[OB] Hoid and Dalinar Theories
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Kalidar's topic in Stormlight Archive
That doesn't seem too likely. Several of the shards seem to want to abide by the "non-interference" policy, and would therefore avoid the whole situation. It's also unlikely that the reforming of Adonalsium would take place on Roshar. As for the rest, most of this has been talked about all over 17th Shard. Dalinar becoming Unity is something we don't know for sure beyond that it's obviously significant. Hoid could have meant any number of different things when he talked about being an idea ripped from a page. He's a pretty big enigma for the most part, beyond some non-cannon unreleased work. Hoid seems to be one of the least willing conspirators if he was one; based on what has been revealed so far, and how Brandon words his responses (though he leaves plenty of wiggle room). For example, this WoB: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/9-calamity-philadelphia-signing/#e7671 -
If he got his hands on another orb of Connectionade he might be able to pull something off, at least temporarily.

I think it was to highlight the emotional state of Kaladin and Shallan (especially Shallan's personalities), along with a few other reasons. Kaladin was very unsure how he felt about lighteyes in general. The chasm sequence was a great opportunity for Kaladin to see that lighteyes could experience bad things too. I think it was a big part of seeing that lighteyes weren't all bad, which made it easier for him to swear the third oath. It also let Brandon use Kaladin's emotions to draw parallels between Shallan and Tien (hinting that Tien was becoming a lightweaver). On the Shallan side it just seemed like more exploration into her multiple personalities and the ramifications of that. Ideally it's setting Kaladin up to be close friends with Shallan and Adolin, but I'm not sure if Shallan is ready for that yet. Hopefully though, I do think they all get along really well in pairs.

... I think Vin and Elend did a fantastic job of that. They would probably get along too; but I think Elend and Vin made a good couple because they complimented each other well. Also Elend was a full undiluted mistborn; so he really brings the "power" to power couple.

Is Nightblood Connected to Ruin?
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Doomdrinker's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Though this is cearly pure speculation; I think her word choice gives us a good hint at her mindset. She didn't say something like "prevent evil" or "stop evil". She specifically went with destroy; which really seems like something that Ruin or perhaps Odium would associate with. (And obviously this isn't focusing on what she considered evil; which would add a whole extra layer)- 39 replies

[OB] Radient spren as machines??
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Destinybladez's topic in Stormlight Archive
Throw in some pressure reduction and you have bullets that could go faster than sound to an outside observer; but have none of the complications of actually breaking the sound barrier. They would probably be pretty devastating. Biggest issue I can see is that it might require the ammunition to be a fabrial too. -
I don't know enough of the specifics about the magic systems to say for sure why some transfer easier. There seem to be a few ways magic gets trapped to a system. Another thing worth noting is that investiture isn't just magic. Investiture is like energy. It makes all the magic, but also other things in the Cosmere.

[OB] Shallan and Psychology
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Nethseäar's topic in Stormlight Archive
This seems like a bit of an unfounded worry. If anyone is judging a real life condition based on a characters behaviour in a book that never gets named as that condition, then they might want to avoid fiction in general. I don't see why anyone would seriously read it and go "Well, I'm not a trained psychologist, but I'm going to diagnose this fictional character and then make judgements about real people with the condition I attributed to her". -
As an engineering material it's extremely useful. It's strength to weight to cost ratio is very good. That's why it's good for things like ladders and planes.

[OB] what was the thing Dalinar summoned?
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Zape's topic in Stormlight Archive
The perpendicularity was kind of explained. It seemed like the Stormfather didn't expect it to happen; nor did he expect Dalinar to be able to give stormlight like that. It really seems like Brandon is just leaving clues (and Dalinars explicit mention) that things are different with the Stormfather now. I don't think we've ever seen someone else bond a splinter who is also the cognitive shadow of a shards vessel. He's in a very unique spot. -
[OB] what was the thing Dalinar summoned?
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Zape's topic in Stormlight Archive
I mean, this is the same novel where Dalinar manages to summon honors perpendicularity, recharges stormlight, and calls himself Unity. It seems (to me at least) that Brandon is trying to hint that something strange is going on with Dalinar and the Stormfather. The ambiguity is probably on purpose. -
[OB] Lightweaver Theory/Question
Journey Before Pancakes replied to Juanaton's topic in Stormlight Archive
@goody153 Could be related to the fact that she's sworn at least another oath than Kaladin (she was one ahead by the end of WoR). Presumably this gives her more strength with surgebinding: along with possibly shardplate. Combine that with the fact that she only has one real oath; and she can cause quite a bit of havoc. -
You would just approach the speed of light with a constant decay to an external observer. From the perspective of the one moving; you would accelerate the same amount indefinitely; and time dilation would account for the difference between the two observers.

