It's interesting to see lost Shardblades disappearing from the PR. That explains why there are less than 100 known Shards. It's heartwarming to see Maya smile. Ok, Shallan becoming Drehy and sucking in his Stormlight is big. Was that her DID or just some good old Radiant powers? Probably DID, but healing might have help or something. So if she can change her Identity at will, what can she do with it? And later Shallan just manifested Radiant with a physical body. Finally a confirmation of what we thought was possible. Quite powerful if you ask me, she can Lightweave an entire army to fight for her if given enough light. Lift has a bad influence on Nightblood - she's encouraging him to eat more! I hope Nightblood will get something to eat. Can Szeth just unsheath him by 1 inch and give him a sweet treat to consume or something? Galant and Skar scenes were hilarious! And did Shallan just swear a new Truth?? 4th Ideal with Pattern? Resworn Ideal with Testament? What was with those Words?? I thought at first that the author is comparing the current times to pre-Recreance times. Radiant bonds are indeed rare now compared to what they were in the ancient past. But I doubt there are many readers who remember those times so it's kind of pointless. Maybe if they bond with a spren, otherwise I don't think so.

Yes, it was HIS reason for hunting Radiants and I do agree with all you said - it doesn't make any sense. But I was pointing out that the Diagram was predicting the same bridge that Ishar and Nale feared. But Nale wrongly believed Radiants will form it, while the Diagram predicted Eshonai with her Stormform will form it. This is all my belief, with no concrete evidence.

Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
alder24 replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I agree, the new revelation about ancient spren combined with Eila Stele does indeed suggest that Dawnsingers didn't worship Shards, but only the most powerful of ancient spren, like the Wind, Stone and others. True Spren were treated more like friends (Leshvi had a Honorspren friend). -
Wrong section. All topics that include spoilers from WaT should be in the Spoiler Zone. Kind of. Modern Old Magic is associated with Cultivation but it's its own weird thing. The initial idea of Rosharan magic systems were 3 sets of ten, which might suggest something like Lifebending exists. Yup, it has been confirmed by Brandon multiple times: I do agree. I believe that Voidbinding is a mix of all three Shards. What is a magic system? Even Brandon asks this question in WoBs above. Is Windrunning its own magic system, or is the Surge of Gravitation its own magic system? Maybe its just Surgebinding as a whole? It isn't as strongly defined as it was in Mistborn series, so personally I'm looking at the entire Surgebinding as the whole as one magic system - Windrunners, Skybreakers and every surge is a part of it, just like Mistings, Mistborns or Twinborns aren't individual systems each, but are just a part of one magic system called Allomancy. And when taking a closer look at this number "10," I'm thinking of each Surge individually, not every combination you can make with them mixing together (each Twinborn isn't a new magic system). Their Surges behave almost exactly as those of Radiants. It doesn't matter they can access only one Surge, Fused are are Surgebinders: Every glyph has a mirror symmetry? But that's not the case. Renarin clearly doesn't have Voids of Division and Abrasion, he has the Void of Illumination, he uses Illumination, he creates some weird illusions, lights and visions - that's not what Division or Abrasion is about, it's Illumination. It was even suggested by Brandon to Argent (WoB). I don't believe that mixing two abilities, one from Surgebinding and other from Voidbinding, creates a new type of magic system (again, Twinborns aren't a new magic system), rather Renarin is both a Surgebinder and a Voidbinder at the same time. He uses two different magic systems at the same time - sounds familiar? Check out the second link in the footnotes of the first WoB:

Not really. Most orders attract a spectrum of different people and while some tend to gravitate towards specific ones, being a Stoneward doesn't exclude you from being a scientist (but scientists are more likely to be Truthwatchers, Elsecallers or Lightweavers). That would be quite a useful combination, but it all hinges on one assumption - Tension and Cohesion can modify or even create gemstones. I find this very, very unlikely. Even with Soulcasting you can't make gemstones, I doubt you could do it with Stoneshaping or Tension. It's possible they would be able to purify a gemstone and change its shape, but that probably would require a skilled Stoneward. Using those powers to make metal cages would be handy and possible. WoR Shallan and Jasnah trip to the shattered plains
alder24 replied to Aryon's topic in Stormlight Archive
Simple answer, ships are always faster than moving on foot through a cold, desolate wasteland. Ships are really fast - that's the reason they were the main means of long distance transportation before the invention of trains. People were settling mainly alongside sea coasts, rivers or lakes to have access to fast ships. -
Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
alder24 replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Honor and Cultivation settled together in the system before Odium came and Odium was later given permission to settle with them. They were already significantly invested on Roshar before Odium arrived with humans and this is evident by the presence of sapient True Spren, who didn't exist pre-Shattering. Interestingly enough, Brandon stated that all sentient spren appeared after Honor and Cultivation settled in the system and the Wind looks very sentient to me. This might mean that every pre-Shattering Old Magic spren was changed by the arrival of Honor and Cultivation and gained sentience as the result. Some were changed significantly (Nightwatcher) others not that much (the Wind). This makes sense because winds are strongly associated with Honor, even Syl said in OB ch 6 that "the winds are of Honor." -
Roshar, Ashyn and Braize should be counted as one system, because it counts as one system for Shards settled there. Yolen as far as we know is Shardless, so it might not have a "significant Shardic influence." The same goes for the First of the Sun - it has Patji, the Avatar of Autonomy inhabiting it, so it might count as a significant influence, but if Brandon meant more along the lines of being inhabited by a Shard, then it wouldn't count. Threnody should 100% count, it was probably inhabited by at least Ambition, if not Ambition and Mercy together and till this the planet bears terrific scars left behind by a Shardic duel. Not to mention the Night Brigade. Komashi&UTol similarly - it is inhabited by Splintered Virtuosity and something big will happen there. It's even more problematic because we still don't know the location of 5 Shards - Invention, Mercy, Valor, Whimsy and the last unknown Shards. Each of them may be settled in their own system. However Brandon wasn't just talking about planets inhabited/influenced by Shards, he was talking about words important to his story of Cosmere, so this is my guess: Roshar/Braize/Ashyn Scadrial Sel Nalthis Taldain Komashi/UTol First of the Sun Threnody Dharti Yolen

