One thing the 17th shard can do is feed the crazy! Nice to have you here!

So I just wanted to share some of my favorites portal fantasy books and anyone is welcome to add any of their favorites. I define portal fantasy as someone from the world we know crossing over to a completely different world through magical means. 1. A Different Kingdom, Riding the Unicorn, and The Way to Babylon by Paul Kearney. These three books are unrelated to one another, but are all excellent by one of the best, and most criminally under read authors out there. There are some adult situations and language so I would not recommend reading it to young kids. 2. Miserere by Teresa Frohock. I think the following article does a better job describing it than I ever could: https://www.tor.com/2013/11/21/under-the-radar-teresa-frohocks-miserere-an-autumn-tale/ 3. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Needs no introduction and I couldn't leave it off the list. 4. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Ok so technically they use technology to get to these amazing worlds, but I will use Clarke's third law as my excuse. Just a really fun book.

Mystery Project in Sanderson's Status Bar

Ah thank you @thegatorgirl00 and @StormingTexan that was very helpful. I saw the article but I guess for some reason I missed that part. Thanks again for the source! -
Mystery Project in Sanderson's Status Bar
Ammanas replied to Exalted's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I guess the reason why us simple folk can't get it through our heads is because I have never seen where he said that. I saw you mentioned it before, but did not provide a source. If you want people to "get that in their heads" you need to provide a source. Also I think many people would consider Mistborn era two young adult even if I am unsure that Brandon has made that leap. -
Mystery Project in Sanderson's Status Bar
Ammanas replied to Exalted's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Here is a idea I don't think I have seen in the previous responses: could it be Wax and Wayne 4, but he is calling it a mystery project so he doesn't take away any hype for Oathbringer? -
I read the books first so I have my own idea of what the original looks like. I do enjoy other interpretations though; the Number 2 Moriarty is a almost exact match to how I invision even though I prefer number one. Even though Jude Law is my favorite Watson I think of the one in the books as heavier and slower to process information (which is completely different from being dumb of course).

Saw the Tolkien post above and just wanted to say its funny that he is still publishing about one new book a year! The last one, which came out recently, was called: Beren and Lúthien.

I can see your profile picture fine right now (looks like a white mask on a black background). Hope that helps!

Wish Me Luck: For Sharders beginning something new
Ammanas replied to Jondesu's topic in General Discussion
I am in the process of starting something new. Five years ago we bought our house in the Denver metroplex for just over 160,000 dollars and that same house in now worth about $305,0000. Our goal is to sell and, with the equity we put in and minus closing and buying costs, to be able to buy a house outright near Omaha, Nebraska. We dont have family near there, but it is a lower cost of living, better schools and no house payments. I dont do anything real special for work so finding a job hepefully wont be too hard. We have decided on a realtor, visited the area we wish to move to and started the process of getting the house ready to hit the market in May of next year (assuming nothing crazy happens like a market crash). I really hate change, but feel that it is what's best for my family...its a bit scary. Lots of hope is going into this potential move. -
Thanks for your thoughts. I know it must of been difficult to write a review that doesn't spoil anything and yet communicates your feelings; I think you nailed it!

[OB] Tor Spoiler Free Oathbringer review
Ammanas replied to Blightsong's topic in Stormlight Archive
I was going to hold off on Oathbringer, but after reading this review I can feel my self control crumbling like the proverbial house of cards. -
For your first question we simply don't have enough information to understa5ns Shin motives. Originally Stormlight 3 was going to be Szeth's book (where he has the flashback chapters) and the title was going to be Stone Unhallowed. We would of gotten our answers about that then, but Brandon decided to push that book back. Who knows though? We still might get deeper insight into Shin culture in Oathbringer anyway.

I voted no, because its not quite good enough for me to spend my money in, but I did ask my wife to get it for me if she runs out of gift ideas. I will be receiving it at some point I'm sure.

So I am completely up to date on three different adaptions of Sherlock Holmes and wanted to share my thoughts on them and are interested on how other people view them. If you have any other adaptions you want to recommend then please do so. I think I have only seen these three but know there are many others. 1. Sherlock produced by BBC. This has my favorite Sherlock Holmes portrayal played by Cumberbatch. I think he nails the Sherlock from books where he switches from high energy to lethargy. He also has some great lines. One of my favorites is: Sherlock Holmes: Oh, John, I envy you so much. Dr. John Watson: You envy me? Sherlock Holmes: Your mind. it's so placid, straightforward, barely used. Mine's like an engine, racing out of control. A rocket, tearing itself to pieces, trapped on the launch pad. I also really like how they portrayed Moriarty balancing the playfulness, intelligence, and ruthlessness. Here are some examples: The one thing that I think is weak is the mysteries themselves; they just didn't appeal to me like other adaptions. 2. Sherlock Holmes Movies directed Guy Ritchie. I just love the Guy Ritchie style. Its hard to describe, but here is a example I think Robert Downey Jr. does a great job and Jude Law is my favorite Watson. I thought the 2nd movie relied too much on action scenes, but I loved the "trout" scene with Moriarty. Here it is: 3. Elementary Tv show. I really like the mysteries on this show the best. They try to mix it up by changing genders and ethnicities of various characters which is kind of cool. For me this show does a solid job in all areas even if they don't excel in them.

Fall Daylight Savings is like Christmas for adults. A extra hour of sleep! Unless you work a night shift (like I used to a few years ago). Then it is awful.

@MasterJackGame of Thrones has a lot of sex in it so it might not be a series for you. Wheel of Time, if memory serves, has some implied stuff but nothing graphic. The first three Dune books were clean I think but can't say about the others.
-
@AngelEy3 Ah thanks, but I'm bound to suggest a book you dont like eventually! Also if you like Glen Cook you could be busy for a long time; The man has published about 51 books or so. Most are winners!
-
I think the ending is fitting and complete, but Glen Cook is planning on a epilogue to the series called A Pittiless Rain. It's supposed to be the next thing he writes after Port of Shadows (a prequel Black Company book set during the original trilogy and supposedly coming out next year)

So wait... Was apocalypse guard dropped or not?
Ammanas replied to Snipexe's topic in General Brandon Discussion
There are few threads open about this and a section in the News part of the website the Chaos put together. Long story short is Brandon isn't happy with how it is turning out and decided to pause work on it for a unknown time. It looks like he is now putting his efforts into a mystery project and *fingers crossed* for Wax and Wayne #4. -
It will hard to beat Tolkien for greatest fantasy writer. I, personally, feel that some authors have passed him, but he has a almost godlike reputation among fantasy readers that it will be pratically impossible for the general opinion to sway. I think almost all of us want what is best for Brandon and either like or at the very least are understanding about the side projects that he likes to work on. Apologies if my poll q and a suggested otherwise.

I think all of the Malazan books are better the second time. The first read is usually really confusing and the second read is where you start to make all sorts of connections; you also see some crazy foreshadowing that completely goes over the readers head first time around.
-
I voted for the good option. I was wondering what everyone else felt about the news. This poll is for you @Roadwalker!
-
Not scrapped, but I think it would be more accurate to say delayed. Who knows when the inspiration will strike (so he will complete it in a satisfying way)? It could be tomorrow or in ten years.
