Ask Axelius Anything* (AKA Sanderson vs. Tolkien Duel)
Furamirionind replied to Sherlock Holmes's topic in AMAs
As please explain how Tom Bombadil would be more powerful than Alcatraz? If we are looking at this a Pokemon style fight, Alcatraz's first and only move would be to "Break oponents connection the their magic, the physical world, and anything else possible to break about them". Remember, he did touch a chicken once and made it think it was a cat. He could alternatively make Tom think he is a rabbit. Which would then run from a fight... It has been a while since I read LotR. So I searched up Tom on Wikipedia. He sounds cool, but according to Wikipedia we dont know much about him... (I have not read much of the silmarailian though, so if he is in that, I am not familiar with it...) -

More evidence to the case that this scenario (unlike the cosmere) is just plainly fictional. -

*Alcatraz walk up to Smaug, Smaug tries to squash Alcatraz. Alcatraz breaks Smaug's connection to all three realms (spiritual, cognitive, & physical)* Wow... In which book did that happen? Because if that happened in a book, that would really prove your point... Otherwise... Just because we have only met 9 shards doesn't mean the others are not characters. We know from the books that there are 16 shards. So obviously they are still characters too... It is probably a good thing Alcatraz isnt in the cosmere... Because he might be more powerful than Adonalsium... -

I think this is a decent argument that Adonalsium's intent involved unity of some sort. As Adonalsium had to unite all of the shards/powers. I think that this can be dismissed because of the God Beyond. But even without the God Beyond, I don't think just because something has an intent means it is a part of something greater. An intent of Unity could be because the shard's job is to hold them together. I would say, in general, humans are similar to shards with intents. We just call it a worldview instead. I see the world through a certain lens, and it clouds my decisions. I think Adonalsium must have seen what was happening. It must have known that they were going to kill it, and couldn't do anything to protect itself. Maybe because killing/aggression wasn't in its intent or maybe because it wanted to shatter. Either way, I would not be surprised if Adonalsium's influence was still around to this day, executing his plan to reunite. Just like how Fuzz said that he, Leras, had already been killed. He just remained to attempt the plan.

SO MANY "ICK" SOUNDS IN THIS SENTANCE. No one can survive facing the Stick. (with a capital "S") (I look forward to these so much now) I will (of course) vote for the one I think is better, but the jokes and rhymes are so good!- 2784 replies

No... You got 14 upvotes... I would say you deserved everyone of them... But I am starting to think the more we try to convince you you were good, the more convinced you are in it being bad... So... You are right! I can't believe you got a single upvote! : P- 2784 replies

Ok, I think of we really want to answer this incredibly important question, we should take the most powerful beings from each universe and compare them (their powers) to a thing in the real world... Like humans. Then give them a power rating based on that. We should probably leave out Ea and God Beyond as we can probably say safely that they will balance each other out. Also, everyone forgot the Smedrys! Sure, they are not the most powerful bunch... But Alcatraz and Gandpa Smedry are both insanely powerful. (We still dont know the limitations on Alcatraz's power...) And he might even be able to go up against Ea with that power. Oh, Ea tries to destroy Grandpa Smedry? It doesn't work. It will just be postponed and happen late. Still though, we should ignore the powers of all-powerful-beings. As they won't get us any farther in this discussion. -
Tournament: Cosmere Character Roast Battles
Furamirionind replied to Ashspren's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
I am truly impressed by how amazing these have been so far. First round and second. Not everyone can make it to the finals, but I think everyone was that good. Everyone who created a "roast" is a winner in my book. Even if I read one that I though was horrible (which I haven't), they would still be a winner. It is easy to criticise our own work, not realizing how ingenious it was. In my opinion, that is what helps us get better... But it is still good to realize at least some level of ingenousness. : )- 2784 replies

Lol, being on a Brandon Sanderson fan site, i think you are fighting a loosing battle @AxeliustheGreat Lol. True. I personally think that Brandon Sanderson would win, but a big part of that is I liked LotR until I started reading Brandon, then I felt that Brandon's writing was a step up and had trouble going back. Completely biased and personal opinion and not based in facts. : ) -
No, no... you have the wrong planet there... This is Roshar not Scadrial... We should strive to Cultivate this church and help it grow. Our Branch (Branch with a capital 'B') or otherwise. I Am A Stick!

