[OB] Urithiru and the Sibling
Wandering Investor replied to DracostarA's topic in Stormlight Archive
Ooo that's an interesting WoB. I was starting to think maybe the sibling represented the land, which is personified in a lot of different ways, and thus the personality of the siblings could be changing depending on where it was, or maybe the sibling could be in multiple places, hence 'they' even though it is all one entity. But a non-binary spren has the potential to be interesting. I'm curious how Brandon will write it. -
Deep Ones in Shadows for Silence
Wandering Investor replied to Crucible of Shards's question in Cosmere Q&A
Found it, thanks! Definitely sounds like the deep ones enforce the simple rules like the shades. So maybe an older/super shade. My intuition says it could be a different type of cognitive shadow though as nothing about the shades makes it sound like they would stay in deep places, but not much evidence to go on. -
Deep Ones in Shadows for Silence
Wandering Investor replied to Crucible of Shards's question in Cosmere Q&A
I do not recall any mention of Deep Ones and a search doesn't show any in the Arcanum. Would you be able to quote the mention? -
WHAT Do you know how long I've been looking for evidence of what's outside the cosmere?!?! Neat, although its kinda confusing why the shards would stick around.
-
Breaching between the realms tends to require lots of energy, so I would be surprised if there was one with these capabilities, although it is possible. And no, Odium did not create a planet.
-
No, Odium has thus far avoided investing himself as much as possible and a planet would require a lot of investing. He is currently invested on the planet Braize, although it is unknown if this was on purpose or not. And Braize already existed before he arrived. So far as I know, only Preservation and Ruin have gone so far as to create a new planet, every other known shard settled on an existing one. As for his magic system, we don't know what it would look like yet.

Oh, so you're talking about putting a physical object into either the spiritual realm or cognitive realm, and then retrieving for later use? I'm not aware of any that work with the spiritual realm, although if that were the case, that'd be your best bet. And for the cognitive, you'd have to be able to create perpendicularity, which require a lot of power. Your Elsecallers and and Willshapers may be able to do so, which large amounts of investiture required. Assuming no one messed with the object while it was in the cognitive. But if you're looking for storing it in a magical pocket dimension.. no.

@Calderis @RShara The problem is quoting WoB's from memory is that the Keepers of the 17thShard call you out on them, and then you can't find them. (its not a problem, yall are awesome). Search in progress, but now I'm doubting my memory. I recall it saying the stone was hidden in Jah Kaved but had gone dun shortly after. I'm suspecting this is incorrect, or from another source than WoB. I remember being disappointed after reading it, because I thought the gemstone was special, which is the only reason I remember it, cause it was quite awhile ago.

@SzethIsBadAsHell Gavilar was seen with two spheres containing what appears to be voidlight. One he gave to Eshonai, the other to Szeth. Somewhat confusingly, he warned Szeth "they must not get it" whoever they are, even though he had already given one out to Eshonai with no warning. WoB confirmed that the gem given to Szeth was hidden in another city an has already ran out. One theory is that Gavilar had access to an unmade trapped beneath the palace, possibly BAM due to a quote about BAM providing voidlight to the parsh, and can obtain voidlight from the unmade.

@ScarletSabre Oh I know about age allowing for quicker time perception. But I also got the impression that she is purposely ignoring the world, so as to not think about how long Taln has been in damnation. Either or both is possible.

[OB] Who has the most Named character kills
Wandering Investor replied to SzethIsBadAsHell's topic in Stormlight Archive
This is kinda a tilted scenario. Shallan's arc as an information gather requires more detailed interactions, leading to more named antagonist, leading to more fights with named characters. Kal and Adonlin have killed for more people, but their arcs as soldiers require them to be on the battle field, where armies are more important than the individuals. Also, Szeth followed by Dalinar for named, Dalinar followed by Szeth for non-named ^^ -
You are correct that it is related to her not wanting worship. She feels guilty for leaving Taln in damnation alone, and believes the heralds are not worthy of worship. To this end, she compulsively tries to destroy any artwork featuring her. Emphasis on the compulsively. She also mentions she doesn't notice the time passing. That may just be her age, or another part of her maddness, trying not to think about anything.

gemhearts The Ecology of Roshar
Wandering Investor replied to SzethIsBadAsHell's topic in Stormlight Archive
I would doubt this. There is no indication that stormlight can traverse through stone. Gems have to be exposed directly to the highstorm to recharge. Gemstones inside of a building will not recharge, so I do not think stones buried would do otherwise. The crem deposited by the highstorm is of a magical nature, and that's what allows plant-life to flourish on Roshar. It has been hinted that gemstones/stormlight can be used to encourage plant growth, but it has not been shown how. This probably involves stormlight directly hitting the planets, not being buried. -
[OB] Okay, so who exactly had the cold?
Wandering Investor replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
Were those three confirmed to be the ones that brought the cold to Roshar? I had always assumed it had happened earlier in the past. -
As Calderis said, I don't think it is possible to not be connected to all the shards, unless maybe that shard is dead and shattered. All investiture, and matter and energy are just other forms of invesiture, was assigned to one of the shards. So all 16 shards are woven through reality and are on each planet, even if their finite minds are incapable of controlling the part of themselves on other planets. So I would suspect every person is connected to each shard. The degree of connection can vary though, and that's probably affect by how well your Intent matches, and how close you are to the shard, if its on your planet etc. Kelsier is far more destructive then preserving.

