Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Ammanas replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
Since you want advice. I will give you mine; which is a little different. I will probably be downvoted for it. You embarrassed him and he reacted poorly. You should of said, "I'm sorry I have mistaken you for someone else. My apoligies." Instead you made him feel worthless. He reacted poorly...most young people don't handle things well. Just drop it. He seems like he craves your attention and you are giving it to him. No need to demand a apology and blow everything up and make it a huge deal. That seems to be what he wants. Perhaps there is more to this situation that meets the eye, but thats my 2 cents. -
Its not surprising that there are so many Mormons on the shard. Forgive me for stereotyping, but I believe I have the right to: Mormons love to read, feel uncomfortable with sex scenes in entertainment, they are fascinated with Mormons that are famous, and the cosmere is just clean fun. There are so many great fantasy series that I cannot get others to read in my church bc it has one brief sex scene. Its hard to find high quality, non-YA books that meet that criteria...I actually surprised Riftwar isnt more popular come to think about it

I have read all of the shadow campaign series that is out and can vouch for the series. I actually enjoyed it more than powder mage.

@StormingTexan I just thought of this. You could do audiobooks, but review the chapter later using the Tor Reread which provides a summary and analysis on every chapter. That would work i think http://www.tor.com/series/malazan-reread-of-the-fallen/

I think so. Its a series that requires a lot of flipping back, rereading parts etc. I cannot imagine listening to audiobooks my first time through. Although maybe you have a different learning style than me? Or perhaps you are smarter? That's just my 2 cents.

@AngelEy3 There is, but Esslemont books are divisive amongst some malazan fans. Personally I am not a fan of them (except his new prequel trilogy). I recommend reading all of Eriksons books first and then seeing if Esslemont is to your tastes. Other Malazan fan might tell you differently though...thats just my opinion.

Finished City of Miracles the final book in Bennetts trilogy. Its been getting really positive reviews, but I feel it fell short of the high standard the previous two books set. Here are my reasons:
-
You will find out why it is called Malazan Book of the fallen at the end of book 10 The Crippled God the answer is immensely rewarding and would involve getting to know a character you don't know yet, but has been mentioned briefly...so don't spoil yourself. Duiker is important at the end, but not in regards to why its called The Book of the Fallen.
-
Nice! The next one, Memories of Ice, is most fans favorite; although its my personal third (behind Midnight Tides and The Bonehunters). Also, in regards to your other question, I just try not to think about it. There are many series I am following and favorites to reread; If after five years or so and another is released I will reread the previous one, to refresh my memory, and enjoy the book for what it is.

Sounds like you should get off the 17th shard and get working on your homework -
So this thread is dedicated to books that make you laugh. For me that story is Kings of the Wyld by Eames. It came out earlier this year and I was reading it while going through a really stressful time; it helped me get through it. I think the humor in it works for everyone. What's your favorite? I imagine that I will get some Discworld answers...

The translator Ken Liu wrote a book (Grace of Kings) that I thought was fantastic. It's not for everyone, but it pushed all the right buttons for me. The sequel Wall of Storms is almost as good.
-
I didnt want to start a new thread on the Recreance so I though I would hijack this one...apologies. Anyways my question is when do you think we will get the full story of the recreance and the reasoning behind it? Possibly book 3 or is this a card Brandon will hold untill book 10. Has anyone asked this in a WoB yet?

One of the things you found was the Tiste Edur references isn't it? Blew my mind on my reread too!

I should finish up the Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham tomorrow. I have been enjoying it but not as much as The Expanse or Dagger and Coin. If his name wasn't on the cover I honestly would of thought a different author wrote this series; the language is more flowery and the books are more of a character study (rather than the fast paced other series he has written). It took almost the entire first book to get into, but I am glad I stuck with it. I think I need something light after this series... I think I will reread one of my all-time favorites Magician Apprentice and Master by Feist; its been a few years.

I have a question and thought this thread would do to ask. First some background: I don't mind violence so much, but torture makes me feel uncomfortable. I can deal with one or two sex scenes in a book, but any more than that and it's just too much. I also enjoy Joe Abercrombies books if that is any indicator of my tastes. Finally my question: I am intrigued by Bakkers Prince of Nothing series but, knowing my preferences, is this a series that I should avoid? I hear that it is graphic...

@AngelEy3 The tor reread has been very valuable for me in understanding the series. Just stay away from the comment section if you don't want to be spoiled (although there are some helpful posts in there); the rest of it is safe. http://www.tor.com/series/malazan-reread-of-the-fallen/

@Briar King@StormyQueen I read the first Fitz book a few years ago and thought it was ok, but didn't feel inspired to continue. I was wondering if the first one is a good representation of the entire series or if it gets a lot better? I am wondering if I missed out...
-
It doesn't say anything. The original 10 malazan books might be my all-time favorite series. That being said, when people ask for fantasy book recommendations I place it pretty far down the line. It is a difficult series to get into and many people I know of have given up on the first book and throw their hands up in defeat. I only recommend it to people that have read many of the more popular series and looking for something different and challenging.

I'm reading the Long Price Quartet by Abraham right now. It is very different than his other series (Dagger and Coin and Expanse). It reminds me a lot of GGK, but works for me and I am enjoying it. It would be worth your time to check out sometime.
-
GGK is one of those authors that many seem to adore, but I just can't get into any of his books. I have tried Tigana, the Finovar Tapestry, and the Lions of Al Rassan (I'm sure the sp is off on these titles). I have not finished any of them.
-
Just finished both of Kel Kades books. I feel like I enjoyed these way more than I should have. The main character is a unstoppable juggernaut and every woman wants him and every man wants to be him. Most of the books consist of characters complimenting Rezkin. I don't care though. The narrator was fantastic and it was just a really fun story. Can't wait for book 3.
-
Best Served Cold is definitely his darkest book. The Heroes might be my favorite Abercrombie book and Red Country actually has a happy ending...or at least as happy as Joe Abercrombie can get
-
You can read Lies of Locke Lamora as a standalone. Books two and three definitely not, but it is definitely worth your while to read the first. Best of luck with malazan. Very challenging and very rewarding. My advice is dont try to understand everything...somethings will only make sense several books later and upon rereads.
