Yeah, the funny thing about that is that it took me a while to find it too, and I still typed in Brainscan (which is what I initially remembered the name to be). Brainscan BTW is a super schlocky movie, unless that's your cup of tea I'd stay away from it. The only reason that I watched it was because it was on a multi-dvd cheapo dvd that also had Wax Works (which is a good movie, but Wax Works 2 is a better movie)

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted. Unbeknownst to you, your Koloss blade, named The Pun-isher (due to its proclivity for bad puns) has been using the Internet behind your back to channel your savings into speculative positions in the Rosharan, Scadrian, and Nalthan futures markets. With a portfolio of dubious investments that spans 3 shardworlds, your sword is now the 2nd most "invested" object in the cosmere, right behind an awakened paperweight in Silver light that owns and manages a booming chain of Ramen noodle joints on 4 sub-astrals called the Soul of the Noodle. Your bane is that Pun-isher's mind is much duller than his blade, and you now owe quite a bit of money to the ghostbloods. Ninja'd by @Xtafa... The Nightwatcher hands you a gemstone glowing with a strangely dark purple light and then makes you swallow it. For the next 2 hours you are master of every surge, the multitudinous powers of creation are yours to control. After sculpting a statue of yourself out of basalt like it was clay, lashing yourself into the upper reaches of the atmosphere, and sliding down a hill with super slick legs, what's left of your body collapses into an immobile heap. And Yelig-nar's gem stone still glows faintly with its eery purplish light. I wish that T-Rex's could fly, and that instead of like birds, they retained their cute little arms with 3 fingers and had separate wings. -
There's a movie from the 80's starring Christopher Walken called Brainstorm where they do this exact thing. They are able to record complete experiences (including all sensation, vision and audio) and then another person can play them back and experience the recorded experience as if the recorded experience was happenning to them. The trouble comes when a scientist records his experiences while having a fatal heart attack in a misguided attempt to pull back the veil of death and so that a living person could experience what happens at the point of death. Needless to say, this was a bad idea.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted, you're doing great. Have an upvote. I wish that @Apollyon knows that the boon granted above was in no way directed at him personally, and that it really was just about the idea of opening yourself up for an unknown bane for a boon that was easily accomplished without magical intervention, and the Nightwatcher's reaction to the aforementioned (on re-reading it, it sounded a bit harsh). Oh and I also wish for a flying monkey familiar that likes to play cribbage and who wouldn't mind carrying my groceries in from the car. -
Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
The Nightwatcher hands you a piece of paper and a pencil. After you finish the 15 minute project of compiling your list while looking through this thread, she then turns you into a pinkish colored hat. It's a very special type of hat, with two round protrusions on the bowl of the hat, that pinch inwards towards the center. The hat evokes the rosy buttocks of cherubs seen in Rococo paintings. Then she turns to Cultivation and says "What an a□□ hat" I wish that I got this in before @Jehoiada and @1st of Lunch too... Granted, unfortunately your wish brings obnoxious tourists in a massive scale, and pretty soon everyone's smuggling spren off planet or getting aluminum canteens filled with shardpool water. Pretty soon there's no more investiture on any of the Invested worlds, but Disney does open a Cosmere them park and it's pretty epic. I wish I could type faster on my phone. -
Uhhmm, yeah. That's embarrassing, you're totally right, moving on.... These are good points, the first could be a semantic obfuscation, the animate corpse of someone is still technically that person, but that still is a very good point. And the 4th point could be addressed by the fact that he maintains greater independence of action in his role as a scout. You really do have me about 3/4 convinced that he's not a kandra, but Felt's role as spy master for house venture, the Lord Ruler's clandestime Atium operation operating through said house venture, his similar intelligence function for emperor Elend and then his role in a spy like capacity for Dalinar still constitutes a thematically linked and compelling thread. This thread can be explained by 2 possibilities: Either he's been a kandra in service of the prevailing power on Scadrial since MB era1, or is working for one of the Worldhopping secret societies, possibly due to his knowledge of the mercantile system that operated from Ruin's perpendicularity. With his role as guide to the Valley, and with his presence at the Alethi court when Hoid was serving as the king's Wit, we can probably rule out the Seventeenth Shard. If he is a member of a secret society the most likely would be the Ghostbloods.
