North Scadrian Survivorist Twinborn. Allomantic pewter and Feruchemical bronze. No real Terris connection. Grew up in one of the outer cities, now lives in Elendel. Works as an accountant in a middle sized construction firm.

Could you give an example? I’m having a hard time visualizing it for some reason.

Favourite Order, and the Order you think you would be
Kingsdaughter613 replied to Ixthos's topic in Stormlight Archive
I’m an artist, so I’d probably end up a Lightweaver. I’ve always liked the idea of Willshapers though... no clue why, but I put them as my favorite. -
So what happens to you when you store it? And what happens if you tap it? It seems like the effects would be very interesting on someone from Sel...
-
Interesting. How exactly would that work? Ie. What is heritage in this context, what would tapping do, what do you lose (temporarily) when storing, etc.
-
Thanks! I’m glad you like it!

Except that there is no reason to think one God Metal is more invested than the other. If anything Atium should be more invested, considering how much of Ruin’s power is trapped within it. Chaos (paraphrased) Why is there such an imbalance between the amount of atium and the amount of lerasium in the world? Also, why are atium and lerasium very imbalanced in Allomantic power (Lerasium is far more useful than atium, really)? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) There isn't. Leras is just spread out further. He is in the mists, in the Well, and in the lerasium. Ruin's power however is condensed strictly in atium. No, the powers don’t need to be related. But how they work within magic systems can give us a hint. Lerasium should not be dominant within Feruchemy because it is not the God Metal of Feruchemy. Feruchemy is of both shards; the universal metalmind should therefore be of both as well. Sentience on Scadrial is caused by Preservation; it makes sense to me that Preservation’s Metal can steal/store it. But we may be getting some real answers soonish... SquishyMouth Godmetal alloys in Era 1 feel a bit like an unfulfilled promise, can you tell us about the attribute stored in a metalmind made out of any atium/lerasium alloy? Brandon Sanderson No, not yet. (This is something I intended to get to in Era 3, and am saving for it.)
-
That’s just never made sense to me though. That’s the ability you’d expect from the God metal of that system; in this case that would probably be the effect of the alloy. I think we need to look at what Atium already does within that system, and what the two do within their own. Because that’s where the parallels would be. Atium does temporal/Spiritual things in the two systems that are not its own. Within it’s own it has been indicated to be capable of stealing anything. (WoB is unclear, as he says it can steal both every power and, in the next sentence, that it can replace any other spike.) Within Feruchemy, it stores Youth, and we know age is connected to the spiritual realm. Within Allomancy, it allows you to see into the Spiritual realm, which allows you to see into the future. It also expands your mind, allowing you to react to that knowledge. Lerasium manipulates the Spiritweb within it’s own system; the working theory is that it Connects one to a Shard. What Lerasium does in Hemalurgy is very unclear; I think it is believed to steal individual attributes. Powerful, but also highly limited. I also suspect that Lerasium spikes would deteriorate quickly as the power would be coming from the spike, not Ruin. Sentience on Scadrial exists due to extra Preservation in the people. I actually think that this is what Lerasium steals, which manifests as a strengthening of all attributes. (Like getting extra Breath on Nalthis.) This makes Lerasium very powerful on Scadrial, but limited off of it, similar to other metals that primarily steal things that don’t exist off Scadrial. Like other metals, it can steal more than one thing though, likely individual attributes. So based on this, I think it stores that part of Scadrians. It stores their extra Preservation. When tapped, the Feruchemist has all their attributes strengthened, in a manner similar to having excess Breath on Nalthis. At extreme levels, they would temporarily stop aging. When storing, the Feruchemist would be very similar to a Drab. Parallels: Each Metal is Supreme in its own system with a major Spiritual effect. (Atium, assuming ‘steals everything’, can edit the Spiritweb in many different ways. Lerasium rewrites the Spiritweb as it’s base effect.) Both are extremely powerful but highly limited in the other’s system, with the fueling power coming from the metal. (Atium lets you see the Spiritual realm and let’s you use that information; Lerasium would steal the extra Preservation, but be a lesser Atium (stealing only physical/mental attributes) elsewhere.) Within Feruchemy, both store something unusual and unique and limited. Due to Preservation being the source of Scadrian Sentience, I think it makes sense that that’s what it stores. Feruchemy being, essentially, an alloy of Ruin and Preservation, a universal metalmind would be a Lerasium/Atium alloy. It would not be Harmonium; Harmony is not truly an alloy of the two, as they have merged/are merging on a more fundamental level. As time goes on, and the two Shards continue to merge, I think he should get his own system, just as he has his own metal. He may already have this, considering what we’ve seen Harmonium do. (Note that this hypothetical system is external to the people. Also note that, right now, Saze would drop Harmony.)

