To add my two cents, in Era I there were pocket watches and canned food. TLR's grip and influence on what technology was available was very strong, and in my mind advanced smelting processes and cast/crucible steel is not too much of a stretch. In fact, in a society like that I would expect those scientific advances in metallurgy.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

Things the black spheres definitely are

The black spheres are what drove the Heralds mad. -

To be fair, an unpracticed user of Gravitation could be very dangerous as well, just in a completely different way.

If I understand it correctly, they are able to use Division, but they are not allowed to use it until they have their own spren. And if we know anything about the Skybreakers, it's that they only do what they are authorized to do.

So if I understand this correctly, Skybreaker squires are able to use Division, they are just not allowed to until they have their own spren/swear the Third Ideal.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Crucible of Shards replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
1 .If Hoid were to overcome or bypass his aversion to causing harm (either temporarily or permanently) and proceeded to cause someone harm, would there be any consequences for him acting against the aversion, magical or otherwise? If so, what would they be? 2. The royal locks are an expression of having a fragment of a divine breath. Is or is not this fragment divided when a new heir is made? Is there a net increase of investiture separate from the normal net increase involved with a new Nalthian's single breath? Does Endowment maintain the royal locks directly, or is it a (cosmere) natural process? -
...should ask Brandon the following for me: If Hoid were to bypass his aversion to causing harm (either temporarily or permanently) and proceeded to cause someone harm, would there be any consequences for him acting against the aversion, magical or otherwise? If so, what would they be?

I think Zahel/Vasher's primary motivations are the safety/comfort of his friends and himself. He doesn't seem terribly ambitious at this point. I think he's just found a gig that suits him and is trying to not attract too much suspicion. His skill with a shardblade has earned him this. We know for a fact his devotion to Vorinism hasn't. He is an eminently practical man. If things get too hot for him, I think he'll try to hop worlds.

I believe that Brandon has said in the past that anyone who did the sorts of things Szeth did would have the same experience, so I believe it doesn't have anything to do with the Unmade. I'd have to go check the wording though. Edit: Here it is- Blightsong Is anything magical going on with the screams Szeth hears? Brandon Sanderson Uhhh, Szeth's screams. Uhhm, I'm trying to decide how to answer this. It is not, see here's the thing. What we would call magical may not be considered magical in the Cosmere, but it depends on your definition of magic. Would Szeth if he were on our planet and have done those things would he hear those screams, probably not, but would someone else in the Cosmere who had gone through what he had gone through hear those screams, yes. Blightsong So it has to do with the spiritual realm? Brandon Sanderson Yea, mhmm, yea.

I have actually proposed a theory that they have already met: And, I agree, it would be quite amusing.

@Quantus I just know there's something we're missing about this, and I just can't piece it together. Hopefully Brandon will actually write Nightblood, because I can't wait.

The problem I have with this, is that Breath (and Divine Breath) are separate from what is passed on through sDNA. Children of people with a large amount of breath are still born with only one. Obviously, the Royal locks are descended directly from a Returned, but the Breath is distinct from the person and their progeny. It does not alter a person's sDNA. Rosharan lighteyes are lighteyed because the Investiture directly altered their sDNA. I don't see this as an equivalent circumstance because breath is distinct from sDNA. I'll concede to you on this. You explained this very well, and it makes sense to me. Sorry if I came off harsh in my original response. I really do appreciate you helping me think about this.
-
I apprecfiate these responses, but I feel like they aren't getting to the heart of the question. The bearers of the royal locks do not have a divine breath. They inherited a "fragment" (according to the annotations). But when they have children, they do not lose that fragment. Instead, it appears to be duplicated, a la Calvin and Hobbes. Even though only the heir passes it down, there is still (if I understand it correctly) either a temporary net increase in investiture, since more people are gaining the royal locks through birth, or the fragment of divine breath is being diluted. (Or, it's being maintained somehow).

I believe with Honor dead, the heralds no longer have direct access to his essence (and the fantastical level of power associated with that). But someone correct me if I'm wrong.
