  1. Brandon has discussed a Star Trek like clash of cultures. Personally, I’d love the idea of a mix between Generations and -going to another series - Babylon 5. And seeing as Brandon is working with the creator of the latter... I want a Cosmere Babylon 5.
  2. Yeah, that was weird. But necessary. I mean, after Dalinar was corrupted it was the only way to save the Stormfather. And he was severely weakened, so at least she isn’t totally OP. The Syl thing was sad though. Because after Kaladin remembered Kelsier’s personality started dominating even though neither really wanted it. (Storm Moash! Kaladin was totally in control before he showed up and started suicide baiting again! Really. Taunting Kal with stuff he did in a totally different life!) Syl obviously isn’t a good Spren for Kelsier, so he had to pass the bond to save her. On the plus side, at least the Ghostbloods are under control now that their boss is kinda back? And Kaladin isn’t gone even if he isn’t the dominant persona right now. Totally a set up for them splitting into two fully different people, like Shallan and Radiant talked about before they decided to integrate in book five. Man, Brandon’s foreshadowing... Who could have foreseen this twist?!
  3. Because Testament was elsewhere in Shadesmar? She’d only come if Shallan summoned her as a blade just before they entered Shadesmar.
  4. No, you have it backwards. Kal thought Kel was a manifestation of his Shadow, but it turned out that when Kelsier was trying to come back to life he’d somehow managed to get himself attached to a dead infant, like the Godking in Warbreaker. And it was really Kaladin remembering his previous life. There was a lot of Realmatics involved, so it makes sense you got confused. Who even reads all that technical stuff? Honestly when Navani started going on about base pair geometry in SDNA... I mean, I guess the biologists liked it?
  5. Yeah, it’s really amazing how quickly Brandon writes. I could have sworn RoW came out just under two months ago and he’s already publishing book 8!
  6. Up on the roof Kelsier smirks smugly at the Stormfather. “So much for hot air, Old Windbag. Now let’s see how the others do.”
  7. Kelsier - Willshaper, but more likely to end up a Lightweaver. Slight possibility of Dustbringer (Quiz agrees) Elend - Bondsmith/Truthwatcher/Elsecaller (Gets Edgedancer and Windrunner before Bondsmith, neither of which suit him well. However, all three are pretty close.) Vin - Windrunner/Lightweaver (Quiz agrees) Sazed -Truthwatcher/Edgedancer Tyndwyl - Elsecaller Marsh - Skybreaker/Stoneward Breeze - Edgedancer/Lightweaver Clubs - Willshaper Spook - Dustbringer Ham - Truthwatcher Dox - Stoneward Alriane - Willshaper/Lightweaver Beldre - Lightweaver Some of these may seem odd, but I think you need to really look at what drives the characters. Kelsier - personal autonomy, which leads him to the Willshapers. He’s a conman though, so he’s more likely to attract a Cryptic. Elend - he wants to create a good government, making him a Bondsmith. He’s also a scholar and philosopher, which leads him toward the Truthwatchers and Elsecallers. He’s more Truthwatcher in TFE and more Elsecaller in HoA. Vin - While she does have Lightweaver traits, especially in TFE, ultimately she moves toward protection. She’s a protector, and by the end of WoA she’s a Windrunner. Sazed - although he ends up binding things together, that’s not what he naturally is. He’s someone who listens and seeks to recall what was forgotten. He also seeks truth, and keeps it safe for the future. So Edgedancer and Truthwatcher. Tyndwyl - she’s a lot like Jasnah: a coolheaded, logical, scholar. Elsecaller it is! Marsh - Marsh is the closest any of the crew gets to a Skybreaker. He has a moral code he holds to strongly. He’s also as stubborn as his little brother, just in a very different way. That said, Marsh is unlikely to attract most Highspren, especially under current circumstances. His unwillingness to surrender, even while mind controlled, would probably lead him to attract a Peakspren. Breeze - Breeze is an interesting one. The lie that defines his life would attract a Cryptic to him. But the reality of Breeze is a man who understands people. It’s the reason he’s such a good soother - he LISTENS. And, in his own way, helps. He can fit either Order, but I think I prefer him as an Edgedancer. Clubs - another interesting one. Clubs was working to hide Skaa mistings and was helping runaway Skaa before he ever met Kelsier. He’s always worked towards freedom. And he’s a craftsman, which fits that Order well. Not a typical Willshaper, but the one I think is most likely to attract a Reacher. Spook - Flame imagery aside... Spook seeks self mastery throughout HoA, almost destroying himself in the process. He’s also the one who wrote a book on Hemalurgy later, long after Kell had gone South and Spook grown up. I think the Ashspren could definitely like him. Ham - at his soul, Ham is a philosopher. He’d be an unusual Truthwatcher, but the Mistspren don’t seem to care much for ‘typical’ anyway. Dox - Dox supports the entire crew. He’s the reliable one, the one who makes Kelsier’s crazy plans work. He’s their foundation, which makes him the Stoneward. In the end, Dox will hold the line. Alriane - Bright, cheerful, Alriane. She’s actually a much more even mix of Willshaper and Lightweaver than Kelsier, and I’m honestly not sure which Order she’d end up in. It could go either way. I think she’s slightly more Willshaper inclined though. Beldre - the only one I give pure Lightweaver to. Her life is defined by lies and secrets, and that’s what draws a Cryptic toward her. Her truths are spoken quietly, in shy whispers, but they are no less powerful for that. Now I need to visit the quiz and see how good my guesses are...