I did say that some green light must get through, since the ferromagnetic cloud isn’t perfect. It seems you agree with my headcannon that pre-Catascande ‘blond’ wasn’t actually what we call blond. My theory is that it is a similar shade to Cinderella’s below, which is not actually yellow (it’s a pale red) but is often mistaken as such.
-
My theory: sentience.
-
It’s green light that’s filtered. And the brain only ‘adapts’ if it knows what the actual colors are. If you have different colors at different times it will be noticeable. A more extreme version is a rare form of ocular blindness, where the brain is convinced it can ‘see.’ (No, it can’t.) There’s also the fact that blond hair, as we know it, shouldn’t really exist. When blond hair doesn’t receive enough light, it darkens. So ‘blond’ hair pre-Catascande could have actually been light red to dark strawberry blond, and light brown to dark dirty blond. I headcannon Kell and Marsh as actually having Cinderella’s original movie hair, which many mistakenly believe is blond. (Disney does not help matters.) This doesn’t change that much when switching environs and allows Vin to describe Alriane as blond and yellow haired. It also explains brown plants; they actually are somewhat green, but appear brown due to the lack of green wavelengths. Which is a much simpler explanation than the complete destruction of chlorophyll. It still doesn’t explain how ‘White’ clothing can exist outdoors... the fact that it’s a pale gray might though.

I think Lerasium is actually misunderstood (again) and is stealing the extra Preservation that grants sentience on Scadrial. Which has a side effect of improving all your attributes. (It does not steal magical abilities.) WOB on Atium is a little unclear, as he first says ‘Atium steals any power’ and then says its can mimic any other spike.’ The chart is in-world and hypothetical, since no one has ever actually created a Lerasium spike. In-world, attributes was likely picked to balance Atium’s ‘powers’. Brandon Sanderson Preservation wanted Atium and Malatium to be of use to the people, as he recognized that it would be a very powerful tool—and that using it up could help defeat Ruin. But he also recognized that sixteen was a mythological important number, and felt it would make the best sign for his followers. So he took out the most unlikely (difficult to make and use) metals for his sign to his followers. But that doesn't have much to do with Hemalurgy's use here. Remember that the tables—and the ars Arcanum—are 'in world' creations. (Or, at least, in-universe.) The knowledge represented in them is as people understand it, and can always have flaws. That was the case with having atium on the table in the first place, and that was the case with people (specifically the Inquisitors) trying to figure out what atium did Hemalurgically. Their experiments (very expensive ones) are what determined that atium (which they thought was just one of the sixteen metals) granted the Allomantic Temporal powers. What they didn't realize is that atium (used correctly) could steal ANY of the powers. Think of it as a wild card. With the right knowledge, you could use it to mimic any other spike. It works far better than other spikes as well. As for Marsh, he's got a whole bag of atium (taken off of the Kandra who was going to try to sell it.) So he's all right for quite a while. A small bead used right can reverse age someone back to their childhood. But this was a little beyond their magical understanding at the time.

So this has been bugging me. Kell and Marsh are said to have blond hair. Blond hair ranges from a reddish- yellow to white. It typically grows lighter when exposed to sunlight. But Pre-Catascande Scadrial has a red sun or, more accurately, has a ferromagnetic cloud that filters out some green wavelengths causing the sun to appear red. (I’m assuming some green gets through as the cloud isn’t consistent.) Which is a problem, because under a red light yellow looks red. (Green should also appear black outdoors, but would become green when exposed to candlelight.) So Marsh and Kell should look like redheads outside, and blond inside. But they seem to be blond all the time, which makes me wonder if they are actually blond according to how we use the term. If they had hair that was closer to red, then the transition wouldn’t be so obvious. This doesn’t explain the issues with Green, or how Elend could have any sort of white suit... (White objects reflect all colors, and change color depending on the frequency of the light. If there is no Green light, then that suit should not have appeared white.) Thoughts?

