Relationship Sections on Character articles
Meg replied to WeiryWriter's topic in The Coppermind Wiki
I don't want to seem opposed and I don't know if I understand your -- Weiry's -- suggestion right, but I feel having reservations. Though there is an example I don't really see what you want. I think it's not only about "Vin is married to Elend." or "Ialai is the wife of Torol Sadeas." But then: Does describing relationships not always include an interpretation of the person(s) and the relationships? And here I see problems (as an example I dare point at this thread, were it's explicit to see that every reader has their own interpretation of real or possible relationships). Which "objective" view would we use for those descriptions? I apologize for breaking in and hope for clarification. -
Some 'future' timeline thoughts.

You're right. See my edit.

I'm under the impression that the end of TWoK is already in 1174 . edit: Reconsidering this I don't think so any more.

I do not really know how to begin. So I throw in just a few thoughts, please bear with me. 1. It's one santhid and more santhidyn. 2. There were lanceryn on Aimia, a now presumably extinct race of greatshells. (TWoK Chapter 36) 3. Does "-yn" always mean plural? (One lancer, more lanceryn as in 1.?) 4. Santhids have shells too ... do they have gemhearts? (I personally think so; as for the santhid seems to be very old, its gemheart might be enormous.) 5. Might they be 'cousins' to those lanceryn? 6. Santhid are apparently very rare. Are they not hunted because they are that rare? Or do more than only sailors kind of worship them (Yalb said the santhid as a good omen). Questions over questions.

Increasing it has been a very good idea. Thanks for it. IMHO you could put it to 100 or so posts or to 10.000 . You see, I really appreciate the change.

I could see Shallan learning how to fight with her Shardblade. After all, we know that she will have more than one apprenticeship: source I also think to remember that somebody suggested Shallan becoming Wit's apprentice, so this might have been a little joke.

Excerpt from Words of Radiance: Chapters Six, Eight, and Nine
Meg replied to kobain's topic in Stormlight Archive
On Roshar, too, there are not only spheres for light. TWoK Chapter 23 So I'd say that using candles or oil lamps on ships should be avoided, I'm not sure if there would not be at least some candles on the ship (just in case that the gems run out of Stormlight). This! *bg* We know from TWoK that Rock has yet problems with the Alethi language. And similar to our different languages (for example in English it's "a chair" {= "it"} while in German it's "der Stuhl" {= "he"}) the Horneater people might refer to a broam as "he" while the Alethi do as "it". Where would they be sent? This would be about an innumerable count of Parshmen to be sent away. Giving them to a foe assuming they would stand up against this foe seems kind of counterproductive; I'd fear that Parshmen could/would join forces with the foe, and the result might be, that the foe and the Parshmen together overrun the Alethi people. -
I'm sorry, I can't agree here. May be I'm naive, but I think looking "guilty" wasn't a genuine emotion from Amaram. He's a Brightlord, so he should be able to control his countenance, and so seeing him "looking guilty" doesn't in any way convince me that he was really affected by Kaladin's blame. Why murder the other four of Kaladin's squad? He could have sold them to slavers, too, so to different slavers. I'm sure there were possibilities to separate those five and send them away. Their deaths were not the only way, I think, the fastest perhaps, but not the only. And wouldn't there have been others who saw this event? Did Amaram kill everybody who was suspicious of having seen what happened? I think Amaram is capable of doing this. I believe that Amaram thought what he did was for the "greater good". But his "greater good" focuses on him and his equals, so this is not a "greater good" that could justify his actions.

I'd say: yes. My try to explain as I understand it: Each living being has it's own, individual Spiritweb. Beings with Innate Investiture have their ability to access the Power of Creation (more or less) "automatically" or by birth on a specific world in the Cosmere. The Spiritwebs of those beings are "innately" altered with "Investiture" (like Breath on Nalthis, but: not the Divine Breath!). Beings without Innate Investiture can gain Investiture for example by ingesting Lerasium which alters their Spiritweb to enable their access to the Power of Creation. Hemalurgy alters (more: messes) the Spiritweb of the victim but gives this access to the receiver. Is this understandable?

double-post (because I don't know whether edited posts show up as new). I put my text in spoiler tags because they contain spoilers (for WoR) and to shorten this post. I posted in the thread about Ch. 6, 8 and 9 and the result was: When I hit edit it looked like this: I wrote my post directly in the "reply to this topic" box and didn't preview it before adding reply (generally I hit the "more reply options" button and and preview my post; maybe it's problem about that "reply to this topic" box?

