What makes people do that? I mean, the fundamental alternative is death, but if I can be a vehicle I ca at least go somewhere. No, that is its flashy use. The basic role of Verdant is proto-Soulcasting. Here as later on Roshar we find a way how you can have a preindustrial economy without 90% of the people toiling on the fields living a short and brutish life. Secondly we have an immensely useful ability in hostile environment. Verdant basically answers the question how people travel in Shadesmar.

The orthography of Terris looks like being based on Welsh to me. In that case the 'w' is basically /u/ like in "bush". Training with Transportation is truly dangerous. If you train and fail with Adhesion, well, you may drop a chair or a pebble. Gravitation, unless you do something stupid, you fall down, whereever down may be, which won't harm somebody holding Stormlight. Even with Division, if you burn off your hand, it will hurt, but you are a Knight Radiant, enough Stormlight right away will fix it. Transportation, though, if you do it wrong, you get stuck in Shadesmar and drown in beads. Forch, Telsin, Razal, ... -
Passion implies a desire for change in the majority of cases. Ruin likes change. So indirectly he likes passion. One might see change as superset of their Intent. Mercy. Ambition. Devotion. Dominion. Preservation.

Yes. It was a book about exploration, in one form literally in the other scientifically. Kaladin's part did not fit. And am I the only one who could help seeing Bruce Willis doing these sneaky things climbing around? Arbitrary. Somebody had to die, it was him. I think you are correct. No, one of the "good people" had to die. And, to be blunt and extremely unpopular, Kaladin surviving this felt forced.

Why does everyone hate Oathbringer?
Oltux72 replied to Thaidakar the Ghostblood's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I suppose because it is the book of the series that is closest to an old style SF story in the sense that it is driven by plot in general. You have nothing like the story of Kaladin going from a branded slave to a savior figure in it and where you have something similar, it is ... sliced off. Oathbringer is a story about a war with the main protagonists in it. The other books are stories about the protagonists during, not even for the most part in, a war. I would not be surprised by a strong correlation of liking Oathbringer and disliking The Way of Kings and vice versa. -
aether Reguarding the Aethers [AoN spoilers]
Oltux72 replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, we cannot rule out that the aether are those of the Partinel version. Yes, there is one further possible mention of aethers other than in Oathbringer and by name in Rhythm of War, which points at the Aon aethers. It is a long shot, though. We have a broadseet from Era 2, Constructs of Antiquity, mechanical creatures living on Scadrial. That really fits one aether. We are entering territory which is quite devoid of any data. -

I am afraid I have to point out that the Edgedancers are named for their use of Abrasion, not Progression. Also Lift became spontaneously awesome. Progression took time to learn. You could make a case for the dampening voidfabrial affecting the secondary Surges less. If you make the assumption that all Surges are equal. -

Oltux72 replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That's a rather major change. It would mean: the Ghostbloods put the corpse of a sapient being in a show case Khrissalla is on friendly terms with a wannabe slaver They do not. It is just that these versions are incompatible. In addition you have specifically the mess the Anberite makes after disuse and there is no pulp mentioned. -

Just like Aviars or Allomancy. That is the default. As far as I can tell the Partinel Aethers and the Aether of Night aethers are incompatible. The description of the crystal and the mess it makes fits with Aether of Night. Yes. -

Oltux72 replied to KaladinWorldsinger's topic in Stormlight Archive
Not with Stormlight Not to the full extent. Kaladin also uses Gravitation. Just not alone. For all we know Lift could have increased friction. Not necessarily Transportation alone. Cohesion also talks to cognitive and spiritual aspects. Simply too many unknowns. Fused can use some surges with Voidlight Venli can use Cohesion with Voidlight Venli cannot use Cohesion with Stormlight Venli can use some Transportation with Voidlight Kaladin can use Adhesion with Stormlight Kaladin + Teft cannot use Gravitation alone Kaladin can use Gravitation + Adhesion If you go with the observations only, for all we know Abrasion just does not work while that fabrial is active. I do not assume that. But it is an assumption. If we wanted to show that Abrasion works, we would have no evidence. Looking at the variables we have: source of power - Fused versus Nahel bond source of power - three different lights Surge to be used Too many unknowns. -

You can't even say that. She did not teleport or go to Shadesmar. We are adding an alarming number of unknowns here. Technically we could not even rule out that each Order has a primary and a secondary Surge and only one of them works fully. -

