I really like the name Shallan, I think the sound and the look of it is pretty. I even like it enough to (maybe) give it to my future daughter, but then inevitably I would have to explain where it came from and who her namesake was. That would be a bit of an awkward conversation...

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Truthweaver replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
You know you're a Sanderfan when you work at a library and you try to apply Sanderson books to every possible book recommendation request. Patron: "Hi, I'm looking for something good to read. Preferably historical fiction." Me: "Well have I got the thing for you! It's called Mistborn: A Secret History! It has the word history in the title, and it's fiction! It's historical fiction fiction!" Patron: "Uh...I really don't think..." Me: "Here, take it. Don't worry about getting addicted; there's plenty more where that came from." -

I'm glad it amuses you, because I do that with everyone anyway. It makes for some entertaining forum-browsing. -

Welcome to the shard! Have an upvote. I can't wait for Oathbreaker either--who's your favourite Stormlight Archives character?

Haha, that's pretty much it. It's not so bad with R, but with K...when I found out Kelsier was supposed to be a blonde (I think that's right?) I was actually annoyed. And my brain refused to picture it. He will always have black hair in my weird, picky imagination. -
Ham. He seems more cheerful, and I think I'd enjoy his philosophical puzzles. Would you rather be best friends with Hoid or Kelsier?

Lightweaver. I like disguises. And delicious lies. Would you rather live on Era 2 Scadrial, or Sel?

Shallan's artistry. I like to consider myself artistic, but having talent like hers would be amazing. Would you rather be a Soother or a Rioter?

An Aluminum Gnat. If I ever ended up on Threnody and encountered a Shade, I could burn it to save myself. Would you rather be a Parshendi in Stormform, or hemalurgically spiked and under Ruin's control?

I have grapheme-color synesthesia. Everyone's name has its own separate colour too, depending on the letter their name starts with. For some reason, I always picture people whose names start with K or R as having black hair and can't imagine them as blonde. Also, I can clearly remember things that happened to me at two years old better than I can remember things that happened to me at ten. -
Random Stuff X: Something Weird
Truthweaver replied to marsoupial's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
I almost got my mom to watch the Harry Potter movies by telling her she could see Violet Crawley brandish a stick and utter gibberish. -
I got goosebumps reading that letter. Amazing! Definitely interested in reading more about this world.

Seerius Literachur is the only literature. Never-ending blocks of text, confusing dialogue, and strange punctuation is a must. Making readers work to actually understand your story gives them a sense of accomplishment. And probably a headache.
-
No problem. Don't forget those little quote thingies sometimes, for dialogue. And maybe add some paragraphs if you're feeling particularly adventurous. People like those, too.

I know, that's the frustrating part. In my head: "Wow, this scene is amazing! Conflict, suspense, everything! I can't wait to write it!" Writing it: "No...no, it was supposed to be better than this! Why isn't it awesome? Why...???" *Lays head down on desk in defeat* But yeah, I tell myself that as long as I can just have something on the page to work with, I'll be able to tweak it to match my imaginings. Oddly, it sometimes helps to set yourself low expectations.
-
*Raises hand* I'm always afraid the scene will never be as awesome as I planned out. But I just go ahead and write it anyway and tell myself that I'll change it once I actually get it written. I find it's a lot easier to go back and fix a scene once it's actually out of my head, even if it's not as amazing as I imagined, heheh.

I probably have the most in common with Shallan--I love to draw (though I can never get my people to look realistic, just cartoonish) I try to avoid confrontation at all costs and hate when anyone in my family is arguing, and I have this need to keep the mood as light as possible. I don't think I'm as witty, though. Nor do I have a tragic backstory. The character I love the most but also have the least in common with is Kaladin. I think it's his drive to bring people together and how seriously he cares about protecting others that appeals to me. He's by far my favourite character in any book I've read, Shallan being a close second. Maybe subconsciously I want to care about people as much as he does? Not that I don't care about people but I very much enjoy working alone, and getting into a team mentality is hard for me. I expect I'd probably be good friends with Shallan, maybe Kaladin. Vin intimidates me, haha, but Elend I could see myself getting along well with, same with Raoden. I'm a hopeless optimist, too.

My dad googled "good fantasy books" because he had run out of things to read, and bought The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. He kept telling me how good this book was, how good the world-building was, and random facts about the culture. ("Everyone's divided by eye color, so you would have to call me Brightlord and be my scribe, you lowly darkeyes! Mwahaha. Also, your safehand is showing.") I told him I would probably give the book a try when he was done with it. Then we went on a plane trip together, the book I had brought wasn't keeping my interest, my dad was in the washroom and the Way of Kings was lying on his seat. So I picked it up and opened to the middle of the book to get a sense of this guy's writing style. My life was changed forever. Just one sentence about Dalinar trying to preserve his reputation had me hooked. I wanted to keep reading from there, find out about the character's problem and who he was, but I forced myself to start at the beginning of the book like a normal person. I looked at the size of the book and remember thinking "I'm going to devote myself to reading this and understanding everything that happens, even if the plot is super complex!" I read WoK and WoR, then I think I started with Warbreaker next because I remember being surprised that actual mammals existed in this world and it wasn't also a rocky wasteland. I can't remember though if I made the connection between Nightblood and Szeth's new sword. After that I read the Mistborn series, and sometime at that point I looked something about the books up online and found myself on the Coppermind, and from there I discovered the Cosmere, though it took me a while to figure out what it all was. Since then I've read the Wax and Wayne series, Elantris, the Reckoners series, The Rithmatist, Alcatraz, and Arcanum Unbounded, and I've loved all of them!

What are your Cosmere names?
Truthweaver replied to Borio Singaldi's topic in General Brandon Discussion
FotS: First of the Dawn (cool, I like it) Vorin: Hannah (my real name is already a palindrome. Possibly blasphemous though, considering I'm a darkeyes.) Unkalaki: Kamunitariukalaki'otuara'kalorkuitaro Shin: Hannah-daughter-daughter-Elizabeth Korathi: Enara (Aon Ena means kindness.) Returned: Talespinner (for my habit when I was younger to make up stories and tell them to anyone who'd listen.) Threnodite: Remember Patience (this is a real Puritan name I heard somewhere, thought it sounded cool.) -

@A Budgie I got the Stormlight shirt for Christmas and the fabric is so soft, the shirt fits really well, and it's become my favourite t-shirt to wear just because it's so comfortable. I would definitely buy another shirt from there again.