Let's make wolves the heroes for once
Furamirionind replied to KeyraDK's topic in Introduce Yourself!
Welcome to 17th Shard! Have an upvote! Are you hungry after your upvote? help yourself to a cookie! I completely agree about wolves. They are just trying to survive like every creature, yet we give them a bad rap about it. Similar to how "killer whales" (officially called Orca whales), are called "killer" even though people don't call each other "killer humans"... you humans are weird... Also, if you like role-playing/games you should check out the Alleyverse -
Is Alcatraz Smedry a Hero or Not?
Furamirionind replied to GeneralHZRD's topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
This is a really tough question. Altogether, I think it boils down to him being... Neither. He is a kid that tries to do what is right, just like most people. But he only tries when things are convenient, have no repercussions, or is being pushed by his heroic family. There is a LOT that happens in these books. If you have not read each one in the series so far, you are missing a LOT of crucial information about who each of these characters are. ...Speaking of which, I really need to reread the series as I haven't read it since "The Dark Talent" came out... : ) -
Oathbringer is amazing, you should read it ASAP. (Do not spoil it, it is worth it) really? you are encouraging the abuse we take from lighteyes? wow...
-
I liked Moash… Until Oathbringer anyway (this is a no spoiler board I assume? : ) ) Just be apprehensive, I have been told the cookies usually contain Hemalurgic spikes, and that some people will try to steal your breath. Ha! clever. I must say, I am pretty bad at being a stick so... I am not a good stick...
-
Hi Cadmium Compounded! My life to yours, Your breath become mine? That question is extremely challenging. I would have to say I would choose the radiant (windrunner). Though I like the powers of mistborn more, the idea of bonding a spren is a huge bonus in my mind. I also really identify with the windrunner order... Although we still don't know much about some of the orders...

As far as non Sanderson books, I have read most of the common ones: LotR, Kingkiller, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Giver... etc. I haven't run into "The Books of Umber", I will need to look into it. my favorite characters (of all books) are Kaladin and Prof I do enjoy role playing, though I am inexperienced with it. Vanilla 110% (I don't like chocolate : ) )

I was introduced to Brandon Sanderson a little over 2 years ago by some friends. Since then I have read all published Stormlight, Mistborn, Elantris, Reckoners, and Alcatraz books. I recently found this forum and am excited to be joining the community. I am starting to run out (though not quite out) of Sanderson books left to read. Are there other authors that you would recommend?
-
I don't think Brandon was hiding anything. If you think about it, he said: If we think about the Intent (I can't remember if "intent" should be capitalized or not) of the shards, Feruchemy matches Harmony's Intent, which makes sense as it is a power that comes from the blending of 2 shards. However, though Ruin represents a net loss, Preservation is strange in the books as preservation should represent a net neutral (same as harmony), however seems to represent a net gain. Anyway, as Preservation wants to keep things the same, net neutral also seems to match. It seems to me, that Preservation has closer ties to Feruchemy than Ruin, however, it would ultimately be a power of Harmony. Lastly, I disagree with what Harmonium will end up granting. burning Lerasium grants people the ability to use Allomancy, Hemalurgically using Atium takes all power from an individual and gives it to someone else. Both of these use their own magic systems to grant powers. Therefore, I think Harmonium will grant people the ability to use Feruchemy. If I remember correctly, there are medalions at the end of BoM that grant the ability to use Feruchemy-warmth. I think this is Harmonium (or an alloy with brass at least)
-
Pretty much everything we know about the powers on Scadrial are under the assumption that Preservation represents a net gain, Harmony - Neutral, and Ruin - Negative. However, Harmony truly represents harmony between Preservation and Ruin, not necessarily net neutral. What we know is based on the perspective of in world characters. They believe that Preservation represents a net positive, however, keeping the same, unchanging..."preserving"... That should all be net neutral. So what if Feruchemy is actually of Preservation. This would make more sense to me as it has a net neutral effect, just like what Preservation should be. This would mean that Allomancy would be of Harmony. (it has been a while since I read era 2, so hopefully I am not forgetting something) We always think of Allomancy being net positive, but it feels net negative to me. Just slightly. What happens to the metal after it is burned? It is used up. Power lost, material destroyed. Preservation is neutral, Ruin is negative, and Harmony is in between. Feruchemy is neutral, Hemalurgy is negative, and Allomancy is in between (slightly negative) Brandon even says that he would consider Feruchemy closer to Preservation than ruin: (and everything else he says is the "in world philosophy") https://wob.coppermind.net/events/60-firefight-san-francisco-signing/#e6761 #70 (sorry, I don't know how to quote from here) Does this idea make any sense? is there any information out there that disproves or supports this?