-
The kandra are described in SoS as Harmony's eyes. It makes sense to me that he would send his agents to all of the Invested world's in the cosmere after ascending. Felt is a scout in Dalinar's army precisely at the time that they are pushing towards the heart of the shattered plains to find Urithiru and on the Eve of the Everstorm. He's also Dalinar's guide during the trip to the Nightwatcher and he had previously visited the valley before this trip. His advice to Dalinar also subtlety nudges Dalinar to seek the Nightwatcher the very night that they reach the valley. Harmony is not the ruthless "the ends justify the means" kind of master that the Lord Ruler was, so torturing and killing a native Rosharan to have a kandra agent that is able to blend in perfectly wouldn't be a method that he Harmony would sanction. The worldhopper on Nalthis is described as a terris-woman, most likely because this was the body that his Nalthan kandra agent was using while she was still on Scadrial. Another point in favor of this is the Atium. The Lord Ruler was incredibly secretive with the true purpose of the Atium opertation, and it seems very hard to believe that he would fail to have one of his most trusted servants in a position to monitor this operation from the inside. If Felt is a kandra, his ability to learn the language could be aided by a blessing of potency. One other point, I find it much harder to believe that Mrall, being alien to Roshar, could insinuate himself in such a high position within the Diagramatist's order. We know that on his brilliant days Taravangian can see with a prescience bordering on that granted by viewing the spiritual realm and that in the original diagram he was able to spot Hoid's (or possibly Mraize's) influence on the skein of unfolding events. It seems to me that Mrall the Kandra would be in serious danger of discovery during a brilliant day. But, a kandra scout, in direct communication with the most powerful existent shard in the cosmere could rise quickly yet unobtrusively to a position of influence and have the freedom of mobility to be far ranging eyes for Harmony. To address one final point that I've seen brought up to preclude Felt from being the Rosharan kandra, namely that Harmony's reply to Hoid's letter seems to imply that Harmony has little clue as to what is happening on Roshar is this, we don't know the timeline of when Hoid's letters were sent or when the replies were sent either. These letters could be like Qwaan's confession, an artifact of the past narratively overlayed over current events. For all we know Hoid could have sent his letter to Harmony right after the Catacendra.
-
Sounds interesting, what makes you think Mrall is the kandra? This would also make Felt 300+ years old, and from the events of Era 1 mistborn he seems to just be a regular Scadrian, with no Allomantic or feruchemical powers. How would he last through the 300+ years post catacendra? Demoux was an Atium misting, one hemalurgical spike with feruchemical Atium and a cache of Atium would get him through the 300 years. Gallodon can Drink AonDor-ade like the Ire, and Baon can use whatever magical Taldain hack that Khriss uses to defy the adverse effects of time, but Felt? How can we explain his longevity? It might be too much of a stretch to say Felt might be Paalm (that would be tight on the timeline) but he still seems like he could be the worldhopping kandra to me.
-
Mistborn Era 2 takes place around stormlight 5 or 6, so it could be Paalm. The reason to keep the Felt persona could be that Felt oversaw the Scadrian part of the interplanetary trade from the Pits of Hathsin, and possibly had contacts on Roshar that would recognize him from this role.
-
This is totally down the rabbit hole kind of stuff, but it could be that Felt is really Paalm, the Lord ruler's pet kandra. House venture was responsible for the Atium mining operation, would make sense for the Lord Ruler to have an inside man making sure no one else in house Venture is skimming off the Atium. During the siege of Luthadel, it was spy master Felt that found the secret way into Luthadel through the canals. We know that the Atium was shipped into Luthadel after joining the Obligator Acolytes during their canal trip to Luthadel. Might have been one of his secret tasks to use those same canals to get the Atium into Luthadel using those same canals. Paalm was described in SoS I think as the consumate actor, and it wasn't until Harmony sent her on her Wax mission that she started developing an independent identity. As to why felt is the 3rd son of a minor noble, this could simply be to make Felt the exact right social standing where he could be placed in house venture, but still not stand out.

