I don't have much in terms of theories to add, but it's interesting to note that the Thaylens have their "Passions" related to religion.
-
That's a really interesting theory (though yeah, lots of speculation). The idea of the sun here being invested by an opposing shard would add a really cool layer to the mists.

Could "The Lost Metal" be something that is so far back it hasn't appeared in the story at all? It would be a bit hacky, but we do have the WoB: It seems possible (but unlikely) that another shard invested itself on Scadrial at some point long in the past. That could throw a cog in a lot of things happening, so I'm thinking it's unlikely but possible if Brandon was being sneaky with hints.

[OB] Cosmere's biggest threat
Journey Before Pancakes replied to whattheHoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
@Fatikis I think when considering Preservation's influence on Kelsier, you have you think about how he held the power in the first place. He needed a bunch of extra Connection and didn't really have good control over the shard. It's not clear that his use of the Connectionade orb would make the shard holding the same as someone who was naturally Connected; but it definitely implied that he would have needed to change a good amount from the shard he held. Even with the ball of Connection he was barely able to take hold.- 27 replies

I always interpreted that as Elend's intentions with his "book club". They thought they were networking, planning and researching. They seemed to want to make a difference (or at least Elend did). It just seems like they got really caught up in the "not like our fathers" aspect and didn't pay attention to the practical nature of what the leaders were doing. They were naive visionaries; but I don't think the point was to just sit around in a book club; they were making plans for when they came into power. Between each of the books in Era 1 though, you see Elend lose the optimism and become an actual leader. I think he was supposed to be the over-optimistic visionary; and the story showed how coming up with good sounding plans isn't sufficient to rule.

[OB] Cosmere's biggest threat
Journey Before Pancakes replied to whattheHoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Really? IMO he was an alright character, but was only really in 1 book, and was kinda a dick when they reflect back on him in subsequent books. Yeah, he's popular; but considering he's not even a main character for most of the series he's in, I think it's a bit much to call him most popular.- 27 replies

I assume he's also spiked enough that Harmony could take control of him if he wanted to. Marsh would be all too aware of this, and probably would be willing to serve Harmony peacefully instead of forcing Harmony to take control.

You were saying the _surges_ were of Honour, which is different than just the Oaths. The inspiration for the surges could even pre-date the shattering and be based on something natural about Roshar. It seems very unlikely the surgebinding is of Honour only.
-
We’ve literally had a whole novella focused on the adventures of a girl and her cultivationspren. Besides Calderis’ great point about progression, the evidence points towards surgebinding being of both for many reasons.

oathbringer [OB] Why hasn't Cultivation helped at all?
Journey Before Pancakes replied to braxton91's question in Cosmere Q&A
She may not have a typical boon-curse combination. I think she may have asked for something too obscure for the Nightwatcher, and instead met Cultivation, like Dalinar had. There's a chance she got something else. The WoB's on the topic seem to have him purposefully dodge saying that "the Nightwatcher" gave her the conversion instead saying "the Old Magic" did and stuff. -

Odium might also just be projecting. He's extremely afraid of what other shards will do to him; not necessarily because they would immediately pounce on him, but because he knows that's what he would do in that situation. -
You would think someone who has the potential to hold extreme amounts of knowledge (like enough to impress a shard with his foresight... that's pretty crazy). Big Papa T doesn't even know the truth behind what he said. He lies to himself almost every day out of pure ignorance. IDK how cryptics work; but I could see that being very interesting for them.

[OB] Surgebinder/Lightweaver broken spirits and Tien
Journey Before Pancakes replied to KalaDANG's question in Cosmere Q&A
I wonder if the weird misalignment of his cognitive and physical selves is also part of it. Would a spren see something weird too, or do they get so trapped in the physical that they wouldn't see that like Lift can? -
She might have gotten access to her plate at that time; but didn't summon it. I don't think there's necessarily a rule that they instantly have to manifest and use their new abilities when they speak an oath/truth. There's also a chance that Shallan had spoken her truths already, then rejected them which damaged the bond. Also, spren are of honor and Cultivation; surgebinding isn't exclusively Honor's.

"Main" question gets two quick answers that seem to sum up the situation. "Small" question about the realmatic nature of Nightblood and shardblades turns into a discussion taking up most of the thread. This place is fantastic.

[OB] Dalinar=Oathbringer=Bondsmith?
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Fire&Water's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm expecting his flashbacks to show us what the Shin are like, and his viewpoint chapters will have a lot of insight for how the Skybreakers work. A lot of the flashbacks don't show much of their radiant nature as far as I can tell. It's focused on the backstory with some other stuff sprinkled in. We might get to glimpse some cool surges though if we see him practicing with honorblades.- 8 replies

But then what about Szeths book? That seems like a perfect Skybreaker focus because we will get his backstory and likely see him progress on his paths.- 8 replies

My understanding is that when you store speed, you're storing your self-relative movement speed; like how fast you can move your arms and legs from your own perspective. So when storing it, you become sluggish, and when tapping it you become agile. So I agree with RShara, it wouldn't have any effect. Having it work the other way would lead to a lot of weird mechanics to deal with in feruchemy. It's already bad enough you can compound as a twinborn; being able to do it with a non-compounding A-metal would be insane.

@DracostarA As far as I know, we also aren't familiar with the temporal consequences of using Shadesmar for travel. It might be an issue of travel in Shadesmar taking too long in the reference frame of the destination compared to FTL travel.

Technically, (at least according to Peter, which is a pretty safe bet), Cosmere is a small star cluster inside of another galaxy. As for the rest of the question, I think using the knowledge that the Cosmere occurs inside of a galaxy doesn't really have many greater implications. As far as I can tell, the term "Cosmere" refers to the area where the shards inhabit and where their interactions take place. If Adonalsium had any effect outside of the Cosmere, it's likely insignificant to the story and we wouldn't learn anything about it. Personally, I'm okay with that. There needs to be some limit on the scope of the story, it's definitely quite ambitious already.

It's kind of hacky (maybe not as much as a transportation surge portal); but if you're in the cognitive realm you can do this to an extent. If you find the soul of something that you want to take with you, it's possible to get the soul to manifest in the cognitive realm and come with you. It can be reduced greatly in size and carried around. We see multiple characters do this in Mistborn: Secret History and a bit of it in Oathbringer; though the mechanics are a bit different in each.

[OB] Okay, so who exactly had the cold?
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
Asking the real questions over here. I'm going with "all of them" because they were travelling together. Galladon might have innate resistance; but I get the feeling that away from the Dor he is quite able to catch a cold. Seems like there's also a decent chance they were all immune to its effects (or had antibodies fighting it well enough) that they didn't notice it; but on Roshar there was nothing to stop it. -
@Scion of the Mists I think "Objects" is a very important part of that. Off the top of my head, there aren't other forms of Cosmere magic we've seen that can put much investiture into other objects. Surgebinding seems like it can put a decent amount; but it's only temporary, and if you put a lot in most will leak out quickly. Feruchemy and hemalurgy can add investiture to metals; but again I doubt it's an extreme amount at all. AFAIK breath is the only real way to add lots of investiture to objects that we've seen. Although it seems crazy that it's one of the most invested objects in the Cosmere; it kinda makes sense when you consider how few objects are actually holding their own investiture. I'm sure many of the crazier magic objects we find in the Cosmere offer some sort of connection to a source of investiture, making it easier/possible to do powerful things; but the object itself is rarely invested; especially to the point where it gains sentience in the physical realm (or at least is strong enough in the Cognitive to speak directly into someone's mind even if they aren't in the cognitive realm fully).
