[OB] Could Stormform grant (skybreaker style) Division?
Kered replied to Ymawgat's topic in Stormlight Archive
When I read about Division and when Nale brought it up to Szeth my initial thought was that the Division surge could be used to "divide" other Surgebinders surges. Essentially cancelling them out. But I like this idea a lot more and it makes a lot more sense than my idea lol. -
I totally forgot about this. I can't wait for interactions with Lopen's spren and Syl. I agree. When she tells Dalinar that she doesn't trust him because of his butt, I lost all control.

What makes a good name for me is one that pops of the page in terms of implications and power. Bavadin. Makes me think of someone sinister. Pretty much all of the Unmade names with Sja-anat and Moelach being my favorites. If you had absolute no context and have never read any fantasy books I think you'd still be able to read the name of every Unmade and know they're evil. Which is a testament to Brandon. Tanavast. Feels like a wise old elders name to me. Sylphrena. In my opinion it's the most elegant sounding name in the cosmere. Rayse, again you could read this with no context and know he's evil, with the relationship with the word "raze" and all. Favorite over all would have to Jezrien.

I was trying to find the old topic like this and couldn't find it. So instead I made this so I didn't have to necro. Plus, with OB out everyone probably has some new favorites(no OB spoilers). With that being said, which side characters are your favorite? For the sake of the topic, I think main characters as characters with the a lot of POV's in their respective stories. With the exception of some of the SA Interlude characters. Mine Kiin's children. Kaise is by far and away my favorite side character so far in the cosmere. All of her dialogue was awesomely and hilarious to read. I really hope to see more of her in the Elantris. My pipe dream is that she eventually becomes a worldhopper Lopen. Goes without saying. I know he's mostly there for comic relief, but he's still a great and unique character. Steris. I honestly don't understand why a lot of people don't like Steris. She knows she's different and she's found out a way to work with it. I think she's a great compliment to a character like Wax.

I usually see Jasnah described this way. But I mostly agree. When she first starts interacting with Dalinar it was lightly hinted that she couldn't be trusted. We've learned diferently since then, but I could never shake the feeling that there's more than meets the eye with Navani, and it's most likely bad. Also, I don't like how her first instinct is to bully people. But, there is a few things that I do like about her. The first thing is that she doesn't care at all about social propriety, and only does when it suits her. The other is that I enjoy reading the parts where she goes full engineer, just as I like when Shallan goes full artist. -
How would the Shards we know of act with different Vessels?
Kered replied to Etruscan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This could be a double-edged sword. The fact that they were once friends could mean that Hoid is bias when talking about how dangerous Rayse can be. But with Odium's first conversation with Dalinar and Odium basically saying that he wants to be the only god/ruler, it kind of vindicates Hoid's opinion. -
From the scant clues we've gotten it makes sense. I don't think we know enough to fully commit to it, but like you said it's likely that Uli Da is not human or dragon sounding name compared to other shard vessels/names we've seen. Personally, Uli Da sounds like a nomadic tribe style name in my mind. From the chapters we've seen of the Sho Del(i know it's not canon) the name kinda fits.

DON'T TAKE THE CO- I mean, welcome to the Shard!

Like Elephant said, I think it's just the whole concept of Moelach and his powers of foresight. I don't think the rattles are damaging in the physical sense, but I think the rattles heard are ultimately chosen by Odium or one of his generals. Which means the rattles are an attempt to either a.) Manipulate various events and people or b.) Just to cause plain ole chaos as people try to decipher the meaning behind the rattles. At the least it's a distraction, at the worst Odium is manipulating events to fit his agenda.

