@Who Sharded? Did you make it to the university section in book one? I was unimpressed until he got there, but upon arrival it really picked up for me and I started to enjoy it (except for the draccus scene towards the end).

I liked it, but not as much as others seem to. I recommend experiencing the series through the audiobook. The narrator is amazing and helped me get through the slower parts.

I thought the first four were good. The 5th and 6th were as well, but cracks start to show, 7-10 are imo awful (I gave up partway througg the 10th and read summaries for the rest). I hear the Sanderson books (12-14) are better. A lot of people like them so I recommend reading them until you feel like its a chore (you might even finish it and love it). I eventually got to a point were I started hating some of the characters, and got frustrated the plot moved at the speed of a glacier. Its frustrating for me bc this series had so much potential, but it just fizzled out.

It has, but this is a new way to get it in print. Also I'm sure there are some Sanderson fans like me that have never heard of Firstborn and wanted to draw attention to it. Even though it's a new book this a old story. I think it's hard to get in print so if you are waiting for a cheap way to get it in print with what appears to be some other great stories then this is worth a look.

Apologies if this is old news, but a new anthology is coming out this month called Galactic Empires (edited by Neil Clarke) and it includes the Brandon Sanderson short story Firstborn. Evidently Firstborn can be purchased elsewhere (99 cent) on kindle. I mention this news because I had never heard of Firstborn before and it might be of interest to someone here. Here is the table of contents for the collection if anyone is interested: Table of Contents: - “Winning Peace” by Paul J. McAuley - “Night’s Slow Poison” by Ann Leckie - “All the Painted Stars” by Gwendolyn Clare - “Firstborn” by Brandon Sanderson - “Riding the Crocodile” by Greg Egan - “The Lost Princess Man” by John Barnes - “The Waiting Stars” by Aliette de Bodard - “Alien Archeology” by Neal Asher - “The Muse of Empires Lost” by Paul Berger - “Ghostweight” by Yoon Ha Lee - “A Cold Heart” by Tobias S. Buckell - “The Colonel Returns to the Stars” by Robert Silverberg - “The Impossibles” by Kristine Kathryn Rusch - “Utriusque Cosmi” by Robert Charles Wilson - “Section Seven” by John G. Hemry - “The Invisible Empire of Ascending Light” by Ken Scholes - “The Man with the Golden Balloon” by Robert Reed - “Looking Through Lace” by Ruth Nestvold - “A Letter from the Emperor” by Steve Rasnic Tem - “The Wayfarer’s Advice” by Melinda M. Snodgrass - “Seven Years from Home” by Naomi Novik - “Verthandi’s Ring” by Ian McDonald Edit: Just saw a link in one of the above threads for the 17th Shard threads. Firstborn can be obtained for free here: http://www.tor.com/2008/12/17/firstborn/

I have several. Cool Ranch/Spicy Nacho Doritoes. I also really like Kraze beef jerkey. Kraze is the brand name and they have lots of flavors; I don't know if its a colorado thing or its sold elsewhere. I also really like Halo Top Ice cream. It tastes absolutely delicious and its high protein/low calorie (about 300 cal for a entire pint).

As much as I love the way he writes, the plots of his books (outside of the trilogy we have been discussing) do not interest me. If you read one, and love it, I might have to give it a try...the City of Stairs trilogy is a pretty big departure from his other books.

Sometimes people reply to the post as you are typing and that creates confusion. I'm sure most people could figure it out, but another benefit is that the website gives the quoted person a notification so a dialogue can happen (sometimes things get lost in the recent news feed and one doesn't know a person replied to their comment).

I have and loved it! City of Blades is also very good (still give the edge to the first one though). I've already preordered the concluding book, City of Miracles, which I think comes out in May.

It's official...I am now a Daniel Abraham junkie! I just finished The Dragon's Path and Leviathan Wakes and currently reading The King's blood. I love everything I have read by him so far and am kicking myself for not discovering him earlier.

Pondering State of Sanderson 2016
Ammanas replied to The Quiet One's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Agree with the above comment. Also the more popular a author is the more time the publishers expect for him to be on tour and do public appearances. I think that Brandons work output will decline. I still think, at the very least, we will receive one book a year from him from some series. This is not a complaint (Brandon has been very good to his fans) but as Logan 9 fingers would say, "You have to be realistic about these things." -
Found this from a Daniel Abraham reddit done earlier this year: I've got three more Expanse novels up first. We'll be finishing that story in book 9. Beyond that, I've got a crime novel I'm thinking about, a cosmic horror novel, and a couple weird contemporary fantasy things that might be fun. The thing I'd really like to play with for a while are stand-alone novels. Almost everything I've done has been a series. Tightening up the focus could be really interesting.

Someone in the westeros forum mentioned that Daniel Abraham stated he is done with fantasy. I don't know what this info is based upon though. I do know that there are three more expanse books plus a expanse short story collection. Sorry, I realize this is not a helpful answer.

If you have ever been curious how Sanderson's book sales compare with other authors then this is for you: http://thewertzone.blogspot.co.uk/2016/12/the-sff-all-time-sales-list.html?m=1

I'm usually not that obnoxious guy correcting people's grammar (I'm far from a master of the english language), but this bugs me. What you mean is, "Don't accept cookies". Sorry I'm slightly OCD about certain things.

Empire Strikes Back. Favorite time travel book/movie? -
I see what you did there! I disagree with the assessment, but well played!

I bet you love Twerking!

I know I'm not the most observant guy, also probably in the minority, but I didn't notice any problems with Tarkin. I know some think its a big deal and looks fake, but he looked real to me.

I saw it today and liked it. Much more than Force Awakens (which as basically ep. 4 A New Hope, but with better graphics). I'm still confused how the stormtroopers, who were cloned from one of the best mercenaries in the galaxy (Jango Fett) can be so incompetent and inaccurate, but thats a discussion for another day. I'm happy Disney decided to end it with everyone dying rather than another implausible escape. I'm also happy we get a explanation for the Death Stars fatal flaw...that has bugged me ever since I saw ep. 4.

Pondering State of Sanderson 2016
Ammanas replied to The Quiet One's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Maybe someone here can answer my questions. Did Brandon envision Stormlight Archive to be 10 massive doorstopers from the beginning? Did writing the WoT series inspire him to change his original plans and make each one longer? I can't remember, but I think he said the first one would be the biggest and the rest would be much shorter, but I can't remember where I read this...this is not a complaint; I'm just curious. -
Pondering State of Sanderson 2016

"Dragonsteel This story (the story of the shattering of Adonalsium, as told by Hoid) is next-to-last in my sequence of cosmere novels (though it’s first chronologically). So don’t expect it until Stormlight 10 is done.Status: A long way off. Though it might still beat that one book by that other author." So is referencing George R.R. Martin or Rothfuss? Its funny either way! -

I'm a school bus driver and just got to the high school, parked, and noticed it smelled like gasoline. I noticed a long trail following the bus and discovered a fuel line had burst in the engine. I had to wait in 15 degree weather with a bunch of grumpy high schoolers while a new bus arrived. The new one arrived, I think it was built in the 1960's, and it gave a violent lurch, every time, shifting between 2nd and third gear...it was terrifying. On the brightside nobody was hurt and a few more days until Christmas break. -
Found this on one of the blogger sites I follow. Evidently there is a company that takes 2D maps and puts them on a globe. The Cosmere possibilities are obvious. The blogger provided some examples from other big fantasy series. I am not associated with the company...I just think its a cool idea. If this violates a advertising rule feel free to take it down @Chaos http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2016/12/visit-westeros-malazan-world-and.html?m=1
