[OB] Moash vs Kaladin and why they choose differently
Nymeros replied to Jenet's topic in Stormlight Archive
I can understand the themes that Sanderson wanted to explore with Moash. ...I just found it odd that his story was a play on Kaladins. The 2 are just incredibly different and I cannot imagine either becoming or behaving as the other would. Theyre even influenced by magical nonsense to boot. Of course different people make different choices. When pushed to the brink, Moash, lacking any sort of support system, is dragged further down by Odium. Kaladin when pushed to the brink attempts to free himself from pain by killing himself but is pulled back by Syl's influence. So from this we learn that it's better to have a good fairy guiding you rather than an evil god corrupting you.......alright. -
[OB] Moash vs Kaladin and why they choose differently
Nymeros replied to Jenet's topic in Stormlight Archive
That doesn't seem to be the case really. Kaladin had a stable home and family life when he was young. He received an excellent education and had an awesome roll model in the form of his father who taught him the value of healing, saving lives, and service. On the flip side, Moashs parents died and he spent his youth running with mercenaries and traveling over Alethkar with caravans. Hrmmm, Odium didn't prepare him but the Alethi society did. He wasn't born evil....he was just broken by his hopelessness at being able to affect change or find justice, his God awful luck. Yeah, but I'm not sure why. Moash's story in this book is a super condensed version of Kaladins story in Way Of Kings..... -No hope to return home -Kills an extraordinarily empowered foe but loses his comrades and winds up alone -Is made a slave and put to work -Protects and trains a group of his fellow slaves It seems like such pointless parallels.... -
I.....greatly dislike this reveal. He isn't really "Odium" He is "Passion" but called Odium because it sounds cooler?
-
The hell? Odium is Shard of emotions? ........What?

So Moash was the character I was most interested in reading of in Oathbringer and his chapters were the first I've read in the book. .....it wasn't what was expecting, and really they left me more confused than excited. He started off like a boss, taking down a Fused and showing why he was Kaladin best man but then, well..... how could someone a competent, rational, and intelligent as Moash work towards the destruction of his own species? Why would he willingly aid the Voidbringers? I was expecting a Radiant and instead I got a sombre Uncle Ruckus. The only way that I could half understand his logic was to apply what I understood of racism and how criminality, deviance, hopelessness, and self hatred could result from the pressures of systemic racism. So, some questions: why is he becoming so emotionless? Truly, I don't understand his muted reaction to the world. The voidbringers describe his as a man of passion but....why? He's generally cold but for a few moments of rage and violence. What's with the crazy laughing fit when he reached the lumberyard? Is the voice in his head telling him that he did nothing wrong his voice or Odium's? Is there any hope for redemption or greater self realization for my boy? Please help me to understand

After checking, it looks like you're right. I just read Kaladin thought concerning Shallan lending him Pattern during the chasmfiend fight.
-
Yes, we know it requires concious effort and focus to maintain the blade in the physical realm while it's away from your body. Also i didn't care for Venli at all in Words of Radiance but her chapter here was better than all of Eahonais interludes (not the prologue mind you) combined. She is yet another scholar yes, but she's far more compelling than Eshonai imo.
-
Well mine still has to ship and arrive so, yeah....... Imma miss the first round of discussions as I will need to avoid the shard so as to avoid spoilers...nevertheless, I shall return! If I'm here tomorrow, I stumbled upon some money and bought the EBook version as well (unlikely unfortunately).
-
I'm lost as to how her blade would still be in the ground if she is still alive....last I checked that only happened if the bearer was dead or willing it not to vanish. I feel like people are in denial here. Sanderson admitted he screwed up with Jasnahs death but he is going to do the same thing in the very next book? I don't think so. Eshonai was a boss I know, taking on a stormwall with nothing but a shield for protection. Surviving being thrown into a chasm and an everstorm and highstorm crashing together in her head only to drawn in the ensuing floods. We will see again though....in flashbacks.
-
Take my upvote you wizard
-
Eshonai flashbacks would be perfect for a book dealing with the humans struggling to forge a partnership with the Listeners or a book with a heavy focus on exploration or discovery. It would allow Venli (who is way more compelling) a flashback sequence by association.
-
It wouldn't be a lie. He straight up said he would do a flashback sequence for a character even if the character is dead.
-
Well Syl hardly screams honor and nobility..... According to google, Redemption is the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or clearing a debt. So Ulim as a spren of redemption (if that is what he literally is) takes the form of a shifty middleman.....seems legit.
-
I believe that the back cover for the book refers to Venli.... Thia fits Venli far more than it does Eshonai. She would be the person broken by ambition and seeking freedom.....just one more nail in Eshonai's coffin I suppose. The Sleepless aren't even concerned with her.

Oh boy......have you guys listened to the 3rd Interlude? The traitor isn't who we think it is. If you haven't listened: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/62298-ob-interlude-3/
-
Her spren and then making itself visible to someone other than Eshonai leads most to believe Venli may become radiant more than anything. That and it's loyal and mourning.
-
The part where her corpse was looted and left in the ditch or...?
-
........at least she'll get a flashback sequence bro....she was more interesting as a young explorer than as a war leader any way. At least this explains why Brandon didn't invest a lot of effort into fleshing out her struggles with leadership.....she was just a red (and black) herring.
-
........I was wondering who this could be but never thought it was Eshonai. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Eshonai it would seem will never be radiant and she is one of the characters who will have a flashback sequence while dead. And this after providing an awesome prologue. Redemption spren? Taking the form or red lightning? Wow. ................ Good chapter....I've listened 3 times already.

Look, War for the Planet of the Apes blew my mind. If they can turn a cast into a bunch of apes, they can make these actors fit the fantasy races of Roshar.

[OB] Tor "spolier free" beta reader review not spoiler free
Nymeros replied to PunSpren's topic in Stormlight Archive
HYPE I understand what Tor was doing and it worked. This just made me even more pumped. Apparently this is a pretty heavy book. -
Really good answers. My book was pre ordered whenever so its really just a patience game frome here....i know I'm going to enjoy it regardless. Specifically, I'm ready to see Bridge 4 get an extended section and to see what Moash is up to.

Thank you. i dont think humans moved to Rosharof their own power so I do wonder what the heck Adonalsium had planned for Roshar..... To answer the OP, no, immigrants aren't evil simply because the have a dispute with the initial inhabitants of the area.

Reference?
-
Yup. Syl just has more holes in her memory that need to be filled. I like the theory that Syl wasn't bonded during the recreance because her partner was killed prior to the reference. @Beatsmorn - It's a theory....the Voidbringers should have something to counter shardblades since they already have janky surges and voidlight. -Brandon was the person who defined Resonances....what are you referring to?