Excerpt from Words of Radiance: Chapters Six, Eight, and Nine
Meg replied to kobain's topic in Stormlight Archive
Wow -- Thaylenens seeing Pattern; Rock sees Syl. Might it be that the non-Vorin believers are nearer to the Cognitive Realm and thus able to see those spren? -- Jasnah on Desolations: "industry smashed. Each time ... were reduced to an almost prehistoric state." -- Spies among the Parshmen ... -- Renarin already got his Shardplate. -- Information about loaning Shardplate and -blade. -- Kaladin and Syl: I love them both. -- Honorspren and Cryptics "love" each other. Syl: "Lie? ... What do you think I am? A Cryptic?" -- Syl: Refounding the Knights Radiant is "a brilliant idea." -- Spren can not attract spren. -- Syl: What they do is important, she defied the Stormfather, who was the face in the Highstorm Kaladin saw. Need more ... edit for visual clarity. -
Wild Speculation: Dalinar's Boon and Curse (minor spoilers)
Meg replied to Moist_von_Lipwig's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't think that Dalinar's boon and curse was the same (i. e. one) because I hope that BS doesn't repeat such results and we already know that Taravangian's unstable IQ is his boon and his curse. -
I'm trying to put the given tidbits in chronology and let you participate with some of my (hopefully not again broken) thoughts: ~ 1167: Gavilar, Dalinar and Sadeas had been friends until Gavilar was assassinated. Just before Szeth murdered Gavilar, Amaram and Gavilar were talking in private.(1) ~ 1172/1173: Amaram, Brightlord in Sadeas's princedom, was attacked by an unknown Veden Shardbearer, who was killed by Kaladin. Amaram took the Shards for himself and branded Kaladin as a slave. ~ 1173 (or later? 1174?): Amaram comes to the Shattered Plains. Probably at a time when Adolin is yet fighting duels.(2) (1) When first reading the new Prologue I wondered about Gavilar and Amaram talkin in private. But I think it's not that a suprise, hence we know that Dalinar and Sadeas were friends prior to Gavilar's death. I'd love to know what this conversation was about. Some profane warfare things? The Ghostbloods? Voidbringers and Desolations? Surely not about a marriage between Jasnah and Amaram, I'm sure of this. (2) Though I said here that I don't see a political problem if Adolin would fight with Amaram, after some reconsidering I think it may not be that simple as I thought. Not after remembering this tidbit: can be found here This seems as if Amaram was still siding with Dalinar, even if Sadeas is his highprince, not Dalinar. Also this quote indicates that Amaram knows things ... I wonder if Dalinar could take Amaram under his protection (kind of giving him asylum). Either way -- Amaram being friend (and so loyal?) with Dalinar or seeking protection from Dalinar -- I see that a duel might not be very good.

If you have read the Lift-Interlude I can relieve your mind. If you didn't, I don't know ... Spoiler from the Lift-Interlude: I'm sorry, I'm yet stuck with TWoK but when you said, you remembered something like this, I was reminded of Wyndle. So I didn't remember it when I did my previous posting.

This is quite interesting for me, too. I looked for "sentience" and found it means "being able to feel" (uhm, very simply said) and that other words would be "sense, sensibility, aesthesia, sensitive faculty". As synonyms for "sapience" I found "wisdom". I dare say that not each human being is "sapient".

I only remember the scene when Rock says that he sees Syl: TWoK Chapter 21 I don't know in mind whether there is WoB that says it has to do with the Realms.

Wild Speculation: Dalinar's Boon and Curse (minor spoilers)
Meg replied to Moist_von_Lipwig's topic in Stormlight Archive
Gavilar was murdered some six years ago, Dalinar's wife died some ten years ago, so, no, it happened prior to Gavilar's assasination. -
Wild Speculation: Dalinar's Boon and Curse (minor spoilers)
Meg replied to Moist_von_Lipwig's topic in Stormlight Archive
Dalinar said, he knows exactly what his curse was, but he didn't specify them, when asked by Renarin: TWoK Chapter 61 I don't remember one part in TWoK that can be brought in as an evidence whether forgetting all about his wife is the boon or the curse. Also I can't remember any quote on this question (if there was one it would not clarify our confusion). We will have to wait, I think. -
This! I've totally forgotten about Shallan looking for her because of the Soulcaster. My bad.
-
I apologize in advance for being terse at the moment (I'm mostly occupied by other things unfortunately). Reading another topic (more: skimming it, I lack of concentration) it stuck me that I had never realized that Taravangian seemed to have known about Jasnah's abilities. And it's not important whether she Soulcasts herself or with the help of a fabrial, she just Soulcasts. When I read those chapters, it just came to me as a fact that he would ask Jasnah for her being the only one who could Soulcast in Kharbranth. But on the other side I got the impression that Jasnah's Soulcasting ability is hidden very well. She's not an ardent, worse, she's a heretic. So: Why did Taravangian know about this? Where did he get his information? Does he really have such a spy network? I'd love to read the conversation when Taravangian asked Jasnah for help. Jasnah must have been in Kharbranth when the accident with Taravangian's granddaughter occured. Or did she offer her help. We know that she was "paid" with getting access to the Kharabanthian library.

@ Kyzkle: Teft says that Kaladin is not yet a Knight Radiant, but I think Teft sees Kaladin on is way to become a Knight Radiant. This, I think, because he has more knowledge than he admits (for example he knows about the Ideals). As for Dalinar's companions in this vision: What if they use some fabrials? Perhaps to enhance their strength.

I'm with you here, Bloodfalcon. Also I'm sure Elhokar saw 'his spren' prior to the event with his saddle. TWoK Chapter 12
-
Why? Amaram is a brightlord from Sadeas's princedom not Dalinar's. If Adolin is to duel Shardbearers from the other nine warcamps I don't see problems. Except: We got a tidbit in the prologue where Gavilar and Amaram seemed to have secret conversations. So maybe Amaram is more attached to the Kholins though his loyality should be with Sadeas. If this is the case there could be a moral problem (but no political). Right, but he might remember when at the beginning (while he was unconsciously using stormlight) his gems grew dab. So he might figure the connection. As for Shallan writing down her experiences I'm with Weiry: She would not be measuring it (as a side note: I'm still not convinced that one can measure each and every spren and therewith "capture it in place"), she is to write the events down. I personally am not surprised to hear about Sadeas's goals. I think he might work with Taravangian (as far as we know about Taravangian from TWoK), as for their goals seem to be quite similar.
-
I understand this part as for what Jasnah says just afterwards: she refers to Shallan's youth and her father (who, undoubtedly, was a man). Windrunner made a theory about Jasnah's past in March 2013; maybe some of the thoughts there are interesting for readers in this actual thread.
