Do anyone consider the possibility of Kaladin killing armed or even unarmed Moash by the end of Act 1? Like, with certain context, like, Moash forcing Kaladin to do it to prevent something more terrible? It would be really unexpected if Moash will die just there.
-
Moash surrendering smells like a big wet rat that will cause huge problems for Kaladin's mental health. I have a gut feeling he will be the one causing something that will lead Kaladin to surgeon job. I dont want to think that Kaladin may snap for a second and went on the bloodbath road for another second and then realize what he had done.

Prologue is actually very meaty. Not gonna dive into shipping, i dont like it, but the way Brandon presented Navani thoughts and view on Gavilar and Dalinar and how Gavilar doesnt trust her made me really think of Adolin/Shallan dynamic. Im really wonder will they follow the steps of Navani/Gavilar with all that truth/lies stuff. Brandon certainly build the foundation to explore that with this prologue.

Prologue made me think Gavilar may not be actually dead.

Wouldn't be surprised if he will return. I mean, i can speculate so much. Gavilar's PoV was left for a dessert with a purpose. Will he turn out to be main villain of first 5 books? Or be actually the good guy all along? I can see certain pattern when it comes to Gavilar's allies: Sadeas in Book 1 presented as bad guy, Sadeas in Book 2 dies, Amaram in Book 1 and 2 presented as bad guy, Amaram in Book 3 dies. Maybe Aesudan is also his ally, presented in Book 3. Did she die here? Will she die in Book 4? Going with the same pattern, Book 4 or Book 5 may reveal Gavilar as Final Boss of first 5 books. Then being also an Odium's Champion will fit him well. -
New prologue made very huge emphasis on Gavilar ambitions to rule forever. To become eternal. To go somewhere out there. He also had affinity with void sprens. Navani description of his eyes - like two void dots - was chilling. And then, when she stood near his corpse, emphasis on her thoughts. "He couldnt just die like that". As someone pointed out, there was very specific choice of words when Navani described the corpse of Gavilar: What if Gavilar's death, while unexpected so soon, was the plan on the path to become immortal? What if this is the requirement to ascend? What if his spirit somehow managed to jump into somewhere. Maybe with the help of Odium? Or via that magic box? Or within the void spheres? What do you think?

damnation, i thought about the same. Speculation purely: if its the case, i wouldnt be surprised if there was an invisible void spren that served as a phone between Aesudan and Gavilar so Aesudan could have easily warn Gavilar if someone will try to interrupt his conversation. The sudden way Aesudan took Navani by her arm to move away and then the sudden way she herself go away reminds me of the situation when one person want to distract another one for a minute to buy the time for her "team" to do their business.

I want to carefully analyze the Aesudan/Navani scene. Navani/Gavilar scene was the one that attracted the most attention, but as we know sometimes cunning authors hide more important details in the scenes that seems less important. Aesudan/Navani scene was put there for a certain reason and i bet it contain something more relevant for the story than Navani/Gavilar scene. Need to search for more hints.

Can someone please give a short summary of what happened in the chapter? English isnt my native language and its hard to listen to the reading without missing the meaning of half of the words.

All four are different types of bad guys. Moash is different than three other guys. He is bad guy but he is "in your face simple guy" who run around and kills and says "Yes, im a bad guy". Gavilar is the most scary one. Its really interesting how both Amaram and Sadeas are somewhat look like Gavilar's right and left hands, continuation of his will AND alike him personality wise. All three are manipulative slimy shady bastards, pretending to be the good guys. No wonder they attracted each other and formed coalition. Amaram is better at pretending. Gavilar is chillingly creepy and evil in the prologue. Sadeas looks more like his watered down copy or apprentice. Both dont try to pretend that hard as Amaram though. In terms of who gives me more evil vibes: 1) Gavilar 2) Amaram 3) Sadeas 4) Moash.

Yes. Now i believe Gavilar would be Odium's Champion. He fits. He is Dalinar's brother so thats why Dalinar felt terrible familiriaty. New prologue made it certain WHAT Gavilar planned for himself. Be eternal. Be most powerful. I have a gut feeling Brandon didnt describe Jasnah feeling when she saw his dead body just because. Gavilar CANT be dead. And, well, i believe at some point he WONT be. Odium will ressurect him or maybe Gavilar's spirit is somewhere in Odium's grip. Just to come back as his Champion. Being eternal, as he wished. He may be Darth Vader to Odium's Palpatine. And now i even speculate that Adolin, his nephew, like Luke, will bring him back to the light by the end of the series.

I guess it just the nickname given to him because the storms are usual thing on Roshar and Kaladin did some serious stuff as if he was blessed by the storm. There is also an obvious subtext - Kaladin is all about Stormfather and Honor. Stormblessed nickname is symbolic there.

I guess we will see Shallan and Adolin on their Shadesmar adventure for the large chunk of the book. Good way to explore their post-wedding relationships.
-
Real life Shallan has entered the chat.

Big TRUE! I hope and believe Brandon isnt from those writers who think that subversion of expectation on itself is a good thing. Subversion sucks if done wrong. Make Kaladin not a hero makes no sense with all that build up and WILL feel like a spit in the face. He must be a hero with glorious and epic ending.
-
Im not a fan of Kaladin x Happiness. Brooding Eyes are the part of him and one of the things that makes him Kaladin. Its fine to hurt.

Venli is probably the most interesting female character for Kaladin to interact with and vice versa. They share similar qualities and view on moral side of things. Also, i think, that scientific type of females suits Kaladin better than tomboyish one, and from that standpoint Venli is basically Jasnah/Shallan of the Parshendi. I hope in RoW we will see them meeting and interacting. That would be exciting thing to witness.

