So I stumbled upon a "light novel" and before buying it I saw they had a anime out and I watched the first two episodes of The Saga of Tanya the Evil. The plot is a bit bonkers, but I absolutely love it! There is a 15 year girl that is fighting in the mage corps in a fantasy world that resembles Germany in WW1. This is a brutal world and she is a very "old soul" that can be quite ruthless chilling. I will definitely be buying the light novels and very much recommend the anime.

Although I would never argue with people who don't like Oathbringer I wonder if part of the problem is unrealistic expectations. I think when each book takes over three years of waiting, it is easy to hype the book up into something it will never be able to fulfill. I think this will continue to be a trend, for some, regarding this series and book six will have the most, of all ten books, people upset with it upon the first read.

Good point that I hadn't thought of. Perhaps their oaths were hanging on a thread and this was just a final step. Kind of a like a man that's married and having been living separate from his wife for years, dating other people, and finally gets notice about the divorce papers going through. They were basically divorced, but it wasn't official yet.

So my wife is going to give me a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas (already excited for several book series on Kindle Unlimited) but my question to the community is who sets the prices for Kindle Books and why are some so high? I noticed that the Oathbringer e-book is about $17 on amazon and the physical copy is selling for less than $15. This makes no sense to me. I wanted the paperwhite more for the indie titles, so I am not complaining, but just am confused and was wondering if someone could explain why some kindle books are so expensive. What makes the most sense is to have the ebook cost a couple of dollars less than the mass market paperback edition; so using Oathbringer as a example the price should be about $7.

That's how I understand it bases on Kaladin's musings on the subject (found on page 1203). Edit: Sorry I couldn't get a better picture. I tried to balance the book in one hand and take a picture in the other and I guess I am not well coordinated

[OB] I Hate Moash for Giving the Bridge Four Salute
Ammanas replied to NotBurtReynolds's topic in Stormlight Archive
@Ookla the Obtuse I like it! I can see the arguments for every side and appreciate this new way of looking at it. It will be exciting when we will get more clarification on Moash, and his motives, in the next book; or perhaps Brandon will always have this scene remain ambiguous? -

@Briar King I must of been out of the room when it came on. What did you like about it? -
@thegatorgirl00 Well, it just felt like a really tame watered down fantasy. He combined a lost Roman Legion with Pokémon and yet, somehow, I felt like I have read this type of story many times. I just thought everything about wasn't necessary bad, but just mediocre. He didn't excel in any area and I had to push myself to finish the novel. I also think his writing style works better with his detective novels. I enjoy the snark and cynicism (even if it is a bit much at times) that is his kind of tribute to Phillip Marlowe. For Aeronaughts Windlass I really enjoyed the world building and the cat (the name escapes me at the moment).

Last I heard of the situation is that the reason for the delay was that he was going through a messy divorce, his pet dog died and having a house built (with several delays and mishaps). He like most authors is a sensitive soul and all these things really overwhelmed him. He is also one of those writers that can only write in a certain space and his life was transient for a period of time. Last I heard everything was settled in September so he has been back on a writting schedule (supposedly).
-
Going along with that same idea I think that the Dresden Files really found its direction in book four. By that same logic than the Aeronaut's Windlass could actually end up being, in my opinion, better than the Dresden after another book or so. I'm excited to see the direction the series goes.
-
I actually liked it. Not as much as Dresden, but far,far more than the Codex Alera (full disclosure I only could get through the first book).

I am as well. Just finishing up rereading Morning Star so everything is fresh for Iron Gold. Advance reviews of the books have been very positive. I feel like the author has become more ambitious with each book and the result is a upward trend.

Is he? I agree by the way, but thought Lightbringer was more popular.

Dalinor realizes a deeper meaning of "Unite Them" and undergoes a quest to unite all of Adolnalsium's shards.

Do you feel that it was for a younger audience @Briar King? What did you not like about it?

He will slowly reveal how the world works as the series progresses. He doesn't have a tidy magic system like Sanderson; I read in a interview that magic should always be a little mysterious because if not it would lose...well its magic. Erikson always has a slow build, but has a epic convergence at the end; similar to Stormlight in that regard. If you are feeling lost than the following website should help: https://www.tor.com/series/malazan-reread-of-the-fallen/

I know that there are some fans of his on this site and was wondering the best place to start with his books. It looks like he has written about 75 or so books and several series. I was thinking of starting the Imager Portfolio series and was hoping someone could list the pros and cons of each series that he has written. Thanks!

I'm sure there are others that can answer these sort of questions better that I, but I was under the impression that it is completely the sprens decision of who they want to bond. With that information I would say that the spren could see characteristics in Shallan that hadn't been developed yet...I think Pattern could see who she would become. Perhaps that has something to do with the realm he/it is from?

I think it is brilliant, but a little slow paced for me to watch it several times. It is a great movie the see once or every few years or so. I thought the director (Nolan) best movie was Inception... can't get enough of that movie

No swearing allowed. There is a lot more younger people on this site compared to others. Here is the rest of the rules:

Yes, I would call that man selfish (if he could already support his family and takes a advancement to further his career, his ego, and that takes away from his job of interacting with his kids and being father.

I have to disagree with people that think that a self actualized woman is a show of strength. I think Navani is the woman that shows the most strength in the series. She could also be the strongest character period. She was the one that had to keep the kingdom together immediately following Gavilars death, that raised children without her spouse, that had to face everyday knowing that her husband was murdered and will never see him again, that kept the alliance together when Dalinar was drinking, that had to deal with years of being cast aside (before she reached the shattered plains). I think a real show of strength is keeping a positive outlook despite your trials, raising a family without your spouse, and sacrificing for others. I think "self actualized" women are mostly selfish and furthering there own careers and ambitions. I realize, just by your response, that we are completely different people with different values and beliefs and will probably disagree on this. That's fine, I have no problem agreeing to disagree, but just thought I would give a counter opinion.

I dont particularly believe in numerology, but do find it fascinating. Here is what they say about 16: Karmic Debt number 16 The 16 Karmic Debt represents destruction of the old and birth of the new. The 16 is about the fall of the ego and all that it has built for itself; it is a cleansing. All that has been constructed and all that serves to separate the person from the source of life is destroyed. Through the 16, reunion with the great spirit is accomplished. This can be a painful process, because it usually comes after much ego inflation. Life presents challenges to your grand plans and you tend to make choices that seem specifically designed to break down what you have previously built -- a self-destructive career choice or an act of stupidity that ruins an otherwise wonderful relationship, for example. The 16 Karmic Debt is a lost battle and you will likely feel humbled in the face of the collapse that follows. But this humility is the key to later success, because you will learn to follow the intimations of a higher reality, approaching life with an entirely new awareness. It is a life much the better for the fall. Those with the 16 Karmic Debt must be careful of egoism. Very often, those with the 16 use their highly intuitive and refined intellect to look down upon others, and view the rest of the world as inferior, leading to acute alienation and loneliness. When the 16 is in one of the Core numbers, this process of destruction and rebirth is a continuous cycle that actually serves to bring you into higher consciousness. The 16 Karmic Debt can be a path of progress and great spiritual growth if it is looked at properly. https://www.numerology.com/numerology-news/karmic-debt-numbers
