I haven't had time to read many comments for the past couple days, but I wanted to mention just how much I loved this part of chapter 20. Man, this just hits the nail on the head for so many issues going on today. "You're different than me so you're less than me" is a mentality some unfortunately have even if they wouldn't admit it. I love how Brandon weaves important messages like this into fictional stories.

My first thought was that we could at least rule out Wit lol

I know what you're saying. I still think it's possible Fortune could revolve around probabilities, but maybe it's fine tuned a bit to define what probabilities can actually be altered. In an RPG it's a little more straightforward because you can program "Luck counters X, Y, Z." It'd all depend on how Brandon defined what it could do, if that's even similar to how Fortune works at all.

When I first saw Fortune in the Mistborn series my mind gravitated towards leveling up your character's Luck in an RPG like Dark Souls. In that game you may get hit with a sword that has a 30% chance of causing you to bleed out, but if your Luck increases, it can reduce that chance of a bleed out to say, 15%. I always kind of assumed Fortune was similar to this in that if someone tapped Fortune in a fight, it would cause the person using it to land and dodge attacks with a higher probability. I envision it like statistical probability really. Tapping Fortune would increase the probability of success while decreasing the probability of failure, from a statistics reference. Even though probability is a little harder to measure than something like weight, it can still be measured. Like a coin flip from a non-biased coin would always give you a 50% probability of landing heads. That's measurable, and maybe tapping Fortune could change your likelihood of getting heads to 60%. Now, the probability of landing a punch in a fight...that's a little more difficult to determine the default probability of. It would change depending on the skill of the fighter/skill of who they're fighting. But once you had some sort of probability determined for landing a punch, tapping Fortune could raise the odds of the punch landing successfully. Brandon may have an entirely different idea for how Fortune works, but this general idea was what came to my mind when I first read about it.

Actually what Harmony did was release mobile phones equipped with Snapchat so that all of Scadrial could start snapping more frequently.

But is the healing Renarin can perform any different than Dalinar using Stormlight to heal himself? Progression is a useful surge if you need to heal someone who can't consume Stormlight, but I always assumed you wouldn't need to use Progression on another Radiant, because the Radiant could simple heal their own wounds.

My thoughts as well. I'm not 100% sold on Dalinar being the author, but I think today's chapters helped the cause of it being him more.
-
I personally think the new chapters helped put Dalinar back into some consideration, given the ardents are starting to label him a heretic.

[OB] Adolin's Fate in Oathbringer and beyond. A poll.
Andy92 replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think it's a little early to say Adolin would never be jealous of the Radiants just because he isn't now. We're still fairly early into the series of Radiants being known about publicly. I agree that Adolin has handled himself well up until now, he even was the one encouraging Renarin to summon his blade. But I think it's a bit premature to declare that he'll never become jealous over time. That's simply something we don't know one way or the other. -
Well I'm pretty sure that fans aren't allowed to publish fan fiction for profit that uses the world/characters that were created by another author. I honestly don't see how a fan theory could be considered off limits for an author to use. The author is the one with the copyright on the book series, not the fan. Even so, there would have to be a LOT of evidence that the author intentionally stole a specific idea. The internet is a vast place, so chances are the use of a fan theory would be coincidental. Or, the fan just interpreted the foreshadowing correctly and happened to guess what the author had planned anyways. There are too many variables. Look at musicians trying to sue other musicians for plagiarizing songs. They almost always lose because it isn't an exact copy, and art is open to interpretation.

The possibility of Adolin reviving his dead spren is a popular theory. Not sure if it will happen or not, but there are moments in the book where he talks to his blade as you've said. I think it's possible but I'm not sure if it will happen.

[OB] Adolin's Fate in Oathbringer and beyond. A poll.

I picked 3 options. The Han Solo type character that becomes close friends with Kaladin; dies in a heroic way sometime in the series defending someone he loves. -

@ethan_sedai You've also got those slot canyons in your area that remind me of the chasms in the Shattered Plains. I hiked through one in northern Arizona a couple years ago. I always did get that western U.S., rocky land, low vegetation vibe from a lot of places on Roshar.

@Calderis I hadn't actually read the alternative ending so thanks for clarifying that part. I knew Szeth wasn't stabbed, so I guess I assumed in the alternate ending he just ended up badly injured instead of "dead." I also agree that the original ending is my favorite. I get why Brandon wanted Kaladin to grow into this character that was against killing, but at the same time, Kaladin simply is not his father. Kaladin is going to kill to protect others if absolutely necessary.

My only issue with it being Szeth is that he arguably became less close to death after Brandon changed the ending of that fight scene. He went from being stabbed to just kind of giving up.

[OB] Shalladin isn't as bad of an idea as you think.
Andy92 replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
You've all made some valid points, but it's also some evidence as to why the betrothal was more of a power move on Jasnah's part and didn't really have much to do with romance. Although the two do seem to be genuinely falling for each other. I just don't think Shallan's split personalities/surpressed truths from her past are going to bode too well in a relationship. That goes for both Adolin and any potential thing with Kaladin imo. I personally have a hard time trusting Shallan 100%. -

Andy92 replied to eveorjoy's topic in Stormlight Archive
I personally never understood the Shallan/Adolin betrothal too much personally. Jasnah: "You tried to steal my soulcaster (even though it was fake) while lying being my back, and you got yourself poisoned by an ardent that you fell too hard for while showing poor judgment. I think you'd be a great match for my cousin." -
@maxal We got chapters 13-15 today...don't jump too far ahead.

[OB] Shallan is Insane - and I can prove it.
Andy92 replied to aeromancer's topic in Stormlight Archive
I also assumed that was Radiant speaking of Shallan in the third person. Otherwise, I'd imagine Brandon would've added a "Pattern said" in there to clarify. That flow of conversation was between Radiant and Adolin.- 77 replies

The interludes always take place at the end of each main part. This book's part one just happens to be 32 chapters long.