  8. Worth noting that Ruin’s loss took three different Vessels of Preservation. Leras created the original plan, but Ruin figures out a way to prevent it from working and kills Leras. Then Kelsier as Preservation conned Ruin by using his personal understanding of the players. For which Ruin nearly sent him Beyond, except that Vin Ascended, distracting Ruin. And Ruin STILL almost won them, except that he outplayed himself by killing Elend. This gave Vin as Preservation the impetus to kill Ruin, which also killed her. THREE vessels. To defeat ONE Shard. Who ended up being defeated because his own Intent meant that he had to act to Ruin on multiple levels. (Using Marsh and Spook against Kelsier and killing Elend to hurt Vin.) Worth noting that that has also been the only time we’ve seen two Shards in direct combat and it did not go well for Scadrial. This is one of the many reasons I say that SH should be read before RoW. If you’ve read SH then you know EXACTLY what it means when Sja Anat says that the power doesn’t agree with Rayse, because you’ve seen that before, when Kelsier held Preservation. But if you haven’t read Secret History, then it isn’t clear at all. Honestly, without Secret History one revelation seems to come from left field (the power disliking Rayse) and another can be missed entirely (Kelsier being Thaidakar.) Secret History is basically foreshadowing for RoW, which is a bit of a problem as you can’t read SH on its own and it isn’t part of SA at all. But without the Realmatic background on Shardic interactions it gives you, this book isn’t nearly as good. I doubt I would have enjoyed RoW as much without the knowledge of Shards, Shadows, and Realmatics I got from Secret History. Everything there becomes relevant here - and that’s a problem because the foreshadowing for RoW should have occurred in Stormlight, not a novella from another series.
  9. I figured Shallan actually named Pattern after Testament, whom she originally called Pattern. She thought they were the same Spren, after all. So Testament would have been the original Pattern. I’ve always felt Fractal would be a good name for a cryptic. Also Function. Testament can mean a covenant or a sign. I think the name represents Shallan’s promise to restore her Spren.
  10. 58: And awakened undergarments do not count as weapons, even if described as WMDs (weapons of mass displeasure.) 59: Hoid is not allowed to mess with this list by causing it to mysteriously have two listings for item 33.
  11. The way Kelsier thinks about Marsh, that his brother is a good man in way he has never been, leads me to believe that Kelsier is aware of this. Certain WoB indicate that as well; Kelsier knows he likes killing and hurting people , but tries to focus it at a good cause. I actually think Kell’s Truths would go: Something honest, but not powerful. The kind of thing he says casually and is startled when it’s accepted. Something truthful about himself. (I’m not fully sane; I’m not a good man, etc.) An honest look at himself and his actions (Like Vin makes him do) The last is pure theory, but my instinct says I’m right: Admitting that his continuing survival isn’t entirely his choice and that Preservation’s dual Commands have a lot to do with it - and he has no idea how much. Which would basically mean abandoning the Survivor persona altogether, and would probably result in the scars on his arms healing. I honestly think, if I’m correct about five, Kelsier gets stuck on four for a very long time. Being a Willshaper would push him to become more selfless. Being a Lightweaver would force Kelsier to become more honest. I actually think the latter is more interesting. Kelsier wants to be more selfless, and being a Willshaper would enable him to do so without having to abandon or face a lot of the things that he views as part of himself. Essentially, it would help him learn to change his behaviors for the better and, in the process, naturally bettering him. Being a Lightweaver would force Kelsier to actually change. It would force him to look not at his actions, but his motivations. Not at what he does, but who he is and why he’s doing it. And, as noted above, I think it would force him to acknowledge and abandon his personas. Including the one that’s shaped him for the entire time we’ve travelled with him. And I think Kelsier moving beyond the Survivor would be very, very interesting. Far more interesting than him learning to be a good man, which is what being a Willshaper would do. He’s still better suited to being a Willshaper, but he’s more interesting as a Lightweaver, at least to me. But either would be fascinating to see.
  12. If you don’t want spoilers, use the above, but utilize the time machine first.
  13. For Lift there’s a fairly simple explanation: Azir and Alethi are related languages. I only know a small amount of Yiddish, but it’s enough for me to understand a surprising amount of the closely related German. Someone who speaks Hebrew will have an easier time learning Arabic, and viceversa. Assuming the two languages are still closely related, she should be able to learn the new one quickly. Especially since the grammatical structure should be retained across both.