[OB] Ideas on how to eliminate the Fused problem
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Gasper's topic in Stormlight Archive
We have seen one weapon capable of killing a cognitive shadow and also doing something else that is rather mysterious, namely drawing something forth from the incarnate physical form of the cognitive shadow and trapping it in a gem. The Herald killing knife wielded by Moash. Would be an ironic turn of events if Odium's god metal was the only material able to kill his deathless warriors. This may be the real reason why the Fused were so insistent on delegating the task of taking out Jezrien with this weapon, because to them too it could be the final death. The Sovereign should probably tread lightly on Roshar as well, he may not be able to survive the prick of the Odious knife either. -
[OB] Ideas on how to eliminate the Fused problem
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Gasper's topic in Stormlight Archive
Only problem with this Solution is that KRS will all have to start wearing red baseball caps that say "Make Roshar great again!" And they'll need to figure out how to trick the Singers into building it too. -
Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
After the words of your wish leave your mouth, the Nightwatcher lifts up her emerald eyes to the sky, and one shimmering luminescent tear falls from her eye as she says "Thank you". Then her vaporous form swirls and dissipates like early morning mist. From behind a tree Cultivation jumps out and says "You're did it Mistspren! You won!" You blink your eyes in shock as Cultivation steps forward and grabs you by the hand and says "It's yours, it's all yours!" You scratch your head and say "What's all mine?" "My powers - the power of life itself. I've been looking for a worthy vessel to take my place, so I created the Nightwatcher in an effort to find a single soul, thoughtful and with a noble heart that would look with clear eyes towards the good of all life, and that vessel is you Mistspren". "At first I worried that it was too obvious a test, I mean I created mosquitoes for this very purpose, but I thought for sure someone would figure this out millenia ago. But you, dear Mistspren are the first to wish this most noble and prudent of wishes. So my power is yours, I will retire to Shinovar and cultivate bonsai trees." Your only bane is that now your responsible for defeating Odium, but Odium can no longer call upon his mosquitoes spies, so you'll have an easier go of it. I wish that it rained candy, and that the candy falls softly enough that no people or animals are injured by the candy rain. -
Stoned Shaman - wasn't that a Pauly Shore movie?

Some very bad advice, in Ketek form. All is vanity, all is spent. Now dead, fall before truth. The knowable Epiphany! Know the truth, before falling dead. Now spending is all, Vanity is all.

[OB] Worldhophotel.com/Roshar
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Darkwalker's topic in Stormlight Archive
3.5/5 stars. Harmony knows I've stayed in worse places, but with those rusting high storms coming so often, meat on this planet never gets to age properly. The one consolation is that a certain High princess caught the common cold and passed on in time for me to truly "enjoy" high society. Take it from me, the gossip is nowhere near as juicy as the gossipers themselves. If you come to Roshar you "May" see me around, but that's up to Harmony I guess. -
Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted! You get Tonk Fah's soiled underwear, Rock's shaving scum, and Wayne's lucky bowler hat. Your bane is that these are the only vestments you are allowed to wear for the rest of your days. Needless to say you are shunned by your fellow man, but there's always a rainbow right? With a fake mustache forged from the shorn face of a horneater, a mighty pair of briefs soiled by one of the blackest of mortal souls, and a foldable hat that actually is quite dapper, you retire to the hills and focus on your poetry. A group of fishermen at the base of your hill give you all the fish guts and brown rice you require for sustenance, and all that is required of you is to compose sonnets in praise of the beauty of their womenfolk. Truly you attain the high water mark of poetic brilliance, using your poetic genius to truthfully reveal the beauty of the souls and minds of this collection of hairy faced, bow-legged women. Over the years your command of your art far outstrips the confines of mere mortal genius. As you feel the pale hand of death steal upon you, you compose your masterpiece, the culmination of the pent up anguish of a life of suffering for the sake of your art. As the final line of your poem is writ upon the page, the words begin to blaze forth in blinding golden light. You feel your form joining with this light and in one transcendent moment the entirety of creation is revealed, your mind, soul and body are one with the Universe. You feel your essence being pulled upwards, ever upwards until you find your mind spread out, expansive yet whole. When the villagers learn of your death, they mourn for an entire month. A mighty heap of fish-guts and brown rice is burned nightly. As the smoke drifts up from your memorial offering, the villagers glance up and see a new constellation in the night sky. To their red-rimmed eyes, clouded with tears, this constellation looks like a mustachioed man, wearing only underwear and a bowler hat. I wish that my cat didn't yell at me to get treats in the morning. -
[OB] Dalinar and the Beyond
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to npi2015's topic in Cosmere Discussion
We know that the spiritual realm isn't bound by time or space, the simplest answer is that when Dalinar combined the three realms, he was able to access his spiritual connection to Evi, and was able to receive her forgiveness while his physical presence was in a future time but before Evi's spirit passed to the Beyond. -
Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