At this point i see no character that close to Odium's Champion candidate when it comes to build up. Adolin? We had some symbolism like number 9. We saw he could cross the line (with killing Sadeas). We saw him showing some possessive traits (like he talk to Shallan like she is a tool that he can protect or give to some one else (Kaladin). But, well, all of this dont look like a solid reason for him to become The Villain. I think, to become an actual candidate he needs to show something really nasty in RoW. He didnt have his Tusken Village to wipe out, so to speak, yet. Kaladin. The only solid reason for him to swap sides if there would be some revelation about Parshendi/Humans that would change everything and Kaladin will decide to side with Odium. Which is possible but not with a huge chances. Its anyway creates problems with Syl, so NO, the chances of Kaladin to become the champion are close to zero right now. Renarin had some stuff that may relate to Odium, but what are the chances that fragile, weak boy would become terrifying villain after getting some dark powerups? Can hardly see this. Some Kaladin or Adolin in the ray of holy light will whoop his evil chull mid diff. Jasnah? Hmmmm, maybe? But again, nothing in the three books point at her toying with Odium stuff. Maybe something will happen in the future, but i doubt it. Shallan. I doubt Dalinar would describe what he saw if he saw Shallan. No, its someone related to him or at least close enough (like Kaladin). Another option is resurrected Gavilar, or Gavilar actually didnt die, but that smells bad from the writing stand point now. Ishar. because he is also a Bondsmith, and Dalinar might saw something familiar in him. But i honestly doubt. It would be better for dramatic component if it would be someone close to Dalinar's heart rather than some of his collegue in business. Right now Adolin is the closest to being a candidate, but not because he had much build up towards it. Other characters just have even less of build up.
-
I will go and name either Ishar or Dalianr himself. Ishar because he is a fellow Bondsmith so Dalinar might have seen something familiar in him. Dalinar because no one expect spanish inquisiton him after Unity thing. But what if his arc isnt just the "from bad to good" arc, but the "from bad to good to bad again" arc? Not gonna say it will happen in Book 5, but by the Book 7 or 8? Who knows. I myself dont believe this is gonna be the case but what if Dalinar saw... himself?

Im Shalladin fan but i find the whole shipping community stuff around SA especially toxic and discussions absolutely unfun to participate in. I just go along with what Brandon will write in his books and thats it. One thing though id say for sure. I never understood why people bring Tarah when it comes to Kaladin romantic life. As much as Shallan and even Adolin have common dynamics and chemistry with Kaladin, Tarah is the opposite of that. They have literally one chapter on screen where Kaladin was younger and then she left. They have no common dynamics, they have nothing beside some past (that we didnt see) to share about. Its the couple that felt totally dull to me, way duller than even Kaladin-Jasnah. In terms of effect on Kaladin Tarah is basically Shallan minus everything Kaladin and Shallan shared in WoR and OB. The dullest possible outcome for Kaladin. I hope Tarahdin fans wont hate me for that opinion. I simply dont see enough substance within Tarah to consider her a good final pair for Kaladin in last two books. Its too late for her to be introduced as a serious secondary character and build her relationships with Kaladin, when all we had are books 4 and 5 where Brandon need to focus on main character struggles and culmination.

Its not that im not worried about Kaladin, but i like him being the surgeon. It reminds me of old mythos that inspired Tolkien. "The hands of a king are the hands of a healer"(c) Just like Aragorn, Kaladin has healing hands, and like Aragorn, he will certainly return better and as the king in the end of Book 4 or Book 5. Thats classic journey of this type of protagonist. It struck me now that Dalinar is pretty fitting for the role of Gandalf to Kaladin's Aragorn.

Windrunners - scouts and ambush squads. One of them is the King, who lead the army and nation, creates the strategy. Bondsmiths - Spiritual Leader, Pope, Shaman, the one who unites the people, tells them the words of wisdom and advices the King. One Windrunner and one Bondsmith create classic Warlord+Shaman duo. I think Jezrien and Ishar were those. Truthwatchers - scientists, researchers and providers of the information. Elsecallers - tacticians and supply providers. Dustbringers - firepower. Stonewardens - ground troops. Edgedancers - medics and health care providers. Willshapers - provide infrastructure: communication, transportation and logistics. Lightweavers - spies and people of art and culture. Skybreakers - judicial system and police.

Knight(s) of.... King(s) of... I guess. Cant find as epic and fitting first word for K as those.

I just got very bad thought that Kaladin and Shallan wont cross their paths during the whole RoW, Shallan will be on her trip with Adolin, and Kaladin would have the business with Dalinar and Jasnah, and by the end of the book Shallan will decide to break up with Adolin and come to visit Kaladin just to see him and Jasnah being a couple. That would the "Holy Yikes" moment for them all.

To me both Fleet Running story and Girl Who Looked Up are metaphorical representation of Kaladin and Shallan character arcs. It may be interprented either as foreshadowing, or the lesson both need to learn, or the future they have to challenge. In my opinion both stories represents the beginnings of both character arcs. Kaladin has to run forward, run, run and run, without mercy for himself. Is it good for him? Will he manage to save everyone without sacrificing himself, his own happiness? Shallan is the girl who has to destroy the wall of delusion she is hiding behind. Will she look up? Will she stood up? I doubt both characters will meet the same fate as Hoid told him. After all, Brandon's words imply that both Kaladin and Shallan may do better than Fleet and Girl who looked up, in the very end, and ther character arcs will bring them right there.