Oltux72 replied to KaladinWorldsinger's topic in Stormlight Archive
You cannot use Lift to draw conclusions from. She does not use Stormlight. That invalidates all conclusions as Venli could use Cohesion with Voidlight, but not with Stormlight. The fuel matters, beyond a doubt. -

The fourth ideal. That was why he showed more abilities. He had advanced. -
You are right in your assessment. Yet your question is also easy to answer. It is at this time merely a plot device to keep Kaladin in Urithiru, where he does Die Hard - Roshar edition. It may lead to more, but it has not.
-
They'd have to be sure he'd get it. A long shot. The Vanishers had two, Miles included. No. You just tell them that allomantic hostages are more valluable. In fact that's what they'll assume. So you do not think that the Set got hemalurgic knowledge out of obtaining a copy of Spook's book?
-
Nearly all natural animal spren are capable of more generalized feats of that kind. If rain can attract a rainspren, it has the ability to detect rain. Even more remarkable for those associated with emotions. Alerters are really unremarkable I am afraid.

aether Reguarding the Aethers [AoN spoilers]
Oltux72 replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
They are. In aggregate. Like the Sleepless. One bud/bug is stupid. The aggregate/swarm is sapient. Two of them did. Two did not and the other two were unknown. Indeed. -
aether Reguarding the Aethers [AoN spoilers]
Oltux72 replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think you are confused by two uses of the concept of aether. One of the aethers as far as we have seen one, is a portable crystal. Aethers grant Invested Arts or aspect of an Invested Art. That is another discussion. We must assume that they are Invested to a greater extent than an animal or human would be. So what happens if you put together a mountain of these crystals? Do you get something close to a perpendicularity? In addition, Investiture seeks sapience. If the pieces do not bond sapient creatures, will you eventually get a sapient being, likely also confusingly called an aether? -
Possibly just the passage of time. Elantris has stood long enough to reflect the pronounciation of a bygone era.
-
Since he does provide an Invested Art, what but Voidbinding would that art be? Now, Khrissalla is quite specific that there are ten levels of Voidbinding and she mentions fabrials as recent, hence we must assume that her knowledge is current as of Oathbringer. That mean that she knows Regals and does not identify them as Voidbinders. How does she know what Voidbinders are Rosharan scholars know, it is just not common knowledge she has access to archives in Shadesmar she is old enough to to have been on Roshar before Aharietiam

They are the original. Plus we know that Honor feared Surgebinders repeating Ashyn. Ashyn. Yes. we know spren that can decrease mass, create lightning, detect Active Investiture. I'd say they are something fundamentally different. Regals Singer Forms Greatshells and related forms using the Rhytms Rhyshadiums Horneater temporal bonds Purelake fish Aimians The Highstorms animal spren sensing natural phenomena the Purelake itself That list is possibly not exhaustive. Roshar is not exactly short of Invested phenomena. What you count is kind of arbitrary. And we can quote Khrissalla herself: (Oathbringer - Ars Arcanum) What is Wyndle called routinely to his constant irritation? True. Unless the Voidspren became voidfabrials. If you go by that logic, Sja-anat is even closer to the Nightwatcher, just operating on spren rather than humans.

Nobody would have cared if they had just taken allomantic miscreant, criminals or provincials. There is no point in creating a vague misdirection, if you weren't noticed in the first place. You can lie only if you have an idea about what you ought to lie. The specific list precludes that. You'd give your people a list of known allomancers. You need to keep your power after you've gotten it. Secondly, we know for sure that their plans are changing. In fact radically and genocidally so.
-
Cojoined gems are a result of the property of spren. Nothing of them is an Invested Art of its own. The rest can likely be explained by spren powers. We know from Regals, greatshells and skyeels that there are powers beyond the 16 Surges.

No, they do not. Dalinar does. Ishar gets the same effect without oaths. Yes, the oaths are intrinsic to the Knights Radiant, who get things from being Knights Radiant, blades and plate, basically. Oaths are not related to Surgebinding as such. Yes, Knights Radiant become better Surgebinders with progression of their oaths. But that is likely historically wrong. They get less restrictions. But they are not. Fabrials are an automation of something else. As far as we know anything you can do with a fabrial is taken from another Invested Art. Which Khrissalla speculated not to be the true "Lifelightish" equivalent to Surgebinding. The problem is that at least one of them, Yelig-nar, does nothing of that. And they fear the Voidbinders as separate from the Unmade. In quantum mechanics the means by which electromagnetic forces work are virtual photons. Things like the Casimir force suggest that they are more than a mathematical fiction.

Did humans on Ashyn predate the arrival of Odium in the Rosharan system? If so, what were the religions among them?