Hello, welcome to the Shard. Check out Sharder FAQ for some useful tips. I don't believe it would work. I personally think that F-Nicrosil works like any other metalmind (except for F-copper and F-aluminum), which means you can't store 100% of your magical ability and you can only tap it for as long as you have stored it. For example, you can store 80% of your Allomantic power for an hour (leaving you at 20% strength) and later tap for an hour to gain 80% (putting you at 180%). But it's not like a Coppermind - Malwish Medallions are like a Coppermind but they are confirmed to be a bit different. However we don't know a lot about F-nicrosil and this is just a big speculation. So at best you store a power you have in a Hemalurgic spike for a week at 80% strength, remove that spike and tap it to gain this 80% for a week with no spike in you. The spike would still have that charge at full strength, because once you stop storing, it returns to its normal state.

@Kfish Please, watch out for old topics. This topic has been dead for almost 4 years. Reviving such topics and necro-posting is against the site's policy. Personally I think this ship sank with RoW - there was basically no interaction between those two. If they were meant to be in a relationship in the future, there would be some nice moments, but there were none.

What Vasher was doing during the occupation.
alder24 replied to Crucible of Shards's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The same thing, just faster and requiring less anti-light. It doesn't matter if it's Cognitive Shadow or a normal person, their soul will get annihilated. Here is a related WoB about eating anti-Lerasium: Agreed. An explosion is just a rapid release of energy. If the release is gradual enough, it won't produce any explosion. Energy is still generated by it, quickly dispersing within the flesh, burning it as a result. From the description above we can see it took a considerable amount of time, it wasn't instantaneous. Yes, it could probably just suck out his Divine Breath without touching his soul. -

alder24 replied to Crucible of Shards's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There was no anti-Voidlight in the knife, Raboniel revered the knife to drain his Stormlight, he wouldn't have exploded because his spirit web wasn't under pressure, unlike lights in a gemstone (Raboniel's daughter didn't explode) and solid investiture is more resilient to this reaction. RoW ch 107: RoW ch 97: -

alder24 replied to Crucible of Shards's topic in Cosmere Discussion
He knows this for sure. However it would work anyway. Any anti-investiture interacting with any investiture would cause annihilation, but if you were to match them together the reaction would be stronger. Nightblood is ridiculously invested, Vasher would need to create a huge amount of anti-investiture to destroy him - too big. -
It's not about if he wanted to do it, it's if he had to be doing this. Compounding takes time - it's just burning metals. If he had 1000 years of memories to Compound, even if he were to filter some of them out, it would still take a considerable amount of time to burn all those Copperminds. If he were to keep his memories in the constant refreshed state to the point of perfectly engraving them in his mind, he would need to Compound everything very, very often. And with that amount of memories, he would have to do it all the time. Would he care enough to do it at all? And that's how we going back to my initial idea. If I were Rashek, bored out of my mind, in a state of extreme apathy, I wouldn't want to spend all my time to Compound 1000 years of memories and keep re-remembering potentially painful, or boring things. I would only Compound everything with duralumin just to check if I should remember someone that just killed my Inquisitor.
-
Yes, it will work if Rashek were to constantly keep one outcome of copper compounding in his mind, while storing the other in a metalmind - but if he were to store all his compound memories, they're gone from his mind. The question is did he want to remember everything all the time? Moreover, how much time would he have to spend to compound more than 1000 years worth of memories? He had to do it fairly regularly and often because he remembered Kelsier and recent events perfectly. Would he want to spend every single moment of his life compounding copper alongside Atium?
-
I can think of only one reason for why Dalinar would "destroy" Sleepless - Dawnshard. Sleepless are protecting the Change Dawnshard from everyone. If Dalinar making the choice of Honor makes him even more dangerous and more likely to destroy them, maybe he will need that Dawnshard to remake Honor and Sleepless would try to prevent any use of it at all costs. Of course, other than that, there is an obvious "Fused Dalinar will mess up all of Roshar" but that doesn't explain why he's more dangerous now and why he will destroy Sleepless specifically. And "the decision of Honor" sounds very much like this Death Rattle.
-
Couldn’t that just be Feruchemical copper savantism? Instead of sticking specific memories into your mind, it would slowly expand your memorization abilities and increase how long a memory can last without degradation. What if Rashek just duralumin compound his copperminds, whenever he needed? He would get an instant flash of all memories stored in them, one set of duplicated memories would be immediately stored in a new coppermind, while the other would just remain in his mind.

