The quote just before thos was in response to Calderis's statement specifically. This one. I do have the assumption that you were saying that self perception was the defining factor or Investiture healing which the your statements implied to me at least. I agree that, as we've seen Lopen regrow his arm, there is no hard time limit which. Considering you think I disagree with that, i think there was a bit of misunderstanding on both sides leading to the kind of situation where we were having two different conversations. It seems now to me after your clarification you were talking that the only time limit is however long it takes a person's self perception to think of the wound as part of them. If they ever accept it as part of them that is. Am I correct in that statement? I was talking about (or trying to at least) how there was more to healing than just self perception (at least in regards to external healing) such as what happened with Lightsong healing Susebron
-
These were the points I exactly was trying to make. That there was more to healing than just self perception. I mistook your AonDor comment as you arguing against that fact.
-
Calling it an outlier admits that there are other rules governing healing. You can't just say "this is an exception" and while yes Elantris was written before he fully envisioned the Cosmere and Aons are complicated yes but at the end of the day, it acts differently which means other healings can have there own rules.
-
I never said there was an "ah ha" moment. There is a reason I used the word implication And those annotations say absolutely nothing about whether external healing works differently or otherwise. The fact that she was able to become Hoed rather than just not heal properly for me at least is evidence that there is something more to it. I know that won't be enough to convince you, but to me that is a contradiction between books and WoB which he himself has said that books trump WoB
-
Aon's are pertinent because they do supply Cosmere healing via an external source. The zombie effect makes sense for the Elantrian transformation but not healing. As I've said, every other case of an incomplete Aon we have seen is a weakening of effect. I'm aware that self perception are vital to healing and have myself explained it to people who have brought up the question. But we have canonical examples of things where there are implications of there being more to it
-
I could believe it. Though I personally think it's because the Shards aren't as separate as everyone assumes
-
The fact that AonDor healing can do that kind of change shows there is likely a difference between internal and external healing beyond the recipient's own cognitive filter. Nobody's Ideal of themselves is going to be a zombie. Sure the Aon was messed up but every other instance of an Aon being wrong that we have seen has been a weakening of effect, not a complete change in affect.

I didn't have a problem with him being brought back but I completely agree with the way he died part. I read the retcon first and it seemed jarring before I read the original and I much preferred the original.
-
Arguably Returned healing doesn't. Susebron's tongue had been gone pretty much his entire life, so it is likely that he would have considered it a part of him like how terrismen accepted their castration as part of them. The fact that it was able to be healed implies a different rule.
-
His limits were most definitely more than he just wasn't compatible with it. For one he lacked a connection to the Physical Realm which Ruin straight up says in Secret History means that Kelsier wasn't fully holding Preservation's power, as is evident by the fact that the Mists were still separate from him. Also compare what Vin can do to what Kelsier could do. The best that Kelsier was able to do was occasionally communicate with people he was Connected to and distract Ruin momentarily by attacking him by surprise. Frankly, TLR had more access to the Shard when he was using the Well than Kelsier had when he was holding the Shard
-
Except the mists were still there. He held the power in a more full way than TLR but never fully held the Shard.
-
My two cents. I think if someone had a brain injury that changed their personality it would depend on how much they consider the damage and the new personality as who they are versus something that happened to them.
-
I wonder if Sazed also put in the part that Kelsier never fully ascended to divinity. Because it wasn't so much that he was good enough to step down so much as he wasn't really holding onto it in the first place. Though I agree that Survivorists would try to spin it like you said. But I'm more interested in how they reconcile him giving up his divinity and still considering him a god.
-
I agree with the hands off approach myself. After all, are you truly endowing something to someone if you are still controlling it? I view the Intent as not the true nature of the Shards. What I think Intents are is a nature of Investiture interactions colored by a Cognitive aspect. Take Honor for instance, most people wouldn't view honor as being about Connections but it seems very important with the Shard. Likewise Endowment might very well be the transfer of Investiture through a system colored with the idea of gifting power. That again is only a theory

The Unmade and Roshar's technology
StanLemon replied to Friendshipspren's topic in Stormlight Archive
Cool, won't work for a water wheel. Also farmland uses plants that have evolved to handle high storms and uses solid structure buildings. More complex technology is more susceptible to damage and being made inoperable by natural hazards. Human ingenuity is wonderful and can overcome a lot. But there is a lot to overcome on Roshar, as you said "it is literally spelled out in the book" and 1-3 high storms a week will be a constant detriment that likely can not be overcome. Think of how much time, effort, and money goes into damage control after hurricanes. Sure we haven't built places to be as hardy as structures are on Roshar but the books clearly show that even with all of their preparation, the high storms are very inconvenient and require a ton more labor because of it- 64 replies

Far and away I choose Dalinar. He has, after Oathbringer become my favorite Sanderson character

The Unmade and Roshar's technology

Likely easier said than done. Again, it comes down to a cost benefit analysis. That's something that has held us back here on Earth. Sure there are lots of things we could do or have done significantly earlier than we did, but because those with money and power considered them too costly or time intensive, they weren't done. It generally requires a lot of foresight to make the kind of investment you suggest. Sure those developments long term on Roshar potentially could work but in the short term they would be very difficult and costly.- 64 replies

Except development like the aforementioned water wheel that has been suggested before. Roshar is antagonistic to development, that's the whole point of this thread. An explanation for why Roshar isn't as developed- 64 replies

The Unmade and Roshar's technology
StanLemon replied to Friendshipspren's topic in Stormlight Archive
They don't travel during the high storm. They must lock things up and people need to secure everything and find/make cover. High storms are regularly described as being able to throw boulders. Also any kind of permanent structure needs to be well fortified to handle and break the wind or they will be broken apart. Add years of wear and tear from having at least one of those storms every week will make anything complicated and delicate require a large amount of upkeep. Much more than happens anywhere with monsoon season here. The books do show examples of how they have adapted yes. But it's fairly clear you are underplaying how problematic the high storms are to Rosharan development. Using the water wheel example above. It's already been pointed out how your suggestion would be inefficient. But also Rosharans woul only be able to do it with rivers that were North/South in any lasting way. East/West rivers would be almost impossible. A big aspect to development is cost/benefit and this seems far too costly for the benefits- 64 replies

The Unmade and Roshar's technology
StanLemon replied to Friendshipspren's topic in Stormlight Archive
The issues with comparing Roshar with a place with monsoon seasons are just that, seasons. Roshar has a storm that happens at least once a week that are comparable to the worst storms we ever have on Earth if not worse. That causes lots of wear and tear on a constant bases. Compare that to anywhere here on Earth with monsoon seasons. We have the majority of the year to perform upkeep before the next storm seasons. I'm not saying that it would be impossible for Roshar to develop under that situation but it would be much harder and require a lot more effort and labor than it does here. So comparing them seems a false comparison to me- 64 replies

Which non-human species would you want to be?

The mighty Armpen -
That's still just a theory. Maybe even a possible uses of it but it's more likely that that would be another side effect rather than actual effect.

Which non-human species would you want to be?
StanLemon replied to StanLemon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That doesn't make a decision Also, I'm not sure we can count Dragons as a few people have chosen as we haven't actually seen a Cosmere dragon -
As the title says, which non-human Cosmere species that we have seen would you like to be? Let's only consider ones we've actually seen "on screen" so to speak. Personally I think a Kandra is the one I would like to be