mistborn Looking for tattoo design based on Mistborn series
Kingsdaughter613 replied to AndreaC's topic in Sanderson Fan Works
I think he’d be fine with it. My religion doesn’t allow tattooing, but I’d be thrilled if someone used one of my drawings as a base for one! Brandon has shown tremendous respect for other people’s beliefs and choices, even when he disagrees with them. I’m sure he’d recognize it for the honor it is. -
The question is: is there a Misting version of a Feruchemist. The answer is yes, but not in Era1.
-
Eidetic and audiographic together let me replay entire movies! Which was fun on long, boring card trips. For me, my audiography seems to come out more with music. If I hear someone hum a few bars of a song the entire thing will replay, with the full orchestra. If it was a music video or show, that will play in the corner of my eye too. It’s highly annoying actually... My favorite experience with audiography was with a teacher. She thought I hadn’t been paying attention to her lesson... so I repeated it back verbatim. (With slight variation, because even audiographic memory isn’t perfect.) Funny thing was that I didn’t mean to; I just remembered it that way. She never asked if I was paying attention again...
-
You misunderstood. It was indicated that you CAN hack any metalmind, IF you have that power AND are storing your identity. Essentially, by storing your identity, the identity filter can’t recognize your presence (as opposed to unkeyed metalminds, where no filter exists.) BTW, regarding your WOB: Eidetic memory actually does exist (I have it to an extent; it was stronger when I was a kid. Most children lose the ability as they get older.) True Photographic memory does not exist. With Eidetic memory, the ‘pictures’ don’t last more than a few minutes. The two are often conflated, and the two terms used interchangeably, so it’s confusing. There is also something called audiographic memory, which is the ability to recall audio perfectly.
-
It was indicated that you could do so while storing identity. You’d need the correct medallion though, unless you were hemalurgically enhanced or you were a Full Feruchemist.

I think some people will take it the other way; a piece of my soul will continue to exist after the rest has dissipated. Prior to donating you would have to be informed of all potential side effects - including that one. Allomantic pewter spikes go in the shoulders, and can be removed without killing the person. Yes, it will scar. So will my three year olds trache, when it’s removed. Would it have been better for her to die than be scarred? Considering the alternative is for the child to never have a chance to live, I think the risks (and the scars) are worth it. Regarding instinctive burning: Brandon Sanderson Burning metals by instinct, by the way, is something I had to add to the book for scenes like this. I had to be able to have characters be able to heal quickly–in a relative sort of way–so that I could keep the pacing where I wanted it. That meant long term, quick healing, if that makes any sense. I made it possible for an Allomancer's body to use metals–particularly pewter and tin–when they needed them. I knew I had a source for this! It’s the annotations, which I read AGES ago. I love the Arcanum. It makes finding these things much easier. The closest I can find to Hemalurgy (as in the system itself, not the users) being evil is that it was conceived as the evil system in the Allomantic, Feruchemic, Hemalurgic trinity. Which is not the same as saying it’s evil. If you have a WOB staying otherwise, please post it. Brandon has said numerous times that the Shards and their systems are not inherently evil (or good), but some more easily lend themselves to it than others. Hemalurgy definitely falls into that category. As an aside, so you know my general perspective: As an Orthodox Jew I am against ending any life prematurely - for any reason. That said, I’m also a classic liberal, which means I strongly believe that everyone has the right to make their own choices (so long as they do not directly adversely effect others, obviously), however much I disagree with them. So I am for legalizing a lot of things I personally disagree with! The latter leads me to the opinion that, if someone wants to donate part of their soul - for whatever reason- they should be allowed to do so. The former is why I feel that you should try to preserve life, even if there is a grave risk. So I’d be willing to use an Allomantic pewter spike to try and save an infant’s life, but I’d also allow someone to choose to end their life with a spike.
-
There is instinctive burning and tapping. We’ve seen both, but primarily burning. Allomantic pewter can definitely be burned instinctively so an infant could burn it. @Pathfinder As I said earlier, the people who believe in the soul probably won’t do it. Someone who believes they cease to exist after death is far more likely to try. I think a temporary patch to allow an infant to use Pewter (Allomantic pewter spikes are removable) allowing them to survive, would be worth the risk. Vin’s struggles are perfectly normal; not everything can be blamed on the Spike. She spent her life running around, being abused, and threatened with abandonment. That would mess up anyone, spike or no spike!
-
If you read the full post, you’d see that I said ‘before Ruin started to get free.’ Also, all those spikes were acquired unwillingly and with great pain. Intent matters. A willing donor and a painless death would probably change some of the effects. And since infants can’t use medallions, you’d need a spike to give them access to Allomantic pewter and Feruchemical gold.
-
I have a theory that a willing donor may mitigate some of those (due to intent being very important in the Cosmere), and having only one spike doesn’t seem to cause issues - otherwise I doubt Saze would have the Kandra give out Spike earrings. Vin’s Spike earring didn’t really cause her issues until Ruin started to get free. And yes, the idea isn’t that there would be a lot of these. It’s something that people who are already dying, and are planning to use medical intervention to speed it up, can do to give their families a literal piece of themselves to keep. Though I do foresee some members of poor families doing the procedure to give their children an inheritance. But, for the most part, I think they’d be sacred family heirlooms. I do think Feruchemical gold and Allomantic pewter spikes would save lives though. To use a medallion, you need to know what it is. If you have gold feruchemy or Pewter allomancy, it seems you can unconsciously use it in extreme situations. For people who are unconscious, or children too young to understand, the spikes could allow them to be saved. Children under a certain age will not be able to use medallions. So that is where many hospitals will look for people willing to donate those abilities.

