Laurelai stood up, letting out a loud sigh as she did so. She took the now-cooled coffee with her, taking a hearty sip as she looked out the door with growing trepidation. She'd planned on ignoring whatever the thump had been, much as she'd ignored the voice that was calling out earlier, but it seemed that Lita had already investigated the source. Though given that Lita wasn't screaming or dead it seemed like it wasn't anything too bad. She stepped out into the Alley proper, seeing a large Horneater and what appeared to be a number of corpses being held against a nearby wall. She circled around, keeping some distance between her and the man and examining the two corpses. There didn't seem to be any puncture wounds typical of test subjects, but that raised the question of what exactly they were from. She arched an eyebrow towards the man. "Lost?" She asked simply. "Or looking for us?" It was usually one or the other. He was lucky that he'd wound up here, many people who wandered into the Alleys never wandered back out. Hopefully he hadn't seen anything he shouldn't yet. But she started studying him as best she could, just in case.

"Beyond whatever resources you collect while exploring, we will pay well for each day of work, in the currency of your choice, Chriysts, Boxings or Spheres." His eyes rested for a moment on those with notable Scadrian or Rosharan heritage. "The exact amount will depend on your contributions but even at a minimum I'm sure you'll find it satisfactory." He reached into a pocket and pulled a large pouch out, resting it on the table for viewing. The red glow of a number of ruby broams peered out through the opening, briefly bathing Nitinyas' hand in light for a moment before he closed the strings of the pouch and withdrew it once more. "As for danger, we've conducted an initial-" Nitinyas was cut off once again as the sound of thunder rolled through the room. It was lower this time, more of a rumble than a cracking sound. But the doctor seemed irritated still. Once more he glanced up towards the ceiling before looking back towards the stairway, but the server had still not returned. "I do apologize." He said once more. "Please excuse me for a moment." He spun stiffly on one leg, moving towards the same staircase and marching up, the wood creaking once more as he ascended out of sight.

"Well, to answer both of you-" Nitinyas began. But a peal of cracking thunder sounded overhead, interrupting his reply. He looked up towards the ceiling, his thin eyebrows knit together in annoyance before he turned back to the two of them. "Apologies. Testing difficulties." He said without further explanation. "To answer you both, the natives have mapped the land I'm sure but we haven't received any back yet. It appears there is some small degree of time slippage in the return journey which makes frequent communications a little difficult." He finished the last of his wine, setting it down on a nearby table. As he placed the glass he caught eyes with one of the servers and gave a nod towards the ceiling. The server nodded back before quickly hurrying out of the room and beginning to ascend a nearby staircase. The creaking of the wood beneath their feet quickly faded as they reached a higher level and Nitinyas turned back without comment. "However I'm sure that acquiring something of that nature would not be too difficult once you've arrived." He continued.

Nitinyas' smile faltered for a moment as he looked towards Lisa, but he regained it a moment later, nodding towards her in approval. "Quite accurate, yes." He said as he regarded her for a moment. He seemed to observe her curiously before slowly turning towards Renata and addressing her. "Anything unusual." He said, waving a hand dismissively. "I imagine we'll need quite a number of samples in order to differentiate what is simply local oddities compared with something that is unnatural entirely."

"Realmatic spatio-psychology." Nitinyas replied, his lips still curved into a smile but not it was simply a polite, business-like expression. "Or more simply, the spatial implication of our shared collective conscious and unconscious minds impact upon the cognitive realm." He looked around the room once more, his eyes paused briefly on each individual present, evaluating them before moving on to the next. "But the work I have right now is of a more practical nature than I am capable of any longer. Over the course of my studies into the cognitive realm, I discovered an... anomaly of sorts. Investigation led me to believe that this anomaly was similar in nature to the borders between worlds, an area devoid of cognitive recognition. However this appeared in the middle of what is an otherwise dense area of activity and so must be at least somewhat different in nature." He took a glass of rich red wine from one of the servers, pausing for a moment to savour the taste before continuing. "What is apparent is that this anomaly appears to be spatially linked to somewhere, passing through it has led to the surface of a previously unknown world. We need a number of volunteers to travel to this world and determine if the origin of this anomaly can be determined from that side. I need data to work with, any unusual sources of investiture, strange behaviours of cognizance in the local populace, possibly even some foreign material. I require an expedition team to find anything out of place and report their findings." Nitinyas cast his gaze over the group once more, expectantly. "You will, of course be well-compensated for your efforts. And anyone who finds any information that leads to the source of this anomaly will be awarded a bonus reflective of their contribution."