No idea. I have no experience with throwing knives. Should be possible and easier than wings, but the knife might just spiral uncontrollably out of its trajectory as its center of mass is shifting. You kind of have to have a physics degree to really understand what will happen in order to create accurate visualization - not your average Awakener.

SPOILERS ERA 1 & SH - Question About Secret History
alder24 replied to Era1Forever's topic in Mistborn
That was Eland, that was his mind, the same as it was in the Physical Realm. And that's a very normal behavior. People smile and feel content when they fade into the Beyond. SH ch 1-1: We don't know what's in the Beyond, not even Shards can reach there, we don't even know if it exists. I'm guessing different people sense different feelings from the Beyond. Kelsier felt dark nothingness because he wanted to postpone death for as long as possible out of selfish reasons - he wasn't at peace with himself. Elend was at peace, he saved his people, defeated Ruin, he didn’t fear death - he felt accomplished and could finally rest. He most likely sensed a comforting feeling from the Beyond. -
Awakened objects get "stronger" within the limits of the material used, but Lifeless don't. They are as strong as the body is - unless you make a hybrid like Kalad's Phantoms where Breaths are acting like a sinew moving the stone body. Never heard of them. Looking at it now, aren't those beans just seeds with larva in it? So making that larva into a Lifeless would be possible, but not both the larva and the seed. It would be hard because they are inside the bean (how would you even get to that larva to make it into a Lifeless) and need to eat it from the inside out - Lifeless don't metabolize (so you can't plant an already Lifeless larva into a normal bean). Moreover a Lifeless like this won't be even able to see anything that's outside of the seed because the walls of the seed prevent that. So that's not a very useful scout. How about Awakening the moth that grows up from that larva - it can fly! If you really want to have a jumping Lifeless bug, bow about a flea or a grasshopper? Their view is not obstructed by any seed, they jump impressively far and they can bite you. Colors! You've got me How about spring? Why complicate something that's already simple? Yes and no. It's like a steelsight and it has a hard time seeing through walls as they appear as a solid wall of blue lines - at best it would see strong metal sources behind, but I doubt it. Yes, there you go
-
They should not, but they do experience G forces. And yes, Stormlight makes it manageable. WoR ch 52:
-
No idea. I doubt it. Not really, daggers are way too heavy and would require relatively big wings (comparable to a bird of the same mass). Without a proper tail the steering would be impossible. The maneuverability and the range of such things would be tragic. Not to mention it's metal and it's not a bird. It's easier to just throw a normal knife and use Lifeless birds to drop flechettes on your enemies.
-
Swords are of no use here, make a new weapon! Weapons generally aren't made with movable parts, your best choice is to make improvised weapons - ropes and clothes are the best choices here. Use a lot of stuff to overwhelm your enemy, force them to divide their attention and defend against multiple different types of attacks, from every direction. As an Awakener you can basically become a one man army - use that to your advantage. Mistcloak with metal/wooden spikes sew into the end of each ribbon, Awakened to protect/attack by stabbing. Ropes with spikes/knives at the end, Awakened to stab. Long ropes Awakened to grab your arms by one end, while searching for heavy objects like rocks or pots to grab with the other and throw at your enemy. Some kind of Awakened garrote, like a very thin but strong rope/wire Awakened to choke, if you can throw it precisely at the neck - it would be very hard to cut, unlike a rope and it would eat into the flesh making it impossible to remove. Even if it were to hit a limb, it would basically immobilize that limb causing bleeding, so it's still very useful. Awaken a rope woven into a chain, making it resistant to cuts but also performing the same function as an Awaken rope - it should be possible, maybe with more Breaths than usual. It would hit hard and precisely, but also act on its own. Even Awakened strawmen can carry knives and syringes filled with poison trying to stab the enemy. Lifeless scorpions and spiders, Commanded to bite Awakener's enemies and inject venom into them. Lifeless bugs that bite very hard, Commanded to eat their opponent alive - especially eyes. Lifeless rodent - small, fast and hard to hit, biting hard and deep. Classic Lifeless human bodies - why fight at all if you can make the dead fight for you?

Ishar did try to steal that. I think destiny might be something like this.