I'm going Oathbringer. OB had so many scenes that I had to go back and instantly re-read because I was like "Wait. Did that just happen?". Not to mention I think there were some of the best scenes Brandon has ever written in this book. No book is without it's faults, but I think OB had fewer than WoK or WoR. This book by far had the most emotional scenes out of any cosmere book. The entire Moash salute to Kaladin scene will go down as my favorite emotional Sanderson scene for a very, very long time. The buildup, execution and climax of that scene was just excellent. It is wonderful when an author can make you feel an emotion so completely, and during this scene I just felt hopeless lol. Taln's conversation with Ash. That one felt like a punch right to the gut. Taln y u so nice. Elhokar. Nuff said. The Jasnah/Renarin confrontation at the end. Turns out Jasnah does have a little piece of a heart. Pretty much all of Szeth's scenes. He just needs a hug already. In my opinion this book had the best/emotional/informative flashback sequence of the three SA novels. Dalinar is by far the most changed character of the three in terms of what they used to be like. Not to mention the events and aftermath of The Rift. Ouch. I also totally teared up during the scene when Renarin hugged Dalinar. Right in the feels. It had the most cosmere knowledge bombs, and those bombs were executed masterfully. Finally seeing Odium, and him being the villain we all hoped for. Seeing Cultivation and her plans outwitting Odium. An entire Part in Shadesmar. Worldhoppers galore. The best climax in any Sanderson book so far. I felt like I was running a marathon that was taking place on a roller coaster. This book was also one of the more darker of the books we've seen so far and it was done in a very good way. In WoR and WoK the story starts somewhat depressing, then has some ups and downs but for the most part maintains the "things are going to get better" feel. Not so much in this book. In OB you get the sense and feel that the characters are finally starting to realize the burdens that have been placed on their shoulders in their entirety as well as everything and everyone their responsible for. During the entire book, even after the climax, there was a vibe that even though some good things are happening there is still a huge shadow on the horizon and people are just starting to realize the scope of that shadow. Lastly, just so much good information. More about the KR Orders The Recreance Unmade Voidbinding Diagram Nightwatcher Dalinar's boon and curse Evi The complexity of the Voidbringer situation Honor Epigraphs(my favorite thus far) OB was a 9 out of 10 for me. The only thing stopping it from being a 10/10 are the interludes. Other than the Amia interlude, I felt the others weren't up to par with the other books. I also didn't like Venli's arc compared to Eshonai's and Szeth's.

Same thing as Toaster said about Lift. I think sometimes she's a bit over the top goofy, and in my opinion this was prevalent in her most recent appearance. I get that it's a defense mechanism, she just needs to dial it back sometimes. Shallan. Sorry. It's hard for me to read her POV's when I'm more irritated than interested. Vivenna. I've done 2 re-reads of Warbreaker and I found myself just skimming her chapters. It's not that she was a badly written character, it was more of the fact that her inner turmoil was tedious to me. Moash. For me I never saw him as a friend to Kaladin. Through his dialogue it just seems like he's using Bridge Four to meet his own ends. He was always going against and talking back to Kaladin. But it's stated that Kaladin was closest to Moash out of everyone in Bridge Four because Moash didn't treat Kaladin differently. I never saw it, I just saw Moash being a brat. -
Another thing in Kaladin's favor is that it's essentially a 2 on 1 fight since Kal has Syl. With that I think it be fairly easy for Syl to find Percy's "weak spot". But I think Kaladin's biggest advantage was already said. He's a killer. From the start of the fight he'd be out to kill and win the fight while Percy would be initially trying to rationalize killing a human.

I finally got time to look at all the recent WoB's from OB signings and I came across two that might have a bit more importance than others. *Note: Both WoB's are still pending review, but I've listened to the audio and they're pretty spot on. Now obviously they don't relate to each other in terms of the question, but they do relate in terms of Brandon's answers. To my knowledge this is only like the second time he has put such big emphasis on a RAFO answer. A lot of emphasis lol. So I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on what the answers to the questions might be. Brandon's answers to them make me feel like they're going to be significant sometime in the future in terms of central plot. First WoB Honestly, I have no idea. I've looked through Coppermind and did a skim through the eBook versions of cosmere novels, and I couldn't find any references. The random idea I got was that it may be used to bind something with a ton of investiture. A Shard or Herald maybe. I only think that because it doesn't specifically stay steel chain, in the text it says "a long silvery chain" which I took to mean either actual silver or aluminum. If it's either, then it could be used to bind something. Since it's a "Super big RAFO" it's safe to say we'll be seeing it play a role in the books to come. Possibly used to separate Rayse from Odium without killing Rayse? Second WoB I think this one is a bit easier to speculate on. To me this is just a tid bit that we'll be seeing SA characters(not necessarily Shallan) worldhop in the future. Possibly returning to the humans original home world, possibly Ashyn, maybe traveling to Braize, or they could go to other Shardworlds seeking help to defeat Odium(Scadrial?)

I'm guessing you won't be the only one.

My mental image of what a Shin looks like will be logic defying, then.

So perfect that I think the character designers of the movie may in fact be Sanderson fans.

