  1. Acacia stared, quite rudely, as the girl conjured floating letters around the room, abeling each person with their name. "So..you're not a ghost, then?" she asked. You're in a parallel universe, she reminded herself sternly. Be prepared for the unusual. "In that case," she continued briskly, not waiting for an answer, "it's quite rude to pretend to be one in such an ambiguous manner. If you're going to appear out of thin air, you should at least wear a sheet and make the appropriate 'oooh'ing noises so that people know what they're dealing with." @Voidus @Gears @Arlin
  2. "I'll certainly try my best," she quipped, and grabbed a pen from a desk. "So you write about the 'spooky stuff' - that's what, murders?" She slid the pen's ink cartridge into a pocket and replaced the pen. "Or is it reports of the supernatural? It seems you've got a lot of that around here." Even as she said that, something flickered in the corner of her eye, and she jumped when a young girl suddenly appeared by the water cooler, staring her in the eye. Acacia bit back a scream, and gestured shakily to the apparition. "Um.. you guys can see her, right?" @Gears @Voidus
  3. "Acacia Smedry," she said, bowing elaborately. "It's a pleasure to meet you. Which one of these mismatched desks is yours?"
  4. "The new editor would be me," Acacia returned cheerfully. "That means I get an extra cupcake, right?"
  5. She returned the grin. "In that case, you're someone I'll get along well with. The woman who hired me said that there'd be a few more reporters, though. It seems reasonable to wait for them before deciding who to bother."
  6. "Huh," she said, "I guess that makes sense. To be honest, I've never run a newspaper before. I think that your job is to bother strangers until they tell you something interesting, right?"
  7. "Yeah, it seems like hiring's been slow. Did your eyes just change color?"
  8. Kiss Ruin, marry the Night Watcher, kill Odium. KMK: Adolin, Renarin, and Kaladin
  9. Acacia was slightly disappointed by his reaction. She was hoping that the comment would have caused more confusion - normally it had people looking over their shoulders all day. He would be a hard one to rattle, it seemed. "I suppose you can pick a desk," she said. "if you're a reporter, anyway. What's your name?"
  10. Acacia stood and stumbled directly into his path, bumping into him. "Sorry," she said. "I'm Acacia, the new editor of this place. As far as I know I'm the only one here, but you can never be sure. There could always be people listening in the walls."
  11. "And do you need help?" Aln added, remembering the first signal. @Invocation @Gears
  12. Thank you - I'll be sure to do that next time. Apologies for bothering you while you were away.
  13. Gets a life on the run. Inserts supervillain monologue.
  14. @Sorana Just making sure that you (or another mod - I'm not sure who to tag) saw the above three character submissions.
  15. Aln gasped when the sphere started flashing in Morse Code. This confirmed both sentience and the ability to siphon Investiture, or at least Stormlight. Plus, Morse code implied some sort of connection to Earth or the Alleyplanet. The aluminum was likely interfering with the previously demonstrated ability to project emotions. Aln watched carefully as Dr. Gears asked his question. His suggestion of a BioChromatic Entity still had merit, but she couldn't help but wonder. There were all sorts of mythological stories about someone turning to stone - though it's true that she knew of no magic system explicitly capable of such, aside from fatal soulcasting. Perhaps it was best not to jump to conclusions. She replaced the drained sphere with a full one in preparation for the statue's response. "A confirmation of sentience," she said aloud. "And at least basic knowledge of Earth, which is unusual for an awakened object. And a BioChromatic Entity similar to those previously seen would have been able to reach out sooner. What else might it be?" @Gears @Invocation
  16. "A Type IV Biochromatic Entity would certainly explain the unusual interaction with other forms of Investiture, as well as the mental projection. I think that theory has merit, though it's not conclusive. We know frustratingly little about such entities, after all." As she talked, Aln walked over and removed a sphere from a lamp on the wall. "How does this statue react to a contained source of pure Investiture, such as an infused sphere?" In answer to her own question, she peeled back a bit of the aluminum and placed the sphere on the small amount of exposed stone. @Invocation @mathiau
  17. Thank you!
  18. Aln looked around. There wasn't really a great lifedraining statue nook in here. "Probably the back room," she decided. Having this thing in the open didn't seem the wisest of choices. She led them to the small meeting room in the back and gingerly set the statue down on the table. She made sure to leave the door open so that she could keep an eye on anyone else coming in. The guard that she had healed was gone now, as was Ben. Hopefully neither one had gotten themselves into additional trouble. Aln suddenly realized that she was a little disappointed not to have seen the teenager here. Had she grown fond of him so quickly? She turned back to the statue, refocusing her mind. "So what do you make of this statue?" she asked Dr. Gears. They would have to unwrap it to observe its effects eventually, but she wanted his take on it first. @mathiau @Invocation
  19. "That's the plan," she replied, maneuvering the statue out of the hole. No doubt they attracted quite a few stares as they began to carefully transport the aluminum shape through the crowded festival streets. @mathiau
  20. I've certainly found myself looking much more closely at background characters since Sanderson. And I'll often try to fit various magic systems into Realmatic Theory or connect them to Sanderson magic systems. A lot of his concepts apply really well to other fantasy worlds. I often look at D&D spells in terms of Connection, Identity, and Intent.
  21. I like "manifest" as well. It isn't unreasonable that they have different words for types of spren, though. Even if they don't know exactly what they are, everyone seems to know of their existence, and of the significance of most basic types. Some ideas: A burst of Gloryspren A cloud of Cryptics A crawl of Fearspren A tide of Angerspren A gust of Windspren A storm of Creationspren
  22. Aln relaxed as the odd tingling faded. She rubbed her forehead, feeling suddenly tired. Had a restful festival really been too much to ask? Trent would likely lecture her about this later; he insisted that she worked too much, and had made her promise to take the evening off. When she stared at the aluminum bundle before her, though, her exhaustion was replaced by excited interest. For a discovery like this one, Trent would surely forgive her a single night of missed sleep. She stepped forward and grunted as she lifted one end of the statue. "Care to help me carry this?" she called to the other two scholars. @Gears @mathiau
  23. I'd like to submit a second character, please. She's going to be used in the AV Post thread that's soon to be revived. @Sorana @Voidus @I think I am here. (Apologies if I tagged the wrong person here)