Yes... if six shards are working in tandem. Which is pretty close to ‘not going to happen.’ As far as ordinary people are concerned... No. It’s immune to soulcasting. Can you Soulcast aluminum into other materials? Brandon Sanderson Aluminum would strongly resist any sort of Soulcasting. Billy Todd Would that resistance be overcome? Could be overcome? Brandon Sanderson This is the question. Everything can be, right? Aluminum, in the cosmere, was created. And can be created. So, people ask me this, "Can? Cannot?" Like, with a powerful enough magnet in our world, what can you do? Like, is water magnetic? ...But, could you make water respond to a magnet? Yes! You can make anything if you really try hard enough... It's, like, this idea, that when people are like, "Can you, yes or no?" Well... yes! Would it take the power of six Shards of Adonalsium working together? Maybe! Can you? Yes, you probably can. Like, we're talking about a fantasy universe where almost anything is possible, and the impossibilities are contradictions, it's "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" sort of questions when you get into "can you?" Now, could you Soulcast aluminum using a reasonable amount of energy that an individual could conceivably have in a normal setting and situation? No. If that's what you're looking for. #aluminum #soulcasting Oathbringer release party (Nov. 13, 2017) #2 Questioner So, we know that things can be Soulcast into aluminum. But can aluminum itself be Soulcast into something else? Brandon Sanderson It resists all forms of Investiture trying to change it to things.
-
You need to know where to put the Spike to get the attribute you want. Also, only a licensed professional hemalurgist would be legally allowed to perform the procedure. In Judaism we believe that a body needs to be buried whole or it causes the soul pain. That’s probably the closest you’ll find to a RL version of that. It’s why Orthodox Jews generally don’t donate vital tissues. (And yes, this does cause major shortages in general, and Israel specifically.) The whole idea is that it is an opt in system. Anyone bothered by the thought of spiritual pain/damage won’t do it - just like Orthodox Jews usually won’t be vital organ donors. Others won’t feel that way. Some will actually feel that it gives them a form of immortality. And the spiking isn’t done immediately; it’s a ‘right to die’ sort of thing. It’s done on patients who are already dying, or are in tremendous pain and don’t want to continue. And there will be the same arguments in-world as in RL regarding how ethical ‘right to die’ is separate from the hemalurgic aspect. I don’t see too many people doing it. I do see families having a spike in a bottle of Great-great Grandpa’s blood, that they take out for special occasions. The spikes would be heirlooms. I do see some people offering to be spiked for science, with a hemalurgic researcher supervising the process of attempting a new bind point. And then there are those who offer themselves to be spiked for the greater good. The final group? Death Row inmates get it as an option for execution. The spike goes to their families, unless they request otherwise. They can also choose to be shot, or receive a lethal dose of fentanyl.
-
Aluminum just absorbs the investiture. It can’t be pushed on. I think A&L are unique due to Ati and Leras creating Scadrial. But it wouldn’t work with other magic systems or with other god metals.
