@Calderis is The Sibling Cusicesh the Protector?
-
Technically it is, but I get what you are saying. California Rolls are kind of like training wheels for sushi if sushi was a bike.
-
@A Budgie If people don't like the idea of sushi they could start with a California Roll and move their way up if they feel like it. I have seen some very picky eaters love California Rolls. If you aren't familiar with this term here is a link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_roll

Just got to make it through book 2 B.K of Wall! Then you get basically Genghis Khahn and his mongol horde riding dragons in a invasion!

@Briar King Have you read his Land Fit for Heroes trilogy? I liked the idea of the main character that are retired "Heroes" of the great war against the Lizard people and they have all been scarred in some way by the events of the past war and their celebrity status. He does some interesting things with the trilogy; can't say I was a fan of the extremely graphic gay sex scenes though. Its the only book I can remember where I had to skip sections because I just didn't want to read about that sort of stuff in such detail.

@Who Sharded? Huh that is interesting. Maybe someone pointed out that Tattersail is described in the book as at least a little overweight and they made the change. The picture you shared depicts her as anorexic.

The Effects of Being Drunk
Ammanas replied to MistbornAlpaca's topic in Writing Excuses and Intentionally Blank
@MasterJack I think what recneps was trying to say in his comment was that your question sounds like a good excuse to go out and get smashed (drunk). Thats how I interpret it at least. -
Book 8 is neither my favorite or least favorite for me. I think Toll the Hounds has Eriksons best horror scenes of the series (for what thats worth). I also love how the big scene at the end (involving Hood, and Travellor and Rake) is planned in the prologue; but it is oh so subtle and will only catch it on a reread. I have a mixed view on book 9; of all of the original 10 books this one felt the most like a slog, but it has, in my opinion, the greatest convergence of the entire series!

Listening to the audiobook Legends of Ahn book three in Kade's series. This series has a lot of problems, but the narrator does a excellent job and its kind of guilty pleasure reading about a guy who is awesome at everything (greatest assassin in the world, head of a criminal empire, every woman wants him and every man wants to be him) he surrounds himself with powerful friends and they just go out and kick butt. I am reading Midnight Front by Mack. It's a good book if you are into WW2 history, magic, and demons. I think its a lot of fun so far!

I think that Toll the Hounds has the most Tiste lore of the main series if memory serves. After finishing my big Esslemont read I am tempted to give Kharkanus another try. I also admit Fall of Light scares me a bit. The only malazan I needed to skim because I just wasnt prepared for it. Maybe a proper mindset will help me for my next try. Because it wasn't a in depth read I hardly remember any of Fall of Light.

The Effects of Being Drunk

I found a article that answers your questions: https://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh27-2/186-196.htm -
I'm happy that Brandon looks to be refocused and successful on this new project. I imagine it must of been depressing to put so much work into the sequel Reckoner trilogy and have it not work out and not really know why. Good for him!

I think highly of Rothfuss as a writer, but there are several authors that are just as good, if not better, that actually care about their fans, deliver occasional updates, and deliver books in a timely manner. I hope that both adaptions work out, but if not there are always the books to enjoy.

I thought it was one of the better stories in Arcanum Unbounded (probably my second favorite behind Emperors Soul) and hope Brandon writes more in that setting! There was actually a reference to Sixth of Dusk in Oathbringer which was kind of cool!

Dang B.K. you are breaking my heart! If you can get through part two (titled Gusts and Gales) the action really picks up and becomes more of the story I think you were expecting. I personally really liked the first two sections with its exploration of different themes, society, and legend but get that some people may not like it.

[OB] Full Book Reactions / Full Spoilers Thread
Ammanas replied to Chaos's topic in Stormlight Archive
There is a pretty well known Science Fiction/ Fantasy blogger that gave a long review on Oathbringer. I believe it is fair, but lists several positives and negatives. Here is the link: http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2018/01/oathbringer-by-brandon-sanderson.html?m=1 -
I have always liked Redmask! I have never really gotten why so many fans don't enjoy his story. The only thing I can think of is some people see his story as pointless, but it introduces a few things that will come to fruition in Dust of Dreams.

Man @StormingTexan@AngelEy3 you guys are bringing back some memories! I can remember my younger self hunched over the radio just hoping they would play Semi-charmed Life by Third Eye Blind so I could have it on cassette. It actually kind of reminds me of trying to capture a rare pokemon; a lot of patient waiting and just hoping that you can capture it without it running away or fainting.

So I could be completely wrong about this theory, but I think the creation of Crokus was very much a product of the time in which he was writing. This book was published in '99 but written in '91 and the young roguish thief with a good heart was very much a staple of fantasy series written in the '80's.
-
@officiumdefunctorum I think they made some bad choices with the narrators for the Kharkanus books (you might want to listen to a sample to see if you mind them or not), but if you love the Silmarillion and Bakker you will love the story I think.
-
I guess the whole Oathbringer reaction thread could count as a review board, but I will play along I have a different relationship with Stormlight than most here I think; I dont really expect the plot to move forward (and I am usually a plot guy). I came to this idea in Way of Kings where you could basically summarize the book in about 4 sentences. I enjoy the worldbuilding and character development of which Oathbringer delivered. I personally thought the Shadesmere (sp?) sections really interesting as with just spending time in his unique world! I think a solid 8/10 for me. I think Words of Radiance was better and a maybe Oathbringer with a slight edge over WoK.

I think people were expecting more of the initial trilogy and Pierce Brown is trying something different (which I applaud him for). My wife also says that the book ends in a cliff hanger, but this author has been very dependable with releasing his books quickly (The next one has a tentative date of September of this year). If anyone wants to give the audiobooks a try I really liked three of the narrators from the beginning (and yes the kept on Reynold from the first three books). The narrator for the female point of view really annoyed me at first, but either she improved or the voice grew on me so I ended up enjoying it halfway or so through the book and onward.