After the words leave your lips you have it! The iron-clad ultimate wish that is un-baneable, that will grant you ceaseless happiness for the rest of your life. You turn to the Nightwatcher to ask for this perfect boon, but she tells to Scram, she already gave you your boon. Your curse is a painful boil on your backside that weeps a pungent fluid that smells not unlike rotting fish. I wish the Nightwatcher would clarify one thing, do I indeed have to eat the rotting fish tattoo? Or could I use it to fertilize my garden beds? -
Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
The Nightwatcher scratches her head with a wispy green tendril, then shrugs her vaporous snake-like shoulders and gives you a small raft made of 18 cheese coated macaroni noodles fashioned into a raft, covered in water tight epoxy that is tethered to a spool of string. Figuring your boon is also your bane, she points a green curling tendril over a small prominence. With dragging steps, you walk over the small hillock and see 17 miniature puddles all shaped like the letter C. You quickly get bored and try to leave, but the Nightwatcher stops you as you attempt to leave. She points back at the puddles, and you realize with horror that this sailing the 17 "C"s is going to be your life's only work. Consolation prize is that the Nightwatcher always fixes you Mac n cheese to eat, and she makes the best Mac n cheese in the world. Unfortunately it's a non-native dish to Roshar, but she gets it mostly right. I wish that I had a magic tattoo on my arm of a half chocolate half maple bar donut that I could take off and eat anytime I wanted. Further when I take it off it turns into a real honest to goodness earth style donut, and the magic tattoo would always reappear on my arm. -
I think that an uninhabited Star System would be non-existant in the Cognitive Realm. It would be interesting though to know what the actual threshold of Sapience is that allows for the development of an otherwise empty CR. This 2016 WOB (which is spoilered below and gets quoted a lot by the way when the CR comes up), implies that the threshold is thinking lower levels of life, but doesn't specify what type of life this. I am guessing at the least Multi-cellular life is necessary, most likely with a specialized organ for thought and a possibly with notochord or some similar central Nervous system, but this is just speculation. Might be possible to rule out an unexplored Ocean planet with Island sized Jelly fish though. The analogy above about the nested rotational frames of reference was just one possible way that a direction in the CR could correspond to a larger reference frame (i.e. you travel NE in shadesmar and when you reach the boundary of Roshar's CR you will begin transiting through the expanse of the Broken Sky). While this might be the mechanism that accomplishes this, I think it's far more likely that the relative positions of points of travel to neighboring sub-astrals is simply set at the point in Roshar's daily rotation when center point of the unfolded topology of the surface of the planet would be pointing directly at the Galactic center point. This is a simpler explanation and also the primary evidence of Kelsier's journey through the outer boundaries of the Scadrian sub-astral make no mention of the sea of glass and the foliage growing on it shifting or rotating in any way. Also obsidian, and glass like seems like a material that is not meant for motion, but is rather meant to be static and fixed in position (which is one of the nice inversions for turning fluid seas and bodies of water into stationary bodies). One other thing to think about which is pretty interesting I think, is what Shadesmar might look like from a great vertical distance. We know that Kaladin and the Fused can use their surges of Gravitation to fly in the Rosharan CR, what if they lashed themselves up and continued up for a couple of miles? Would they see that this CR topology has a definitive 3 dimensional surface shape (i.e. is the CR really a shaped like a torus? Or like Arthur Dent's coffee cup?) There are quite a few different ways that you can construct a continuous topology, but if the speculation is true that when a traveler through Shadesmar reaches the edge of the Shadesmar map that corresponds to one of the expanses, but doesn't intend to travel to another sub-astral, they would simply circumnavigate the Rosharan sub-astral, then maybe trying to figure out the specific shape and configuration for the Cognitive Realm is not even possible, because it's an abstraction where the Intent of the traveler matters as much as the perceived topography.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted, you receive a full frontal lobotomy and never experience the temporary pain from rapidly eating frozen treats in your frontal lobe ever again. The Nightwatcher, after watching you drool on yourself feels kind of bad for you, so you also get a magic tub of ice cream that is perpetually full of your favorite ice cream. I wish that I could have 3 additional pairs of arms attached to my body like the Hindu God Ganesh, and the mental acuity to use my eight arms simultaneously yet independently. If it not too much to ask, I'd also like each of my 6 new arms to have cool tattoos, like a Camaro belching fire and flying off a cliff under the full moon with an oversized wolf on top of the car howling with bared fangs. The Nightwatcher can decide what text to put on my arms with the cool new tattoos. -
@Ashspren and @ljósmóður, maybe the detail of Hoid eating pomegranate pips is to evoke elements of Greek mythology. There is a better parallel for Hoid and his quest to return someone he loves from the dead, namely the Story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Hopefully when he's rescuing his beloved he won't look back until they're both safely away.

Buy, and the newly found archive will include a selection of songs from the Radiant Barber Shop quartet group "The Don Singers" (All of whose first names are actually Don) including such classics as "Dun, Dun, Dun, the Weepin's Here Again, Better Go Inside", "Goodbye My Thaylen Island Baby", "Goodnight Gemheart" and the perennial Rosharan favorite "The Whitespine Sleeps Tonight". Felt is really a Dysian Aimian, and his long drooping mustaches are really the hyper sensitive antennae of his specialized hordelings.