[OB] Nightblood’s Extra Oomph
Journey Before Pancakes replied to TheHeadHancho's topic in Cosmere Discussion
With Bio-Chroma, it seems as though they consider black to be more colourful than white. You get the most colour from black when you use it to awaken; and white can't be used. It makes sense in-universe; since things like paintings and dyes work on Subtractive colour, where black is the combination of primary colours. Considering that the manifestation of Endowment seems to be through the Tears of Edgil and the associated dyes; it makes a lot of sense. Especially since cosmere magic is perception/intention based, so with all their focus on dyes and painting, they would see black as more colourful and therefore it would provide more colour. -
Vasher was also one of The Five Scholars, do he has good reason to be well educated (even if he rarely seems to act like it because he's so jaded now). I agree with this though. A lot of the more "minor" shard hoppers are probably having their hands held and get spoonfed all the relevant information.

[OB] Nightblood’s Extra Oomph
Journey Before Pancakes replied to TheHeadHancho's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I didn't have a problem with that. The amount of breath required to bring something to life was greatly reduced by how close to a person it is, and what the command is trying to accomplish. We don't really know what the command for one Breath lifeless is; but it requires them to have a fake blood too; so they're basically human at that point. It takes more magic to make a rope behave like a person compared to a body complete with a blood substitute. -

Probably better off to just post it than to ask. Worst case scenario everyone tears it apart word for word, and you learn a lot in the process. I play devils advocate here all the time and get corrected by people who know more. It's a great way to clear up things you aren't sure about with good references to back up why you were wrong. I'd say go for it, unless you aren't willing to have people tear it apart (you seem like you'd be fine with that though). Having more ideas only helps to reinforce what we actually are confident about. -
[OB] Nightblood’s Extra Oomph
Journey Before Pancakes replied to TheHeadHancho's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't think he would be Atium. Although Nightblood is extremely destructive; I don't see any solid evidence he's actually of Ruin. His command was "destroy evil"; I don't think he needs Ruins influence to explain his destruction at all. He also does seem to have some sort of "test" for evil; and after passing it he seems like he has no desire to destroy the person. He also might be a bit too relaxed about what "evil" is; so he wants to destroy basically everything. I think it's more the case of bad mental intent when awakening than any inherent quality left from the metal used. From what we know; awakening metal isn't easy. Awakening a godmetal would have been a really stupid and exceptionally difficult for a first success at metal awakening. -
I definitely subscribe to the theory @Calderis is talking about the most. It makes a lot of sense too. Of all the shards we know; it seems likely that Cultivation would be associated with a very strong foresight. MB Era 1 Spoilers: I would posit that Cultivation would have an even (far?) greater foresight than Preservation. Preservation is concerned about the future, because it wants things to remain indefinitely. Cultivation likely would have an even stronger feel for the future, because it is concerned specifically with preparing and creating and how things actually develop. Odium probably has far better foresight than Ruin; but I imagine Cultivation is still able to outmaneuver him readily; just based on her intent at least. I'm very interested to see how it plays out.
-
That's what I'm thinking too. Something like a Ryshadium probably wouldn't have much trouble at all. The biggest problem might be intent. I don't know if you could take up a shard unless you knew you were taking control of a vast wealth of power. It may be a natural enough process that sentient animals could figure it out anyways though.
-
He likely recieved exactly what he asked for, just not how he expected. What Cultivation/Nightwatcher did probably is an attempt to save the world. It may have been necessary to affect Big T like this so that events go the right way to save Roshar. It's also possible that it was just a classic Nightwatcher Prank; where he has the "capacity" to save the world through high intelligence and compassion; but he never has both traits at the same time.

Fused aren't supposed to be balanced with Knights Radiant. Fused are more like Heralds. In the past Heralds had direct access to stormlight. Presumably, since Honor is now splintered, they don't have the direct access they had before. Odium is still around though, and likely has a way to provide it the same way Honor could.

I don't think you're really considering the barriers you have to overcome to be a worldhopper in the first place. I don't think many people stumble into the Cognitive Realm, and if they do, I doubt they have much success unless they already know what they are doing. If you know what you're doing, it's likely you're not going to jump into a world that you don't have knowledge about already. If you are just going exploring through random perpendicularities/transporting randomly, you're either extremely lucky and naive, or powerful and knowledgeable enough that you are willing to take that risk.
