of all mankind, alone in silence and my own repetitive thoughts. 13 years to go.
  18. A light flashed on the fabrial attached to Aln's arm. She glanced at it, then turned towards the door. Sure enough, it had just swung open. She made a mental note to congratulate Trent on his design as she took in the stranger's appearance. He was tall, thin, and angular, draped in a long lab coat and carrying a clipboard. "Yes, that is correct," she responded, matching his formal tone. "My name is Alanis Sheneth. How may I help you?" @Ashbringer
  19. Color returned to the guard's face as the last of his wounds sealed. Aln stepped away, drained, and wished she could join the man in sleep. She shook her head and uncovered the other lamps in the room, flooding the building with light. For a moment she considered putting a Lightweaving over the windows to give the illusion that the guild remained empty, but she dismissed the idea. If anyone really did wish to seek her out on a festival night, it would likely be best to receive them. Aln steadied herself on a bookshelf, then made her way to her desk. Some rummaging later, she emerged with a small mobile phone, luckily with some charge left. She preferred spanreeds for instant communication, generally; the cell service in the Alleycity could be unreliable, and her boon didn't work over electronics. Still, a phone could be useful in emergencies. Aln handed it to Ben. "Thank you for your help. If you would be willing to assist me with one more thing, I believe that the City Watch should be informed of the current disaster." @Ashbringer (Also @Gears if you still want to show up)
  20. Aln felt a surge of relief when she finally sighted the familiar, darkened structure of the guild ahead. Facing away from it, she couldn't see what was happening in the fight. For a moment she felt guilty for running away, for abandoning the others to their fate. But, no that was ridiculous. It was hardly as if she could have helped apprehend the criminal. They didn't even need healing; her observations pegged them all as other Radiants. And besides, there was a man who obviously needed help directly in front of her. It was pointless to feel guilty when she had obviously made the rational choice. Completely pointless. Aln pushed away her thoughts and tried the door with her elbow. It creaked open silently, revealing a deserted room. Of course, she thought in irritation. Because why would anything go well tonight? Perhaps it was her own fault for asking that girl to watch an empty library during a festival. Still, she could at least have locked up behind her when she left. Aln shouldered her way inside, awkwardly holding the door long enough for the three of them to enter. She deposited the unconscious guard gingerly in an armchair, and pulled the cover off of the nearest lamp. It was securely locked, of course; Aln kept the majority of the guild's funds in the wall fixtures, and theft would be inconvenient, to say the least. The stormlight paid no heed to the barrier, however, as she enhaled it and resumed healing the man before her. @Ashbringer
  21. Aln stared across the square at the battle. Several more figures had entered the fight, and as she watched, one of them was launched into the sky. Was that the Dustbringer? It wa hard to tell. Aln focused back in her task. "Trust me, Ben, we won't want to be anywhere near here. I have some more Stormlight at my guild - it's this way." Heaving the guard's body awkwardly between them [note: this is assuming that Byron cooperates. If he doesn't, ignore this], she began leading the way through the thinning crowd, calling as she did so, "Be careful - stay away from that part of the festival. There's a convict on the loose." @Gears @Ashbringer @mathiau
  22. Althea teleported behind the van and began walking down the street. She called something back to Aln, but at this distance the words were indistinct. Moments later, the Elsecaller was joined by another figure, unfamiliar, carrying a gleaming Blade. Aln tensed, worried that it was an ambush, but the figure simply began to speak to Althea, using words that were too far away for Aln to read. Aln cautiously began to move forwards, keeping the whole scene in view. It doesn't look like she needs my help much, she told Pel. As she squinted towards the scars of division that marked the street, a flicker of movement caught the corner of her eye. It was the corpse of the guard that had recently been thrown. Except.. it wasn't a corpse. The man's arm twitched again, and she dropped to his side, hastily pouring Stormlight into the man. He had a gaping wound in his side - another minute and he surely would have died of it. Even with most of her Stormlight depleted, the man was pale and unresponsive. If left on the battlefield, he didn't stand a chance. "Ben," she called urgently, "would you help me carry this man to safety? He's still alive!" @Ashbringer
