    Kelsier swallowed his ale, swiping the back of his hand across his mouth, keeping in character for the urchin he was pretending to be. Hopefully, Adrienne wouldn’t be taking too long; his alcohol tolerance didn’t transfer, even though his scars did. There was probably meaning to that, if he cared to look. He didn’t.

    Kelsier scowled as Adrienne stormed off. Hopefully that would ease any suspicions. What had she been thinking, approaching him?

    “To me, of course,” Kelsier said cheerfully. “Now go away and find your contact. Slap me as you do. Make sure to look annoyed when you go.Shouldn’t be too difficult.”

    Kelsier smiled. “I dimmed their Connection, but not yours,” he explained, mumbling the words into his cup.

    A boy of about thirteen entered the tavern a few minutes after Adrienne. Dark hair fell about his face, the right side of which was covered by a large, stained bandage. Several people in the bar waved at the boy’s entry. He was clearly a regular and well known to them. The boy took his drink from the bartender, settling himself on a stool at the far end of the bar. Shortly thereafter he became virtually unnoticeable.

    Kelsier smiled, tracking her with bronze and steel sight. He waited until she landed near the local tavern, then slipped away to change.

    “If I come with you your contact will know somethings up,” Kelsier explained. “That’s why you have the earring. If anyone asks, you’ve decided to become a Pathian. ”But they probably won’t ask.” He leaned back against the wall near the nail. “Any reason you’re still here?”

    “You can always do that,” Kelsier noted. “But he can’t always talk back. ”Now head to the tavern. I’ll meet you there.”

    Kelsier nodded, dropping the earring into her palm. “Good. Oh, and if Harmony starts chatting just ignore him.”

    “Because you know everything there is to know about the metallic arts,” Kelsier said dryly. “Now, do you want to do this, or shall I?”

    Kelsier rolled his eye. “What do you think it is? The important thing is that it will let me contact you.”

    Kelsier burned iron and steel holding her in place by the metal in her blood. “Why would you presume you had a choice? You put in the earring, or I will.”

    Kelsier grinned at her. “About that.” He handed her an earring. “Stick this in your ear.”

    “Which you are going to walk to now, right?” Kelsier said mildly, examining a long, thin nail emerging from a nearby building. “People should really take more care with these,” he noted. “People could so easily be stabbed...”