[OB] I Hate Moash for Giving the Bridge Four Salute
Kered replied to NotBurtReynolds's topic in Stormlight Archive
When I read it, I just said "Well, Sh**", and closed my eyes for a second. To me it was arguably one of the better scenes Brandon has ever written, giving credence to this fact is this topic and everyone's varying assumed implications of the salute. To me the whole thing was the most emotional scene that I've read in any of Brandon's books. Kaladin being helpless and failing to prevent the deaths of two groups of friends, him watching a man he didn't respect about to become a KR, and then Moash just coming up and brutally ending the man he told Dalinar he'd protect. Then the cherry-on-top effect of the salute, it was the perfect climax in my mind, no matter if you hate it or love it. As for the salute itself, I don't think Moash did it to harm or disrespect Kaladin. In most all of Moash's POV's, he thinks of Kaladin is a postive'ish light, and regrets how things turned out. Not necessarily the assassination attempt, but losing Kaladin as a friend. I think the salute was a way of Moash telling Kaladin that even though he did this "evil" thing, he remembers Bridge Four, and all the things Kaladin and the guys did for him. I think it's a sign that eventually we'll see a path of redemption for Moash. -
[OB] Who do you think the other Bondsmiths will be?
Kered replied to teknopathetic's topic in Stormlight Archive
I thought Gawx might be a good choice as a Bondsmith, but maybe a bit far fetched. Him coming into his own as Prime and ruling one of the larger nations on Roshar could make him a candidate to bond the Sibling. I think it'd be an interesting arc. I've had the thought in the back of my head ever since I read that Syl use to be bonded to a Radiant, but the Radiant died. The 2nd or 3rd Bondsmith could be a current KR who's spren dies in battle with Odium, then they go on a path of redemption using their experience to become a Bondsmith. Definitely a tin foil hat theory, though. Playing into the "Radiant from another order becoming a Bondsmith" bit, I think Taln may be in consideration to be a good candidate to be a Bondsmith. With Brandon's tid bits about "The man who calls himself the Herald Taln" it could be assumed that he's an entirely different person after 4,500 years of torture. Or at the least his spirit web has been "scrubbed clean". I think Taln as a Bondsmith and being a real leader among the Roshar forces would make for an excellent turn of events. EDIT: Those are all ideas on who might bond the Sibling. I haven't the slightest who is going to bond the Nightwatcher if she even is a Bondsmith spren. I think Navani is going to die, so I don't see her as a candidate. I don't think Fen either, because I think there need's to be a great "normal" leader in the series. Someone who is the typical excellent ruler without the aid of spren or surges. -
Welcome to the Shard, look forward to seeing you around.

I'll edit this once I get home and think about this more. Off the cuff: Navani dies from Ialai, but it looks like someone else did. This causes Dalinar to become the Blackthorn in full once again and restarts he progress swearing the Fourth Ideal. We'll find out how shardplate is made. Szeth kills Nale on Dalinars(the Blackthron) orders. Rock or Skar become a full Radiant. Rlain becomes a full Skybreaker. Veni becomes a Willshaper and switches sides, becoming a spy for the KR. Kelek will appear on screen again and might have an encounter with Venli, being that she's in his order. Also because it'll be Eshonai's book and she was on the path to be a Willshaper. Nightblood gets drawn in a highstorm/everstorm(storms I hope this happens). A huge cosmere cameo. Either Kelsier, Harmony or Khriss. They get the fabrial in Urithiru to work and thus awake the Sibiling. Cultivation makes an on-screen appearance in the present for the first time. Jasnah begins the plan to kill the Heralds behind Dalinar's and the others back. Some important viewpoint character will discover the Diagram. The war starts in earnest and full-scale battles start happening all around Roshar. Adolin reawakens Mara, but doesn't form a nahel bond. Teft, Skar, Rock or Sigzil are going to die while Kaladin is trying to protect someone, most likely a lighteyes.
-
They've already probably been said. Lopen swearing the Second Ideal on accident. I laughed then snorted out loud in the middle of a crowded Starbucks. Lopen caressing the ground, trying to fly. Pretty much all of the witty banter from Syl. Of course, Pattern's lines in Part 1. Again laughed out loud in the same Starbucks. They'll have me committed any day now. Kaladin making fun of how Adolin dresses. Jasnah's savage burn to Amaram. I let out an involuntary "You go girl" and woke up my fiance.

My take on that last bit you put in bold stuck me as very ominous when I read it for the first time. "we must not let either side gain dominance yet" almost like they're preparing the landscape for something. Something bad, possibly worse than Odium as he's on one of the sides Mraize mentions. Only thing that makes me doubt it is the apparent odd coincidence of Odium's vessels name Rayse being similar to Mraize. Prepping the world with what they perceive as ideal conditions for some bigger baddie could be their motive. Collecting investiture to research the cosmere's various "defenses". Game of Thrones Dance with Dragons spoiler? Mraize and the Ghostbloods good be doing the same thing, just on a larger scale that encompasses multiple planets in the cosmere. Just my personal vibe on the context.

Welcome to the Shard, look forward to seeing you a around. A piece of advice, tread carefully around the Arcanists. They tend to make people disappear and leave nothing behind except gummy bears and inaudible WoB's.