  14. Just to note, in SH Kelsier does confront some truths. First, in the Well, he admits that he hasn’t been fully sane since the Pits. That would definitely count as a truth. Later, during that scene with Vin, he admits that he doesn’t know the answer to her question. I think that admittance would be a truth. I don’t think that was him lying to himself; I think he genuinely doesn’t know. He had many reasons for doing what he did, some selfless, some selfish, and many a mix that he can’t even begin to parse out. I think, for Kelsier, not knowing his own motivations would bother him more than those motivations being selfish. ’I’m a psychopath’ wouldn’t be much of a truth for him though. He’s quite honest - to himself, at least - that he’s not a good man. And yes, he’s definitely Cryptic bait. I think Kelsier’s better suited to the Willshapers, but I think he’s more likely to end up bonding a Cryptic. Though I keep imagining a corrupted Cryptic, for some reason. Kelsier is an artist, btw. He’s a dramatic artist - an actor. Drama is a form of art, and Kelsier is very, very good at it.
  15. “Did you enjoy this choc?” Eryn asked now.
  16. I actually made a chart about this, but I can’t post it here.
  17. Speaking of Sigzil, do you remember when he started arresting everyone from Wit to Zahel to Felt for being aliens? Literal aliens, because they all came from other planets and had forgotten to fill out the proper visa applications? And Dalinar had to give a general amnesty because it turned out half the coalition was from other planets? Really did NOT expect Skar to be a Sandmaster though.
  18. Felt is a Scadrian worldhopper from TFE and a spy for hire. There is no indication that Axindweth has anything to do with Kelsier aside from originating on the same planet. Aethers are from Aether of Night. If I’m recalling correctly, they were symbiotic organisms that bonded with humans to grant them powers. Powers varied depending on the Aether. Yes, Demoux brought the Scadrian Common Cold to Roshar back in WoK.
  19. Me: Stick these guys in a ring and give me popcorn! (We know they both deserve to be punched and who better to do it than they themselves?)
  20. 1) would like to be friends with most: Adolin 2) feel is most believable in terms of motivation: Adolin 3) enjoy reading about most: Thaidakar, Shallan and Adolin. Fortunately their plots seem to run together. I also find TOdium quite interesting, especially now. And Rysn. I like reading about Rysn. 4) find most confusing/intriguing: Hoid and Thaidakar. Also Cultivation. 5) find makes you laugh the most: Thaidakar, but not in this series (because we haven’t seen him yet). Mostly in his novella, but he has good lines in most of his scenes. I love the fact that the Cosmere’s motto came from him looking for a bottle of decent wine. 6) would like to punch in the face: Hoid and Thaidakar. I don’t think this needs an explanation. I’ll settle for having them in one room again; they’ll do it for me. (WoA cage match 2!) Jasnah, on occasion. Kaladin, on occasion. Usually when he’s dominating the plot which is way. too. OFTEN! 7) personally relate to most: Shallan. We’re both artists. Also, Raboniel. I know what it’s like to have a child with Cognitive issues. And I know what it’s like to have to make the decision to end her life if it’s the best thing for her. (Fortunately, I didn’t have to.) 8) feel is emotionally most realistic: Adolin, Gavinor and Navani. Also Rysn. 9) shamelessly crush on the hardest: Adolin. 10) is most like someone you know IRL: Jasnah. She reminds me of my mother. Adolin: I have a similar friend. Shallan reminds me of me, minus the DID.
  21. Surgebinding, at least on Roshar, would be my guess. They seem to use it as a catch-all for everything. Something or another manifestation of Investiture on Nalthis, probably.
  22. Kelsier pulled a patch out of his pocket, covering the head of the metal spike protruding from his right eye socket. A pair of gloves covered his hands. “Robes are on the list,” he noted. “So we can get those right after we visit the bank.” If this was anything like the other worlds they’d visited they’d have access to their funds. The method varied, of course. Some worlds just had accounts in their name. Others were prepared for cross-universe travelers. It depended on how fantastical the setting was and how carefully the world had been crafted. Worlds like David’s tended to fold them in as fully fleshed our characters, with bank accounts and documentation. Worlds like Silk’s tended to be more relaxed; they might not even become characters. Worlds like Kelsier’s own usually added them as side characters; they’d have a basic background, but they also tended to be more heavily bound by the extensive laws controlling the setting. This one seemed fairly relaxed, from what Kelsier could tell. They had obviously become characters, but under their own names. Kelsier had even kept his North Scadrian accent! It was probably a world building flaw; the universe seemed similar to David’s in other ways, so it couldn’t be due to an overly fantastical nature.
  23. “And the city just finished building it!” (You do NOT want to know how long that took.) WTWTTSW there’s a bridge collapsing behind you as you race into Queens?