At the far end of the room another set of double doors were pushed open by an elderly man wearing a fine suit, his well-groomed beard preceded the rest of him into the room as he looked over his assembled guests. "Good evening to all." The man said, putting one leg out and sweeping a small bow to the room. "Thank you for coming, I hope you're enjoying yourselves so far." He paused briefly, following a number of gazes that were directed towards a man who appeared to be trying to hit someone else with a wooden drumstick. The elderly man paused for a moment, wavering in how exactly to address this situation for a moment, before eventually he gave a small cough and turned away. "I am doctor Nitinyas, I'm something of a specialist so I'll understand if my work isn't familiar to all of you." Nitinyas let out a small joking smile. "But however familiar it is, you're all here so I assume you have some interest in the work that is at hand."

The young boy from the DA stopped next to KanMien. He continued staring impassively at the Jackal while flipping a small, sharp spike in one hand.

That should do the trick, I'll update this with exact points when I get a bit. Will also rescore Necromancer then.

"Not exactly normal, no." Laurelai replied. "He's been... away for a while. This is the first time I've heard of him seeing anyone in a long while." She winced as the roof of her mouth continued to burn. Laurelai ensured that she took her next drink more carefully, slowing sipping at the dark, bitter liquid as she thought over how best to reply. The topic of The Stranger had been an interesting one for a long time, she'd initially assumed it was just some kind of urban legend that the DA held, or some long-dead researcher who people still spoke of because of his achievments. But the R&D department had always insisted he was still alive and well, just busy with an experiment. Lita pulled out a coin, breaking Laurelai's train of thought as her eyes fixed on it. "What is this?" Lita asked. "Do you have any idea? It didn't always have these scales on the front - and it just sort of appeared in his hand." Laurelai carefully looked the coin over, but there were no signs of anything dangerous about it. Here goes nothing I suppose. Laurelai carefully extended a portion of the strange power that was both Selish and Rosharan. The power that the Nightwatcher had given her. She tried a small Forgery, an attempt to make the coin think that it had been placed on the table instead of held in a hand. She felt the power begin to trickle out of her, and then felt it be repelled by the coin. A tiny stream colliding with a solid wall. "Well it's Invested at the least." She remarked.

Several DA members stood up grinning. They had been content to sit and watch while matters unfolded, but if people wanted to make claims about what was and wasn't legal. Well so far there had only been one thing that was legalized officially, only one officially sanctioned action that was confirmed to be legal under this government. Spikes fell into hands as they looked expectantly towards the Jackal.

Yep, approved. Also, I'm betting 10 Chrysts that he gets killed before introductions are over.

Laurelai cracked a smile as Lita spoke. It would definitely be amusing to see Mac when he received a message like that, but at the same time she knew he'd been busy with something recently, best not to put more stress on him than he needed. "Something simple perhaps." She said. "Along the lines of 'I met with an entity that called itself the Stranger, though this is currently unconfirmed.' Simple is usually best." Laurelai ran her hands through her hair for a moment before pausing to rub at her temples. More stress was not something she needed today. Who knew what would happen because of this? Would the structure of R&D change? It already changed pretty much every other week anyway, but it could be even worse now. She took a large gulp of coffee, burning her mouth slightly as it hit her soft palate.
-
"Rusting hells." Laurelai echoed. What did this mean? Was the Stranger really back? And if so why hadn't anyone else heard about it yet? There were too many questions and too little information. She unconsciously cluthed at her dress once more as her eyes darted rapidly around the room, unfocussed but contemplating. "We'll have to tell someone I suppose." She sighed, sliding her spanreed pen out. "But what to say..." Suddenly she looked directly at Lita. "Actually, I suppose this is good practice. Care to take a shot at it? We'll need to let Mac know at the least. I'm honestly not sure who else we should report this to."