First question: Aside from a few old ones that would be in the Stormlight board, most(maybe all) Odium's Champion discussions will be in the OB spoiler board, and full of spoilers. Second question: Hoid is accessing the spiritual quality/property known as Fortune, which can be used to gain certain knowledge about the future, and maybe bend luck in your favor. The details about how Fortune works are sketchy at best, and the ability seems only partially reliable. Hoid can sometimes tell he needs to be somewhere and when, but may not necessarily know why. This is why he keeps showing up when important things are going down. How Hoid is accessing Fortune is currently unknown.

I suspect it would detect active awakening, but would not detect breaths on a person, and possibly even breaths sitting in an item with no command. My reasoning for this is that bronze is never noted to detect stored Feruchemy charges, or hemalurgic spikes. Of course, I don't recall it ever being noted to detect active Feruchemy tapping either. Whether that is because feruchemy is too quiet to detect, or it just never came up is a different question. Oathbringer Spoiler: tl-dr: We won't know in till Brandon tells or shows us.

I can see the conflict of interest, although I don't think it would warrant an attack by Cultivation. The original agreement was to split up the shards, and if they were bound to interfere with one another by Intent, they'd probably have come together long ago. Harmony might not be cultivating them to their max potential, but he does allow some growth, so he's not commpletely at odds with her, unlike Preservation and Ruin, where every action was the opposite of what the other wanted. Brandon confirmed another Shard is at work here, and one that we have seen before. So other mystery anti-Adon entities are a no go.

Why for? She seemed content to ignore everyone else and run off with Honor.

I agree that interfering with Scadrial would not be against Cultivation's Intent, but I think she is still not an option, she's tangled up on Roshar and doesn't have any known reason to move against Harmony.

@hwiles Harmony confirmed he does not know the origin of the metal. Harmony was able to retrieve all of Ruin's power, and does not have any splinters. There's also another WoB that states he is having to balance out his extra Ruin, but I can't find it at the moment. So the spike definitely came from another Shard, the only options being Autonomy and Odium, and if you notice Paalm is constantly talking about freeing people from god's control, aka giving them autonomy. That would actually (probably) make the compounding slower. It would be more effective to store youth, burn a little for alot of youth, store that, then burn more for even more youth. In the case of duralumin, it would burn the entire metal, so you'd miss out on the middle steps that would produce greater and greater amounts of youth. Short term gain, but you'd loose out in the long run with less efficient compounding. Unless you filled the nugget up to the max it could hold, then you could just burn it all at once since you can't put anymore in there anyways. Plus, channeling that massive spike of youth into a metalmind might be difficult mentally. (sidenote: question Brandon about tapping more youth than you have age, would it send you to being a baby or even earlier?). I think the easiest way to circumvent the mentioned problems would be larger metalminds. You'd still run into issues eventually, but its more of a theory problem for tomorrow(thousands of years tomorrow) than a realistic one.
-
@Calderis 1000 years was a safe estimate based on the Lord Ruler's age. But I agree, the actual number of years the Lord Ruler could reliably reach would be in the thousands, maybe tens of thousands, possibly quite a bit further. And supply of burnable atium probably wouldn't even be his big issue. The big things he would have to deal with would be creating atium metalminds large enough to hold the charges(maybe, the rules on attribute density inside of metalsminds seems kinda fuzzy), and how much time he would have to spend on storing age. At 1000 years he still appeared to have to take some time ever 3 days to store age. I'm now picturing the Lord Ruler in a suit of armor made of Atium, immortality achieved.
-
To clarify, Atium compounding works by tapping youth to return to your desired age. But the effect is temporary, and your soul remembers your real age. Once you stop tapping, you revert back to your correct age. The older you get, the more youth you have to tap. The more youth you have to tap, the more atium you have to be burning. That last part is what would kill you, eventually you reach a point where you would quickly burn though your atium reserves. The Lord Ruler would have run out of atium at some point, burning more then what the pits could produce. But the method is still viable for at least a thousand years and probably more. But if Ruin can form connections similar to Honor and his heralds, then Ruin could have supplied infinite amounts of Atium to his inquisitors. So either way, keeping his inquisitors alive for attacking other planets is a valid theory.
